I love small town coffee shops. And I love how on this small but thriving 'downtown' area of Fairfax, there are no chains, all quaint and quirky small businesses. I finally stopped in after many years of passing through this town. Super casual, I'd even say 'hippie' vibes. Seemed like more seating outside than inside, so not really a camper's spot. Lots of antique-y looking things inside and I wouldn't even doubt if this space was once a saloon. Looks like they still roast their own beans here, which is a unique draw. In one corner you can see this old mechanical contraption that screams the industrial age. No automatic digital readings here. It wasn't in operation the time I went, but I'd love to come back sometime when it is. Iced Coffee ($6ish/4*) Don't know what type of coffee they used but it was unique. It was both earthy with slight nuances of fruity. Lighter in body tho, as I usually prefer bolder and darker flavors in a cold coffee drink. Still not bad at all. Brownie ($5ish/2.5*) I got this to eat for a later time at a campsite, after dinner. I think I got it cuz it had walnuts, I love chocolate and nuts together. But this brownie was a let down chocolate wise. The lighter color kinda worried me at first and sure enough it just tasted like a brownie made with more brown sugar than chocolate. Also more dry and cake-y than it was gooey and moist. Upon paying I also noticed they had a ton of their coffee beans already packed in 1 pound bags laid out on their counter. I love grinding and brewing batches at home so I snagged a bag. Got a Bali Blue Moon ($21ish/5*) which I never had. And after several brews at home, I really like this bean and roast. I'd say this was medium dark in roast and has great coffee notes and structure. Next time I roll through town, I'm definitely gonna snag another coffee drink to try and another pound of coffee from another origin. Makes me stoked that I'm always gonna leave with a nice parting gift after a roadtrip. read more

First off the location is amazing! Right in adorable downtown Fairfax. We stopped here to grab a quick bite and coffee after backpacking in point Reyes. They toast their own coffee here so I was excited to try it! The inside is super cute and fun, with cute decor and fun murals on the walls. It gives it a very cool coffee shop vibe like before Starbucks took over. My coffee was pretty good. I ordered an iced vanilla latte with light vanilla. I couldn't really taste the vanilla or the espresso much, but it was refreshing. My friend got an iced vanilla latte with regular vanilla and I tried hers and could barely taste vanilla either. My husband got the iced chai latte with espresso added and his was delicious, not too sweet, but still spicy. We ordered bagels with egg and cheese, and although they were good, the servers were rude when we asked to have them cut in half to share. He seemed upset by the request, which is odd because most bagel sandwiches are cut in half so they are easier to eat. The rude server made the experience awkward, and the coffee wasn't good enough to make up for it. Cute shop though! read more

We got two iced lattes and they were yummy. My sister got a bagel with "everything" and it came with tomatoes/cucumbers/onions/capers/micro greens/cream cheese, all assembled together (seemingly a miracle in this town). It was hefty and tasted great, and worth it for the price. I got a burrito and it was cheesy- it came with salsa but I didn't even really need it, it wasn't dry. Happened to stumble upon Coffee Roastery in Fairfax on our way to Cataract Falls for an early morning hike. Such a charming little corner spot in the heart of downtown! We stopped in around 7 AM and were pleasantly surprised to find a local musician performing--gave the place a cozy, old-world feel. The interior had a warm, inviting vibe, perfect for a slow morning. I didn't grab coffee since we were heading out for a hike, but a couple of my friends got pastries and enjoyed them. Unfortunately, the gluten-free selection was very limited--just a nut bar--so I wasn't able to try anything. Would love to see more GF options in the future! A place that actually roasts their own coffee (albeit leaves the roasted bean in a clear plastic bag in the sunny window), yet they have ABSOLUTELY no idea how to make an espresso beverage! All four of us got espresso-based drinks and all agreed they were perhaps the worst coffees we'd ever had. Over-extracted espresso with copious amounts of foam. Just terrible. Have been to the other Coffee Roastery and have experienced the exact same phenomenon. Insult to injury, the folks that work here are not friendly. Not sure how this place has survived for so long. I really loved the roastery's location and the interior decor. If you are a coffee fan, you simply are attracted to it by its nameboard on the outside. Once you step in you get immersed in this quaint old building with vintage menus and seating arrangements. I really loved my cappuccino- as the coffee had a great flavour and it was dark roasted as per my liking. Although I would say stay away from desserts, as I tried a almond crossaint but was severely underwhelmed by it- it was really spongy and kinda had no crispness to it and probably it was aerated for quite a long time The people serving food and drinks are very warm and welcoming and I had no complaints there! read more

My partner and I were in the area and decided to stop at the Coffee Roastery for a quick pit stop. You can never go wrong with coffee especially if the coffee shop has pastries so I was very excited to see that their display cases were packed full of options. Parking is all along the streets, no meter and no payment necessary. We parked a block away and took a nice stroll over. I will say, it seems very packed on the weekend even around 3pm in the afternoon so not sure what the right time is to beat the rush. I opted for their black & white and a blueberry coffee crumble cake. While the drink tasted pretty standard, the star of my time here was the blueberry coffee crumble cake. This quaint -hippie- modern coffee shop is too cute! Last time I was here there was a musician playing, and I love their organic coffee options! I was the first costumer in line and the Barista was very patient with me, since I can never figure out what I want to drink and I ended up getting a specialty espresso drink. Hee. The service here is excellent and the coffee is okay. Not the most affordable, but that checks out for the area. The owner has some crazy political beliefs, though, that don't seem to align with a good portion of the city of Fairfax. He's very right wing and I won't be supporting that. read more

