Fantastico! A friend recommended this place and after seeing the pics and the mood for tacos, I decided to give it a try. I was surprised at how many items they have on their menu. I'm used to seeing all the different type of tacos and variations. But I've never had "Woodfired" tacos. I decided on getting one Pirata taco with flour tortilla with no cheese and to keep the avocado. I was impressed, it reminds me of street tacos from Tijuana. The place clean and not too noisy. I don't understand how this place has such good reviews. They're doing tacos completely wrong. First of all almost $5 for a taco. I thought, hey if it's really that good, I don't mind spending $5 on a good taco. But, I doubt i'd even spend a dollar on these. The meat lacked flavor and was just too salty. No onions, cilantro or lime with the tacos.. What?! Salsa had no flavor.. chips were whatever. The tortilla wasn't too bad though. The only thing I enjoyed here was the beer I got with my meal. While the concept of woodfired ingredients in a taco is novel, Dos Batos doesn't execute it well at all. Their woodfire grill must have some ventilation issues, because when we walked in, the air smelled smoky and dense. I want to taste the woodfiring, not breathe it for an hour. They have a limited menu, which is great if you do a few things really well, but nothing on their menu is particularly memorable. The buns used for their torta sandwich bread taste like you're eating straight enriched bleached flour, and as other reviewers have called out, their tortillas were hard and dry. The limited options for vegetarians were pretty unremarkable, too. The queso and guac tasted alright, but they come with these room temperature chips that taste like HEB store brand. You can also "enjoy" these chips on the side of your entrée with hot salsa for some reason. Also, their price point seems way off. An appetizer, two entrees and two alcoholic drinks should not be $30 at a counter service restaurant, I don't care how woodfired things are. I am giving two stars because I like the central location, and the Mexican creamed corn was good, although it's probably 1000 calories and you can get a tastier and more authentic version outside of Fiesta. read more

Not really sure what's wrong with all the naysayers regarding this place, but I really enjoyed it! I read other reviews that recommended the picata tacos, but I went for the torta version with the verduras fusion (fajita veggies). I checked in with my Belly app and got free charro beans which were amazing! The sandwich was huge and had plenty of meat and toppings on it. It also came with tasty salsa and chips, which I didn't expect. I got a water to drink, so I only ended up paying $9. A little steep, but it was very good and I could have had leftovers if I wasn't so hungry. Definitely recommend! The only suggestion I have for them is to improve their drink station. Pretty nice taco, give 'em a try. The place is huge, airy and clean. Possibly the biggest menu in Austin at 16'x6'? The whole place smells like BBQ smoke, which does certainly add something to the experience, but I couldn't really detect any heavy BBQ smoke flavor in the food per se. I had the beef hybrid (hybrid means it comes with grilled veggies), very nicely done with a grilled tortilla and everything seems tasty, fresh, well seasoned, and especially well assembled. This taco will not deconstruct itself in your hand, despite being heavily overstuffed like the majority of tacos in this town. Chips and salsa are OK. The charro beans are kinda weak, soupy with chunks of hot dogs in there. I probably shoulda went for the corn cup. Update: came back for the corn cup and it was not that great. Only thing missing here is crema for its tacos and tortas and outdoor seating! We were on our way to Rebel Pizza but they weren't open so drove down Anderson and found this little gem!!! We had the Mexican corn in a cup, chips & queso and tortas. The corn needed queso fresco and so did the tortas to make it more authentic but I still gobbled mine up!! It won't disappoint! The queso that comes with the chips rivals Tacodeli's queso, in other words, delicious! And the michelada is mixed with chamoy, which if you're from the Valley, you're gonna love. Came back since I was in the area after not having been in a few years. My tacos were good but not as great as I had remembered. The restaurant also had a different vibe. I saw this place on Yelp and with the reviews, I felt I needed to try it. I'm one of those that will find a particular restaurant good and then have a tough time trying something new when I'm in austin because I love it so much and because I don't always have the time to search around. I had time to search around finally and noticed they have wildfired food. It's nice and clean inside with an artsy chalk board on the wall displaying the menu. It's so large though that you need to step away just to view it all which can be a pain. It does serve as a way to have a large amount of people coming in who can all view the menu at the same time. I randomly