History of Doug's Place
Odis B.

This was my first visit to Doug's Place and words cannot express how the crew made you feel when walked in the door: warm and loving. The food tastes as if mom just made it in the kitchen and our server was fabulous: with excellent knowledge of the food. We will be back!

I've been to Doug's place twice and enjoyed my experience both times. First off the service is excellent. Incredibly friendly and fun. Orders are taken promptly and there is always someone walking around to refill tea and/or water. The food is delicious. Homemade southern comfort food at its finest. The friend chicken is it excellent. Super crispy and juicy on the inside. Great biscuits, too! I had a burger my second trip and it was okay. I've definitely had better but it was good quality meat and the toppings were very fresh. Sweet tea is SWEET SWEET tea. I'm new to the south so I'm not sure if this is normal or if there's is on the extra sweet side. It's really good but I suggest mixing the sweet with the unsweetened. There is a gorgeous new addition with a lovely dining area. Lots of small town feel to it. The original dining space is small but cozy and feels very local. Overall I would recommend and will definitely be back again.

Western omelet with hash browns and biscuit

Sometimes you have to veer off the highway to get some good breakfast! I'm so glad I did. Doug's place was cute and seemed to have been recently upgraded. Still had the great country farmhouse interior and the bathroom was very nice! I ordered the western omelet which was loaded with a ton of peppers, onions and ham. The biscuit was fresh and tasted like a country biscuit should. Our server was sweet and food arrived fast.

Green beans, sliced tomatoes, macaroni and cheese with Texas toast.

This local hub of country cooking is where the elite eat. Multimillion-dollar deals have been hashed out here (LakePoint, maybe Amazon centers and more) over biscuits and gravy or meat-and-threes. @Marksullins upped the ante when he bought the Emerson landmark and it shows (expansions and updates). Our first visit was way overdue but it was a perfect 'tween holidays stop. Food. Fried chicken livers, turnip greens and pintos beans with corn bread. Plate no. 2: Green beans, sliced tomatoes, macaroni and cheese with Texas toast. We needed something healthy after all the Christmas dining. All was good but livers could have been a bit warmer. Star of the show: the greens. Atmosphere: perfect. Embraces local history and culture amid perfect updates. That is why, even at 3:30 p.m. on a drizzly Friday, the place was filled with families and couples. Service: Good. Could be a bit more attentive (water refills). Cost: great. Two meals and tip, $26. Bottom line: glad to dine local. We'll be back to try breakfast soon.

I came here with a large group and they were so good to us! We had all placed our orders in advance so they could work on prepping ahead of time. I got the pork loins with rice and gravy with macaroni and cheese and fried potato wedges. I did have a bit of an issue with getting a drink at the beginning- I ordered a coke but the mix tasted off to me so I tried a Dr. Pepper and had the same issue. I eventually settled on an unsweetened tea. However, the waitstaff was very attentive so this was resolved quickly. The food also came out very quickly. It was no sooner than we had sat down that they were already bringing out the first plates. I believe our group was at least 30 people and they were so speedy with the service. Especially since we had a specific time slot and we ended up coming early. I think my favorite part of my meal was the fried potato wedges. My pork loins were very succulent and juicy. The rice was a bit on the mushy side for me so I didn't eat too much of it. And then we finished up with a banana pudding. The portion they gave you was so much! And it was so good. We had an amazing experience and would definitely come back in the future!

Smoked pork plate. Mac, collards, chicken n dumplings, cornbread

A classic!! No place like Doug's. The recent renovation have brought the place up to date but the food is still as good as it was 20 years ago. Smoked pork was flavorful and moist, Mac and cheese was creamy, collards were nice and tender. Cornbread was a little dry and server didn't really check on us after we got our food. Still a great meal!

Fried chicken livers, collard greens, and pinto beans with a biscuit

The food was amazing, you have to have one of their biscuits. The people are welcoming, and we had great service on top of that. There can be a wait during peak hours, but they offer an air conditioning waiting area. It's a good size restaurant so you don't have to wait very long. I had the fried chicken livers with collard greens and pinto beans and my sister had the fried chicken on the same sides. The biscuits are absolutely amazing, but they also offer cornbread. Breakfast lunch and dinner is served. You can't go wrong with Doug's place.

Roast beef, mac and cheese, mash potatoes and corn bread! Supper delicious

We were surprised that this place was, overall, over the top. We immediately felt at home. The people were welcoming and friendly, and we didn't have to wait long for our food. The food was super delicious; it tasted so good that I felt like my grandma was in the kitchen cooking. We strongly recommend this place for some of the best Southern food. The atmosphere was cozy and nice.

