Little dingy inside but enjoyed the outdoor seating area! - breakfast bagel 3/5 : was a little disturbed by the egg being cooked in the microwave, but I should've known looking at their open kitchen they were working with limited equipment. There's a lot of on-line chatter about which place makes the best bagel. In New York City, I waited in a line that stretched out the front door for what was supposedly a great bagel. When I unwrapped my purchase and took a bite I declared it "a good bagel" but no better than any other freshly made bagel I've had from purveyors of such. Barton's Bagels also makes good, fresh bagels, a fact I was reminded of on a recent visit. I arrived when the line was short and quick moving but while I sat enjoying mine (salt bagel, lightly toasted, lox shmear) the line grew so long that I was glad I'd arrived when I did. It was finals week and all the nearby high schoolers - apparently - come here when they're finished. Barton's Bagels stands the test of time. My sons are long out of high school but they continue to make a stop here when in town. It's nothing fancy but the prices are right and you know what? They make a darned good bagel. read more

Lifelong customer of Barton's and the bagels have always been delicious. However, the hygiene needs to be addressed. The woman at the counter barely rinsed her hands after working the register before making the bagels with no gloves. The gentleman at the counter was obviously sick and thankfully wore a mask but with no handwashing that doesn't really make a difference. Lastly my friend ordered and paid for tomatoes on her bagel. When it came without; she politely asked about it and was simply told "NO." This isn't the first time the orders have been messed up but given it's a local business we want to continue and support we never said anything until the hygiene was quite alarming. We have never experienced such rude and inept service. My son and I arrived, and asked for a half a dozen bagels. The man at the counter started rapidly cutting them all and putting them on the toaster, which we had not asked for. For some reason he was already annoyed and snapped "what do you want on them?!?". It was only the. That we realized they were our bagels he was cutting. I said "stop", though my son tried to be politely placating by saying "it's OK just please don't cut the others". The man responded by throwing up his hands, walking toward the back and saying "I can't help you I'll get someone else" We left. I'm all for supporting local businesses but not when people are rude like that. The only reason that this is 2 stars and not one is that my son insists that people have been nice other times. They have a good variety including Asiago, garlic, tomato basil, pumpkin, rye, sesame, chocolate, and blueberry. Their bagels are fresh and chewy, well worth the price at a $1.10 a piece. I got a half dozen bagels: sesame, Asiago, garlic, and pumpkin. They also sell mini bagels, day old bagels, and other items on the menu. They are located in downtown San Anselmo. Street parking only. We love the bagels and have been going here for 15+ years. Today was the third time we were treated extremely rudely by the morning staff. There are two relatively new people, a man and a woman, working in the morning. The woman consistent gets the order wrong, and the man is surly to the point of nasty, especially if we dare to ask for the order to be corrected, for the bagel to be cut in half or if we stand in the "wrong" place. We won't be going here anymore despite our love of the bagels which is sad and a testament to have badly we feel after our interactions with them now. Our weekly morning tradition with our son has been soured to the point that it is no longer worth going. read more

The bagels are fantastic. The counter and service setup needs help. If you go to the counter and want a couple of bagels to go and someone in front of you orders 4 sandwiches, you have to wait for them. The counter is huge and could easily accommodate another cash register at the other end for folks who either want sandwiches or to-go bagels. The line would move much faster. I live in the neighborhood and pop in every now and then. Will never go there again after my last visit on Friday morning. I received my bagel and it was barely toasted and all of the cream cheese was on one side. No biggie. I went back in to ask to have it actually fully toasted and I was practically run out of the shop. I was extremely reasonable and nice completely perplexed as to the hostility over a simple request that I didn't mind waiting to have fulfilled (had already been waiting 15 minutes for my first bagel so at this point what did it matter). Finally I just kind of laughed it off and asked if I could just get a new bagel and I will go home to toast it (which I did). The guy tossed a new bagel at me in a bag and barked at me to get cream cheese from the refrigerator. When I asked if he would mind cutting it in half, he lost it and said I was the problem (not the new toaster that apparently is slow and doesn't work well) and other such nonsense. It was pure insanity all around over a toasted bagel request. Absolutely horrendous customer service. Never been treated so terribly by one of our lovely downtown establishments. When I was sharing my experience at the park with a neighbor, he knew exactly which guy I was talking about and said he's had similar experiences with him at both places he works at downtown. Delicious I've had the lox on Asiago and garlic--both really good. It comes with plain cream cheese, red onions, lettuce, tomatoes and capers. I like it without the tomatoes, but that's me. If they put just a little more salmon in the bagel it would be a five star for me. read more
