Had a lunch date with my husband one day and decided to check out this place. The hubby loves Tex-Mex, Mexican and TACOS. I had seen the positive reviews on Yelp and decided to give this place a go. It is located in a strip mall with Walmart on Anderson Ln. It was very clean inside - definitely had a fast food/Chipotle kind of feel to it. A place where you dine and dash....not a hang out. The tacos were good, but I feel the price point is off. I thought they were overpriced. My husband and I got 2 tacos, 2 taquitos and one drink and it was $24. YIKES! It was good and we'll likely be back, but it won't be often. There are many other places I would rather eat at for $24. read more

Sparse, good, overpriced, needs improvement. The pirata was good but for a large taco, with just salsa, meat, and cheese, over $7 with tax is too much. The menu with only the pirata, a beef taco, a veggie taco, a torta, and a monthly special taco is very limited especially when the extent of toppings is cheese or avocado. A year ago, people would say they were sorry for me when I mentioned that my apartment is right next door to the "abomination" that would soon be the Northcross Wal-Mart shopping center. Now, I am thrilled to live by so many awesome business' and more to come that are in this area. My dogs' beloved Zoom Room, a yogurt shop and an Elevation Burger in the works and of course, the delicious tacos @ Dos Batos. These wood fire tacos are GOOD. Personally, I love the Ostin which is just bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and cheese, but the wood fire gives it such a delicious smoky flavor. My bf is a fan, like so many reviews before this, of the PIrata which I agree is tasty. *I just finished eating their Feb. taco of the month, which is two corn tacos with carnitas and a spicy sauce topped with cilantro and onions... ohh maah gawwwddd it was so good. They also have a rotating desert each month, I didn't get the one listed today (although it sounded good) but, the last one I got was something like goat milk, carmel & nuts in a corn tortilla-- sounds bizarre right? DELICIOUS! I inquired today about the breakfast tacos, the girl working mentioned they've had them about a month & 1/2 and admitted they are still working out some kinks with that. I've eaten here several times and have tried the majority of the menu. It's ok. I've definitely had way better. Very expensive for what you get, too. The staff could sharpen their ability to be professional. For example, the last time I went in, the guy who rang us up took a personal phone call in front of us while we were ordering and then spent the rest of the time talking about how he was about to leave for Vegas and go see a fight. He apologized, then added how he had to take that call because he needed to borrow $300 for a friend to go on the trip. That's great and all, but I don't need to know that as a customer. I just went there this evening with my boyfriend, we've been on a torta quest throughout Austin. We continue to try lots of places, have found some good places, but are looking for the best. The thing that Dos Batos does really well, in terms of their tortas, are the rolls they use. They're so incredibly soft and fresh-tasting. The inside ingredients were good, if a little mild. We also tried the regular size Hybrid taco. First of all, it was HUGE. I'm a girl with a fairly sizable appetite, and one completely filled me up. I really liked the way it was cooked, and the taste was pleasant. Again, a little mild though. I was hoping for some more pronounced flavors. Not bad, though. Not bad at all. Next time I go, I will definitely get the torta, as I felt that it really outshone the taco. read more

Tacos were great, meat was smokey and flavorful. The chips and guac were both tasty with actual pieces of avocado instead of an over processed mass. The salsa was yummy, all around great taco! My wife had the veggie with portobello mushrooms and peppers which she consumed and declared very good. I'll be eating here again. I love the variety that tacos can provide and the smokiness of the meat is key. Very flavorful. I do wish I could find corn tortillas of the size they use in flour. Usually taco shops give you two corn tortillas and the corn tend to tear. I'm sure you can make thicker corn tortillas that are larger but in a pinch flour will do. The food is tasty, but generally overpriced for what you get. The service, even for a counter-service style restaurant, is very poor. The first visit was fine, but the last three we've had problems getting the food ordered correctly , and the last time they got pissy about it: blamed me for not ordering correctly, and then brought a copy of the original receipt to the table to show that was my fault that the counter person couldn't take the order correctly. It was by pure chance that I came to eat at Dos Batos on a Sunday afternoon. I was out shopping in Allandale and wanted to try something new other than my usual go-to burrito place. As I walked in, I surveyed the atmosphere: Nice modern decor with a classic but hip Emiliano Zapata mural. "Ok, this'll be dope," I thought to myself as I assessed the menu, which touted "homemade" and "fresh" tortillas. Nevertheless, I learned not to place such high expectations from a cartoon Zapata ever again. So, I had been craving tortas for a very long time. My stomach was rumbling and I ordered the Polloqueso and a half order of chips and salsa. I waited 5 minutes in the line with only one other person ahead of me. I looked to see if there were any tortilla makers...none in plain sight. When my meal came out, I was immediately disappointed. Apparently the torta already came with a side order of chips and salsa. No where did they specify this anywhere on the menu and I realized I had just wasted $2.50. I wouldn't have complained about this if the salsa were actually decent. Rather, it tasted like warm and watery tomato sauce. And no flavorful spice whatsoever. As for the torta, it tasted like if McDonalds had adapted Mexican food into their menu. From my understanding, tortas usually have queso fresco...not Velveeta. What kind of restaurant uses Velveeta/Cheez Whiz? Apparently Dos Batos. I must say that the highlight of this experience was jamming out to a very nice remix of Jennifer Lopez's "Waiting for Tonight" in the bathroom. I was able to dance to the whole song without anybody interrupting me. But then again, I could have done that in the comfort of my own home. read more