Cinnamon roll

We absolutely love Doug's Place! The food and service never disappoint. We ordered a bacon breakfast plate and a country ham breakfast plate. The food was prepared fresh to order and served piping hot. We ordered a cinnamon roll to go so don't miss out on that! Our waitress brought it to our table before our food arrived because she didn't want us to miss it in case they ran out. How sweet is that! They only make them on weekends. If you're going down I-75 and are near exit 283 you gotta stop. They also have a fabulous lunch menu with meat and veggies.

Don't eat there if you want to eat alone. Apparently you have to be in groups of two or more to be seated.

The remodeled dining is a big upgrade. Service can be slow because they get busy. But they are busy because of repeat business.

Not in the staff but there are some minor interior issues which could be addressed. As the dining area and service areas are open plan you can easily see the duct tape doors to the dishwashers area is in dire need of repair versus patching. Also it is rather filthy along the edges. The wall a/c unit also needs to be completely cleaned as it appears to have some grime building up. Now for the biggest disappointment ... our food. Coffee - yummy Country fried steak biscuit..... yea nope not again. It's just like it says just a huge very thin slice of commercial packaged frozen patty of country fried steak laid across an open faced biscuit. I had a side of fresh fruit. But it was mostly out of season fruit so not sweet and still underripe. Biscuit was light and fluffy but I had to order a piece of cheese and some gravy to hide the flavor of the meat and coating. Chicken and waffles - husband's favorite here but today it wasn't the same at all. Chicken was super dry inside. Waffles he described as no different than ones he makes at the hotel lobby. All in all we will wait some before returning to try again at some point. Thank you to the wait staff for always having smiles and helping each other to keep us happy.

It was a Saturday night but we were a little on the earlier side for dinner so the wait was less than 30 minutes. WELL worth the wait! The atmosphere is fun and casual. Many people were celebrating birthdays with large parties. We ordered the seafood fondeaux based on my friend's recommendation and it was excellent. I ate way too much for sure but it was hard to stop! I ordered the Chicken Ooh La La with angel hair pasta and added on a side salad. I tried the ginger citrus (house) dressing and wasn't sure what to expect but I was very pleased. Not overpowering ... perfect mix of ginger and citrus. The Chicken Ooh La La was excellent as well and needless to say I took most of it with me. My husband ordered the Poo Boy (half portion) with fries. He said it was excellent as well and the half portion was just enough. Service was excellent as well. The young lady that waited on us was super friendly and accommodating. This would be a perfect place for larger groups such as family get togethers, celebrations, while still seating couples and others. And the portions versus the price point seemed very reasonable to me. They boast a Southern Coastal Cuisine so I went with the Fried Flounder Sandwich dressed in southern slaw and a side of tartar sauce. Served on a Niedlov's (Bakery in Chattanooga) grilled artisan hoagie bun. It was delicious. Crunchy crust and a tender moist fillet on the inside. And that Creamy Dreamy slaw was amazing. Their Fried Chicken Tacos is a must try too. Three hot chicken tenders in four tortillas, topped with corn salsa, cojita cheese, and jalapeño lime ranch. It was an Oh My Gosh experience. They have a very nice outside covered patio that's pet friendly and it all sits on a very large parcel with nice greenery and impressive landscaping. And it looks like they do a very brisk take out business too as I seen many orders being picked up. Awesome cocktails, attentive and responsive service all at a fair price. Definitely a place you want to check out.

If you look at my profile, finding a small town diner is one of my tihngs. I love getting a meal at a local spot. Don't do chain restaurants much. This one is a small diner. It fits the old 40s style, where the staff is in the middle, seats on the outside, counter service only. It is difficult getting around if someone is seated. That is how small it is. And, oh, by the way, they have been here since 1945, so most likely most of the stuff here is original. Almost everything is adorned with local ads. The menu has them on both covers, as well as along side the menu items. The coffee cup has them as well. As the staff is behind the counter and unencumbered, I think it would be hard to have really bad service here. Place was about half full, but the staff was on top of things. Food? It is basic diner food. I disagree with the negative reviews, but right down the middle makes sense. Everything is cooked to order. Biscuits and gravy were made with sausage gravy. The eggs were cooked a bit harder than I like, but not way overdone. Sausage nicely browned. Grits were done soft, but with just a bit of a bite. All in all, a no frills breakfast. While this was nothing to write home about, there is something nostalgic about grabbing a bite in a place that has been opened since 1945 and still has that historic vibe. We are losign this in America, as chains are taking over every place. Eat local y'all.
