Happy Hour here is glorious. Otherwise, did you realize it's a great place to get some work done? Forget Panera - Bar Dupont is friendly to the laptop crowd, partially because this fact is never taken advantage of. Just vaguely keep your tab up and you're fine. Plus, great atmosphere and lots of windows for people watching. As others mentioned: snacks? A treat. I love a bar that serves nibbles, and a bar that serves creative cocktails even more. Happy Hour is obviously best for prices, but outside of that, the cocktails are comparable to other cocktail bars in DC. read more

It's about time to write a review about my favorite hang out spot. Bar DuPont has a fantastic location. Right on DuPont circle. It has this beautiful outdoor patio where you can sit, have a drink, munching on the complimentary mixed nuts and watch people, or use their complimentary wifi and do some work! Very relaxing atmosphere. Even the inside is beautiful and classy! And always crowded. I wouldn't recommend you to eat here. The food is horrible! I've tried few times to order and twice it was so bad to the point I had to return the food. Just stick with drinks ...Anyway the atmosphere there makes you drink even more.. Service, don't expect good service! Again servers here are the slowest servers I've ever seen. You barely catch their attention... Most of the time they even disappear. You always have to ask that you need this and that... Even the check it takes them forever to get it.. Few of them are very friendly but still slow, yeah very slow! I'm giving 3.5 star only because I enjoy my time here despite the bad service and the food.. Location saved them big time! They ve got the best corner in DuPont circle read more

Don't judge a book by its cover--or a bar by its facade. It's a lovely place inside and out, but... I'd been wanting to try Bar Dupont for quite awhile and finally had the opportunity to do so when the fiance had a meeting there. I met him after his meeting, sitting down at his table at 6:05 pm. At 6:10, I called over one of the two servers who'd been waiting on them, asking if he would wipe off the table and advising him that we wanted to place a dinner order. At 6:25, the fiance called over the other server (because the first one disappeared) who'd been serving them and asked her to take our order. At 6:40 pm the food came but my drink still had not. When when we inquired about it, we were told that it is a pre-batch and they were waiting for it to be brought upstairs. At $13 a glass, I do not want to hear that my cocktail is a "pre-batch". This isn't happy hour, the drink isn't $6 and hopefully not rail! I had ordered carrot ginger soup which is supposed to come with bread. Mine didn't. I tried to get a server's attention to bring it, but it took a few minutes and once I finally did get to tell her, it took another 10 minutes after that to get the bread. By the time it came, the fiance had finished his steak sandwich (made I believe with NY Strip and a horseradish sauce, which was quite good) and my soup (which had a very strong ginger taste, but was otherwise rather bland) had already turned cool. Overall I was very disappointed with our experience at Bar Dupont, as it has been one of our worst dining experiences in DC thus far. They get one star for the decor and one for the steak sandwich. read more

Doyle Bar formerly known as Bar DuPont is a breath of fresh air. I loved Bar DuPont and I do not have any complaints. The new Doyle bar is a step up of the old bar. I am not sure why the name changed and the bar was upgraded, but it is nice. 1. The service was on par for many bars. I am glad the server Grim was our server. 2. The quality and freshness of the drinks were pretty good. However, I do miss the old bar menu. 3. The bar food was tasty! Please bring back the wasabi peas. read more

Not the first place I'd choose to get a drink in DuPont circle, but if you're staying at the Hotel DuPont, it's an ideal place to start as it's central and had large windows facing the street and DuPont Cirlce. Each time I passed it while in the hotel lobby, it was quite crowded and roaring with conversation, laughter, and the clinking of cups. When I finally went to get a drink, I waited at the bar for a few minutes, and then once I got my drink, I waited a few more minutes for a seat. There's not an excessive ammount of seating, or standing room, but once you settle in, you'll enjoy having a drink here... And they serve an assortment or bar nuts and treats read more

If you're planning on going out for mixed drinks, make sure to order directly from the bartender and not the servers. There's a great bartender with blonde hair that makes some awesome drinks and gives you just a tad bit more for your money. Nice, modern bar. I've been here a couple of times so far. The first time, I sat outside and service was prompt. The second time, more recently, my friends and I sat by the hotel lobby and then made our way to the bar. The drinks are a little pricey, but this is Dupont, the bar is attached to a hotel, and the crowd is pretty swanky. I highly recommend their fresh baked cookies, whether you're there for food or drinks. It comes with a giant glass of whole milk (which might not sit well with alcohol, but eat the cookies!). read more

