Maybe because it's Friday night on a holiday weekend in a college town, but the atmosphere in theis Baton Rouge bistro is "kickin'"! Boudin balls and crawfish mac and cheese after 8 hours on I10...and the beers didn't hurt. Staff is friendly and enthusiastic, food and beers also top notch! read more

Don't make the trip to this place for anything but their selection of beers, which are so abundant that maybe just that makes it worth the journey. The food is mediocre at best. I was served a "large" gumbo, and I don't even want to know how small the lesser size serving might be. The Dungeness crab leg thrown into the gumbo was a nice touch -- something to crack it open so you can eat it would have been a really nice touch, too. They didn't have a nut cracker or anything, so I guess that crab leg was decorative? I ordered a house salad, and by dictionary definition I guess it was a salad. It had three ingredients: wilted iceberg lettuce, croutons, and a couple of fridge-aged cherry tomatoes of the flavorless variety. Bet the profit margin on that salad is HUGE! I don't go out to dinner because I want to heap more profit on someone's margins -- I want good food. I can't say enough about the great staff at this restaurant, and I truly mean that.. They're friendly, hard working and they really make you feel special as a customer. The service is nothing less than excellent, and I know what to look for in this regard -- you may have seen my long history of reviews on Yelp. I bet even the staff is bothered by the odor of urine wafting through the restaurant from the men's room. I certainly was. Bottom line: this place could be world-class if it had new management. Let's hope that happens soon. read more

Had to come to one of BR's staple restaurant since being in town. Walked in and got greeted and seated swiftly. Server said he was pretty new on the job, but did a great job in terms of communication and service. Food came out hot and fresh besides the bow tie on the spinach and artichoke dip being very hard and crunchy. The restaurant was nice and pack continuing their years of service in the food industry. Would come back again for the friendly service, atmosphere and good food. read more

Chimes is a staple in Baton Rouge. I recently visited home and after helping my sister move into her dorm, I had to stop by. This place was around when I was in college a long time ago lol. And the food is still phenomenal and fresh. The margaritas are potent and tasty! It took about 45 minutes for us to get a table. A ton of people were there. We had a few drinks at the bar with pretty quick service. Once we were at our table, we ordered the fried alligator appetizer. I had the barbecue shrimp Poboy. I was only able to eat half of a half. It was so much food so I definitely had to take it home. This place is pretty affordable for seafood and Louisiana cooking. It did take some time for our food to come out, but it was very lively in the building. I put some pictures up of the decor in there. Pretty traditional for a Louisiana style restaurant. Definitely a good place to stop and get lunch or dinner! The parking has never been good, so be ready to walk if you can't find a spot in the lot near the restaurant. read more

Chimes is forever a staple in Baton Rouge. I love this location, right off of LSU's campus, making it easy to walk to or there's a parking lot in the back. The place is large and they opened up the rooftop in the last few years so there is usually seating available. The food typically comes out fairly quickly, but it can get very busy so a little patience is needed at times. As for the food, this is a classic Cajun spot. Come get alligator bites, boudin balls, catfish, poboys, red beans and rice, jambalaya, etc. You name it, and they probably have it. The food is always good and the portions are large. read more

The food was great! I've been twice in a weeks time lol. I ordered the boat load seafood platter with catfish, shrimp, stuffed shrimp, a stuffed potato, Caesar salad, hush puppies, boudin egg rolls, and more! The service was a bit slow but the food made up for it. The vibe is casual to formal dining. Great for a business lunch stop or dinner. Wouldn't recommend for quick lunch breaks, may be best to order to go/online. read more

Rudest staff. Greeters incompetent. Acting like they have a 20 minute wait when the restaurant is empty on a week night. Consistently.

Let me start by saying that I came to this establishment around 9pm for a late dinner after work. I checked the reviews before I arrived but was a bit disappointed as it did not live up to the ratings. The Food was good, not great. The service was awful honestly. keep in mind this restaurant is on a college campus so expect a kids serving you in tank tops and boy shorts. The spinach dip itself was good but the bow tie pasta "chips" were sad and couldn't hold the dip. read more

My friend recommended this restaurant while I was in Baton Rouge we took a Lyft from the Hilton downtown for about $12. It was a great decision to get out of downtown and see the LSU district. Scotty was our server and he was absolutely wonderful! "I've got you" was his famous saying and he certainly did! He had the best smile and giggle! They had many beers on tap and happy to let you taste a few! They had the best crab and Brie soup I've never had anything like it! We tried the Boulin Balls, very interesting sausage and rice with a little kick! We split the Chicken Fried Steak which came with MAC & Cheese and a side garden salad! The entree was $13 and huge portions. It was a steal! The whole bill with a couple beers $38. What a great rooftop and awesome staff looking after you! Highly recommend this place and you know why.... they've been in business since the 80's and they rock!!! read more

