First off I loved the friendliness of the person taking my order and the chef. AND they have Jamaica, such a delicious drink!! The dining room was open, pretty large, nicely decorated and clean. I ordered the regular shrimp cilantro taco on corn minus the dressing/sauce because it's made with mayo. The chef threw in some grilled veggies since I wasn't getting any of the sauces. The taco comes with some chips and salsa. The chips were warm and tasty, and the salsa had a good flavor as well. The size of the taco was good however it only had four small to medium sized shrimp in it. Definitely needed at least one more shrimp. I loved that the cheese was melted into the tortilla. However, the carrots on the taco were dry and most likely came from a bag. Overall, a decent meal. And since it came with chips, it was reasonably priced. read more

I don't think i've ever had wood smoked tacos before or since my first visit to Dos Batos. When I first moved to Austin, I lived in South Austin and one day I visited my sister in Allandale and she took me to her favorite taco place. This place! That was 15 years ago and 2 years later I bought a condo around the corner from the restaurant (not because of the tacos but it was a nice perk). Since then I still eat there typically at least once a month cause the prices are reasonable and food is always so fresh. Plus I can walk over from my place. read more

Fast casual place that definitely is worth the money! I've stopped by for a quick lunch after a long camping trip and the quesadilla is massive, and pretty affordable. You go to a counter and order your food where you pickup a number and they will call you. Anyways, for the food, the quesadilla is so good. The crust is so crunchy and the cheese is on point. Honestly, it was a godsend for anyone who loves cheese. There are options to pick additional fillings but you can't go wrong with any of them. The whole meal was hearty and definitely something to enjoy slowly given the portions are huge. Overall, just for the quesadilla I'd give it a 5/5. read more

First off, the place itself is a hole-in-the-wall type of place, a large room with a colorful chalkboard on one side, and a lovely painted mural on the other side. Straight ahead you can see where they cook the food right in front of you. They always have good music playing, which is appreciated. The service is very friendly and courteous, I've always felt welcome. They keep the place very clean; I never have to worry about what I'm sitting in or where I'm putting my arms. The food itself is great! There are meaty options, vegetarian options, good drinks, warm chips, and items are wrapped in foil and placed in paper sacks for those of us on the go. The ingredients always taste fresh and well made. This place feels like a well-kept secret, but for those in the know, it's a fantastic option for when you want something other than burgers or pizza. This is because the best tacos are the simplest ones, with incredibly complex flavors and this is what Dos Batos does best; simple food. The smoky wood-fired tacos here are juicy, tender, and fresh. The wood fired grill technique used here adds the flavor of mesquite to so many components on the menu. Whether it's the grilled peppers or salsa, the grill plays a critical role in all the flavor profiles here. The last go round this is what I had... Shrimp Hybrid Taco- This taco has light melted mozzarella cheese, sliced avocado, woodfired shrimp, onion and bell peppers. We love Dos Batos, and have been recommending it for years. We now live in South Austin, so we don't get to visit as frequently these days. But, the food is consistently prepared well and service is very fast. Today, the Dos Batos staff earned my loyalty forever. We placed a large order of tacos on corn tortillas, which are both delicious and necessary for my family due to food allergies. Unfortunately, after arriving home (30 minute drive) we noticed the entire order was made on flour. Not ideal. I called the restaurant to explain what happened, assuming (best case) they'd offer to refund. However, the manager immediately offered to remake the food and **drive it to our home herself.** I explained this was unnecessary and we lived across town, but she insisted that if we wanted the food instead of a refund she would be happy to bring it to us. This is by far the best service and most gracious thing I've experienced at any restaurant ever. The only thing I wasn't satisfied by was her refusal to accept my tip for the long drive, which is why I'm leaving a biblical-length review here. Tl;dr - support the amazing people at Dos Batos. I cannot understand these reviews. Did our Uber eats driver pick up from some where else cause this was not good and extremely pricy. $12 for a taco! It said it was a big taco, it was not. Maybe they messed up and made us the smaller ones is all I can hope but I am not returning to find out. Also, I don't think these people have ever had a real torta. This was a weird meat in a stale hamburger bun situation. The meat flavor was pretty good but everything else was meh and it the portions were small and it was super expensive. Delicious food! The pirata taco and the chipotlera torta are my favorites. Best tacos in Austin!

Queso was amazing. My food was pretty good, my partner liked her taco too. I wish the beef was a like more tender but I was very impressed with the flavor. The wood fired flavor really helps the taco. Everything here has from scratch too. The atmosphere here is really nice and open. My favorite was probably the shrimp taco. It had some good flavors, but it was a little bland, and the slaw didn't have much flavor as well. The cheese tortilla taco was as expected but I felt like it was bland also. The nachos were pretty good. There wasn't a lot of meat on it, but the other toppings were good. I wasn't a big fan of the smokiness of the Carnitas and I thought the queso was a little bland as well. Lastly, the elote was a little too watery for my taste and I feel like it could've used some lime. they have this hot sauce next to the counter and that sauce is so good. It is not very spicy although there's a sign that says it is but that sauce was probably the best thing out of everything I ate here. This was my first visit to Dos Batos. The wood fired cooking of the food is easy to smell when you arrive. The restaurant is nice and clean with great lighting and plenty of room to sit. I had the pollo pirata, which was good but not great. The charro beans were very good and their chips were very good also. The tacos are pricey around here so a combo with 1 taco, a drink, some chips and charros beans for $12. It was pleasant though and everyone was really nice. The unique thing about these handheld treats is the meats are cooked on a charcoal grill. The flavor is unlike no other. The tortillas are made in house. I opted for the flour and enjoyed the warm lightly toasted shell. The beef and chicken were fantastic. Perfectly cooked and juicy. For some the lack of toppings may be a turnoff as the usual are cheese and avocado. There is no cilantro, onions, or lime, but there is red and green salsa. The green salsa is quite spicy. I've been wanting to try this place for over a year but my wishes have finally come true! Dos Batos is a perfect wish come true.. It's like a combo of smoky bbq + tacos. The prices do seem a little steep (one taco for more than $5!?!) but they are definitely tacos on the bigger end of the spectrum, at least as big as Torchy's tacos. Among the options you can devise an entree for ~$10. I got the chicken hybrid taco and split a side of guac since I wasn't super hungry. It was a little heavy on the cheese but I loved the smokiness of the chicken! The tortilla was alright (I thought it would be more crispy like woodfired pizza crust, but it's just a warm tortilla...). The guac tasted fresh and delicious. Apparently the Ostin Taco (vegetarian option) is a bit lackluster. Meat's where the magic's at. Also, it's pretty good for groups. It's not too crowded and it's casual so it's easy to pull together some tables. read more