Went to Bar Dupont last night for my birthday and because I wanted to check out how it looks after the extensive remodel. This used to be one of my favorite bars in DC; I'd say I would probably go there 3-4 times a month. Unfortunately, last night was not a good experience at all. The newly redone bar area is beautiful with plenty of comfortable seating, but that's where the positive review ends. The service was extremely slow. The new drinks and small bites menus are also insanely overpriced for the quality. I ordered a glass of the Perrier Jouet champagne. The server brought over the bottle and a champagne flute to pour my glass in front of me. I immediately saw that he was giving me the last few drops left in the bottle. When poured what little was left into my glass I could see that it was flat. He continued to empty the bottle anyway and then said he'd go get a new one to top me off. Normally I wouldn't complain, but at $20, I asked if I could just have a fresh glass from the new bottle. He graciously agreed but poured me the smallest glass of champagne I have ever received in my life. It couldn't have been more than 1/3 of the flute. I noticed around the room that others who ordered champagne were receiving these small pours. All in all, I'm ready sad about this experience because I used to love Bar Dupont so much. I have spent the last three New Year's Eves there, in fact. I doubt I'll be returning anytime soon though. There are equally nice bars in the area that offer equally good drinks (at more reasonable prices). read more

This is a great spot and great location on DuPont circle. It is right on the corner across from a Starbucks and has the best vantage point on the circle. We wanted a good and quick bite to eat while site seeing and we walked in just to get the menu and the host at the front desk was very nice and accommodating. We were able to get a great seat right outside on the corner. The server was very nice and attentive and helped us pick a low gluten beer and we had two burgers that were amazing. I would recommend this place if you are close and it is nice enough weather to sit outside and enjoy some good food and drinks. They also have some nice seats inside with all glass window which would probably be nice if the weather gets cold. read more

After having worked across the street from the hotel and bar for almost four years, I was eager to check out the remodel. It definitely looks fresh - like a mix of mid-century modern and a scene out of the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - but I did love the comfy furniture. I just went for drinks with a group and we were able to snag a good spot with enough room for all five of us. We didn't really order any fancy drinks but what we got was all good. We also munched on the truffle fries and the cheese & charcuterie board, which were perfect snacks. The service was attentive without being overbearing. Overall, good experience, though now that I no longer live or work in the neighborhood, doubt I'll be back any time soon. P.S. Bathrooms are still out in the hotel. read more

Fully renovated! Unclear if they are still calling it Bar DuPont or now The Doyle. No matter! Worth going! Beautiful, gorgeous space. Upscale vibe. Nice bar menu! Great selection of wines and Irish whiskeys (Green Spot and Yellow Spot!) Wandering by, from the street it draws you in. Nabbed two armchairs and a table in the front windows. No matter it's a hotel bar - it's seriously one of the best hotel bars I have ever seen. Service was friendly and attentive. Winner! read more

Bar Dupont ... as rare and unique as the name! If your friends come in late on Friday and have been traveling all day Bar Dupont is the place to go. Definitely a place to go when you want the expected Dupont / Midtown Washington "experience." The experience wont be exhausting and it is just loud enough to give the illusion of a scene. Grab a snack have a drink. Don't let my comment come off as disparaging; Bar Dupont is exactly what its name purports. A bar in Dupont! The burger I had was good! The service was excellent! The wine, beer, and liquor selection here are fantastic. Cocktails were nicely done and I didn't feel like they were shorting us on the liquor. Nice bites at the bar too. I ordered the chicken wrap which was pretty good: chicken breast, bacon, lettuce, onion, etc etc. Not normally a wrap guy but everything tasted fresh and the chicken was hot. Truffle fries were a nice touch. I had no idea there was a patio, otherwise I probably would have dined outside! Reasonbly priced hh drinks, especially for a "swanky" bar. They have $6 cocktails from 4 to 6 PM. The drinks all sound yummy, but most recently, I found that the cocktails didn't have that much "depth" to them. The cocktails go down easily, but they're kind of one-dimensional, which is fine for $6 cocktails. Really wish that they had HH deals for the food as well. The truffle fries are yummy! Decor is nice and bartenders are friendly. It's a tried and true Dupont Circle hh spot read more

