Thought we would give the Doyle lounge a try - it looked cozy and seemed to be happening. The host was fantastic and friendly, got us great seats right away. So as of now we've been sitting in the lounge for 30 minutes. Still no water (we did ask). We put in a drink order about 15 minutes ago - my wife asked about one of the liqueur in her drink and the waitress told her "it comes in a bottle." Not sure how that is helpful in describing a drink. All in all - stayed an hour, never saw our waitress again, ended up guessing at our bill and leaving cash. Great atmosphere, really nice music, and horrible service. Probably won't be back. Unless we really just want to sit for a few hours and nurse one drink. It is a nice lounge just don't expect service once you're seated. read more

First off, this place is perfect for either an afternoon business meeting or a cocktail later in the evening. Just a great, plush, mid-century vibe. The real hero here in terms of staff is Betty. Doyle Bar gives me that American Horror Story ambience found in their 'Hotel' season. It gives you that 1960s vibe with their vintage furniture, swanky servers, but surprises you with their 1980s music. I came here to meet a friend, and he told me they switched to the name of Doyle Bar about a year ago. I would be curious to see why they rebranded. In regards to the drinks, I got one drink (not much of a drinker) and that was their TNT cocktail; ingredients included Tequila, Gunpowder Tea, Lemon, and Honey. In one word it was refreshing (not too overpoweringly sweet and left me feeling satisfied). I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for something chill to do around DuPont circle. The servers here took me about 15 minutes to serve me, and I had to flag one of them down, but I ultimately did like that one drink I tried. read more

Foreigners beware... they'll reject service outright if you're not carrying your passport (a travel hazard) to have a beer. Your country issued ID is apparently insufficient. We came here with my two family members from Colombia, and they stayed for a week-- we had no issues at any bar or restaurant across the district with their country issued IDs (they each had 2 forms of IDs from Colombia with their date of birth and date of issue). The fact that the IDs didn't have a date of expiration (which is uncommon because they're permanent IDs) meant that they couldn't order anything alcoholic despite having each 2 forms of IDs with clear indications and their fingerprints that they're over 21. What does it matter when it expires? I should have asked them when my Washington, DC license expired since they were so keen on using this as an excuse. We spoke to the manager who simply shrugged and said "you should carry your passport" yeah because that's responsible-- if I lose my bag with my passport, what do I do? I have to notify the embassy and wait months for my passport. That's why state/country issued card IDs are a thing... Yeah guys let's go have a drink- don't forget your passports!!! This is a completely arbitrary and very silly policy that lost them service for good. read more

This was a regular spot for me before I moved away from DC ten years ago (when it went by the name Bar Dupont). After moving back, I was very pleasantly surprised to see the impressive renovation and rebranding as the Doyle Bar! I made a point to bring my wife here while taking her on a memory-lane tour of the city a couple months ago -- and we've been back multiple times since. The staff are extremely courteous, professional, and knowledgeable of the menu and drinks, the bar staff have built up a great drinks menu -- the Beet It, under their seasonal drinks, is a particular favorite -- and the atmosphere of the place is perfect on a cold late Fall evening. I'll certainly be returning as a regular once again. read more