After hiking the Cataract trail on Mt Temalpais we needed somewhere quiet to catch our breath. We stumbled back into town and headed for TCR. Street side parking is free up to 2 hours too. The space is small and quaint and gives that small hometown feel. In the main dining area there are tables for coffee dates or and a row of bar seats to perch yourself by a window + a few secluded seats by the side exit door. Be ready to really read the menu above the baristas, there are so many yummy concoctions, in addition to a descriptive roadmap of roasts of their coffees. If you're a coffee connoisseur, I'd suggest you take a seat and a big breath in to delight your ol' factory bulbs. You can never go wrong with just a coffee black but if you have more than 5 minute, order yourself a Mexican mocha; you won't regret it! read more

Was charged tax and cup washing fee for coffee. They charge 25 cent paper cup fee, to encourage people not to use disposable cups, but then punish you for using washable cup. The posted price is not what you pay, which is dishonest. They have a sign stating that they are sorry they have to charge 25c disposable cup fee, and they might get fined for using so many disposable cups. However, I looked it up, and seems they keep the cup fee as a profit. read more

A lovely coffee shop in downtown Fairfax that attracts cyclists, locals, and visitors alike! The decor is nice and homey. Their menu is extensive - I counted 8 different types of mochas! I tried the Mexican Mocha and thought it was okay. The drink had quite a bit of milk. It tasted mostly like chocolate milk. My friends ordered lattes and enjoyed their beverages. Keep in mind that if you are visiting them during pandemic, you are REQUIRED to wear a mask. Otherwise you're not welcomed. They have a huge menu. You'll find yourself staring at it and thinking "oh my God, where do I start?" Especially if you have never tried this place before. Their machines are super loud, we were sitting outside and heard the loud noise. Another important thing to note, THEY ARE STRAW FREE, absolutely 0 straws. If you order frappuccino, like I did (not knowing they were straw free), good luck drinking that. Especially if you add whipped cream on top, like I did. That cream will be all over your hands. This was the most challenging drink of my life. I got the cream off, tried to drink it, the whole thing started coming out and dripping from sides. So I put a lid on that they gave me. Started drinking and nothing gets in my mouth, just little drops. I had to wait for it to completely melt and then I was able to drink it. The taste was okay but if I had to go back, I wouldn't be excited about them. Maybe try something else, not frappuccino, for a better experience. read more

If you're in Fairfax and need to get your Fair-fix, then I would definitely swing by the Coffee Roastery. This place serves up a decent cup of Joe, and it attracts quite the cast of local characters (everyone from spandex clad bicyclists to old-time hippies, to hipster teenagers). You'd be hard-pressed to find a more Motley Marin Crew. And that's what I truly love about this town. It's so distinctly Fairfax. I was driving through Fairfax recently and needed a caffeine bump. I was lucky enough to park right out in front of Coffee Roastery. There was quite a line of people waiting to order (which I thought was impressive given the whole Coronavirus lockdown/S.I.P. orders). But Fairfax plays by its own rules. Outside the shop there were about 10 bicyclists mixing and mingling. I can't say that they were all wearing masks (and I don't think that bike helmets really count), but like I said... Fairfax plays by its own rules. As for the coffee here, it's good (not great). But it's strong enough and bold and gets the job done. Since we're still technically in lockdown, there was only one barista in the shop. He was a young kid who was doing the best he could to ring up orders and then create espresso beverages for all the thirsty patrons. It would definitely help if he had some sort of bar-back to speed things up. But beggars can't be choosers, and I was just happy to get my hands on some caffeine during this crazy time. Long story short... if you're in Fairfax and want a true taste of this eclectic community and an early morning/mid-afternoon pick-me-up, I highly recommend grabbing a cappuccino & snack at the Coffee Roastery and doing a little people watching while you're at it. read more

A few very early mornings find me in Fairfax, around 6:30AM. Last Saturday was one of those days. I stop in the Coffee Roastery, as the location is convenient, and the coffee pretty good. I wasn't too thirsty, so I asked if they had an 8 oz serving. The guy working the counter pointed to the selection of cup sizes on top of the counter behind me. I asked for an 8 oz coffee, and he filled an 8 oz cup. He then charged me for a 12 oz cup. I told him I didn't want to be rude, but he'd charged me for a 12 oz serving. He said they didn't really have the 8 oz serving, and it is really just for kids. So I said if he was going to charge me for 12 oz, give me a 12 oz cup, filled up. How can you have an 8 oz cup on display, but not "really" have an 8 oz serving? read more

The price is really expensive, nice interior but the 2 baristas were rude! They do not have straws out on the countertop! I asked for 2 straws and she rolled her eyes and looked at me with disgust! She handed me 1 and I asked for another, she was clearly annoyed! After standing there for a few minutes, while there were 4 of them behind the counter! I asked another barista for a straw and she glared at me and walked away! By then another customer came to the counter and had asked for a straw! I usually get a decaf latte and a blueberry coffee cake, but over the years I've ordered various things. The coffee/drinks are below average, and except for the blueberry coffee cake, which is great, the food isn't very good. And a lot of it doesn't seem very fresh. Also, the service here is usually pretty bad. A couple of the employees are consistently grumpy. As an introvert who deals with customers all day everyday I get it - I know we all have bad days. But it's not that hard to put on a fake smile and act like you want to be there. The location itself is also very poorly laid out. There's a lot of stuff/displays that could be done differently to get more space for tables. This really isn't a place where you can hang out and work or have a casual conversation. I wish we had a Starbucks in Fairfax. Yes, I know, chains are banned (except for 7-11 I guess) but seriously, the owners and managers of this business and it's equally poorly reviewed sister place in San Anselmo need to do some serious work. read more
