Remember, one human can only physically scoop so much ice cream in a minute. The process cannot be rushed. Patience will be rewarded... I promise. 3) Have cash. 4) Their waffle cones and cups are handmade, so the crunchiness or chewyness may vary. Some may be more crunchy or or chewy than others. If you see the line out the door, never fear; just brave it (unless it's very close to closing time at 10pm!). The staff are always awesome with making the wait as short as possible. This is a perplexing place. Ice cream is a 5, but store operational execution is a 1 - therefore a 3 overall. Owners should visit a Salt and Straw location to see what operational excellence looks like. Salt and Straw is both a 5 re their ice cream and a 5 on store level operational execution. Bummer that they haven't expanded to Marin yet. 1. Take and encourage credit cards - charge us the merchant card fee. 3% more on a $5 scoop is nominal. If you're just trying to avoid taxes, pay your taxes like other small businesses. Charge us the additional cost to cover your taxes. Cash slows down the line. The other option is personal check - the fact that this is even an option in 2026 for $5 ice cream is mind blowing. You can charge more for your ice cream and I'm sure most people in Marin would be willing to pay more to not have to wait in an unnecessarily long line due to poor operational execution 2. Don't sell pints when the store is busy. How on earth does it make sense to have the single scooper scooping 5 pints for a customer when the line is out the door. Why don't you have pre packaged pints again like Salt and Straw if you want to be in the pint business. 3. Don't train new scoopers in the height of rush hour on a Sat night. Putting up a sign to be patient doesn't counteract that it doesn't make logical sense to do this when it's incredibly busy 4. It's a very basic menu - set up ordering kiosks or having a roaming order taker so it speeds up the line. Have people pre pay with credit card on a IPad with the roaming order taker or at the kiosk 5. Have two scoopers looking at an order screen driven by the roaming order taker or kiosks who have already received payment Only good thing other than their incredible ice cream is that they don't give samples. This is very sensible given the lines! Just because it's been around forever and has great ice cream doesn't mean you need to run the business like it's 1960. Best traditional ice cream in the Bay area. I always stop there when in transit from point reyes. Extremely delicious, environmentally conscious and varying flavors, including always having survey, and at least one other vegan flavor. I only complaints. They have a lot of different kinds of ice cream, but don't always have one and with chips in it. I have told them before their policy should be that they always have at least one flavor with chips. Wow, is this in California? After seeing $5.40/gallon on the sign at the gas station, walking into Scoop felt like I was swiftly transported in another era. The line was beginning to spill out of the shop when we arrived and by the time we left, it was out the door the queue extended further down the street. The retail space on the inside is about the size of a postage stamp. Super small. A couple of tables on the left for seating (although no one was sitting, as I would feel to cramped to sit there while people are right next to you in line). There is a water cooler and then 2 ice cream freezers with their flavors. I understand that they make their ice creams in house, as well as their waffle cones and bowls. These are a couple of unique things about Scoop that I found: - pricing: Kids $2.75; 1 scoop (1-2 flavors) $3.75; 2 scoop (3-4 flavors) $4.75....say what? Where I come from, a kids scoop is about the price of Scoop's 1 and 2 scoop. PLUS, it's cash only, so start looking in the cracks of your couch... - they are a minimal waste shop, meaning, you can either have your ice cream in a real ceramic bowl with metal spoon for dine in, or you have to get your ice cream in a cone, unless you want to lick it from a waffle bowl. They don't have to-go packaging. I'm assuming that the only things are the napkins, the paper water cups for the water cooler (you have to ask for them behind the counter) and the pints for the ice cream (they'll give you a discount if you bring your own container). The line seemed to go pretty quickly, considering only one dude was serving and cashing out. There were other people around but they were helping to replenish the case. The ice cream was very creamy and delicious. I ended up getting the coffee which was delightful. They had some unique flavors like Moroccan mint tea. Wish I could have tried, but with the prices and the line, no samples is a policy. Scoop is down the street from my friend's house and they said that every time the sun comes out, there is a constant line out the door from open to close. Cons-the one way in and one way out systems we see at many of these smaller establishments drives me batty. It's like a traffic jam and ice cream had a baby. I understand sustainability practices are aiming for better for the environment but the cone heavy funnel they get you into creates anxiety. This place rocks! I discovered it this afternoon and came back for seconds later this evening. They are clearly popular based on the long lines but it is well worth it. They make everything here and it's a zero-waste facility. So you are not getting plastic spoons, you can get a metal spoon that you can use there and return or you can get the ice cream in a cone to go. I got the toasted sesame (make sure to get some of the top layer which has the sesame) which was heaven and so was the hidden treasure. I got mine in a waffle cone...felt like a kid again. But anyways, pretty much all of their flavors are amazing. They've got a mix of lovable classics and some super unique combos that they rotate out regularly on their menu. This is a SUPER tiny place and lots of times that line is out the door, but they truly know how to make it work. The kids at the counter are so sweet! They really work hard to make everyone happy. Their "regular" is actually two scoops and it's only $3.25. Um whaaaa?? Yeah buddy. They be hookin' it UP. Plus... did you peep that scoopage game? A regular size is humongooo! You better come hungry for ice cream or go home. For real! I love that they use real utensils here and are non waste (no plastic spoons and they offer waffle bowls and cones only). They also encourage people to bring their own spoons from home since they don't provide them at this time (I'd just go with a cone if you don't have one when you visit). The only reason why I can't give them 5 stars is because this business is still operating as cash only even during the pandemic. I just feel like at this point, they really need to broaden their horizons and start accepting cards. If anything, it's also more of a cleanliness issue since cash gets passed around waaay more often than someone's personal debit card does. Plus, they have touchless machines now and machines that only require the customer to stick the card in and that's it. But, that's just my two cents about that. We stopped here to get ice cream the other day, and we're very glad we did. The flavors were really excellent, especially the salted caramel, which I think may have only been a temporary flavor. (My girlfriend remarked that it was one of the best ice cream flavors she had ever had.) The prices were quite low, we thought, and the servings very large: A double in a waffle cup was definitely more ice cream than I needed, but I'm not complaining. There are some slight disadvantages of this shop. For example, they won't do normal cups for a single or double scoop, only for a pint or quart, and so you either have to get a waffle cup, which I don't really value, or a metal cup, which means you can't leave. Also, they don't have compostable spoons or anything like that, only offering metal ones, which again means if you're eating from a bowl and don't have your own spoon, you need to stay put. This wasn't the worst thing in the world, because the shop is on a nice town strip with some benches outside, but in a rush it is a bit less convenient than I would like. Also, the store doesn't offer samples, and so you don't really get to try your flavor in advance, but thankfully all the flavors we tried were pretty good. The storefront is also pretty small, and so I can imagine it getting quite busy if a bunch of people go at once, although that wasn't the case for us. All in all, this was a very good ice cream shop, and we definitely recommend it to other people. Try the salted caramel if you can! read more
