The menu changes daily, but seems to rotate around good-old home style dinners. We each got a meat plus three and it was all very good, well-seasoned and served super fast. Prices are very, very reasonable! $18.92 including $3 tip for two large meals. It's just a little way past all of the fast-food joints, and I don't think you can beat the prices for their hamburgers/BLTs. Everyone was friendly (and we were obviously tourists - wearing out of state football shirts). This is a hard review to write as I had a Jekyll-Hyde experience within a week. My first ever visit was late afternoon and I sat inside. The service was phenomenal and the food was excellent - so good that I added a to go plate after eating my meal. Best ever. I was eager to go back and later the same week I ordered online and picked up in the drive drive thruthru. Got there and some items ordered were not available - no problem. Friendly service recommended substitutes. Got home and the two plates were almost inedible. The country fried steak was without bottom breading, tasted burnt and was so solid could not be cut or chewed. Okra - got two and a half (cup half full) servings all burnt - actually some pieces solid black all the way through -and strangely, I had not ordered a third okra. A couple of items were missing - veggies off the veg plate. Tried to call but no answer. I am 25 minutes away so not worth it to go back. Weirdest experience. If this had been my first time I would never return. I cannot fathom the difference in quality control - deliberately serving obviously bad food in the drive thru. Comfort food to the fullest. This place is your standard meat and three. I was here with some family and we were told we had to come here for dinner. It was a good place to get your fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and mac-n-cheese fix. The waitress was nice enough, but not super attentive. The tables were clean-ish. Basically what you'd expect from a diner... everything covered in grease and slightly sticky. Tip: The peach cobbler with ice cream is a must. This is a great little place. Drove up from the city and started my day here last weekend (4/1/17) before exploring North Georgia (Etowah Mounds and Tellus museum - very easy to get to both from here, by the way). Doug's is definitely a "locals" place and it was packed already in the first hour of opening. The place is bigger than it looks when you first walk in though: there's a whole other room to the side. The ambiance is no-nonsense, decoration local and minimal, and I noticed whimsically that none of the plates or coffee mugs on any of the tables matched. All of this combined for the charming country feel this city girl was hoping for. I'm sorry I didn't catch our server's name as she was incredibly sweet too. So I had breakfast. A nice, simple, 2-eggs, hash browns, city ham, grits and toast breakfast. It's hard to mess that up. They didn't. Everything was really good and tasty. And affordable. Throw in an endless cup of coffee and my meal was still only $10. I ate every last bit. Are you looking for an award-winning breakfast experience? Please. Gimme a break. We heard about Doug's from a friend, and we're so glad we found it! For dinner, it's a meat and sides kind of place, but everything we've ordered has been good. The fried catfish was crispy and delicious, and the sides are so good. Definitely try the creamed corn. Everything is home made, and the waitstaff is excellent. We go often for breakfast as well. On Sat and Sun they have fresh cinnamon rolls. The prices are also great too. So make sure to give Doug's a try. read more

Doug;s place has been around for a long time and the building shows it's age. The parking lot has large potholes and some is still gravel. BUT this is the kind of place you want to come to get good old southern food. I personally like breakfast best. Good biscuits and southern gravy. Egg plate cooked how you want them and how many you want. Breakfast potatoes strong coffee it;s all good. I have also had there lunch / dinner chicken livers and the are good and it is hard to find a place that still has them daily. Burgers , meat and 3's are all good solid choices to. Jump off the Interstate 75 at Emerson and drop in. About a mile off on GA 293. BTW if you love American Pickers TV show you wil feel like you are sitting in one of their picking places. read more

Our first time here, Saturday at lunch. The restaurant was 80% full. The outside looks small-town nice, parking was unmarked so cars were parked haphazardly. We were greeted pleasantly, found our own seats. The waitress was cheerful, helpful. Menu is limited and requires some deciphering. We all ordered the 'plate', meat with various sides. Our lunches arrived to mixed reviews. The meats were all very good, but don't choose mashed potatoes or fried anything. More batter than green tomatoes or mushrooms. Peach cobbler was great. One of the finest vegetable plates in one of the most memorable locations I've ever had the privilege to consume. I had sampled catering from Doug's Place several years ago that was so good, I immediately bookmarked the spot on yelp with the intentions to try them out in person. As the saying goes, better late than never, because this spot is good. It reminds me in many ways of Carvers Country Kitchen, the now sadly closed Southern cooking meat and three that used to be on Marietta Street in Atlanta. The portions are a touch smaller than Carvers, which is not to say they are small portions, but just that you won't be feeding a family of four from them for two days. The gravel parking lot is pot hole filled and the building itself looks like it might just fall down around you while you're eating. Thankfully, today it held together for us to eat one of the most delicious Soul food lunches I've had in some time. You sit where you like, peruse one of the daily menus at the table, place your order and are served by a waitress, and pay at the counter as you leave. Though I've stolen bites of the entree items here, the sides are the way to go. Even better, a three veggie + bread plate will only set you back $5 including tax. Every menu item I've sampled, I would happily order again. They are: Squash Casserole: Approximately equal parts cheese, ritz cracker crumbs, and squash, it still manages to be incredibly light and fluffy. I love squash casserole, and this is my new favorite version. Sweet Potato Souffle: More casserole than souffle-like with a brown sugar topping, this version is not overly sweet like many Southern places, so you can actually taste the sweet potato. Solid. Fresh Collards: you can tell these are FRESH. Perfectly salted, not overcooked but cooked through, some of the best I've had. Parmesan Fried Squash: Long, thin slices of yellow summer squash lightly breaded in a parmesan crust. Yum. Fried Okra: I love fried okra. It is possible my favorite Southern side dish. It is incredibly rare to find a place that actually hand breads their okra these days; most places get it frozen and pre-breaded. Not here- the same delicious breading on their other goods is used on these delicious okra slices. Cornbread: Obviously homemade white cornmeal bread. Goes perfectly with the collards. Overall, Doug's place is a legitimate hole-in-the-wall gem. It's not fine dining by any means, but for what it is, it is as good as it gets. read more

It may not look like much from the outside, but the best food places I've found look like the beginning set of a Lifetime movie. $8 for a meat and 2 veg and the house wine of the south, sweet tea, is like a dessert. I recommend the chicken fried steak and the greens. This place is packed for dinner, swamped for breakfast and barren at lunch. We were in the area and Yelped a place for breakfast. We went to Doug's, not knowing what to expect but the 4+ star rating is right on. This is definitely a local diner. The portions were large and the food was good, and service was surprisingly good. Our food came out quickly. The place could have been cleaner but you have remember where you are. Outstanding! I don't know where to start. The meats & vegetables are prepared in the classic Southern way. The cornbread & biscuits are just right. The prices are quite reasonable. The lunch & dinner fare is quite worth the drive from Dallas, GA. But wait, there's more! Breakfast at Doug's Place is terrific! We are here for a volleyball tournament and wanted a non chain local type of restaurant for lunch. This is your typical meat and three and the prices were very reasonable. For the same amount that you'd spend on fast food, you could easily get a home cooked meal instead. I really enjoyed the stuffed bell peppers, Mac and cheese, and the fried green tomatoes.