Poutine here is pretty epic when you come in to break a fast. My friend looked at me very suspiciously as I was downing a dish he didn't think was from this planet. He was "very hungry" but ended up getting 2 drinks and no food. Wtf? I don't understand people anymore. Waiters here are very friendly but wtf when 5 of them including the manager come to take our orders. While on the one hand they did seem overly attentive to take care of us (perks of dressing in hobo chic in an suited up place), you wonder if it's really necessary that each one of them follows up on you ordering a glass of water. Bar Dupont was my choice for this year's birthday drinks, and I'd say it fulfilled the role well. Great ambiance. Fireplaces make for a perfect cozy spot as the weather gets colder. The food was also solid. Valet service also makes things easy for when you just have to wear ridiculous shoes, the kind that preclude parking nearby and walking. Bar Dupont is a problem! In honor of the retired DSM-IV, I've divided up some of the major problems with Bar Dupont into 5 axes: Axis I: Long wait time. My friend, who had ordered a duck slider, had to wait more than 45 minutes before he received his entree. Granted, the portion size for this entree was small. 30 minutes into the waiting process, my friend checked in with the waiter on his order, and the response we received had given us the impression that our order had been forgotten. I ordered a Waygu beef burger and had to wait more than 30 minutes before my entree arrived as well. As if this wasn't bad enough, it also took nearly 20 minutes before drinks were delivered to our table. I could've watched an entire episode of Grey's Anatomy before everything was set on the table! Axis II: Stale snacks. While waiting for our entrees, the waiter offered our table some basic snacks (standard protocol), which included an assortment of nuts and crunchy wasabi peas. If it hadn't been for the fact that I was hungry from waiting for food to arrive, I would not have even touched those snacks. The nuts were stale and tasted like they had lost their saltiness days ago. The wasabi peas were bland, and there was barely a hint of spiciness left. If it hadn't been for the fact that they were green colored, I would not have known that I was eating wasabi peas. Axis III: Burger badness. Although I had ordered a medium rare burger, I was surprised to find that the beef patty in my burger was overcooked, and beyond well done. Both sides of the beef patty were char-grilled black, and when I bit into it, the texture was rough, making it difficult to chew. The lettuce in the burger was not fresh, or cleaned well (I could've walked behind the restaurant and picked some leaves from a forest that were of better quality than the lettuce I was offered). When I returned my burger to the kitchen, I was offered a substitute burger, which was tolerable at most, but still had some major deficits (dry, flavorless, dirty lettuce again). The only redeemable quality of the burger was the delicious bacon. At this point, I was too hungry to care, so I pushed through the disappointment and ate the whole thing. Axis IV: Sucky Service. My number one pet peeve is poor customer service. If the waiters were even half as nice as the quality of the restaurant's beautiful image, I would have been pleased. This was certainly not the case tonight. My friends and I received a waitress who probably could not have cared less about whether or not we were enjoying our dining experience. She disappeared for long periods of time, never checked in on how we were doing at our table, and on a few occasions, we had to ask another waiter for basic assistance, including correcting an error on our check (we had been accidentally charged for an extra burger). Axis V: Dreadful drinks. Of course, you can't enjoy a bar without a good drinking experience. This was certainly not the case for anyone at our table. Our waitress informed us that the first several drinks on the menu were no longer available (some of my top choices were part of that category), which deterred me from ordering drinks for myself. The drinks were overall okay in quality (I sampled a few at the table), but when it takes nearly 20 minutes to get your drink, it's definitely not worth the wait. read more

Are you the sort of person who says "Hey, Bitches!" to your girlfriends when you see them? Are you generally not mindful of others, especially when you drink? When you go out, do you like to feel like you are slightly cooler than other people because you are sitting on wicker furniture? If you answered yes to these questions, then Cafe Dupont might be right for you. Don't get me wrong: I've almost always enjoyed the food and service here, and breakfast, though it can feel austere, is generally very tasty. The interior lights are super cool. And I know there are plenty of nice people who use this as an evening watering hole. I've just had one too many conversations interrupted by a loud "F*CK YEAH" at the table next to me to keep going back. The last time my girlfriend and I tried this place someone pushed an errant cigarette butt into my suit as we walked to our table. We ended up crossing the street to Kramerbooks. Kramerbooks lacks the aforementioned wicker furniture and has fewer short skirts, but it has always felt more authentic to me. And I've never heard anyone use the word "bitch" there. read more