Bar Dupont is an awesome choice for happy hour. My friends and I came here before dinner on a Saturday. We ordered a couple round of drinks (I had a glass of prosecco and then a glass of rose) and shared some fries. You also get complimentary snacks to start: almonds, cashews, pistachios, wasabi peas, and peanuts. We stayed at Bar Dupont for around two hours and went through three small plates of these! I have mixed feelings about Bar Dupont. The first time I came here, it was with a large alumni group and we had reserved the space toward the back of the restaurant. The service had been quite good and overall, we were pleased with everything. When I returned last week with two friends, all my positive memories shattered. We started with a round of drinks, some of which were OK and another of which was really not good. The hot toddy (which my friend ordered with bourbon) tasted like watered-down lemon water. Yes, lemon water that was then further watered down. I had the Green Elephant, a silver tequila-based cocktail with grapefruit juice, lime juice, and Green Chartreuse. I was pleasantly surprised that the grapefruit juice was nicely balanced against the tequila without being overpowering. The mezcal-based Black and Blue drink was OK--it had blueberries, which was interesting, but despite the presence of mezcal was rather underwhelming. On the food front, one friend ordered the Wagyu been bacon cheeseburger, cooked medium. When the waitress sat the burger down and almost ran away, we all sort of looked over at the burger because it was clearly charred on the outside. It was definitely well done and not medium. He politely requested to have another burger cooked medium, and when the waitress brought it back, she ran off again without seeing whether this one was actually going to work. That's a pretty standard practice when a dish has been sent back, so it was surprising. This second burger was better than the first, although still overcooked and with veggies that weren't the freshest...my friend rated this burger a 2 out of 5 and overall experience a one. Because I will fall for an entrée with duck any day, I ordered the duck sliders. First, my other two friends had their dishes--the above mentioned incident with the burger had happened and he had his SECOND burger--so after 40 minutes I asked if they could check on the duck sliders. When I mentioned it to the waitress, she had that, "Oops, forgot" look on her face, so I knew that was what had happened. When they finally arrived after nearly an hour, I was sad to see that they were also overcooked. Overcooked duck is the worst. It was nearly impossible to find anyone serving. On the one hand, the restaurant was relatively busy, although not as busy as it is at other times. When we went to pay at the end, I had to flag down someone else to find our waitress, who summarily popped out from the back and gave us our check. Unfortunately, they had charged us for BOTH of the burgers, including the one that was sent back, and we were frankly trying to dash out of there so I only glanced briefly at the check and slipped my card in the check book. Minutes later, after realizing the charge was too much, it took a while to call her back again to reverse the first charge and get the corrected check. WARNING: DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU VALUE YOUR SOBRIETY I went there last night (11/11/23) for anniversary mocktails and an appetizer. The tuna tartare was overpriced and extremely sparse on the tuna. The server came over so infrequently that requests or orders would take 30ish minutes to come through. But far worse than any of that, the servers casual indifference to our sobriety was appalling. They gave me a Diet Coke with vodka in it. They came back to the table after a minute or so and said "you don't drink, right? Well the coke has vodka in it. So it's free if you want it, but otherwise I'll get you a new one!" We still got charged for it. Compounding things, my fiancé ordered one mocktail and they brought the wrong one over. We then asked our server if he was confident they didn't add alcohol to her drink. He was not empathetic, he was not kind, he did not care when he responded: "I don't know, that's sort of one you -- did you taste it?" That drink was also not comped. There was no apology, there was no "oh I'm so sorry for screwing up in such a impactful way, how could we be so inconsiderate and careless?" Just... nothing. I have never drank for personal reasons, so I don't really care on a deep level about their screw up, but my fiance is two years sober. That sort of thing never should have happened. And once it did, they should have shown basic human kindness, empathy, and been apologetic. Do not go to this bar (the menu has non-alcoholic options, so it's not like they aren't appealing to folks who don't drink!) if you are hoping to remain sober. And if you must, watch them pour your drinks. read more

This was the first time there since the renovation, and they did a beautiful job with the decor. I'm teetering here. Sometimes you fall in love with the potential of a person. What I mean is sometimes, you are drawn to what someone could become, or what they are capable of. However, today is today and there are no guarantees that they will reach (or strive) for that potential in the future. Same thing applies for businesses. This is pretty much how I feel about Bar Dupont; so much potential, however it still manages to come up a little short of excellent. They have a pretty good menu and the food I've ordered has been pretty tasty, albeit a little overpriced. However, that is to expected at a restaurant/lounge that is part of an high-end hotel. On this day I order the chicken caesar salad and split a fat juicy burger and fries with my dining companion. The chicken caesar was pretty good, although I wish I had requested dressing on the side. It weighed the salad down a bit. If you like anchovies...there you go! They've got that covered. The chicken was a little dry, but it was still decent. The burger was very good too and had a great grilled taste to it. It was probably about a quarter pound with two heaping bacon slices, lettuce, tomato (that was a little soggy) and cheese (for $2 more). The bun was really fresh, with a light gloss to it and was just about perfect! I also enjoyed the steak cut fries. They had just enough salt and crispness to them. The first glass of Diet Coke we were brought out was as flat as Kiera Knightley's chest! I was just going to roll with it but my friend who ordered the same piped up about it. Our server was very nice, apologetic and immediately brought us fresh, carbonated ones. In the evening, the ambiance here is stellar: swanky, laid back, chic but I must caution you that the drinks as well are a bit pricey. There is also a small outdoor dining area, with heat lamps and umbrellas right off Dupont Circle where you can watch the hustle and bustle of the city. As much as I would love to give Bar Dupont one more star, I just can't. Maybe one day it will reach it's true potential, but for right now it is what it is...which is "A-OK." read more