chose two tacos and their guacamole and sat down with my iced tea. No Stevia available but I hoped the tea would stand on its own. Many teas don't and they're too watery. However, this tea was nice and strong. My tacos were ready fast. I waited maybe 3 minutes. They weren't hot but rather warm and juicy. The flavor hits you hard and you immediately notice how good it is. I've honestly not tasted tacos like this and with the larger size of the corn tortillas, it made it even better. You can taste it in every bite. I really don't prefer the small corn tortillas like Torchey's and other places have. Give me a larger tortilla that is the size of a regular flour tortilla and I'll be an even happier customer. The guac is pretty good even without pico or anything other than green ingredients. It'll make you keep dipping. The chips didn't seem homemade but at least didn't look like they just ran to H-E-B to grab off brand chips used at home parties. Not greasy either. I have mixed feelings on this place. They have one item on the menu that is very much worth getting: Steak. But in order to get the steak you have to order something with steak. Such as a taco. Now, the taco is by no means bad. I'd call it average, little bland but overall fine, good texture. But with Steak? Very good! But 'very good' in Austin is a tough sell when you can frequently have 'absolutely fantastic'. And right nearby there's a Taco Deli. And if that. It open, in the other direction, there's a Torchies. And while the steak here is great, the overall taco experience is better at both of those places. Other thoughts: Chicken is forgettable Don't get the veggies with your steak taco. They aren't bad, but they mean less steak and the steak is the only amazing thing I've tried here. The salsa tastes like marinara, so don't go pouring it on your taco before you taste it. There are very few menu options. That's not terrible but only one (steak) stands out I have not yet had the Torta. If you get it with steak, I assume it's good. Let me tell you, THIS IS A (almost) LEGIT NORTHERN MEXICAN TACO PLACE...it is as close as it gets to my tacos from Mexicali :) I think the owner is from Monterrey, Mexico so I can tell he knows his stuff. The tortillas are good and so is the torta bread (not like the nasty fake ass tortillas from torchys) Yes, in Mexico we use mozarella for tacos. It's called a sincronizada and we never use the yellow cheese. The quesosteak torta is my favorite and the micheladas are also pretty legit. I would give it a five star if it wasn't for the price $$$. P.S. they should really consider putting a salsa bar with cucumbers, lemons, radishes, etc to make it more authentic ;) read more

Hot lunch spot! Luckily the day my husband brought me here, it was a bit after the lunch hour. There was a large order in front of us so we still had to wait 5-10 minutes for our food, but it was well worth the wait. Their Charro Beans are amazing! Maybe its because they use both chorizo and bacon in them. The hubby that ALWAYS orders no beans and double rice. This place IS the exception. He had me try both the pirata and pollo pirata tacos. If I don't have take the time to eat breakfast, I'm a wreck by 10:00 a.m. Today, I had to wait until noon to drag my under nourished pathetic self into Dos Batos. After stumbling up to the counter, I quickly ordered a Pirata, a small cup of Charro Bean soup and an iced tea. And, wow, my bill was only $7.63. Where else, I ask you, can a person get such a hearty lunch for this paltry sum? Everything I ordered was fresh and delicious. The soup had pinto beans, wood fired sirloin chunks, franks (I never saw any but that's a good thing...ugh), bacon, onions and spices. It had a wonderful flavor and was the perfect temperature. My Pirata taco was stuffed to the edges with tasty woodfired sirloin, creamy sliced avocado and monterrey jack cheese. I wanted to bathe in the smoky, fire roasted salsa that came with my order. When I got up to leave, I noticed a table of soldiers waiting for their food. They looked strong and brave and I felt fortunate to be an American (with a full tummy!) I say finally, because I live in the area, go to the shopping center, and it's been on "my list" for almost a year. It's simple, not annoying, and a great concept. Do a few things well, and nothing more. I took MeatEater, MeatEater's brother (mostly vegetarian), and his wifey (eats anything). They just moved from Boston to Austin a couple days ago, and have eaten a lot of tacos since they arrived. So, i take them to another taco place. We look over the menu. I order the Jr Ostin, no cheese. MeatEater ordered the regular Pirata, mostly vegetarian brother ordered the Regular Hass (first taste of beef in a year), and his wifey orders the regular Ostin, with cheese. We get chips and salsa, too. The salsa was served hot, not warm, and it was so good that I wanted to shower in it. Lunch arrived, and it was great. Everyone really liked it. Not pricey at all, either. The Jr taco was big. And the regular size was giant. The Ostin, minus cheese, had