I was looking for an optometrist in Downey. Walked in to check my insurance coverage, and they were able to fit me in right away. Very helpful staff and the experience was pretty simple. My insurance covered most of it and had little out of pocket for my glasses. Definitely recommend. read more

I have been going here for over 30 years. All of the Doctors and staff have always been very helpful and courteous throughout the years. The have a great selection of modern, awesome lens and sunglasses and their office is super clean. I moved 65 miles away a few years ago and I still make the drive for me and my kids. The Dr was friendly and helpful, the staff at the desk were not very friendly or helpful. I chose the glasses went through the steps and asked for a copy of my prescription. I noticed the attitude change when I asked for my prescription and when I asked for the PD to be added to it the person helping me said that was an extra $25. I'm not understanding how or why that would need to be charged as extra when I just paid for the service. I thought maybe I'm just exaggerating and I should voice my concern, but I chose not to because there were other people there and I simply didn't want to make it an issue. I have never had this issue anywhere else, I have 3 kids who all wear glasses as well and not once did this happen. It really changed this whole experience for me at this place. If I could put one star I would Bad costumer service. doctor Wong did my perception wrong had to go back and still can see out of my contacts. I ordered glasses which was a waist of money that I can't see out of also. The doctor is way to old to be doing this job he might want to reconsider retiring. First-time visiting this place. Gotta say, I really had a great experience. Greg, at the front desk was just a super cool dude. Friendly, knowledgeable, and super helpful. Dr. Huang operformed the eye exam. Super nice. And Natalie helped us with our frames and everything else. She was Amazing. Extremely helpful, answered ALL my questions. When I scheduled my last eye exam, I was told I had missed an appointment back in 2022 and had to pay a $25 fee. I wasn't even aware of this missed appointment, but I went ahead and paid the fee anyway. Fine, policy is policy. I was also told to arrive 30 minutes early, which I did. After my appointment, I bought premium frames and had them fill the prescription there. Of course, they tried to upsell every add-on imaginable--glare coating, transitions, you name it. I declined everything! Later, I returned to have an older frame filled with a progressive prescription, which cost me over $500 upfront. Then, when I called today to request my pupillary distance (a standard part of my medical records), I was told I'd have to pay another $25 fee. Seriously? This practice feels more like a cash grab than a place focused on patient care. After years of being a loyal customer, I expected better. I'm beyond disappointed and will be finding a new eye doctor who values transparency and customer service. Avoid this place unless you want to be nickel-and-dimed for everything. In California, your pupillary distance (PD) is generally considered part of your medical record. Under California Health & Safety Code §123100 et seq., patients have the right to access their medical records, which include information related to their health history, diagnosis, or condition, or relating to treatment provided or proposed to be provided. Healthcare providers are permitted to charge a reasonable fee for copying medical records, not exceeding 25 cents per page, or 50 cents per page for records copied from microfilm, along with reasonable clerical costs.However, charging a flat fee of $25 specifically for the release of your PD may not align with these provisions. I highly recommend this place Natalie is honest and she always helps my family and I with insurance and the facility is on time but once I was late she was able to fit me in later in the day. And honestly people only put bad reviews when half the time they are in fault. I have been going to this same doctor for 4 years now. I went in today for my yearly appointment. I was told by Natalie (front desk) that a new state law had taken place and anyone over 65 HAS to have pictures of their retina taken. They could do it there and the cost is $39 which my insurance would not pay. Or I could go to a specialist, have my retina pictured, return for an eye exam with them and my insurance would pay the specialist. I left, came home, called my insurance company and was told that yes it is a law in some states but NOT in California (which is where I am). I called Downey Eyecare and Natalie would not take my call. I was told by the girl I was speaking to it was a policy of theirs. Natalie said it was a law. The way I see it is they are ripping off Senior Citizens who live on a set income! Shame on them. SENIORS BEWARE!!!!! read more

I had been coming to Downey eye care for a couple of years and then was told Norman Wong was retiring so we tried Lenscrafters. After Lencrafters did not change out my old lenses prescription to the new ones that they said they did, I was so upset I did not go back and decided to come back to Downey Eye Care and low and behold Dr. Norman Wong was still there and did a fantastic job. He is so thorough and is very experienced and such a pleasant person. My issue was with the front desk person named Natalie, very rude and not wanting to be helpful at all. Natalie was rude from the moment of check in. If she didn't want to be at work or doesn't like dealing with the public, maybe Natalie should think about employment elsewhere. I asked the doctor if my old pair of glasses could be checked on the strength to see how they had changed to the new prescription he prescribed and he said to ask Natalie. When I went to the front desk to ask Natalie, Natalie told me if I didn't buy them there then she couldn't check them. Well guess what-You just lost a customer who was going to buy 2 pairs of glasses. I was also going to make an appointment for my husband as he needs 3 pairs of glasses. I had every intention of buying one pair for reading and one for computer work. Because of Natalie I will not be returning to this location. Its unfortunate that a rude front desk person can make or break your business. Downey Eye Care should really consider all the negative reviews on Natalie and make a change or send her to training on people skills!!!! read more

