This place is tucked away in strip mall mediocrity, so it's easy to miss. I avoid WalMart like the plague on society that it is, so it's a miracle I even found this place. The tacos are delicious! I've only had the pollo hybrid because once I find something i like, I stick with it. Their tortillas are just to die for, thin goodness. The salsa, is warm and I actually don't know how to describe it, but I love it. It's more expensive than getting two tacos at a taqueria, so I have had to adjust to sticker shock, but I have been several times so it must not be that off putting. Their guac is good, as is the queso. If you're over there and don't want to wait in a dumb line for Hopdoddy or have a real sit down meal at Cover 3, this is a really great option. read more

I want to start with the good stuff: - The tortillas are delicious. Somehow they are thin yet flavorful, quite different from most taco places in town. - The guacamole is average good. I enjoyed it. - Beef Hybrid taco was my favorite and I would probably have it again. - I loved the art on the wall. See the picture below or don't look and get surprised. - the staff is very friendly, they speak Spanish and got our food ready in minutes. - No coffee. I know they are not a breakfast place, but it would have been a nice touch for brunchers like myself. - Too much chips. Probably my fault for ordering guacamole and not mentioning no extra chips are needed. Apparently all servings of tacos come with salsa and pile of chips on a side. - Speaking of salsa, not impressive. - We also asked for 2 waters and those had very strong and strange taste. Maybe just that day the filter was broken, but I could not drink it at all. One last thing, we were trying to order 2 different Hybrid tacos (beef and chicken) but got both beefs. Wow - I love this taco place! I ordered the hybrid tacos, and they tasted amazing! Steak were extremely juicy and tender. The melted cheese went really well with the steak and bell peppers. I really like how they made the tortillas semi-crunchy. Tortillas were slightly crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside. As for the salad, it was just okay. It is pretty expensive for some tacos, but I would say it's definitely worth your money! read more