Bar Dupont has been my third space outside of the home and the office ever since I moved to DC last August. I love the upscale environment, the excellent service, the unlimited wifi, the Americanos, and the outdoor seating. The food's not half bad either. I recommend the winter salad, the chicken wrap, or the turkey club. I also discovered this ritzy little hotel bar is an excellent place to get work done! Especially during the morning and afternoon. Check out the room attached to the main bar area for tables with more outlet options. In the cooler months, the fireplace is a particularly nice touch :) However, BD gets pretty busy and loud starting 4:30-5PM because you get the afterwork/happy hour (3-6pm) crowd + loud top 40's radio music. Thus, I wouldn't recommend BD between 5-8, mostly because of the awful music, which makes the whole place seem generic. The best time to come is earlier when it's calm and quiet for a delicious americano (always served with a biscuit!), or late-night for a refreshing moscow mule (pick your poison!) accompanied by some classy downtempo or deep house music, which usually starts playing by 10pm. What I appreciate most about BD is that I never feel rushed or judged for sitting at a table, even if i'm there for several hours (before 4pm or after 9pm though, usually). The waiters are very attentive about topping off your water glass and will periodically stop by to politely ask if you need anything, but not in a demanding way. Perhaps because it's a hotel bar, where they expect traveling customers to linger throughout the day? I highly recommend Bar Dupont as one of my favorite metropolitan cafebars! It's my default place to get drinks when I'm in the mood to catch up with a friend or have a sophisticated evening out with the group. The consistently international crowd at BD is a plus too - very "D.C.", but not in the stuffy annoying way. p.s. the location right off Dupont Circle and a short walk from the metro is ultra convenient read more

Watched Obama declare victory on a big screen TV at this bar on election night. Romney was in the bathroom throwing up and we know it wasn't because he drank too much. The crowd here is a little older than the usual college kids who have been drinking Obama kool aid for four years and are punch drunk socialists by now. This is a classy place, especially compared to the bars on the other side of the circle on Connecticut Ave. And they have very nice outdoor seating with heat lamps, so you can sit there on a chilly evening and laugh at shivering people walking by. The drinks aren't cheap but this is good since it scares away younger kids and paves the way for older guys like me to swagger around without looking too creepy to young hipsters. read more

RED LIGHT! My first and likely my last experience at Bar Dupont. Why, you ask? Because as a purveyor of mixology and bartender I found this place to have an air of pretension to a fault that was exacerbated by the action on the drinks. When I pay $11 to $15+ on a drink, I expect that drink to be good. At those prices, the bartenders and I have entered into a contract that they are going to make me a delicious, well-balanced cocktail that is right in all the subtle nuances of its presentation and tastability. The six of us did two rounds of cocktails that included: The Thyme Gimlet Hendricks Bees Knees Red Sangria The Dupon Imperial Bartenders Kiss Kettel Martini Extra Dirty Kettel Martini Kinda Dirty Bombay Dry Gin Martini (No dirt) The flavors were decent enough, especially on the Thyme Gimlet and Bees Knees; however, the Gimlet, which was my drink, was served to me just a degree below room temperature. This is blasphemous. Martinis are to be shaken the sh*t out of for nearly a minute and placed in a pre-chilled glass. For $11, you could at least attempt to cool the thing -- no such attempt was made. I followed it up with the Gin Martini. This one was even warmer than the Thyme Gimlet, a serious sin for a pure liquor cocktail. What's more, on that round of pure martinis, the extra dirty and kinda dirty were delivered as clear as my non-dirty (and equally as warm). According to the folks who had them, they didn't taste any olive in it at all and so informed the waitress who then assured them she would take care of it. So we're sitting there for a moment thinking, "okay, she has a bartender making a new drink," which was the way wrong assumption. She returns with a wine carafe filled with warm olive juice and proceeds to pour it into each of their cocktails to "very" and "kinda" dirty levels. $15 for these martinis. At this point I was mortified! Who does that!? It was enough for me to swallow my martini whole and push on to never return again. What a grip of unsavory pomps! read more

Bar Dupont is one of my favorite hangouts while in DC. On a Sunday afternoon, it can be a relaxing place to just have a glass of wine and watch the world go by. The bar is surrounded by windows and sits right on Dupont Circle, so the views are stellar. At night, the bar transforms into a sexy, glowing lair of all different kinds of people. I prefer to grab a table since the bar area can get rather crowded, but any seat is a good seat once the place gets packed. The bar snacks are great. Wasabi peas, corn nuts and mixed nuts are just the perfect little nibbles alongside a stiff cocktail. Said drinks are fantastic, but they don't come cheap. Consider yourself warned. Service is the one flaw I see with the place. Sometimes it's very good, other times you get the B team. I've also never eaten there so I can't speak for the food, although from what I've seen I think classics like sandwiches and fries (they offer poutine two or three ways) are the way to go. This is definitely a must-stop for me every time I visit DC. read more

