When it's hot out, their sorbets are especially refreshing. The guanábana is another standout and so good on a warm day. Service is always kind and welcoming. Parking can be a little tricky since it's downtown, but you can usually find a spot. Sometimes it's quick, other times it just takes a short loop around the block. Stopped by La Michoacana a few years ago with a friend after getting something to eat, meal-wise, not too far away. We were looking for some ice cream and this is the place we settled on. The suite was straightforward to find and not overly crowded when we arrived. I went with a scoop of cappuccino almond type ice cream that was creamy and flavorful. If truth be told, a recent trek to a Novato's Mt. Burdell Preserve was just a masked excuse. Post-hike, I hadn't been back in the car 5 minutes before asking if we could go to La Michoacana. My reasons for wanting to go here were two-fold: First, I believe it's the only place in Marin where one can get a Mangonada. Second, I'd once gone to a place in the Palm Desert area that bears the same name and found their Mangonada superb. I like Mangonadas. Actually, I sort of love them and the ones at this outpost of La Michoacana were no exception. Though the worker at this shop said they make theirs a little different than some places, I am apparently just a lover of any Mangonada. These were excellent. The usual mix of salty, sweet, tart, chewy, and tangy. To me, a Mangonada could only have originated in Mexico. If the world were a just place, the Mangonada would be as ubiquitous as the taco. I also tried a cupful of ice cream (caramel, custard: both good and positively gritty with sugar). Though the offerings were similar, this La Michoacana looked different than the one I'd gone to in the desert and when asked I was told that the owner also owns a La Michoacana in Sonoma. Whether all of them are related remains a mystery to me but here's what I do know: * The Mangonada here is reason enough to head to Novato; * Maybe also for a frozen banana, paleta, or ice cream; and * I'll likely stop at every La Michoacana I see from here on out. We stopped in on a Friday afternoon. It wasn't too busy. I've not been in before, but I sensed that the others ordering were regulars. The ice cream assortment is limited. I ordered a cone for my husband and asked for a spoon for my dog. She was very kind about the tiny bit for the dog. The total for a single scoop cone and taste was $5.50. Seems pricey. I guess the taste wasn't free. Her attitude toward me was brisk. My husband finished the cone. He said that the waffle cone itself was tasty. Been meaning to try out La Michoacana for quite sometime, but always seems to forget about it until recently. They have one near my home, but of course the first ever visit for me is to their Novato location, oh well. Being downtown Novato on a busy weekend can be tough for parking, but perseverance wins when it comes to finding a spot nearby. Once inside, it is clean and spacious with loads of color, just like its sister ice cream shop. They offer typical ice cream, ice cream bars, and some savory snacks on certain days it seems. Pricing is very affordable and they give you quite a bit of ice cream for how much you pay for. Flavor wise, they seem to rotate, but when I was there, I was suggested by the employee to get Mexican Caramel and Rompope (Similar to Egg Nog). While the flavors rocked, the hospitality of the staff fell way short. I am not usually one to complain, but I barely got acknowledged and honestly it was a very awkward transaction. That is not something to give a complete negative review over, but definitely not getting brownie points from me on it. This is a great hidden gem in Novato for mostly ice cream and a few snack foods. Here, I have discovered that Taki's & ice cream go very well together - what can I say tho because Im a spice fanatic! What's fantastic is that there is a Mexican grocery store right next-door where you can purchase produce, and some other Mexican foods. Happened to come here on an evening following an art party at studio for art, it was perfect for the elementary school kids to get some ice cream, have their birthday party cake and the art on the walls makes it a perfect photo scene for great pictures. Staff were super accommodating to our large group. They have so many unique ice cream flavors here and also some custom-made desserts that will blow your mind. Ten minutes to spare and we happened to be nearby in downtown Novato...so we had our first paletas of summer (better late than never). We all went for the more milky kinds rather than the juicy ones - strawberries and cream, cookies and cream...and pistachio because it reminded me of spumoni ice cream which I tried a few months ago and loved...this tasted just like that (minus the chocolate and cherry), but more nutty, like me. At $2.50 a pop (still!) it's likely to become habit forming this time of year, so I will definitely be looking for more spare minutes (and change) for these refreshing treats. Yum I would've the mango and Hickam a spicy cup and it was quite tasty. My wife informs me that in Los Angeles they have much bigger and better and more options on these type of things being a Mexican treat. However this was pretty tasty and not bad for Novato and I thought it was a nice alternative to getting ice cream or anything like that. The spices and fruit combination do fill you up and it's only five bucks. Also for those who are non-dairy or vegan are such, they do serve sorbets and frozen treat bars that are non-dairy. They also have ice cream and milk-based treat bars; but they have plenty of options here for the non-milk drinker. The atmosphere is very friendly toward children. They have small tables with small chairs as well as large tables with large chairs; and high tops. The service was very friendly and he really helped us with our customized order. We were being picky because the children wanted cones but we also wanted to put it into cups and get sprinkles and he took care of all that no problem. I was very surprised by this place. The ice creams look deceivingly basic and modest in color, but not at all in flavor! My rose petals ice cream definitely had real rose water in it! The marzipan peanut butter had pieces of marzipan, the mango ice cream had chunks of mango and we also had coconut. Loved them all. These ingredients either fooled me or were totally real and natural! It is refreshing to have full flavored ice creams and not just a scoop of cream and sugar with a drop of whatever flavoring. I heard this ice cream shop was going to open and have been patiently waiting, they opened on Valentines day how perfect. Super bright colored walls and chairs greet you when you walk in, parking in back lot or on the street. If you walk in from Grant you walk to the back of the store to start the line (a sign might be nice for customers) and they have a huge selection of delicious and unique flavors. We got the banana split to share and tried the pistachio (so so good) Neapolitan (creamy perfection) and chocolate (rich chocolate) my kids were in heaven. They had a bunch of yogurt flavors too and everything was crazy fresh and brightly colored. I was reminded of the ice cream flavors in Delores Hidalgo (tequila ice cream, Mexican revolution, beautiful pottery, etc) Lots of folks coming in the door, families on a Sunday, teenagers on their phones.