I did not care for this one bit. I was really excited after reading all of the reviews and I ended up spiting out most of the $25 I spent. It looked and smelled amaizing just something i hated about it. There was a line so I may be alone on this. We ordered one of everything on the menu and my boyfriend is currently out picking up taco cabana. icky no thank you. I've been a patron since they've opened, and the quality hasn't changed. This is my favorite taco place in Austin. Everyone I bring here loves it. My favorites are the Pirata (both chicken and steak), the Mexican corn, and the seasonal Chicken Soup is amazing. Big tacos, I like the crispness of the tortilla. I'm not usually a fan of flour tortillas, but these were good. Two of the tacos I ordered because it had avocado in it, but it was really skimpy so that was a disappointment. I came here because I was craving tacos. It's good, but a bit overpriced for what it is. It's a bougiey torta. The portions are generous and it is good quality, but you can go to a more authentic Mexican restaurant and pay less. I will say that when they say "avocado" it wasn't the usual Austin smashed avocado/pseudo-guacamole. The food was fresh and bun nicely toasted. The pineapple cucumber drink was good. You only get one refill if you opt for it. Service was professional. I did have to wait for a minute when cashier went to the back and the cooks just stared at me. I'm really surprised at some of these low reviews. I thought this place was fantastic. Initially, I was skeptical, because it's around $4-5 for each taco. Whaaat? I went into this thinking they were some regular ol' tacos, but they are not. These tacos are a bit larger, so 2 of them filled me up well. They include some chips too! Highly recommend the Hybrid and Pollo Hybrid. You definitely taste the woodfired taste in the meats and vegetables. I absolutely enjoyed it. Outstanding! I love the tacos. The beef is tender and full of flavor, the chicken is juicy and had great spices, the veggies are grilled to perfection and the charro beans are to die for. The tortillas have that homemade abuela's house tortilla. The cheese is melty and wonderful. Their pineapple cucumber drink is unique and refreshing. Their salsa should be available in bulk! It is amazing. The two down falls of this place are the chips could be better and the price is pretty high for a lunch spot if you're wanting more than one taco. I have always wanted to try this place. I am a big fan of tacos. I love the simplicity of their menu and the fact that everything is fresh. The place was fairly empty and my order was quickly taken. I loved the decor. It was big and bright. I had to laugh at the Cheech and Chong dolls they had on the walls. I did get my food rather fast. I only opted for 1 taco. For $7, it did come with chips and a drink. Their salsa was a tad bit lack luster. I did opt for their green sauce, which they did label as "hot". That salsa had a tad too much heat. The tortilla was homemade, which is a plus. They also used real cheese, which is alway a bit plus in my book. There is a ton of wood in restaurant and I was expecting more of a "smokey" flavor in my taco The meat was rather bland and slightly on the dry side. I expected it to be a little more rare and juicy. I've always avoided this place because it looks so chain-y from the outside but I finally went and was pleasantly surprised. They serve up great tacos on homemade flour tortillas. As the other reviewers all agree, the chicken is good but the steak is better. The meats are both woodfired to perfection and paired with creamy avocado and soft melted cheese that makes the tortilla just slightly crispy on the outside. Never mind the fact that this place is in a strip mall. This is an absolutely first rate regional Mexican establishment. The owners are from Monterey, and what you are getting is wood fired Norteno cooking. There is a limited menu but it is all good stuff. Tacos, and tortas with about five choices for each (beef, chicken vegan etc) When they say your stuff comes right off the wood fire, they aren't kidding. The roll on my torta was so hot from the fresh cooked meat, I could only pick the sandwich up with a napkin to protect my hands from the heat. The meats are great, the bread is great. A very very special shout out to the warm house salsa. This is one of the best salsas in Austin, bar none. I am not sure about their exact trick, but I think there is a ton of finely ground cooked carrot in the salsa. The carrot gives great color, great body, and it is totally cooked down to give a natural vegetable sweetness. Add tomatoes, chilis and spices and you have salsa for the gods. Dos Batos, I love your wood fired hybrid steak/vegie tacos served up fresh on house made flour or corn tortillas, and they keep me coming back for more. There is nothing fancy about this place, it is simply a taco joint serving up some fresh made food in a clean and comfortable setting. You go up to the counter to order, and you are given a number to take to a table and wait. I have tried a variety of things here, but what keeps me coming back are the wood fired tacos. The guacamole while served fresh with nice chunks of avocado, is missing something, and I have had better elsewhere in Austin. The charro beans, were too soupy, and lacked flavor. I prefer the wood fired steak vs. the chicken. They slightly fire the tacos after filling them, which melts the cheese nicely, and slightly hardens the tortilla (giving it a nice quesadilla like affect). The price is about the same per taco as Torchys. For dinner two tacos fills me up, they serve a couple of chips with some of their house made salsa with your order. The house made salsa is tasty, it tastes like it was made from sundried tomatoes and as a nice zesty flavor. The corn tortillas are some of the best I have had, and don't fall apart. I just got swindled into handing over $24 to two gangsters aka Dos Batos. I wanted to make this my new favorite taco shop, but the quality, portions, and pricing really put a bad taste in my mouth. Let's break it down: $8.50 Two Tacos (average size, no "woodfire" taste as claimed, but tasty) $8.50 One Torta (good size, was tasty, would consider this worth the price) $2.50 6oz cup of Elote (runny cream not thick as hoped, tasted like watered down mayo with corn) $2.50 small soda $2.50 Two empanadas (crust was flavorless, overcooked to burnt brown, VERY dry, not enough filling at all probably collateral damage of overcooking) So I'm not sure what all the craze is for this place. Let's be realistic here, this is not a Manuel's where the service, quality of food and ambiance is close to upscale fine dining experience and Manuel's includes sides with the tacos rather than a charge of an additional $2.50 as Dos Batos clearly states on their menu wall. So why is a semi-fast food restaurant comparable to Torchy's charging their patrons as if they are upscale fine dining? Their name lives up to what seems to be their business model "Two Gangsters". By the way, the online menu has different pricing than what I got charged, see the pic of my receipt. I find the food a bit lackluster and it seems to be over priced IMO; I shouldn't be charged $4.25 for an average taco, wood fired or not with no sides. The torta saved this review from getting a one star review. Needless to say, I won't be returning to check out the rest of the menu. I will be avoiding this place and returning to my favorite shop, Taco More where I can get a quality taco for $2. Oh, and a torta at Taco More is only $4.75. Good luck yelpers. read more

ERMAGERD! These tacos were on target. I do not know what's taken me so long to eat here. I always seemed to forget its existence. Thankfully, they have been on my mind since I tried one of their pirata tacos at The Golden Age party. Fiance and I were running around all day. Dinner time rolled around when he suggested tacos and I requested queso. Then I remembered the glorious queso fountain at the party. I demanded we try Dos Batos. I'm so glad we did. It smelled amazing when we walked in. We ordered a full queso and 2 tacos a piece. That queso was amazing. It was perfectly melty with the right amount of spices and smoky flavor. The pirata tacos were simple and flavorful. The chicken pirata taco was like a flavor pinata in my mouth. These were some of the best tacos I've had in town. They made me miss the RGV. read more

Finally decided to give Dos Batos Tacos a shot last week and it was definitely a mixed bag of feels...but mostly good ones. Walked in and the place was jumping with customers, the rich smell of wood fired goodness in the air. Lots of people were in there enjoying lunch time noms, so I was anxious to test it out myself. Their menu is very simple n basic, but man o man are they a bit on the pricey side. I ordered 2 beef tacos and chips n salsa for 2. No drinks..just water. Came out to around $20. The taste was great! Fresh tacos, good tasting meats and fresh tortillas.. on par with any good taqueria or taco shop in the hood. And this is what my brain had trouble processing. For food this good in the hood, you'd pay half the price. And then it hit me.. just like PhoNatic you pay a premium price for the location and convenience. This is a very busy shopping center with lots of prime real estate around so obviously the pricing is going to be a bit higher. They also use angus beef as well, if that matters to you. It's good food. Pricey, but very good. If you absolutely must have tacos and don't wanna venture off into the hood for cheaper pricing this place will do just fine. read more