Had a great experience at The Chimes Restaurant. The food here is seriously outstanding. I've tried a wide range of things on the menu, and honestly, everything has been consistently amazing. You really can't go wrong no matter what you order. One of the highlights has to be the platters - huge portions and packed with variety (see photo). Definitely come hungry. The atmosphere is also a big part of what makes this place special. It has that classic student energy being so close to LSU - lively, fun, and always buzzing. Just keep in mind that it can get pretty busy because of that, especially during peak times. Overall, this is one of those places that just delivers every time: great food, great portions, and a great vibe. read more

Meal: 1) salmon sandwich w/t chicken/sausage jambalaya, 2) fried catfish po-boy, red beans & rice w/t sausage, fries PROS: all of the food listed above tasted good, not outrageously good, but... just good. I would get it all again. Portion sizes & price, acceptable. Wait service, very good. CONS: the host girl sat us on the bar side, by ourselves. It was kinda early so we thought... just empty. After eating I walked to the other side of the restaurant which was 60% full. We were perplexed. Bottom line... we did not like that at all! read more

The Chimes was always one my favorite restaurants to frequent while attending LSU in the 1990s. It has gone through quite a few changes over the years, including a major expansion. The look and feel is like I remember. Cozy, yet room for an astounding amount of LSU revelers. A "Cheers" atmosphere. It has been quite awhile since eating here, and I was happy to see that much of what I remember and loved still remains including their menu items. Today, I ordered a Fried Shrimp Poboy and it must've been good or I was really hungry, because I wolfed it right down. Another favorite of mine has always been the Fried Alligator appetizer. It's almost a meal in itself (if you don't share). My server couldn't have been better. Friendly, attentive, and never left me wanting or waiting. read more

Great service, great atmosphere, and even better food. I ordered the boudin balls, and they came hot and tasty with a sauce that reminded me of a very subtle hot mustard or horseradish based sauce. Delicious. I then ordered the New Orleans BBQ shrimp PO-Boy and it was delicious. Very generous with the shrimp and good sizing of the sandwich as well as portion of the fries. Large selection of beer as well. Highly recommend to stop by! read more

Great location near LSU. Huge menu with surprisingly really good food despite it also being a great sports bar venue. Lots of big screen TVs to catch national games. It's fairly noisy, but that's too be expected given the target audience. We had boudin balls with a white sauce that had a kick of horseradish. They were yummy. Also tried crawfish and Jack cheese-topped French fries fries. That was a unique flavor twist with the potatoes. The seafood lasagna was fantastic. Large portion stuffed with shrimp, crawfish, and crab with a delicious cream sauce. Very heavy, so watch your appetizer orders! Highly recommend if you are coming to campus. Non memorable, just a spot to dine at while we were in town. I ordered the fettucine alfredo and have made better. I had to request a slice of bread to go with the meal because it didn't come with one and was charged for it. I thought that was weird since all pics online had the bread on the plate and mine looked naked. Service was awful. Our server spent most of her time talking to the table next to us, either they were friends of hers or she was hoping to make new ones. We constantly had to wait for her to come around and when she did, she would tend to the other table, making me wonder if I should use my invisibility to fight crime or.... We ordered the spinach dip which was the better choice of our meal. The chips were almost too spicy for me, but my husband really enjoyed it. Dine or Dash? I think I'll use my invisibility for good and dash onto the next place and give them a try. read more

Chimes is my favorite seafood restaurant in Baton Rouge. The menu features all types of seafood prepared in different ways. The menu also features other food options. I highly recommend the spinach and artichoke dip. Instead of chips, the dish comes with fried bow tie pasta. I personally ate the bow tie pasta alone because it was that great. I placed a takeout order this morning and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I arrived after 30 minutes and still had to wait another 20. I understand it was a busy time due to multiple events in the area, but the bigger issue was the lack of customer service. My order sat on the counter for about 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged it, which already showed a lack of urgency. When I finally got home, I realized my order was incomplete. I ordered the chicken and biscuits brunch, but only received the biscuits with a poached egg that doesn't even go with this item on the menu. Definitely not worth the $15 I paid for. The food here is always good, but this visit was disappointing enough that I'll be thinking twice before ordering takeout from here again. read more
