There are a few Kumo restaurants in the New Haven county area and although the one down New Haven is my favorite, this one was more convenient for an old college friend of mine and I to meet up. It was pretty empty when we got there around 6:30pm but it filled up very quickly. I got the Fried rice, Avocado sushi and Scallion pancakes. The Scallion pancakes were so so good but super tiny. Sort of left me wanting more. The food overall is good and the wait staff is quite attentive. I'll try this Kumo more often but the one downtown is still my fav. read more

I'm writing this review solely based on the customer service of the guy who answers the phone to take orders. I called and was giving my order and he kept saying are you done ? Then I added more and he'd ask again, are you done yet? At that third time, I said excuse me?? He said I have a lot of customer here waiting do you need to call back ? I was so ticked off, I said um no- cancel my order, I'll spend MY MONEY at sushi palace, GOODBYE. Never ever ever again ordering at a business that acts like that. Sushi and teriyaki meals are good! Have had the best luck ordering for pick up, everything is prepared and ready in the time specified. Biggest let down is eating in.. Love, Love, Love this place ! Originally I was never a sushi fan until my sister took me to kumo.. I only eat sushi from here, the shrimp tempura is my fav.the drinks are nice, strong and inexpensive. The only downfall is the service. The waiters are not very friendly, the service always seems rushed, and it gets very busy but I feel by now the waiters should be used to it and approach the rush hours better. SAKI SAKI SAKI!!!!! I went to this restaurant on my 21st birthday and boy was it yummy! I love hibachi steak houses and this was definitely up to par with what I expected. Upon entering my party announced it was my birthday and so our chef was inclined to shoot SAKI into my mouth all night long... and I am not just talking about a simple squirt, this was a long hard stream of pure alcohol projected into my mouth! Needless to say I got drunk for the price of free because the chef kept the SAKI coming into my mouth (that's what she said) all night long! I always usually get the shrimp and steak dinner and it comes with soup and salad and fried rice and vegetable and green tea ice cream for dessert. Needless to say you get a lot of food for a reasonable price. I was a bit sad when they didn't ask for my I.D. though because I was pretty anxious to show it off. Any who, this place is yummy and I guess they even have sushi specials where all their sushi is half off from like 12-4pm that's awesome! I would most definitely go here again. read more

Just tried this place for the first time during Hamden's Restaurant week and it was very delicious! The outdoor decor really needs some TLC, but the inside is surprisingly different! It's updated and nice. We tried the gyozas, steak and chicken hibachi, salad, miso soup and ice cream tempura and it was all delicious! I would say that I like the vanilla better than the chocolate just as a heads up on the ice cream! The staff was very friendly and quick to serve us. All and all a great experience! My experience at Kumo is the perfect example that even places with good reputations may have an off night, and that first impressions are hard to overcome. I'm surprised we even waited. We had reservations for one of the hibachi tables for 7PM, as we were a larger group. We repeatedly watched as people without reservations and came in after us seated to fill in spots at the tables. After an hour past our reservations, we requested seating anywhere, in twenty minutes we had a table in the dining section. The food was decent, and the service was efficient...always making sure our sodas were refilled before they were finished. So we didn't get a show, and the food wasn't so exceptional it was worth the wait and reservation snub. But it was good standard hibachi fare. Then the bill arrives, only to find out that those refills that the waitstaff were so efficiently refilling were charged individually. These weren't seperate cans mind you, but refills to replace half consumed drinks brought out automatically. WIthout any word of caution or notification, we had gone through nearly a dozen sodas...it just seemed predatory and inexcusible, especially considering what we had been through just to get seated. We been much happier to patronize Sushi Palace for our japanese and sushi cravings ever since. So Kumo may have been good to others, but they are far from perfect. If they were more up front about their policies and honored their reservations, they'd live up to their four star rating, but we only had a two star kind of night. read more

