Needed coffee to continue our trip back from Santa Rosa so here we go... nothing remarkable on the ordering process (this is drive through) and unfortunately they don't have rest room. We ordered funky monkey and boy does it tasted like burned, sandy peanut butter. This could possibly be the worst drink I've ever taste; banana flavor is nice but what kind of nasty peanut butter did they use? We love to visit these drive through coffee shops during any of our trips. This location has TONS of food and drink options. We almost ordered food but I'm glad we didn't based on our experience... We ordered an Oreo Latte and a Butterfinger Latte (both frozen drinks). Both tasted pretty good but $14 for both of these drinks is pretty expensive. The man who helped us was coughing a lot and making gross after taking our order and he wasn't wearing a mask... There are not many drive-thrus in Marin, so having Java Detour is a real treat. I love being able to quickly swing by without having to get kids into/out of their car seats! I love that Java Detour has so many options to order - from basic coffee to frozen coffee to frozen yogurt to pastries to other sweet treats and snacks. There is always a really good deal to be had, and thankfully, the wait is never very long. Try the Reeses's Mocha or the Funky Monkey! Over priced. They're literally selling the $1.50 COSTCO dogs for like triple the price. I was looking forward to a dog but got passed when I received it and seen that its the food court dog. Lost a longtime customer / family today, well done guys! Came for our monthly treat and since the smoothies kinda' aren't great (no fruit, more like a slushee) thought we'd try milkshakes... They've got a huge variety of options that aren't super straightforward (milkshakes,l vs "candy milkshakes" vs blended ice cream drinks vs frozen drinks, etc etc, on a confusing number of different signs... When the employee asked what we'd like I asked for the first milkshake of the 4 we were going to order and she said something about "ice cream" that I didn't quite understand. Said "I'm sorry, I don't understand... something about ice cream?" and she said "yeah... ice cream." Went back and forth trying to understand what she was saying, and she's repeating "milkshake with no ice cream" over and over like it makes all the sense in the world and doesn't bring in to question the very nature of what makes a milkshake a milkshake But language barriers are a thing and it's all good so I explained I was confused and drove around to the other window to see if the other employee might be able to make it make sense, and she ignored us... no other customers on either side, just me sitting there confused with confused kids until the other employee finally opened her window... rolling her eyes, huffing, actually whispering with the other employee and laughing at us like I'm some Uber Karen and my confusion was intended to make their lives difficult rather than just not understanding how to order a milkshake that's... just milk? Like how does that even work?? Idk, not getting the drinks was a bummer but getting treated like crap over it, too, was super lame... maybe I'm "that" lady but whatever, I'm sorry you hate your job so much that you treat every customer like they're a problem and an inconvenience. Warning: Highly recommended deliciousness! This is my go to for a rich candy crafted frappe. These Frappuccino's are out of this world. Everyone is different but I usually get the Butterfinger White Mocha Frappe. It will blow up the socks off any sweet frappe you have ever had. Highly recommend for one of those "cheat days" Anyways, I had to jump on here and write a stellar review because they also always have the sweetest ladies working there that have excellent customer service skills. Today I was hungry and decided to get something to eat also. I tried their PASTRAMI DOG! Holy cow. After a drive along the Coast from Jenner south to Olena and then east on Sir Francis Drake through the redwoods, we were ready for a cool drink. This cute little drive-thru is only a few blocks from the 101. Very convenient! Lots of unique flavors abound for blended mocha drinks, like German Chocolate Cake. Many candy bars are represented. Reese's, Butterfinger, and more. The beverages start to get pricey as you go up in size. Calories, too. We stuck with Mediums, which was fine to satisfy the cravings. The young lady at the window was very friendly and helpful. One downfall is how long it takes to get your order. Must be a brutal line in the mornings during commute time! I hadn't eaten all day I wanted something quick and needed something warm cause it was pouring and I figured I try Java Detour. I ordered a bagel and cream cheese but was informed they don't serve them after 1pm!!!! I've been here a few times in the past and it's nice that it's a drive through coffee establishment in San Rafael. Something we don't have many of in Marin. Anyway, I order a medium and a large iced Red Bull.. my total comes to $22 I look down at the menu I don't see pricing for the iced Red Bulls but I see pricing for the blended Red Bulls. $8 for a large. 6.50 or so for a medium. These are still very expensive for a cup of ice with Red Bull and a couple pumps of flavored syrup.. regardless, how did my total come to $22. I asked her to point me the pricing of the iced Red Bull on the menu and she couldn't find it. She gives me my reciept and it says $11.99 for a large iced Red Bull. I'm sorry but $12 for a Red Bull over ice is OUTRAGEOUS. It's almost a slap in the face because I can get a large red Bull for $3. I handed her back the large Red Bull drink and asked for a refund she gives me back exactly $12 and said she only works there and the price is out of her co trip. (I totally u defeat and that) but customer service could've been better and I didn't even get my tax back on that drink... so honestly myself and the few people I know that stop by there for coffee once in a while won't be going back due to this incident. read more

