Did you say HEMP LATTE? Very appropriate since we're in Fairfax - land of the Hippies, Free Love, Tie Dye Shirts, Jerry Garcia music and WEED. Some legal, some illegal...but who cares; I'm here for the coffee. As I recall, it was also April 20, 2013 when I first set foot here. I kid you not. 4/20? What a coincidence. I thought it was just a special promotion, but they have it on the menu every day. Gave it a try and I thought it was bitter. I expected more of a wow factor, I guess. I can say that it was once in a lifetime experience and I can proclaim that I've tried Hemp Latte. But it was just too bitter for my taste. I do like the place though and have tried their regular Soy Latte and other drinks. It's also lively and people congregate here on the weekends after and before a hike. There's also a bunch of cyclist fueling up before climbing up the mountain. I also like the décor and color of the place as I can only describe it as a mustard-yellowish tone that is very pleasant to the eye. It's also strategically located on the corner of town where it attracts a lot of people. Overall, the coffee is decent...but it lacks the wow factor just from the taste perspective. Maybe because I am so spoiled with Blue Bottle and Philz here in the city. But hey...that's what other places should strive by in order to compete with the big boys. Will I come here again? Sure...it's a nice place in a nice area. And at least it's not a Starbucks. read more

I decided to stop in for a coffee and was pleasantly treated to one of the best iced coffees that I've had for some time. Hands down one of the best coffee I've ever had! Because I prefer regular (dark) coffee with only half & half, it's easy for me to taste the quality of the actual coffee, and this place was amazing. I was passing through town and arrived early one morning. As other customers trickled in, many appeared to be regulars and some seemed to have wondered in in their PJs...very homey atmosphere. There was free music by a pair of singers; the lead singer looked as if he might own the place?? I didn't ask if the singing is there every morning but the music was soft and hauntingly lovely. The decor is full of art nouveau motifs and the front door alone is a piece of artwork. I will stop in if ever in the neighborhood again. read more

I bought whole beans here, but I won't recommend others to do so. I heard from the staff that the beans I purchased were roasted 2 days before I bought them, but when I brewed my coffee, there were no CO2 bubbles. Also, I asked for a medium roast but seemed pretty dark. The taste and smell were weak, so I don't think I'll order whole beans again. read more

Great find. We've driven through Fairfax numerous times and this was the first time we stopped for coffee at this place. There was plenty of seating inside (very minimal outside) and the staff was quite friendly. I got the iced coffee with room and the coffee was definitely above the average run of the mill. My wife ordered iced latte and according to her, it was just the way she likes it. There was a steady line of clientele that came in throughout the time we were inside. It never got crowded and the noise level was actually great (minus the occasional fire truck driving by with lights and siren). We will definitely come back to this place on the way to Point Reyes. read more

A sad day indeed but one I have seen coming for quite some time. I have patronized this store as well as the one in San Anselmo for a great many years. Today I visited the Fairfax store and wanted to purchase a pound of whole bean Ethiopia Yirgacheffe. I rotate between a number of medium roast varieties and today the choice was the Yirgacheffe. At first the young lady behind the counter stated that they were out. A gentleman, the other cashier, interrupted and said there was indeed Yirgacheffe in stock. "Great!", replied I, "Give me a pound of whole beans please." It took him quite some time to locate the stash. Once found, he bagged up the beans, charged me, stamped my frequent buyer card and off I went. When I got back to my car I opened the bag just to make sure and found some variety of peaberry; not the usual medium roast Yirgacheffe beans I had paid for. The reason I mentioned that I have seen this coming is that a number of times, when talking to the cashiers, I have asked about a particular single source bean and its roast and been met with lack of knowledge of even an understanding of what I had been inquiring about. When the proprietor is present I have had no problem at all but I have only seen him at the San Anselmo location and rarely at that. The staff is always friendly and helpful but have very limited knowledge about what they sell. From now on I will be going to Petaluma Coffee and Tea Company as every staff member is knowledgeable about their products and, like the Coffee Roastery, they have a frequent buyer card. The prices are also a bit lower than the Coffee Roastery. Even if this weren't the case the knowledge is worth the extra cost and drive time to Petaluma. Yes, I am disappointed. read more

Coffee Roastery is pretty good if you're downtown Fairfax looking for a nice cup of joe. Their menu is pretty large for a coffee shop which is awesome. The maple latte is a quite a treat. The atmosphere seems very laid back and the ambiance is nice. The only downside is they only have Splenda for sugar. I really wish they had other options like raw sugar or stevia. My husband and I would be back more often if they did. read more

The Fairfax Coffee Roastery is an unquestionably Fairfax-ish sort of place. Its not trying to be anything other than what it is. Unfortunately, this is a Roastery, and because of that - even two stars is generous. We ordered two drinks, a latte breve, and a mocha latte. On the very first sip, both of us looked at each other and grimaced. The taste of the espresso had a bitter-sour character that was just unforgivable. No sense of a freshly roasted bean; no notes of any sort. Just a lasting burnt-toast taste that took a while to get out of our mouths. I'm so sorry. This is otherwise a really nice place, but I can't let something this bad go unnoticed. The expectation of a place that roasts its own beans should be high. Their drink selection is beyond impressive. They carry everything from sweet bun flavored coffee, to piping hot chai lattes, to hot apple cider. They have free-wi-fi. A warm glow glides through this adorable coffee shop. Everyone seems to know each other, as they smile fondly at the servers, at each other, while they catch up about life and the morning paper. It smells like goodness here. It feels like goodness here. And if you've just come back from a long trip across the bay - there's nothing like using their restroom quickly and then grabbing a hot reassuring cup of just brewed love. Trust. read more

