Downtown Seafood is one of those little hole-in-the-wall local places that you should know about. It's right on Third Street just a few doors north of Town Square on North Blvd. It has an unassuming storefront right by an Irish Bar. The inside is clean, simple, and contemporary. But the main thing about this place is the food, it's pretty special. The food isn't special because it's fancy, in fact it's pretty simple. It's definitely homestyle, and super fresh. It's freshly made to order, and your order will come out quickly. As the name would suggest, they have seafood, both fried and grilled. It can come on bread or without bread. All are good choices. It's piping hot and delicious, and can come with a variety of sides, fries, onion rings, even sweet potato fries. These are all tasty and freshly made. Usually one can get a combo with one's sandwich, which includes fries and a drink. This is nicely priced. However, in addition to the seafood, they make a really good burger. I was craving a homemade burger in downtown Baton Rouge. I found Downtown Seafood and was told in my search that they are known for their burgers and they were so right. I arrived just before closing time which was 2:30pm. I was afraid as I made my way to the counter to order I would be turned away. Pleasantly surprised they were so very nice and accommodating. I ordered the combo Cheeseburger with fries and a bottled water. The price was more than reasonable, especially with the amount of food I received. The burger was very large and loaded with lettuce tomato onion mayo and mustard. I nearly finished it all and seriously wanted to but I was so full. The fries were delicious too. A month ago, I visited Downtown Seafood, as I had done so many times before expecting the same food with the same service. I've been a long time customer of Downtown Seafood. This time was different. Once I arrived back at my office, I called to speak with the owner (who works there), and he told me that he was too busy to speak with me. Such a little gem! My husband got the burger and I got the shrimp po boy and also a side of fried oysters. The shrimp and oysters were so fresh and crispy. The poboy was huge and they didn't skimp on the shrimp! We're from Texas and it's so hard to get fresh delicious seafood like this! My husband says the burger is delicious and perfectly prepared with plenty of cheese and meat seasoned well. I wasn't able to take a picture because we ate it all already oops! The service was excellent! There wasn't anyone at the restaurant when we arrived but the man behind the counter offered us a shrimp to sample and was extremely friendly and happily answered our many questions about the menu! They didn't list poboys on the menu but it was on their front sign and we ordered it no problem. Food was made to order and came out within a few minutes (although we were the only customers at the time... restaurant filled up with at least 10 more ppl as we we were eating tho) Definitely will come here again when we're in town or driving thru. Best Burger in Baton Rouge by far. i'm not sure who else is second but this place is leading that gap by miles. Only open until 3pm and that's a bummer. Really good customer service as the owner greets all his customers. I really forgot about this place and was downtown for a basketball game and it hit me to try it out to see if they were still on point with their food. We'll they haven't missed a beat. I was working at the Raising Canes River Center a few weekends ago and didn't want the food they were serving! I took a short stroll down the street and found this hidden gem! I ordered a HUGE cheeseburger with sweet potato fries for under $10! That's rare to find nowadays. The burger was big, juicy and very delicious! Good, but pace yourself with the portions! Was there on a bustling Friday night and the service was quick. I've waited longer at a Taco Bell or Burger King for vastly inferior food. My companions seemed most pleased by the shrimp "platter," (delivered in a styrofoam box), and the hamburger. The burger in particular was deemed by my ten-year old son to be the "best he'd ever had." I had a sample myself and truly it is satisfying. They have the good sense to dress it properly, that is to say, make a fairly good mess of it. But the little kid held tight and got through most of it, but the burger is too big for a child. Frankly, it's too big for an adult. I had the roast beef po-boy, served warm and dressed out. Their po-boy bread is just great, and all tasted pretty good. But the beef is definitely over-the-counter deli slices warmed up under the broiler, rather than the more sublime slowly-cooked roasts that are sliced and served with "debris" that so defines such a concoction. Beers were $2 a piece the night I was there, and you just reached in a deep cooler, like getting a Coke from the old country store of yesteryear. Portions are just too much, as we learned to our regret after placing the orders. Make sure you share one item with a dining companion, or you'll be (1) taking a good bit home or (2) wishing you hadn't eaten so much! Overall, this place will continue to be a stop when downtown because there aren't too many other quick options with similar fare and it is pretty darned good. read more

I love Downtown Seafood. I work downtown, and it's one of the only places down here with great food. Skip Poboy Lloyd's and head to Downtown Seafood. Smaller selection, but much better food. The *only* menu item I do not recommend is the chicken wings. They taste like they've been twice fried. They smell delicious, but they're just not great. Finding close parking is difficult, but if you don't mind walking a block from Lafayette st, you'll be pleased with the trot. The only other con is he usually closes at 3pm daily, like most downtown restaurants. The best thing to get here is the hamburger. Juicy, fresh, cooked to perfection every time. Mr. Henry takes a lot of pride in his burgers, and was even voted best burger in Baton Rouge before. I can attest to the fact that of all the burger places I have been, including popular destinations like Fat Cow, Mason's and Mooyah, come second or lower to this burger. It is just a simple burger with fresh toppings. If you catch him on the right day, the $10 burger special (with fries and a drink!) can be yours for $5! Just my opinion, highly recommended, worth the trip, you won't regret it. Oh, and he stays open late during downtown events. He was open last year for the Redstick drop, and he's right around the corner from it. read more

What first struck me about this order-at-the-register eatery was the relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Though it's listed as a seafood spot, it also serves hamburgers, grilled cheese and chicken sandwiches along with your typical po-boys and other seafood dishes. As we were preparing to make our order, my parents and I were also impressed that we were given a small plate of fried shrimp to sample, and the shrimp were plump, well-battered, and tasty. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, a grilled cheese sandwich, sweet potato fries, and a fountain drink and paid $18. Considering the large size of the burger, I think I payed a fair price for the meal. The burger was quite delicious with a large, juicy patty prepared in my favorite home-cooked style. Moreover, the bacon was plentifully supplied and was crisp and well-prepared. I also enjoyed the sweet potato fries. My only slight drawback of the place was that my folks and I felt that our meals could have had a bit more peppery punch in the seasoning. But, I left this pleasant, quaint restaurant feeling like I had eaten a delicious, home-cooked meal with a staff that enjoys their job as one of the cooks whistled while he worked. read more

I've walked by this place numerous times in the past and never once considered coming in. Don't be fooled by the exterior, the food here is delicious! My group had shrimp poboy, catfish plate, shrimp plate, cheese burger, fried pickles and onion rings. The fried shrimp were great! The only thing I would give a less than fantastic rating on is the onion rings bc I don't think they were homemade. But everything else tastes wonderful and everything is reasonably priced. read more