I mostly have good experiences with this coffee shop. I usually get the iced lavender latte, which I love. It's so delicious! I can't really speak to anything else because I don't usually deviate from my usual order. Sometimes the staff is... rude? I don't know if rude is the right word. Perhaps uncaring is more accurate. Yesterday I was second in line, so I took my waiting time to find something in my purse. One of the employees came out of the back door to take my order, but I couldn't hear him (if he did say anything). When I looked back up he was retreating to the door. He saw me and kind of shrugged like he was annoyed I didn't hear him. He stared for a second before he walked back over to me. I thought this was strange. I can't hear very well, so how was I to know he came out? What if I were a new customer and didn't know the staff sometimes come out the back door to take orders for the second and third car in line? The girl who took my card seemed to have some sort of issue (with me or what, I couldn't tell), so the guy who took my order handed out the drinks. I always come to java detour, I am a regular hiker and my coffee run is always done here. This morning before work I ordered a croissant, coffee, banana, and banana bread. As I was already at work I had my breakfast sandwich and noticed this weird taste of it. I didn't think anything of it because the bagel was toasted and blended with the actual mold that I later found. More than halfway through my sandwich the mold spots were clear. This is my go to drive thru coffee place in Marin. I generally drink black coffee (I need it in my veins!), and sometimes with a splash of milk. Most of the drinks are are sugary concoctions but they have decent choices. Recently I has a funky monkey, it tasted mostly of peanut butter than banana but it gets the job done. My lil sister likes the green tea latte since its tropical green tea. Most of the time I get a premium house coffee and it's good for my on the go taste. I like that they have breakfast sammishes all day (breakfast is great anytime of the day!), which makes it worth coming here. Service is generally pretty quick and the staff is friendly. One of these days I'll taste the Vietnamese coffee, I heard those are strong. read more

I'll be honest - I had no idea what to expect from a drive-thru coffee spot. But my Java Detour experience was actually pretty good. Don't get me wrong, this isn't artisanal coffee beans or anything like that. But I wound up getting a soy latte and a double espresso for $6, and they were perfectly decent. It wasn't like McDonald's or some other fast food joint - the Java was legit. My barista was super friendly, and it only took 5 minutes to get my beverages. My only complaint was that the ordering process was a bit confusing. I drove by one check-in window and nobody showed up. So then i had to drive to the other side, and finally someone opened up the window. I still love this place, as it's the only drive through coffee place near me that isn't a McD's or such. I like that their smallest drinks are the equivalent in size to the medium drinks at most places, and I like that they have a good variety of flavored drinks (my favorite these days is a small Butterfinger Mocha - blended, it tastes like marzipan). Prices are up there, but you get what you pay for, and I've never been dissatisfied with the quality. I haven't tried the pastries much, but it seems they have a good selection of items. I have tried the breakfast sandwiches, and they are big, and tasty. I'm not a fan of the double window drive up, because sometimes the second window is closed, meaning that when you might think you've avoided the long line spilling over onto Lindaro, you've in fact lost your place, and end up even further back. At the very least, they do come out and go from car to car when that happens (if they have enough staff). I do wish they had an app, a giftcard program with rewards, to give rewards to those who frequent the place regularly (like a free pastry or small drink every 10 purchases?). I also wish they had later hours - past 9 or so - they might be able to capitalize on the business since most coffee shops are closed by 9:30, and I usually get cravings for their drinks around 10 or 11pm. read more

Coffee was delicious but the people running the place this morning were far from satisfactory. I came here 2 times today. Arrived at 5:45am and waited til 6 to order the delicious chai. They opened a couple minutes late, no big deal. The girl was nice and pleasant. Came again at 10:15am and the line was long on either side. I watched a guy come from a building (restroom i assume) and walk straight into the hut with some kind of food item in his hand before walking out again and asking me 3 cars from the window "you ready to order" i was starting to let him know I couldn't see the menu when he closed the door on me. What a jackass. Next minute another guy walks out and asks me if im waiting on an order. I told him i couldnt see the menu and he says 1 second and walked to the cars after me. I wasnt upset that i couldnt order then as i hadnt expected it. The people here were just rude! When he was walking back towards the hut i broke down and ordered the only thing i could clearly see which was the caramel macc. Blended. Delicious. Except there was no whip cream! This would have been a 1 star review had it not been for the tasty chai from this morning and the pleasant not-rude girl earlier in the day. I come here often and because of the variety like to change up my order. I appreciate a tasty coffee but at some point you need to have some semblance of customer service! Came here a few mornings ago and man were they efficient. There was one car ahead of us at the window. Maritza popped out of the hut and took our order before we even got to the window. I'd say we placed a pretty complicated order of 6 drinks all with special modifications along with multiple sandwiches and she didn't even write anything down. I like this place, it's a nice and convenient spot to grab coffee and some sandwiches, all accessible via a drive-thru. My caramel macchiato today was amazing. My breakfast sandwich was just ok. They don't use sausage patties which makes the sandwich difficult to eat because the split links just slide around. This is, after all, a drive thru so I'm gonna scarf down this sandwich while I drive. The struggle is real. Also, the breakfast sandwich is dry. Needs small amount of mayo or cheese melted down more.
