Well... tonight we gave Dougs another chance after our last experience was not good. I'm sorry to report that this time it was even worse. My wife got chicken tenders that were hard as hockey pucks, and I had the chicken which was very dry, and rubber like. The reason I went was for the chicken, but not anymore. Service was below average. Sorry to say after all of the years of enjoying the meals at Dougs, we will not be returning anytime soon, if at all. Very sad indeed! Great fried chicken, okra, creamed corn (and I'm not even a fan of creamed corn!) !! Add on some chocolate pudding, coconut cream pie and bread pudding, sweet tea or 1/2 and 1/2 ... You'll be all set plus need a nap afterwards :-) We were a big group, honest I didn't eat all the desserts myself. Bear in mind this is a real downhome place, been around since 19?? so not much to look at, not a date place, depending on your gal. Returned for breakfast, biggest decision: Country or City Ham?! I aint gonna lie it is a small town local place with repeat customers day after day but there is none of the racist crap going on here People are posting about. This spot had great fried chicken and the biscuit honestly was amazing. However the fried okra was a little squishy and the mashed potatoes barely had flavor. Since it's seat yourself, it's a gamble on whether you'll be social distanced especially if it's a busy day. If you're spooked about Covid don't go on a busy day read more

I recently ate at Doug's Place and the food was ok but what really got me was I was charged a fee for using my credit card to pay my bill. I said to cashier, "gee I wish I'd known about this fee & I would have paid cash." NO COMMENT from the cashier!!!! I feel I should have known about this fee so I could have decided how to pay! read more

Good local place for breakfast with lots of character. There was plenty of parking, though it was filling up already as we arrived about 9:00 am on a Saturday. There was a bit of a line forming when we left, though. The menu for breakfast was straightforward southern food with eggs, pancakes, biscuits etc. the service was attentive and friendly. Food was good and everything came as expected and cooked well. We had pancakes and two eggs with bacon. Two good sized pancakes were cooked just right and the egg just as I ordered (over easy). Nothing fancy but good food casual atmosphere with good prices. Would definitely come here again. read more

EXCELLENT service! Due to mistake on Yelp, we thought they were open until 7 on Sundays. (They close at 3!). We brought a BASEBALL TEAM and their families in to eat at 2:55! We felt terrible but the staff was amazing. They kept the grill open, took great care of us, and gave us amazing service. I had the beef tips, fried okra, sliced tomatoes, and sweet potatoes. It was all delicious with perfect sized portions and light breading on the fried okra. I will definitely be back! read more

Dougs is an Emerson staple. It pretty much is Emerson. Stop by and get a biscuit on your way to fish at the river, or stop off from 75 it's not far. I like the chili dogs, chicken and dumplings, French fries, and a banana pudding to go which you'll "try just a taste of" then eat the whole thing in the parking lot. We love this place. This is a very down to earth country food kind of place. Don't expect fine dining or expensive decor or catering to attitude. Its just hardworking people wanting some home cooking without being overcharged and trusting what is served them...AND NO TVS IN ANY ROOM. Recently I took my grand kids for dinner, they wanted the chicken tender meal. After paying, I noticed I was charged 50 cents for each meal. I requested why the additional charge because it was not posted on the menu. I ask to speak to the manager and was told that were not there. The cashier said we always add a additional charge for chicken tenders. With a confused look, I said what? She just shook her head and said she did not know why. How can a restaurant arbitrary add a surcharge without notifying the patrons on the menu? read more

Enjoyable country spot with reliable vegetable selection. Fairly priced snd great service. Occasionally has fresh produce as well.

First rate meat m three. Fried chicken, meatloaf and steak n gravy are crowd pleasers. Fried okra is magnificent light non greasy. Mac n cheese is loaded with yeller cheese and made by someone who's done made a lot of as they've got the recipe down. Bodacious chili dog with a fine simple chili that's never been to Texas and is palatable spicy without being fire extinguisher hot. Service is agreeable and friendly. They keep the place spic n span clean. If breakfast us anywhere near as good as lunch I'm gonna have to reset my alarm clock for earlier. Good groceries! read more

