i stopped by because I wanted to try a new place in the area. I'm always at Green Seed Vegan during my class breaks and wanted a change of scenery. This is the place. It's a very vibe and earthy feel. I walked inside the gated and ordered at the window outside. One of the guys working there let me know that they're getting ready to open the inside but it's all outdoors for now which is cute AF. I ordered a vegan taco and a GLM tea. The space is beautiful. It's a perfect pace to get work done, get a tan and have a cute coffee date. But we are in Houston so outside and get a little sweaty. The taco and tea were a really good combo. The tea...ahhhh so refreshing!!! This is definitely on my list of places to pop in and chill at especially with the university being nearby. read more

So I ended up here after a prior dining experience close by didn't go so well. Decided to grab a coffee as I waited to attend a meeting nearby. This place is totally non-descript outside but o-so-cute inside! The interior has a very artsy, laid back swank feel. The menu is solid - I got a pistachio coffee and it was GREAT! The staff was super friendly and while the place had a good amount of people, seating was still available. Tasty food in a gentrifying neighbourhood. Dowling seems so barren compared to twenty years ago with the houses bulldozed down and removed. The cafe looks like a converted house from the outside with a limited and crumbling parking lot. You may have to parallel park on the street instead. You can get a light meal here with their portions being typical for a cafe. The clientele and environment is mostly bohemian. The Not-So-Butter Chicken was delicious although there was a strong citrus taste that may be off-putting to others. I liked how the texture vegetable protein pieces looked like it had pieces of bone sticking out. The enchilada empanada was not exceptional in spice or size. The chai latte was on point. read more

We finally made it here for dinner after months of contemplating when we should make our move. It's not that Doshi House Cafe is terribly far or there's any sort of possible inconveniencing involved. Sometimes we just can't help but default to trusty EaDo Vietnamese favorites . . . anyway. The physical establishment is unassumingly located in a fairly quiet area (at least when we were there), but the cafe cozy itself was very well populated. It seemed like most of the patrons were regulars, which I took as a good sign. The owner, Deepak Doshi, I believe?, was so kind to offer us his table, but we were able to claim a small table by the door. So for dinner, the sandwiches are no longer available, but you can opt for the special meal of the evening. On Wednesday, that happened to be the 3 bean chili. It arrived with a couple of slices of toasted bread and I wouldn't have deemed it sufficient, but man, was it tasty and satisfying! We also supplemented with the mushroom soup and salad. We both agreed that the mushroom soup was perhaps a bit too peppery, but still quite good and creamy - couldn't really discern it was vegan. I will say the abundantly protein-ed salad was awesome! Salads are usually you know, salads - boring raw veggies tossed together, but usually not very substantial. This salad and the chili - we were soon approaching totally gross full-ness. Oh, I should mention the chai tea was reportedly glorious, as per the boyfriend. As other reviewers have mentioned, Deepak is as warm and as lovely as can be - super engaging and friendly and based on the brief exchanges we had. I am looking forward to trying out the paninis sometime in the near future. Just need to remember to actually do that! read more