Friendly service, great location, good coffee, cool decor, but looooong lines and not a lot of places to sit. Well it DOES have character. I'll give it that. A cool atmosphere with the artwork and the old-fashioned coffee roaster. It at least feels authentic and fun. The coffee is good but not outlandishly so. I had the dark roast and it was worth the $2. I enjoyed it. Not a whole lotta places to sit down. The old-fashioned roaster takes up quite a bit of real estate. It certainly adds to the ambience and is one of their main differentiators, but they could offer quite a few more seats if the roaster wasn't there. Jus saying. Don't hate. Stopped by post hike and thought this coffee shop looked really cool. It's very much has that hipster/hippy vibe to it with like 1800s signage - intriguing no?? What I loved about the decor especially was the "green" storage of coffee beans which just meant there were giant bags of beans sitting on the floors and on benches -- not sure if you're allowed to sit on them like bean bag chairs though. Anyways, got a regular iced coffee, friend got a decaf iced coffee, and another got a smoothie. The regular iced coffee was actually okay. It was a lighter roast but wasn't overly bitter. They just tapped it out of a water cooler sort of thing. I didn't look to see where the decaf came from but it was some of the worst coffee I've ever had! I don't know how it was brewed but it was thin and had high acidity to the point that even adding sugar and milk didn't do a ton to cover up the bad flavors. I didn't try the smoothie but apparently it was weird because they used an apple juice base which caused it to have an artificial taste (my friend ended up throwing out half of it). They do sell whole beans and seem to have a great variety. I just wished you could actually choose what types of beans you wanted for your coffee. Or maybe you can but just not for the iced? First of all a disclaimer. I am a coffee roasting company owner in a different country on a different continent. I moved to Fairfax and I was excited to see this place. The place itself is superb. I love that it is situated on a corner the interior design makes you feel like you are in a coffee friendly place. The rustic, retro furniture, San Franciscan Coffee roaster and the "untidy" coffee bag makes the atmosphere of this place amazing. The things I did not like was the service and the coffee. Service was sterile, boring, unexcited. Place like this requires true coffee geeks who love their job and not staff bored to death. And coffee sux big time. I got a espresso and the coffee tasted over roasted. It tasted like charcoal. And that is a big no no! I am going to give this place another chance, because I really love the spirit of the place. The owner of this establishment is not a nice man. Kind of looks like Gene Wilder. Poor quality shiny bean coffee, tastes burnt and bitter! I once asked that the barista put a raw sugar packet into the latte, and she refused. I asked the owner about it and he explained he told his workers not to do it. I'm not sure why the owner trains his staff to treat customers with contempt but his attitude towards the customers is reflected in his baristas and I'm not just referring to this one incident. I made the mistake of going in again and this time engaging the owner as he worked with the big machines as they processed the cheap beans he buys. The owner was unfriendly and stood by his decision to disallow his staff to add sweeter to the drink, as every other place will do, I might add, except Coffee Roasters. He basically told me if I don't like it, go somewhere else. I quietly took my coffee to the filthy sugar and cream area and added a packet of sugar in the raw which did not dissolve completely due to the temperature of the latte. It all went to the bottom and I chewed it when I took my last sip of the 3rd rate latte. I think people go here because it presents as a high quality cafe, lots of desserts in the cases, (also cheap and sticky and gross.) Above all, it has no neighboring competitors so it gets all the business in the shopping areas of downtown Fairfax. Avoid this place. Don't get sucked into the hype. Buy a coffee or latte at the bagel place or nearest sandwich establishment. read more

Post-Point Reyes hike and on the hunt for some good coffee as we headed back to the east bay. We came across this cute downtown strip in Fairfax and loved the look of the Roastery. Unfortunately, a poorly made mocha, sour house brew and bad customer service sent us to Starbucks 30 minutes later. I ordered a house coffee and you could tell it was old and had been sitting around for a while. My friend got a mocha and it tasted like sweet cream with almost no chocolate. So she asked for it to be remade and the barista told her they couldn't as they were closed. I was really surprised with the response-- if you make a poor product, you should try to remedy this. If you truly aren't able to fix it (or remake it in this case) offer something in lieu to show you are at least concerned about the customer's feelings. Overall just a bad experience. read more

They blend fruit smoothies, provide a case-full of pastries and sandwiches, protein bars for the gnarly bicyclists and other calorie-dense food-eaters. Location-location-location: It's on the way to the reservoir trails, and the Fairfax-Bolinas road. It's a perfect stopping point on the way out of town, or an easy landmark to meet your out-of-town buddies at. They will easily find it and enjoy the local flavor here. The bench seating outside is perfect for chatting up your bench neighbors and hanging out with your furry four-legged friend(s). PLENTY OF BICYCLE PARKING, right in front. The drinks and food I've tried from them have been good but the staff makes me uncomfortable because they are rude. One time he didn't hear me when I ordered alternative milk and when I said something to the man making my he got annoyed and accused me of not telling the cashier. And just yesterday I asked for my pastry to be heated up and again , didn't hear me and handed it to me and glared at me to take it and when I said "I'm sorry I asked it to be warmed " he snatched it from me and rolled his eyes. One shot of espresso was literally a sip for which I paid $2.00 for and a $5.50 for a blended mocha I mentioned no sugar and it was just a sugar syrup in a cup. I have such mixed feeling about this place. I love the staff and the location and come here every weekend on my way to Lake Lagunitas, and have been doing so for almost ten years. I even have a Keen water bottle with a CR logo. So trust me when I say I want to leave a 5-star review, but... they have TERRIBLE cold brew/iced coffee and that's all I drink. It's like someone took the coffee that's left over and put it in the fridge: bitter and burnt. And it's been this way for years. So now I get cold brew in San Anselmo or Pt Reyes Station and get snacks at the CR. But I dream of being able to have hood cold coffee here. read more
