Came here after a meal~ We got a iced latte, Italian soda & shaved ice. The iced latte was perfect as it was a pretty sunny day in San Rafael. The passion fruit flavored shaved ice was good but a lot of the flavor went to the bottom so that was like flavor overload haha My husband wasn't a huge fan of the Italian soda, it was to sweet for him. Establishment is clean, there are little shops nearby, cafes, and parking is somewhat easy to find. On a summer weekday night located in a busier of area of San Rafael was filled with many young people. The cafe/ice cream shop connects to a next door market/art shop. There was a vintage/retro vibe, with red and white striped chairs and plaid-like tables. My friend and I shared a medium ice creams, with flavors butter pecan and mint chocolate chip. I wish they would've served a bit more for the scoops for the price we paid, but the ice cream was delicious nonetheless. The mint chocolate chip was tasty, and I wish that the butter pecan was slightly more rich. I would like to try their cappuccino chocolate ice cream flavor next time. read more

It took him 15-20 minutes to make 2 hot fudge sundaes, by the time he got to me, I didn't want to ask for anything outside of the standard milkshake for fear it would add another 15 minutes to my order. They offer online orders with DoorDash, but after putting in all of my info & order & payment details, it said they weren't accepting DoorDash. That was another 5-10 minutes wasted. We're visiting the area and wanted something sweet after dinner so came here after reading some reviews. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and helped right away. Very friendly employees. We got a couple tastes of flavors and made our choices. I got an ice cream cookie sandwich with strawberry ice cream. I was told the cookies were just made. For me, the ice cream was over the top sweet and didn't taste like strawberry. It was also super soft which meant one bite into the sandwich and it all came out. The chocolate chip cookie was ok - I gave Randy one of them and he loved it. I would have preferred a flat, thin cookie instead of a thicker, crispy cookie. Might have made eating the sandwich more doable. Maybe. Randy got a hot fudge sundae with ultra chocolate (his take: not very chocolatey) and coffee blast (doesn't taste like coffee at all). Cute shop and very friendly and helpful employees - and good cookie, per Randy - makes this three stars for us. LOVE all the rainbow gear and the support of the awesome lgbtq+ community but we won't go back. read more

Double Rainbow Cafe in downtown San Rafael isn't as shiny as it could be, but I'm giving it five stars nonetheless. In all the years we've visited, we've always received friendly service, their ice cream selection is top notch and the owner, Forest also happens to support California Coastal Clean-Up and other local causes. During our last visit, Andre (like the Giant, but smaller - his words, not mine) was minding the counter and while we were a little indecisive, I watched him step the guests in front of us through their choices. The woman ahead of us had chosen one of the oat milk flavors for a shake and he offered her a choice of non-dairy milks. They make our fashioned shakes with the tins and mixer. My son went with their peanut butter and jelly flavor, which features raspberry jam. The strawberry flavor was good, but not as standout as many of the others. Cappuccino Chocolate Crunch was Andre's current favorite and it didn't disappoint. Looking at the art on the walls, most of it seems to be from a Dominican College project a few years ago. While the menu is bright and colorful, the place has a hint of being more Velveteen Rabbit than Christmas Eve. There's a lot to be said for a local institution that's family-friendly, open until 10 pm most days with welcoming service and tasty ICE CREAM. I've honestly never explored the menu beyond the ice cream, but I love supporting local and supporting a local business that supports our local community feels even better. read more

My husband and I stopped by here on the way home from dropping our friends off at the airport. We were looking for a small cafe and saw this place on yelp with the good ratings and decided to give it a shot. We both had the Club sandwich, he had wheat and I had sourdough. He also got an espresso milkshake, and we got a banana split sundae. Yes, the Ice cream treats were pricey, but it was Soo delicious. The lunch was at a good price, and they were one of the best clubs we had ever had. I swear I had a foodgasm. It was Soo good, that my stomach was jealous the tongue got to try it first. LOL A week later we had to go back to pick them up and decided to try the place again, I like to say "Just to make sure it was as good as we thought it was" Well... It was!! I got the same thing but got the ultra-chocolate milkshake as my drink and he got the B.L.T. A with sprouts. Another thing I liked about the food was, if you order something with bacon, you can smell the bacon being cooked right then. The people were kind, and helpful and giving great customer service and I loved the little spaceship decorations they had hanging from the ceiling. They also have a funny rainbow poster, that we were getting a kick out of looking at while we waited. My only complaint was the bathroom, although it works, needs work. The toilet was loose and moves when you sit on it, and the graffiti on the walls and door, (maybe that is the decoration?) but it didn't look right and kind of set the mood different then how the rest of the place felt. Took the family to get ice cream here for a bit of nostalgia while visiting San Rafael as I lived here during college....walked in to an empty cafe with dirty dishes on a table and 2 sweet but chatting servers behind the counter....should have walked back out once we got a closer look at the cleanliness of the place...the floors were filthier than some gas stations I have been too...the soft serve machine was out of order and had a sign saying something about due the move the machine was not working...one of the cases was out of order and flavors were limited....the ice cream was fine, I got the soy mint chip (which was good), but my husband's cookie dough was melting but left there feeling sad and gross as the place was just really dirty. Not sure what is going on but it definitely needs a cleaning and refresh. read more

Upping my rating from several years ago. Now that Three Twins is gone, Double Rainbow has to be the best local ice cream in San Rafael. When we were there recently, the flavor selection was good, the servings were generous, the service was exceptionally good on a busy Friday night, the prices were reasonable, and--could it be?-- I think the frozen yogurt machine might have been working! Plus, a downtown location is always a plus, because it's always nice to take a stroll downtown. It was busy, but we still managed to get an outdoor table. read more