Very noisy, but had such a great atmosphere! When I first walked into Bar Dupont, it seemed like a very small space, with an intimate layout, but a quick look-around revealed that this bar was actually quite large, with three distinct settings (bistro, bar, and traditional). I really liked the spot I sat at, which had a floor-to-ceiling glass wall that overlooked bustling Dupont Circle. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/bar-dupont-washington-2?select=TrqN_9w1vT7sm_5Q26cG3A#TrqN_9w1vT7sm_5Q26cG3A Very sexy bar, with friendly, sexy servers in black attire. I wish I was able to take a photo of the lovely bar/counter just across from me, but there were too many people blocking the view. Ordered a glass of (white) Petit Moulin something, $9. It was a small pour (so sad...), but crisp, refreshing, not too sweet, although I kept wishing it was a little sweeter-- the notes mentioned lychee, which piqued my interest. Thought I was going for a salad (hence the white wine selection), but decided to try the Dupont Reuben ($13), http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/bar-dupont-washington-2?select=JysocRzcl36duAxvtVNVUg#JysocRzcl36duAxvtVNVUg the bar's twist on the reuben sandwich. Not much of a twist-- corned beef, swiss cheese, house dressing, and sauerkraut on oh-so-perfectly toasted rye (!). It was a small serving, but the corned beef wasn't very salty (as they tend to be), and it came with fries in a cute mini shopping cart (although fries in mini-shopping carts are so 2007). If you order fries here, be sure to eat them quickly, for they turn soggy fast! (You may opt for a seasonal salad, instead of fries; or truffle fries for an additional $2.) The platter came with new personal-sized bottles of mayonnaise and ketchup, which I was tempted to take home with me- maybe next time. :) The wine menu mentioned a new daily glass of wine offering ($7), so I asked one of the two servers I had tonight, Drew and Briyan, what it was-- a Syrah. Asked if I could try a sample, and got a yes (sweet!). Ended up liking it, and so ordered a glass. (Psst! You may take your unfinished glass of wine with you back to your room- woohoo!) Go for happy hour and sit near the bar. You'll get pretty good service, and there's a huge window facing the circle for people watching. The happy hour deals end early - 6 pm - but they have very good $6 cocktails and free bar snacks (corn nuts and wasabi peas). For happy hour drinks, I usually assume I'm getting some questionable gin from a plastic bottle, but I believe they were using Tanqueray in their happy hour martinis. Swanky place that is connected to Hotel Dupont. Great ambience, good drinks, nice crowd. Went here for an mid-evening gathering with friends and ended up staying until closing. In fact, lots of groups around us stayed until closing as well, so that tells you people were having a good time. Our waitress was extremely pleasant (and from West Germany!), so that definitely made the experience more enjoyable. The drinks menu is a decent size, and they all taste very good. If you like St. Germain, go for drinks with that included - they don't skimp on it. Love that elderflower taste. Of course, they also provide complimentary trays of bar snacks for customers, and they kept them coming throughout the night. High marks for that. The interior decor is classy - wooden everything with cool exposed bulbs hanging from the ceiling in the bar area. One thing that did puzzle me was the large TV in dining room because it didn't flow with the rest of the place. Great service, good ambiance, and quality beverages. Two friends and I returned to Bar Dupont after a hot, sweaty walk up and down Massachusetts Ave. for the EU Embassies Open House. We initially stopped in at Kramerbooks & Afterwords, but upon remembering how overpriced the menu items are and feeling claustrophobic, we decided to venture across NH Ave. to Bar Dupont, where we could relax in the A.C. and people watch the activity in Dupont Circle. Our server was a little slow, but we were in no hurry; we just wanted to revel in the cool air and put our feet up after walking in the heat. I had a Strongbow (a cider from the U.K.), which I had never tried before but that provided ultimate refreshment. We attempted to order the sliders thinking that we had a choice of beef, chicken, or salmon. The waitress notified us that we got one of each, which we found a bit odd. We decided to get two orders and we would mix and match later. They were just what we needed after exhausting our bodies from embassy to embassy. I didn't sample the fries, but my companions said they were delicious with just the right amount of seasoning. It took a WHILE to get the check, but overall, we had a nice experience. We wanted to chill, people watch, and refuel our bodies with good food and drink, and Bar Dupont offered just that. read more
