Chimes is forever a staple in Baton Rouge. I love this location, right off of LSU's campus, making it easy to walk to or there's a parking lot in the back. The place is large and they opened up the rooftop in the last few years so there is usually seating available. The food typically comes out fairly quickly, but it can get very busy so a little patience is needed at times. As for the food, this is a classic Cajun spot. Had a great experience at The Chimes Restaurant. The food here is seriously outstanding. I've tried a wide range of things on the menu, and honestly, everything has been consistently amazing. You really can't go wrong no matter what you order. One of the highlights has to be the platters - huge portions and packed with variety (see photo). Definitely come hungry. The atmosphere is also a big part of what makes this place special. It has that classic student energy being so close to LSU - lively, fun, and always buzzing. My friend recommended this restaurant while I was in Baton Rouge we took a Lyft from the Hilton downtown for about $12. It was a great decision to get out of downtown and see the LSU district. Scotty was our server and he was absolutely wonderful! "I've got you" was his famous saying and he certainly did! He had the best smile and giggle! They had many beers on tap and happy to let you taste a few! They had the best crab and Brie soup I've never had anything like it! We tried the Boulin Balls, very interesting sausage and rice with a little kick! We split the Chicken Fried Steak which came with MAC & Cheese and a side garden salad! I placed a takeout order this morning and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I arrived after 30 minutes and still had to wait another 20. I understand it was a busy time due to multiple events in the area, but the bigger issue was the lack of customer service. My order sat on the counter for about 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged it, which already showed a lack of urgency. When I finally got home, I realized my order was incomplete. I ordered the chicken and biscuits brunch, but only received the biscuits with a poached egg that doesn't even go with this item on the menu. Definitely not worth the $15 I paid for. The Chimes was always one my favorite restaurants to frequent while attending LSU in the 1990s. It has gone through quite a few changes over the years, including a major expansion. The look and feel is like I remember. Cozy, yet room for an astounding amount of LSU revelers. A "Cheers" atmosphere. It has been quite awhile since eating here, and I was happy to see that much of what I remember and loved still remains including their menu items. Today, I ordered a Fried Shrimp Poboy and it must've been good or I was really hungry, because I wolfed it right down. Another favorite of mine has always been the Fried Alligator appetizer. Decided to take my fiancé out for a meal, The Chimes was the only place open till 11:00 PM on a Monday and figured it would be a good fit considering we've been here in the past and have not had any issues until tonight. The service was good but very slow. The place was almost full so we understood the wait. We ordered our food and waited about an hour and a half to finally get our salads because they were so behind on the food. We were enjoying ourselves so we didn't mind the wait, however, what changed the atmosphere for us really quickly was when a cockroach about 4-5 inches long flew down from the ceiling towards our table and landed on the wall directly next to my fiancés head. We are terrified of cockroaches so naturally we jumped out of our seats. I ended up swatting the roach off the wall and stepping on it. Shortly after our food arrives. After what just happened, we were no longer in the mood to eat, paid our tab and left. Great location near LSU. Huge menu with surprisingly really good food despite it also being a great sports bar venue. Lots of big screen TVs to catch national games. It's fairly noisy, but that's too be expected given the target audience. We had boudin balls with a white sauce that had a kick of horseradish. They were yummy. Also tried crawfish and Jack cheese-topped French fries fries. That was a unique flavor twist with the potatoes. The seafood lasagna was fantastic. We came here as a group of nine people. I don't know that this restaurant sees large groups very often. Our waitress was friendly, but she's very easily became flustered with so many people requesting so many different things of her. The many mentions that because they get so many tours that they are willing to provide samples of several items to customers on request. I think aside from myself and my Little and everybody was making request of different available samples. The waitress I don't think anticipated a group this heavy. She had to go and get a larger tray. She had a lot of help. Taking orders and trying to make separate checks was very difficult for her. We did order a lot of food and a lot of drinks. A great time was had. I had the pork scallopini. I wasn't really expecting much of the pork, but actually it was phenomenal. It was cooked to perfection. It was juicy and tender, not at all hard chewy or overdone. A lot of food was ordered at our table, but I can only speak to that one dish, personally. My little one and I shared my entrée. It was definitely more than enough for the both of us. And like I said, it was darn good. The restaurant seems like it would be the perfect place to hang out at the bar and catch a baseball game or the local Louisiana State University team playing. I could see this definitely being a fun hangout spot. There is an upstairs area, but we didn't go and check that space out. Aside from our kind of irritable, seeming waitress, everything was really nice. All the other hostess staff were very friendly and sweet. All the other waiters that were helping our waitress were very friendly and were nice enough to make small talk with us. It was a fun time. The food was great. I went there on a LSU-Alabama gameday and the vibes were immaculate. BUT, they were only immaculate because we got there early and had a place to sit. On a gameday, every single people in the western hemisphere is trying to party on the rooftop so make sure to get there in plenty of time. For the amount of people there, service was great. Checked out Chimes this past weekend and the seafood gumbo and blackened gator was so good I had to visit again. The upstairs is great with the LSU vibes. Service was outstanding, first day I had Bella, and second time had Dani, both were super nice. I will be back next time in Baton Rouge.