Apparently, I'm a sucker for coffee shops with mismatching, eclectic collections of furniture. Which makes Doshi House the perfect place to try. The parking is pretty much nonexistent, but there is plenty of street parking. Both people working there were super friendly, which is the best. We came in at an off hour, so the place was nice and empty. I ordered a latte, which was pretty solid. Their menu seems to have a few more interesting drinks though, so I'll have to try those next time. What really won me over was the Mumbai Streets Panini. SAMOSA IN SANDWICH FORM!? SO GLORIOUS. I actually ate everything, even the chips, which is rare. My friend got an Urban Peppers Panini, which was also delicious (mmm...mushrooms). Any place that serves solid coffee AND fantastic food (they have empanadas too!) is a win in my book. Plus, Doshi has a "pitcher of ideas" on the counter, so every Wednesday from 6:30-7:30 pm, you can take one and just discuss it with people. That's awesome. Definitely coming back. P.S. Doshi House is located on the edge of 3rd ward which may instill a sense of trepidation for some, but have little fear because this area is becoming more and more gentrified as time goes on. Customers with nice cars drive in and out for a cup of coffee all the time. As I walked inside the establishment, I noticed that the interior was much better looking than the exterior. The inside is stocked with a mixed assortment of old furniture and art which kind of gives this place a home feel to it. My friend and I decided to grab a spot on the back corner where they have a small wooden table nestled between an old un-matching wooden chair and a teal padded arm-chair. I ordered the lychee hot tea and it was better than I expected. It had just the right amount of lychee aroma and taste to blend in with the tea leave's natural flavor. It comes in a small cup but there is free refill on hot water. The tea bag definitely lasts more than two cups. The empanadas here are also surprisingly really good. I highly recommend you try one. It comes to you hot on a plate after they heat it up in a conventional oven. If you don't feel like eating an empanada, they also serve a "meal of the day" item. When I went, it was "not so butter chicken" day (see attached picture). It's basically like butter chicken, but not really. To be honest, I found the flavor it a bit unbalanced but my friend really enjoyed it. It also came with slices of seasoned naan-like bread. With a nice atmosphere, good food and drinks, and free wifi, I don't see why this place doesn't deserve my five stars. I finally got the chance to visit this place after hearing about it for so long. Although rumors of the area being in a less-than-ideal part of town made me pause, it was only for a microsecond. The idea of house-made chai and spiced espresso intrigued me! So did the food, but I suspected that they were off limits to me (we're vegetarian but don't eat onion or garlic). The place was easy enough to find, though small, and the area could be worse (in short: don't let the people saying it's in the bad part of town stop you). It has a small parking lot to match. Even so, the interior was cozy, going for the vintage look. The chairs were beat up and the upholstered chairs were well-worn... The foam innards were peeking through the thinning cover. If I were not wearing pants, it would be a bit itchy. There are a decent amount of small tables, which was great. I was planning on enjoying some chai while catching up on writing back to some pen friends. I ended up getting the chai and nashta, or traditionally made chai (spicier/stronger than the original, or so they said) with plantain chips and cookies on the side. The chai was good - well spiced and not too sweet - and the sides were a welcome finger food. The plantain chips were light and crispy (but not seasoned, which I personally liked) and the cookies were awesome dipped in the chai! Word of warning: it softens fast so only submerge it for a second! My sister got the vegan chai with almond milk (they don't have soy). She liked it though she said it was a little too sweet for her. My husband got the latte, which came with some latte art, which he liked well enough, though it "wasn't spectacular." I would definitely return to try the Mughal spice! It had a quiet atmosphere, but we went at around 2:30 pm on a Saturday, so it might be busier and noisier at peaks hours. When we got there, there was one other female studying. We were the loudest table; sorry, mystery lady. Service was good and the lady behind the counter was helpful and ready to answer all of our questions. They even bring your order to your table! I am very skeptical of places in third ward, not for the location, but for what some consider good or just convenient. Though I would have to say that the Doshi House isn't for just convenience. Most of the items were delicious. We ordered the Tofu Masala and Vegetarian Enchilada Empanadas, the Artesian Grill Panini and a couple of Blueberry Muffins. Everything was good, but the latter 3 really stood out the flavors oozed out of the Vegetarian Enchilada and after finishing the Panini I was saddened by the fact that it was gone. Also I know they didn't make the Blueberry Muffins, but that vended from a good place because they very moist and tasty. Updates: Goan Lentil soup really good, reminds me sambar, something that you would cover dosa or idli or even rice. Bean Empanadas: The Vegetarian Enchiladas were my favorite but I am not for sure now after tasting this one...if you enjoy beans try it and if you don't give it a try anyways, you might find that you do enjoy it. read more

Pretty sketchy looking on the outside and located in the Third Ward. The "parking lot" outside that really consists of just enough flat concrete and grass to park 4ish cars - it's a bit tough to maneuver around the large holes in the concrete and good luck getting a spot that doesn't have a muddy hole right when you step out. Clearly this neighborhood isn't glitzy, but thankfully the decor inside isn't a mirror of the parking lot. There's plenty of seating with a good mix of wooden chairs, comfy upholstered ones, and even a green couch. Some of them could most definitely be replaced, but some would say that adds to the charm. The restrooms require a key, which isn't uncommon but definitely understandable when you see a homeless person beeline for the bathroom and walk out disappointed. The art placed around the coffee shop looks like it's done by local artists. A lot of it is colorful/cartoony and goes well with the overall vibe, but some of it probably shouldn't have made it on the wall. I ordered the pistachio latte since I've never seen it on a menu before and have been wanting to try pistachio milk, which is what I assumed they would be using. My drink took a bit over 5 minutes to make and the barista brought it out to me, but she spilled a decent amount of it. She left saying that "she tried not to spill it" but no real apology nor return with napkins. So I got up to get my own napkins because the entire handle portion of the mug was covered. The latte tastes like a dirty chai or at least has hints of cinnamon and/or other spices. I wouldn't be able to tell you if this was a pistachio drink except for the fact that I drank a solid pistachio...I also ordered a yachea gogi panini, which is supposed to be a bit spicy from the Sriracha and red chili flakes. I didn't really taste the Korean influence and thought it was on the saltier side, but the banana/plantain chips were yummy. read more