mushroom, onion, avocado, and bell pepper. It was great, just good, simple veggies. Im a fan of vegan fast food, or the feeling of fast food. It's not often a vegan can walk in and walk out with a meal for under five bucks, and so, Dos Batos will be a new quick lunch spot for me. Don't be fooled by the name! The food here is cheap, quick and yummy. If you haven't tried them, you are really missing out on one of the better fast taco joints in Austin. They are busy enough, but there never seems to be a long line out the door like other places. Also, all beers are always $2. I can drink to that! Choose from a small menu of tacos with flour or corn tortillas and tortas. I love the option of choosing the regular or junior size. You can leave here not having to loosen your belt another notch. Each entree comes with a few tortilla chips and a small container of salsa. The house made tortilla chips are not my favorite, they are a bit thick and crunchy rather than crispy; however, the trio of dips that came with the trio sampler were tasty--- the queso was thin and flavorful and a spicy kick at the end, the avocado is smooth and well-seasoned, and the salsa is thinner than the usual, but was spicy and has a pronounced herb flavor. The signature dish is the taco pirata, containing perfectly wood grilled tender pieces of beef, avocado and Monterrey jack sandwiched between a perfect flour tortilla. If you are in a sandwich mood, I recommend the Chipotlera. Their chipotle salsa is earthy and the spices are layered and balanced. Both the fish al pastor and carnitas taquitos were also very flavourful. The fish was not dry and the carnitas was not too greasy. I am a fan of their version of corn tortillas. The slight toast on the somewhat chewy corn tortilla made for a stable vessel to hold in the meats and sauces. If you like or even if you don't like beans, Dos Batos' charro beans are the best in Austin. One thing about this place confuses me. The wall mural has a samuri and what looks to be a Mexican cowboy standing near each other. What does a samuri and Mexican cowboy have in common? Can someone school me? Also, getting a fortune cookie with my tacos and charro beans seems a bit odd. read more

Of Austin's newer, more mainstream taquerias, Dos Batos is my favorite. While the restaurant space actually goes further than others in broadcasting an ambience of cheerful whimsy, the menu reveals a perfectionist's minimalism. The selection is small but covers all the bases; the tacos are ample but not ludicrously overloaded. (Bonus: nothing is named after a sex act!) My favorites are the chipotlero taquitos, filled with shredded pork carnitas simmered in a hot and tangy chipotle sauce and topped with onions and cilantro. These are perfect tacos. read more

One bite of the red salsa and I knew they were taking this whole Mexican thing seriously, pouring it into my soup and on my pirata practically made me pitch a tent. Star 2 The pirata was filled with delicious cheese and laden with a beef explosion of epic proportion. Did I mention avocado? There was avocado hanging out in there as well. It tasted damn good by itself, no salsa needed at all. Star 3 The soup was pretty damn delicious as well, filled with pinto beans and bacon, it was was better than i expected for its measly .01 cost. I visited Dos Batos on its 4th day of operation, so please take that into account when reading this review. I also discovered that no entry for this restaurant has yet been created, and so I am glad to "introduce" you Yelpers to this new North-Central Austin Tex-Mex place. I went in for lunch, having seen the colorful, sculpted sign banner above their space in the newly built shopping center where the old Northcross Mall stood, right off of West Anderson Lane near its intersection with Mopac. A Wal-Mart is currently being constructed in the large lot adjacent to the center that includes Dos Batos. Dos Batos was definitely NOT what I expected-- their "Tasty Tex-Mex" slogan on their sign below the name was accurate, but their reference to Tex-Mex had me thinking I would find a place with enchiladas and a dump of beans and rice on a place. It was a bit different, and I think better, than that. The menu (as can be seen on their website) was fairly simple-- offering only about 3 or 4 main menu items (what included essentially grilled soft tacos, tortas, taquitos, a single side item selection (charros beans) and one salad option. The restaurant was a walk-up, counter-order style place. A good place for a quick in and out lunch. The interior of the restaurant was very simple, very bright/white, with a large mural on the right wall of the restaurant as you walk in. The cost seemed a tad high for the "Big Taco" that I ordered, at $7. I ordered a (free) cup of water to go with it to avoid running up my bill even further. I also later learned that all the prices included tax, but I did not notice that as I signed my debit card receipt. Normally I come to grips with what I'm going to spend by looking at the net, before-tax prices on the menu, not when