The experience I had here could not have been any better! I can't get over how friendly the staff is. They were warm and funny and just lovely people. The sushi and sashimi was incredible. It is comparable to the sushi we recently had at Hagi in NYC...that's saying something : ) Even the silly old Philly roll was delicious! I highly recommend the squid, salmon, yellow tail, and white tuna pieces. On Sunday, sushi and sashimi are half price all day long, and wine, beer, and sake are also half price. My wife and I have eaten here are a couple of times now. The most recent of which was about two weeks ago. She always orders the hibachi meals and I always order the sushi. She has had three or four different dishes, and they have all been quite good. I ordered the same three or four sushi rolls each time and I have always been happy with the results. It is particularly good that they continue to have The half-price sushi rolls, otherwise the expense of this place would be a little on the high side. I will say that the last two times that we have gone, they charged for each drink - so refills aren't free. I dig Kumo. When I lived closer to it, it was my go to for sushi. The hibachi is pretty darn good too. However, my last experience turned me off a bit. We had a reservation for four for 7:00. Got there at 6:45...didn't get seated until sometime after 7:30. No one cared that we had reservations and there was a HUGE crowd of people spilling into the dining room waiting for tables as well--supposedly all with reservations. The one host that seemed to care finally gave everyone a free drink...but that experience still but a bad taste in my mouth. After reading the many high reviews of Kumo, I feel obligated to report on my own experience there this evening. Allow me to begin by saying that the service was very good; the waitress was attentive and thorough, and we never had to wait long for her to come around to check on us. That said, the rest of this experience was thoroughly disappointing. The fish was mediocre at best. The eel sauce was sugary. The pyramidal presentation of the roll we ordered was peculiar and resulted in an uneven distribution of the contents and topping. The roll was bland, with far more rice than anything else and topped with spicy tuna that wasn't. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that all the sushi and rolls we ordered were 50% off, but that doesn't change the fact that I won't be going back. read more

I was blown away by a few things here: a) 50% off sushi for lunch b) freshness and cut of the sashimi, which was far better than anything I've experienced in a while c) sweet potato tempura sushi....yum. for 3 rolls and 9 nigiris the bill came to $28 it's not like i'm a sushi chef but i know the difference between quality and crappy sashimi. i also know how it should be cut. i didn't try anything else they had on their menu but all the sushi i ate was great. read more

Ehhhhh. I love sushi, and Kumo is a good option when I want decent sushi really cheap. I've gotten takeout a few times from Kumo but I probably won't be back after the most recent time. I called and ordered a shrimp and avocado roll, spicy california roll, and a salmon tempura roll with no tobiko and they said it would be ready in 15 minutes. When I got back to work I found that my salmon roll had tobiko, whatever. I can just pick the insides out. But then I found a hair plastered to one of the rolls. Gross. I ate the other two rolls, they were alright, but I think I'm going to spend the extra money at another sushi place in the future. read more

Kumo is my sushi place of choice in the area, and their hibachi is excellent as well. I've never been disappointed by anything I've ordered there. Their sushi is consistently among the best in the area, and they do it for approximately half the cost of other businesses. All their regular sushi and sashimi is 50% off, all day every day. That makes it cheaper to eat sushi here than going down the street to all-you-can-eat Sushi Palace - and the sushi here is fabulous. (Personal favorite - Rainbow Roll). Staff is almost always attentive and prompt (I'd say 90% of the time we have excellent service, and the other 10% is average). They're friendly and easy to work with if you have a special request/modification to your order. The hibachi chefs, too, are excellent, if that's your thing. The price is about average for hibachi ($20-$30 for your meal, depending on what kind of meal), but it is as delicious as their sushi, and the chefs always put on a good show. Their takeout also qualifies for the 50% deal, if you want to grab and go. Definitely worth a stop (or ten). read more