Location: kinda sketchy location BUT DONT WORRY the inside is cute and does not resemble the outside at all!! Coffee: iced mocha latte 5 stars my drink was nice and cold and wasn't full of ice. They also have a lot of milk options. Food: THERE IS A WAIT TIME from what i notices it took around 15 min for people to receive their food. However it came out hot so u could tell it was fresh. Julie took care of us and was just as helpful as she was personable. Wanted OJ but opted for their Fresh Zen smoothie as a pick me up -- great recommendation by Julie. She even added a little extra oj for me cus I asked for a glass when I first came in (which they don't serve). So considerate! I happened upon this hidden treasure after searching for vegan food. As a nomad, I have come to trust local vegan establishments for fresh food and a chill vibe. Doshi House did not disappoint. They have some of the most unique and flavorful drinks. I wanted to try them all! I settled on a Pistachio Latte and the Golden Pond (Chai and lime, who would have thought!) I also grabbed a couple tacos and then settled in. The energy is calming, inviting, and even meditative. I could have simply sat there all day. The owner Deepak and Felix the chef, were both welcoming and felt like friends. My focus lately has been to truly nourish myself on all levels. They have 2 versions : a 36 hour brewed chai that is an in house concentrate and a Karak Cha which is a traditional Indian Masala chai that Oprah is totally missing out on. I'll be honest... I love milk but this vegan loving place envokes a vegan enthusiast in even the least granola meat eater. The cashew cream that siestas on their Breakfast Plate is legit!!! I've had oat milk and almond milk in other places but this place set the bar...ista! The decor has changed since I first tried out this place in its inception in 2012. Still a little bit of soul mixed in with some nap champa but with more hipster and sustainablity. They have cushioned seat options that welcome you to stay and not leave from syciatic pain. This place is situated in a historic part of Houston and they even use a historically archaic word on their menu: "victuals". I had to look up the word so I'll allow equal opportunity for the search experience and not reveal the defintion. I thanked her and said I would be calling back with a to-go order and we ended the conversation. At 7:29, I called to place my order. (Their website and yelp page state that they close at 8pm). I heard (and read) good things about Doshi House for the longest, but I was never completely sold on the idea of it because of the aesthetics (or lack thereof). If it weren't for a business meeting, I potentially may have slept on Doshi House altogether. I loved my entire experience. I had a chai latte during my meeting, which I enjoyed. However, afterwards, I ordered a black bean empanada and fell in love at first bite (literally). It was so good, I ordered two more to-go. I did not plan to stay as long, but the music was so good, I ended up just vibing out. One of the employees mentioned they would be closing for renovations in the coming months. First time trying out Doshi House and it was exceptional! I got the artisan grill panini and my husband tried the yachea Gogi panini. Both were absolutely delicious vegan sandwiches, the flavor was great in both. The side of plantain and spinach was nice also. This spot is designed beautifully, the buildings interior was vintage and charming. Very well done. And the outside was very enjoyable, we loved sitting in the outdoor sitting area for out meal and getting some sunn with our lunch. We both talked about our meal and experience the rest of the day, we will definitely be back. We had already had our morning coffee that day so did not get one of the many incredible drinks they have on their menu, but based on reviews and seeing other tables, we are also excited to try their drink menu. It seems like they may rotate out their menu as it was not the same one offered that is pictured on yelp, rather than flatbreads the evening options were tacos. Truly one of my favorite coffee shops ever. Their drinks are great but their food is honestly the show stopper for me. Im not vegan but their vegan eats downright make me wonder why I'm not. I haven't been since COVID so I can't speak to their current menu items, but their sandwiches are the best and I hope I get to have one again soon. I love the community here. We moved to Houston around June. This place has nestled quite nicely into one of our top spots for favorite cafes in the area. My regular order is a Raw Razzle (internally, I call this the Razzle Dazzle) & the Mumbai Streets sandwich. Never fails to hit the spot. Their sandwiches are always delicious. The Mumbai Streets is a well-balanced sandwich that bursts with savory delicious-ness. I've also tried the Yachea Gogi which was too savory for me, but with the help of the side of spinach, it went down very well. The sandwiches always come with a side of spinach & plantain chips. Their plantain chips have also always been very crisp & well-cooked (read: not too oily). Also, would def. recommend the vegetable empanadas. I've tried the curry one, but it pales in comparison to the vegetable ones. The Raw Razzle is delicious & you always feel quite refreshed after drinking it. The atmosphere is super chill, calming, and urban; it's perfect for a study session, catching up with friends, or a good ol' game of Catan. My only 2 gripes are: 1) sometimes, the chairs are either a little worn-down or un-sturdy and 2) you'd be better off parking on the street because their parking lot has a lot of potholes. read more