Came in for dinner and drinks on a rainy Friday night. I liked where we were seated, it was near a window and comfy. I made the comment to a friend I felt like I was in an episode of Mad Men. Unfortunately, it seems being seated in this corner meant we were forgotten about. It was not clear who our server was, someone different came over to check on us each time and didn't seem to know if we'd been helped or not. I'd order a drink and wait 15 minutes for it to arrive. I had a bourbon on the rocks and a draft beer so no mixing was needed. The food came out cold and when we asked to have it warmed up it took about 15 minutes to come out, we had to ask about it twice. Finally, my friend ordered a drink, but the server brought the wrong one and then it was a long wait for the correct cocktail to be brought back. The only part that was quick was us asking for our check and it being brought to us. For the price ($80) the service and food was not worth it, nor was it worth going out in the bad weather. read more

I love Bar Dupont for their happy hour. Late night/weekends aren't really my scene here - Venu gets it right with the clientele. The happy hour menu is unfortunately unavailable on their website, which is annoying. Specialty cocktails are $6; no discount on food. I'm a fan of the Manhattan or Old Fashioned, and in the summer, their blueberry gin cocktail. Food wise, definitely get the calamari - it's always hot, crisp, and perfectly done. Skip the flatbreads though, as there are better pizza options nearby. Happy hour used to be every day; not sure if it still is; ends at 6, however. The patio is quite nice and the heat lamps are appreciated. Service has always been friendly, and the ambiance chic. read more

I started patronizing Bar Dupont almost a decade ago--long before I started using Yelp! While the space and management team have undergone several transitions, Bar Dupont consistently exceeds expectations. The space is located right off of Dupont Circle, but it is a space set aside. The floor to ceiling windows facing the Circle keep out most of the street noise, and patrons keep the space hopping. Seating is selected on a first-come-first-serve basis, so if you wish to secure a seat next to the windows, it is suggested you arrive early. If one prefers a quieter more intimate experience, there is another indoor seating area that runs along 19th Street. Outdoor seating along 19th Street is also available during the warmer months of the year. As far as I'm aware, Bar Dupont did away with its happy hour specials. read more

We went for my friend's birthday. I had heard lovely things about this bar and was so excited to check it out. Unfortunately, I was deeply disappointed in the utter disrespect from the wait staff. The drinks were great, the ambiance was fine, but unfortunately our evening was ruined by the rude and unhelpful waitress who refused to split our checks. When we asked for a reason, instead of giving us a real answer, she went and got the manager. After the manager complied with our request, we waited 45 minutes for our checks. If you're planning on bringing a group of more than two people here, I would highly recommend that you go elsewhere, where the service is more accomodating. read more