First - the daily 50% off sushi lunch deal is a bargain - but it's not the best the restaurant has too offer. I suggest skipping the all-you-can-eat (almost) menu, and going, instead, with one or two of their specialty rolls. They quality is infinitely better - they're much larger (two is more than you can eat) - and the choices are tasty and intriguing. Be sure to try a Godzilla roll and a Futo Maki - both are fresh, crispy, and delicious. The tempura shrimp in a couple of the sushi rolls is delicious, and I've always wanted to try one of their tempura dinners - but, once I get in the door, I just can't pass up my favorites. The wait staff is efficient - not overly friendly, but certainly not rude. I think it may have to do with an amount of language issue. The decor is a little died-and-went-to-live-in-the-nineties dated - but clean and comfortable and attractive. Tables are big enough to handle several plates at each person's place...not always the case in sushi restaurants! I recommend it as a terrific "everyday" sushi spot ... maybe not what you're looking for when a special occasion demands something a little more posh. read more

I'm a stickler for authentic food and Kumo is not exactly true to form. For Hamden it is a nice addition but would not be my first suggestion to folks for Japanese food. Great for big groups and child friendly. PS - Bring your take out containers for left overs! read more

Fantastic sushi and lunch/dinner boxes for a great price. They recently (within the last month or two) made everything 50% off so the prices are even better. During lunch time regular rolls go from $2.00 to $4.00 (ish). Special rolls are usually between $10 and $17. The atmosphere isn't phenomenal, though they did just take out a wall of booths so they may be re-configuring the restaurant and that might change, but its perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. Service is always very quick, there is always parking, and the food has been nothing short of great every time I've gone. 5 stars for my favorite restaurant in Hamden. read more

There's a bit of a discount sushi war going on in the greater New Haven area. We did some half price rolls on a Sunday night, and I was a little shocked at how crowded they were. The service was really slow, and I wasn't too impressed with the food. I think I prefer Sakura's on Sunday night instead. Note: My biggest pet peeve of any restaurant: don't ask if we would like a refill of fountain soda and then charge us an extra $2.00 for it. We spent more on a couple of sodas than we did for the sushi. You're making $1.80 per glass on the fountain soda...come on! read more

Kumo has amazing sushi, the sweet potato and the avocado and peanut are by far the best, especially if you are not particularly into the whole fish thing. Make sure you go between 11-3 so you can get teh 50% of deal. The tempora is also very good and it's always fun to watch the chef cook for you when you order hibachi. The fried ice cream is amazing, and you must try a scorpian bowl if you're in the mood for alcohol. read more

One of my new favourites in the New Haven area (even though I've since moved to central CT, I still visit Kumo when I am in the area). Kumo has sushi and hibachi available, as well as a fair variety of other Japenese dishes at sit-down tables. I've been to Kumo about 5 times now. I've always found the wait staff to be minimally friendly, but they are very quick and efficient, so I won't deduct points for that. Any points that I would have taken are MORE than made up by the fact that they offer 50% OFF sushi Mon-Sat (11a-3p), and ALL DAY SUNDAY. If you're a sushi-lover like myself, this is great news. Their prices are already reasonable, but when I found myself paying a mere $3-$4 for a delicious lunch of sushi, I was in heaven! I will go back again and again. I can't speak from personal experience with the hibachi, as I have not gotten it at this restaurant, but my friends tell me it is excellent (both the "show" and the food itself), so I wouldn't think twice about going there for hibachi one of these nights. read more

My friends and I have been there plenty of times and always have had issues with them. Today we ordered chicken hibachi and found hair in it. We called the server over and she proceeded to say how "no one in the back has this color hair". Arguing with us!!!! She then called the manager over and the manager put the hair on a napkin on the table! She began to argue with us saying "no one has this kind of hair". Customer is always right, it shouldn't matter. They finally agreed to make us a new dinner. About 10 minutes later she comes over with a plate of chicken; with no vegetables. They found arguing about it easier than comping our meal. It took us about 45 minutes for them to finally take it off our check. Trouble service! I will never be going back there again nor do I recommend it. read more