Made an appointment to get my eyes checked and the staff was very nice and set me up with an appointment. This is the first time coming to this office so I wasn't sure what to expect. Was greeted promptly at 9am. The staff was very personable and friendly. They instantly made me feel at ease. I was taken back to and then sent in to see the doctor. Dr. Wong was very knowledgeable and friendly. He was informative and kind when doing my exam. I then went out to pick some frames and they have a large selection to choose from. Finally picked some out and hope to have them in a few weeks. read more

This doctor was great! He really did a thorough check. My last eye doctor was not as thorough , I was really impressed and definitely recommend this place. There was no wait, I went in with an appt , sat down for like 2 min if that. The facility is well maintained, the staff is all professional and courteous. Super annoying! I've been a client of Downey eye care since 2015!!! And called today prior to arriving to ask if they can get me a trial for daily disposable contacts and they said yes and would set them aside for me. I drove one hour to get there before they closed just so that they can tell me that they all of a sudden can't give me a trial! Aside it being a complete waste of time, and LUCY giving false information and being negligent when I arrived - the manager also did nothing to remedy the issue! Only if I ordered $400 worth or contacts would she be able to give me a trial pair. ridiculous! Safe to say they lost a long time client! read more

Dr. Stein was awesome! Very informative, showed me diagrams and explained everything he was doing and looking for. Which is greatly appreciated! The ladies upfront who take care of you are very friendly as well. The only reason I am leaving 4 stars is because of the price. They are a bit on the pricey side... They were not covered under my insurance :( But needed new glasses BAD! Was able to get a same day appt which was a HUGE plus!! So i had to pay out of pocket.. Almost $100 for the appointment and about $350+ for frames and lenses. (I didnt pick cheap ones hehe) But the appt alone was expensive. Awesome and wide selection of frames. *Most of the frames are $200+ Unfortunately I probably wont come back because they dont take my insurance :( But I definitely recommend! read more

When my husband is happy with something, then I'm happy. Such is the case for our experiences thus far with the Downey Eyecare Center in Downey. While I personally currently do not have any use for eye care, my husband has for as long as I've known him (13 years now). During all of those years, I've never once heard him say much of anything nice until after his first appointment at the Center. He made several positive remarks, actually. Dr. Wong took great care of my husband as did the staff. AND they sell contacts for a much more reasonable price than what my husband had been paying for online since other offices wanted an arm and a leg for theirs. The entrance into the parking lot is weird. The parking lot itself is kind of crammed & is located behind the building, shared with a hair salon. Their staff was really nice when I called to schedule my husband's appointment. They make reminder calls for appointments the day beforehand. I called on a Tuesday and they got him in that Thursday. They are open a little longer on Tuesday & Thursday - until 8 p.m. They even have Saturday hours. I like that this is a family practice in the heart of Downey. DR Stein and Dr Wong are amazing. Today Dr Stein assisted me he is one of the best optometrist I've ever had. Always gets my prescription 100% correct. Natalie and other staff are awesome. THey are personable, knowledgeable and professional. Ive worked in the service industry for 20 years and I am rarely impressed however each year when I come for my vision check up im always impressed with their continued customer service, they are always there for any questions my family and I have. The staff enforced COVID Regulations by sanitizing all glass frames which makes it comfortable to pick and choose glasses. Came here to look at sunglasses because my insurance covers them because I got lasik. The employee straight out lied to me and said my insurance doesn't cover Oakley and Ray Ban. I told her that the other optometrist didn't restrict me. She rudely told me to go back to the other store and buy them over there. I called my insurance and they said there is no restriction on what brand I can pick from. No one likes a liar! read more

The issue for my two stars is the lead time for my prescription glasses to be ready. I was informed it would take between 2 and 3 weeks for my prescription glasses to be ready, however it is now the third week and I decided to follow up with a phone call and I was told that my glasses weren't ready. No explanation as to why they are not ready nor was I informed ahead of time that glasses weren't going to be ready. This to me is very unacceptable, I was told they would follow up and get back to me. For someone who relies on prescription glasses it is of utmost importance for me to have the latest prescription glasses. read more

Our family has been going to Dr. Stein's office for many many years. In fact, I first went to his office in Bellflower (before it closed). My parents actually saw Dr. Stein's dad before he retired. Since Dr. Stein only has office hours on Wednesdays, we've since seen Dr. Wong and Dr. Choi. All 3 doctors are super nice, attentive and knowledgable so I really don't mind going to either three. The support staff are also great. They are always nice, patient, and helpful. Not that others are equally great but Natalie is by far our favorite! Highly recommend Downy Eye Care Center!! read more

Dr. Wong is always so informative and explains everything about your eyes. The staff is always friendly, I just went a few days ago and the precautions that they're taking due to COVID-19 are exemplary. They take your temperature at the door they have sanitizer every where and if you're looking at glasses, they make sure that you put whatever ones you tried on in a basket, so that they can sterilize them properly. I felt so safe for myself and my son it was a wonderful experience I will go nowhere else. They always explain everything regarding your insurance what is covered, what isn't covered and what will be out of pocket, you can't get no better than this. I definitely recommend. read more

This was my first encounter with this office aside from making the appt initially- If there was a way to leave no star at all- I would do that. I was trying to confirm my appt for today & after being put on hold for a ridiculous amount of time, being hung up on and dealing with the most unprofessional reception staff (Valerie) I decided this isn't the place for me- all this drama, unorganized unprofessionalism before I even made it to the office made it very clear to me that this was not the place for me- Even after speaking to their unhelpful "Office manager".