Or if the service is just terrible in general. They're slow with everything- slow to hand us menus- slow to take our orders-slow to serve us-don't check in at all - and quick to give us the check. We were greeted with a smile upon entrance to restaurant by manager. We were advised to seat where we would like. So we sat by the window, which was great for people watching on DuPont circle. It's been restyled as part of a larger make-over of the Dupont Circle hotel, giving it a more mid-century classic feel that will remind you of stylish cocktail bars of yesteryear. The space is both large and intimate at the same time, with warm colors and comfortable seating that encourage you to settle in and enjoy some nicely prepared cocktails while catching up with friends. The service is quite attentive, with our server Samir making sure we were well-taken care of, and the vibe just exerts a certain cool. Bar DuPont was absolutely terrible. I would never come back here again. First of all, the bartenders are horrible. They blatantly just won't serve you, just because, why do your job? I came 7 minutes before happy hour was ending for a final drink. They stood there wiping things down and talking to one another while I was clearly trying to get their attention. They finally took my order with 2 minutes left and specifically told them I was trying to make HH. Two glasses of wine should be quick, right? Nope. The bartender went back to talk to his friend for a minute, poured my drink, then stood at the computer monitor for like 60 seconds slowly "entering" my order. He then comes back to me with my card and says "sorry HH is over." Like........ it was the most deliberately rude act I've ever experienced from a bartender. To make matters even worse, once I got outside, my server lied about what the happy hour prices. When we asked her about the discrepancy on our bill, she got defensive and was like "fine just don't tip me." Like........ why try and guilt us for your mistake? Of course were going to tip you, we're not rude people. The waitress also brought us the wrong check, offered to split our check for us and then double charged us across checks thinking, again, that we wouldn't notice. Overall it was a really frustrating experience. Their drinks are wayyyy overpriced to begin with, so if I'm going to overpay for alcohol and mediocre food, I will not be doing it here. I LOVE the visual appeal and staff. The music is smartly chosen, diverse, but not intrusive. The bar staff are helpful, relaxed, but polished! Just a wonderful, comfortable experience overall. I'm definitely going to consider Doyle as a place to stay the next time I fly up to the area based exclusively on how well run the Bar seems to be. Well oiled machine that will sooth and replenish! I love wheat beers, and had barely asked what they might suggest before I was presented with 3 from which to choose (non-wheat, but, found a yummy one). I also tried The Doyle version of an Aperol Spritz (sp?) which had lemon as well and it is a perfect Summer Cocktail! SO much better than the original. I wish I was staying in DC longer just so I could return a few times! Right on DuPont Circle, so lovely view of the Park and fountain, although I couldn't stop checking out the high end retro design choices and fluted warm wood decor...so nice. GO! read more

Wow. This is how to do a renovation. While I liked Bar Dupont as is, the upgrades to the space are incredible. Overall the design scheme is much improved and the bar appears much more high end. They redecorated the interior to appear almost as if you're in a plush private library, it's a gorgeous space to enjoy a cocktail and watch the goings on in Dupont Circle. My one gripe with the new bar is that prices seem to have gone up slightly post reno (to be expected of course). Definitely check this place out if you like hotel bars tastefully done with prime people watching vantage points. read more

This is a very nice bar situated in Hotel Dupont. It's dimly lit with nice furniture; just great decor all-around. My friends and I ordered a wide range of drinks: Gimme S'more cocktail, Honey Pear cocktail, Guinness, and scotch. Snacks provided were three kinds of nuts, but I can only recall two: corn nuts and wasabi peas. My drink was the Gimme S'more cocktail, which had some marshmallow vodka in it (yum!), but it was a tad on the sweet side. While delivering the Honey Pear cocktail, the waiter almost dropped it and made an attempt to catch it; however, as he caught it in the air, it hit a ceiling light and some splashed onto my friend's head and shirt. An apology was given, but there was no proactive offer of a comped drink. After bringing it up to him, only the Guinness was comped, but the poor friend, who was dripping with sparkling wine, had ordered scotch. This is not very good service. Despite the great ambiance and beautiful bathroom, this place still gets only 3 stars. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover--or a bar by its facade. It's a lovely place inside and out, but... I'd been wanting to try Bar Dupont for quite awhile and finally had the opportunity to do so when the fiance had a meeting there. I met him after his meeting, sitting down at his table at 6:05 pm. At 6:10, I called over one of the two servers who'd been waiting on them, asking if he would wipe off the table and advising him that we wanted to place a dinner order. At 6:25, the fiance called over the other server (because the first one disappeared) who'd been serving them and asked her to take our order. At 6:40 pm the food came but my drink still had not. When when we inquired about it, we were told that it is a pre-batch and they were waiting for it to be brought upstairs. At $13 a glass, I do not want to hear that my cocktail is a "pre-batch". This isn't happy hour, the drink isn't $6 and hopefully not rail! I had ordered carrot ginger soup which is supposed to come with bread. Mine didn't. I tried to get a server's attention to bring it, but it took a few minutes and once I finally did get to tell her, it took another 10 minutes after that to get the bread. By the time it came, the fiance had finished his steak sandwich (made I believe with NY Strip and a horseradish sauce, which was quite good) and my soup (which had a very strong ginger taste, but was otherwise rather bland) had already turned cool. Overall I was very disappointed with our experience at Bar Dupont, as it has been one of our worst dining experiences in DC thus far. They get one star for the decor and one for the steak sandwich. read more