Forgot that I did not rate this location. This is a review from April of this year. Actually stopped on the way back from Red Top Mountain. We'd heard good things so wanted to give the location a try. And now we know that we never have to come back again. Yeah, the prices are certainly reasonable. But they're reasonable because the food is generally bland, greasy, flavorless and really just what you'd expect from a Sysco Truck. I've tried and I can't even think of one good thing to say. Decent sized portions but with as bad as the taste, I can't even see that as a benefit. The service was decent. It was certainly popular with the locals. I can't figure out why unless there are no other options in the area. read more

This is not a place for people of color... we walked into this place with our friends after hearing so many good things about their food. One Mexican family and one Indian family, we were led to sit at a booth where a huge Confederate flag hung over our heads. And one of the staff member thought it was very funny to tell us that it is the best seat in the house. The ceiling was leaking was water, and when I told the waitress, her response was, "I can't do anything about it, you can move the chair." There was no politeness in their behavior and conversations. I guess they showed their true colors too... will not be going back and will not be recommending this place to anybody. I would give this place negative stars if I had that choice. read more

I have always had wonderful experiences at Doug's Place. I am there at least 3 times a week. Having read the comments regarding the way that others have felt being persons of color (and know that I do not negate how you felt), that has not been my experience as a person of color myself. The staff as well as other customers have always been cordial. The waitresses have been most helpful as well. Finally, the food has been amazing. I not only recommend Doug's Place, but I put into practice what I preach by continuing to go there as my go to place for breakfast and lunch. read more

If you asked me a year ago how I felt about this place I would have given it 5 stars. However I've stopped going due to 2 separate incidents where my coworkers got really sick after eating here. One girl had to go to the ER. Food: The food here is southern comfort. I recommend ordering any of their plate combos. Avoid the grilled items....those will taste like school cafeteria food. All of their sides are pretty good as well as their meats.Taste wise, the food is overall consistently good.....just not consistently safe. Top it off with very affordable pricing, this is why this place is a hit. Service: As a minority this restaurant did came off very uncomfortable at first. However I have never experience any racism during the period that I dined here. The waitresses are very hospitable and friendly. Would love to eat here again but after seeing how sick my coworkers was, I am reluctant...so is everyone else in the office. read more

Really disappointed at the quality of the food. Last 3 visits we were served luke warm food, both meat and vegetables. One of us had Chopped Steak; mashed potatoes runny, gravy on steak and potatoes had a film that you could pick up with your fingers. Steak was ok but quite cool to the touch both finger and tongue. Another had Chicken Livers that had very little breading on them. These livers were COLD, unappetizing and unbearable. Asked for replacements and promptly received them. Both parties ordered fried squash, our favorite, and were sadly disappointed. It tasted as it was sitting under a heat lamp. Pinto beans were as excellent as they ever where. I really hate to write such a harsh review because DOUGS PLACE has been our favorite old dependable go-to place for quite a while but no longer can we continue to play hit or miss. Try them if you want to take a chance, just hope your visit is better than our last three. One more thing, they now have an up charge for using a credit card. This is hands down the best "country cooking" type restaurant I've ever been to. The rotating menu means you might not find what you ate last time, but you will find something excellent. We finally had to ask -- the meat loaf comes on Thursdays. Fried chicken is pretty much always an option. Burgers and fries are available, but please get yourself some quality vegetables. Collards and turnip greens are great but the sweet creamed corn is better than you've had before. If they have the banana pudding, get it. Price is under $9/plate for most meals. read more

The reviews so far are all correct. This place has inexpensive, good southern style food. In fact, I love the food at this place. BUT BE WARNED! I used to have a girlfriend who worked there for years and she frequently came home with tales of health inspection nightmares, and rodent and cockroach infestations! Then one day when I was eating there I looked over to the sugar dispenser that was left on the table with the salt and pepper and there was a trail of ants crawling up the side of it. I love a good hole in the wall or country restaurant and this is seriously the best of both worlds. My husband and I have been several times. We always have a place to sit without waiting more than a minute or two, but this place stay hoppin' busy. The service is quick and the meals are a decent mix and match of your favorite breakfast items. Everything is tasty and probably none of it super healthy since it's southern food. My husband prefers their pancakes combos with the spicy sausage and I like their biscuits with any of the southern smoked meats. This place is a hidden treasure! read more