signing my debit card receipt. I told the owner later that even if he clearly puts "TAX INCLUDED" on their menu, he will still probably be battling the perception of high prices. I felt even worse about the price after my food was brought to my table. I opened the bag to find a thin, relatively small "grilled soft taco" (in Taco Bell-comparison language). Once taking a bite into it, however, all my pricing concerns were put aside. The taco was absolutely fabulous - steak grilled over a wood fire grill (evidenced by the firewood rack inside and outside the restaurant), cheese, and avocado inside of a lightly fried tortilla. I was disappointed to find I was still a bit hungry after eating the taco, so I approached the counter once more. One of the owners was there, asked how I liked the meal, and I told him it was great but seemed a bit pricey. It was then that he pointed out the charros beans side item option for an additional $2, and I told him that definitely made the price a bit steep. He offered me a complimentary order of the beans to thank me for my feedback, and so I accepted them and proceeded to eat them. I was disappointed to find they had very little flavor, although admittedly I did order the "regular" charros beans instead of the "hot & spicy" version. All in all, this place has a lot of promise and I really appreciate the owner's resistance to stuffing a shell full of rice, beans, meat, and every ingredient that someone could dream up. I think he has the recipe RIGHT as it delivers a very tasty lunch into your mouth. He should work on slightly expanding and improving his side items, possibly providing them free or at a very low cost in addition to the main items, and he may also want to back out the sales tax out of his prices to reduce the perception that his food is too highly priced. Judging by the food alone I would have to give this place 4 or 5 stars, but given the slightly high prices and lack of selection and pairing/choice of side items, it bumps it down a bit in my mind. I think the place will be successful as more people discover its self-proclaimed "Tasty Tex-Mex" and as the owners tweak their pricing and menu. read more

I had been here a couple of years back and got a taco that I enjoyed, but my experience a couple of days ago was not great. After a long day, I was super hungry so I came in to order a couple of tacos and chips to go. I was one of three people in the place, and was surprised when the girl who took my order brought me a bag just a few minutes later. I walked out, and as I was on my way to my car, the girl came out and said "Wait! that's not your order... sorry." So I came back inside and sat down, where I overheard a woman with her kids at the counter, explaining that she also did not get what she ordered. A manager came over and apologized, and gave her a $10 gift card for the trouble. About 10 minutes later, I was the only person left in the restaurant, and the girl who took my order brought over a bag and said, "Ok, THIS one is yours." So I took it and left. When I got home, guess what? Not what I ordered. A little miffed, I called and they said "oh yeah, we have your food here. Do you want to come get it?" I drove back, traded the food. No apology was made at all. When I got home, my tacos were cold and not great. Did I mention I paid $13 for this experience? You know, I got to thinking, I tend to only have one or two favorites I like at a restaurant anyway, so the fact that Dos Batos doesn't have a big menu doesn't really bother me. It's not like I'm pissed off at P. Terry's for mostly serving hamburgers. What matters is that the few things on the menu are fantastic, and that I don't feel like the low price comes with a compromise of quality. That being said, they have expanded their menu slightly to include some variations and vegetarian options and are doing a "taco of the month". Moving on, here is a short list of fantastic things I have had there recently: - Giant piratas with wood-grilled beef, crema, avocado and cheese (~$5) - Borracho beans (for a penny) - Elotes off the cob (spiced corn with cream, for a freaking penny) - Topo chico with lime juice and cane sugar - Cochinita pibil tacos - Cajetaco, which is goat milk, caramel and pecans in a corn tortilla, and way more awesome than it sounds Everyone I've met who works here is also incredibly friendly and dedicated to what they do. Would you like a taco the size of your head? Yes? then go to Dos Batos. The tacos are large, and crispy, and fairly tasty. Upon reflection the "taco" is more like a Quesadilla than anything and that's not really a bad thing. The decor is minimal, much like the menu. I had a taco and a torta for around $14 and I could not finish both without my guts exploding all over the place. They were definitely generously portioned. When/If I go back I will just get the torta as it was clearly the better of the two. There's not much else to say about Dos Batos. It's worth a try if you like tacos, but if you are looking for variety you should stick with Taco Deli and Torchy's. read more