Ordered sushi and a side of noodles, didn't receive my noodles until after everyone finished their meals. Nope. This review is more of a comparison to another local sushi place. I used to go to Kumo all of the time and then it just started to taste like they were using a lower quality food product. The owner was always very polite and cared about what people thought but then he disappeared and we didn't see him for months. Service and quality suffered and we stopped going at that point. After a two year break, I returned today to give them another chance. Kumo and Sakura both have half price sushi specials and are within a few minutes of each other so you would expect pricing and size to be close to the same. Compared to Sakura's sushi, Kumo's sushi is much smaller with less ingredients. Most of the pricing at Kumo is also higher than Sakura. I could live with that if the food was a better quality and it just isn't. We spent 45 minutes waiting for 4 sushi rolls before we just asked them to make them to go. It took another 5 minutes for them to come out and then a few more minutes to be wrapped. At that point, we were out of time for lunch and had to eat them at our desk. To add insult to injury, we watched numerous people walk in and place an order for takeout and get their food within 5 minutes during our stay. These were not call ins, these were people reading from the menu and having the order put in while we watched. As we were leaving, we heard a number of other tables start to revolt because they still had not been served. There were a total of 7 tables dining and 4 of them were still waiting for food for over a half hour. I like to give second chances and did, only to be rewarded with substandard food and really poor customer service. Be sure to check out Sakura Gardens on Dixwell Ave if you are looking for a good meal. Avoid Kumo. read more

Note: this is just a rating of the hibachi experience, not their sushi, sashimi, etc. menu. I greatly enjoyed Kumo a lot. The show the chef puts on is fun, with the saki and fried vegetable the chef shoots toward your mouth. Also liked that the TVs(at least at the Hamden location, not sure about the New Haven location) were just in the front half of the restaurant, and not the back where groups sit for the hibachi chef experience, since it encourages conversation within your group and nearby groups. Also a plus that the food still tasted good when I reheated it up a few days later, since there are a lot of places I've eaten at where the food very quickly goes bad after you take it home. read more

This used to be my go-to place but today completely changed that. I showed up to find the dining area almost completely empty. My server spoke barely enough English to understand my order. To make matters worse, my food had a hair in it and they only compensated the meal 20%. The new management is terrible and the place has really gone down hill. I'm just confused. I got the hibachi chicken dinner. I will say the vegetables and soup were perfectly fine. BUT The dressing for my salad was mayonnaise. the chicken was so dry my roommate had to chug a bottle of Gatorade. A BOTTLE. To keep himself from choking. The rice was mediocre the noodles were weird. Idk I feel bad writing these kind of reviews but I just hope the chef sees this and tweaks his recipes a lil. I have been there several times and each time the sushi was very fresh. The rolls are on the smaller size, I do prefer larger pieces. Last night I had the hibachi for the first time and the chef was entertaining. He did your standard volcano onion and flipping the food into your mouth tricks(pretty good aim). They are very generous with shooting the sake into your mouth, they gave a lady at our table at least 5 sake shots (as long as you don't mind getting sake all over your shirt). I ordered the steak medium although it was slightly overcooked it was pretty good. Anyway people really go to hibachi for the show not necessarily the food, after a few bites it all taste the same. Recommend: sweet potato rolls Tips: Go before 3:00 pm and the sushi is half price. Do not order sake at the hibachi table you will get as many free shots as you like. read more

I went here with my partner and we got hibachi, a California roll, spicy salmon roll, and one of the vegetable rolls. Hibachi and California roll were average, vegetable roll was surprisingly good, and the spicy salmon was mediocre. Service wasn't great. The food came at an appropriate time and was as requested, but the server was very rude. I asked some basic questions about the food and received eye rolls and the server wasn't knowledgeable about what was on the menu. Underwhelming experience. My Husband really loves Kumo so we stop in often. The sushi is always good but the service is extremely slow. I usually order an entree instead of sushi, we never receive our meal at the same time.