They just celebrated their 1 year anniversary and I can't believe I haven't eaten there since it's less than a mile away from my office. I ordered To-Go and only waited about 8 minutes for my food. I got the Hybrid tacos: angus top sirloin w/ portobello mushrooms, red onions, bell pepper, avocado & cheese inside a fresh tortilla. Get to the restaurant for pick-up, and they give us the tacos, and the trio with chips. They don't give us the separate queso and chips. Go through multiple requests for the queso and chips, show them the receipt multiple times where we paid for it. They don't seem to understand that we ordered both the trio and chips and the queso and chips. Finally ask that we get refunded for the queso and chips. They don't do that either. The real deal in Mexican Tacos Northern Style (Sonora Style) , just like in Mexico (lived there over 20 years) the meat is grilled over real wood and no gringo style marinade added. I've been in constant search all over Austin for the real stuff till now, I tried dozens of taco trailers and several restaurants too and this is the most amazing Carne Asada taco I've ever had in the States. I wonder why it took so long?, its so easy to achieve; wood or carbon grill, thin cut meat with no mumbo jumbo marinades on the meat and that's it. The Only downside is the salsa tastes like ketchup but I'll forgive them since the carne is superb. Ohh and the Zapata Mural is just awesome!!! read more

Ambience - big open dining room that feels kind of empty. There are several white tables and chairs and the main colors is white. The menu is a beautiful chalk mural that spans an entire way. On the back end of the lobby is a giant painting of a samurai and a bandit. Not sure the reasoning of those two but maybe it's a fusion thing. The bottoms of the walls have wooden logs that support the wood fired claim to fame. Menu - menu is actually pretty small. That's not necessarily a bad thing thou. There is 5 tacos and 5 tostadas, a few salads and then a small variety of sides and whatnot. Their claim to fame is wood fired meats. Nice take for a taco joint. However there is basically only 3 choices for you to choose. Either beef, chicken or veggie taco. They do have 2 other tacos that they call a "fusion" but it is just adding the veggie taco to either the chicken or beef taco. Come on guys, that's not fusion, that's just putting veggies on a Taco. Anyways, the only thing that comes in the meat tacos is the meat, cheese and a small slice of avocado. Seriously? Where is the cilantro, lime, lettuce, tomatoes or onion? But I guess alot of guests dont like veggies so that may be the reasoning of only having meat and cheese. And if someone wants veggies then get a fake fusion. Anyways, menu is kind of strange and a little disheartening especially since this place is expensive as f@$% for a taco joint. Each taco is almost $6. Damn money sunny. How hard is it to say Hi or we will be right with you. During my stay there I watched him and you could clearly tell he did not want to be there. So the service was opposite sides of the scale, my advice is that when you have an open kitchen like that, to make sure everyone knows how to use proper body language. But I'm sure there is a reason they do that. My tacos also came also came with a few chips and salsa. I try the salsa first and my oh my this was a huge disrespect to the culture. So the meats were actually really good but unfortunately I didn't get to taste much of it. The amount of cheese they put completely overwhelmed everything else in the taco. I actually didnt even finish my 2nd taco because halfway thru i could taste was tortilla and cheese. The tortilla is of average size but the amount of stuff they put in the taco is very sad. So between the fake salsa and the chewy cheese tacos, I left unimpressed and let down. There are far to many taco joints to settle for this. Overall - the biggest let down or problem is that for high price I paid was not equal to the quality of what I got. $6 for a taco is expensive and then for it barely have any meat, overwhelming amount of cheese and very small slice of avocado? Come on, you can do better than that. I guess maybe I ordered wrong or something because they have been around for almost 8 years. But I dont see the appeal and honestly felt like I got ripped off. My meal was $15!!!!! And nothing about the food was even ok, aside from the meat, but I couldn't taste much of that due to the cheese. Another taco joint....no big deal...well this is a big deal. Wood Fired Tacos, Amazing!! The tacos were super fresh, hot and stuffed to the brim with the most wonderful tender meat and yummy cheese. Keeping it honest I wasn't that impressed with their carnitas, I thought it was a little bland, but maybe I just suck and have poor taste! Its a little expensive than your average taco place, but its not your average taco place. You can tell they use quality product and take pride in prouducing something delicious! I only came here once because when I did I ordered lunch and it wound up being only one big taco for about $8 and the taco was only OK. The tortilla was thick and folded in half over the filling almost more like a gyro or roti than a taco. The meat was a bit under-seasoned and it could have used many more toppings.