We used to come here a lot and used to love it but we moved and haven't been back for 1+ year. During our recent time back we noticed the prices have significantly increased, over $6/taco! I would say they are smaller than torchys tacos. Unsure if they changed owners but the flavor was bland and the meat was dry. We got the steak, brisket, fish and chicken. So I was able to hit up this place recently and really it's a gem. I know it's going to be next door to the new Wal-Mart on Anderson Lane, and hopefully doesn't get some of the WalMart creates hovering around because it smells good from the outside. The wood-firing of the meat really gives the interior an nice aroma, I must say the food was good, I enjoyed the torta and the hass, the interior is pretty snazzy, and it doesn't get too loud with a large crowd in there. It's really a place I didn't expect much of and was really surprised when I visited it. I gave it four out of five stars because I want to confirm my feelings for it on another trip. The food is good but a bit pricey. You get the atmosphere of an upgraded food truck. We walked in an the place was empty at lunch time. I wasn't sure this was going to end well but we were up for trying something new. I ordered the pollo pirata and the hybrid both on corn tortillas. The corn tortillas were fresh and tasty. The chicken and steak are both very tasty. Each taco includes a perfect slice of avocado in them. They are also served with a side of chips and roasted salsa. The salsa had a nice kick without being too spicy for those sensitive to heat. I'd return but not making it a daily habit just because it's price prohibitive. read more

I won't mention the reason I was over at Northcross other than to say that my Mom dragged me there. I personally spent minimal time and no money in the location that shall not be named. When we arrived in the parking lot, I noticed Dos Batos across the way. My curiosity was aroused, so we went there for lunch. It sure smelled good when we walked in the door! The place is rather minimally furnished, with plain but sturdy white chairs and plain (and possibly not so sturdy) white tables. I liked the touch of flowers on the tables. I can see the comparison to Chipotle decor with the corrugated metal. I appreciated the acoustic drop ceiling, too - with such a cavernous space, it could have been VERY loud in there, even with just a few people. The artwork on the walls was - unexpected. I was a bit underwhelmed by the menu choices - not a lot of variety. You can have beef - the name of the taco you get depends on what (if anything) you choose to have with your beef - or pork in the Taco of the Month. Or a single vegetarian option. Mom and I each got a Pirata and a cup of "soup" for 1 cent. Mom got tea, I got water. It seemed a bit on the expensive side to me (but Mom was paying, so I didn't have room to complain). The beef was tasty, with a nice smoky flavor to it. It could possibly have been more tender, and I did come across some very fatty and very gristly bits. The avocado was a nice addition, and although I know there was cheese in there, I didn't really taste it. The warm salsa that was delivered with the tacos added a nice touch. The toasted tortilla was also good. The beans were, well, they were okay. A little too much chorizo for me, I think, and a touch too heavy on the pepper. All in all, it was a satisfying meal. I have to say, I have been eyeing up Dos Batos for a while. I love a good taco... Now with that being said, an $8 taco you have to thrill me. Dos Batos' was far from thrilling. I went during the lunch rush and needed to be somewhere else within the hour. I ordered the portbello, "Ostin" taco. I was hungry so I went for the large. It was almost filling- but not $8 filling. At least serve it with a few chips. You've already provided the salsa. My mushrooms had a great flavor but they were still not cooked all the way through. Honestly, I would have complained then and there for a new taco but I was on a time restraint. (For the record, very rarely do I send something back to the kitchen.) As we got there the place gave us a bad feeling about the food. We ordered nachos and since they were pretty dry we had to pay extra for more cheese. Tacos weren't that good. Great Tacos. The side of beans you can order are awesome. Intensely flavored, I could eat just those, but of course I wouldn't because their Tacos are some of the best in Austin. The dining area is a bit boring, but your not there to admire the dining room, your there to eat good mexican tacos. While super clean, the dining area is very minimal, which I kinda like. The tables have little vases with a flower in them. Its cute, though somewhat boring, but overall a nice touch. This is not your Tex Mex joint, and thank god it isn't, we don't need anymore of those fake mexican places in Austin. This is authentic mexican food, a rare thing in Austin, and worth a visit unless your looking for velveeta covered tamales and fried avocados. read more

Interesting place, def tucked away and hidden. The place is pretty unique they have a huge chalkboard used as their menu but they only have 4 items they really serve. steak taco (signature item) tora (Pork sandwich) veggie taco corn soup ok 5 items... but still the board is huge. anyways on to the food. i ordered the pork taco they had 'i guess the taco of the month' and a stake taco (pirata) I def. enjoyed my pork taco it was awesome! Great flaovr and tasty salsa. the corn was pretty good too, (my gf ordered that). it's pretty much corn mixed w/ sour cream/ spice and mixed up.. Good food, blah ambiance, high prices I'll start off by saying the food is good. We got the pirata wood-fired grill tacos - the large size. They are good, but they are certainly not worth $8. You can get something that tastes even better at Chipotle for $6.50. The beef is soft, tastes great and smoked and is sliced into little chunks. The cheese is tasty, and the avocado is fresh. But that's about all that was on the taco... I put some salsa on it, which was a good addition. It's smoky and has a strong, deep flavor. The tortilla is substantial enough to keep the taco from falling apart, but it's nothing special. The chips and queso are excellent. Great chips - crisp and a good taste, and the queso is excellent - spices are wonderful and high quality ingredients make it worth getting. The menu is quite a bit more varied than Chipotle, which might keep you coming back more often (if you can afford it). The ambiance is about as blah as you can get. There are some paintings on the wall, but you sit in cheap seats and eat at cheap tables. There's not a lot of decoration, and it actually feels even cheaper than a Chipotle (which I imagine in their primary competition). Overall, it's just very sterile, and the food doesn't quite make up for it. The service is fine, but once you order at the counter, you have very little interaction with them. They're friendly enough though. Bathroom are clean, and that's definitely a good thing. Nothing worse than gross bathrooms at a Mexican restaurant. Again, good food but not great, and two dinners here should not cost $33. You can get better for far less. read more

We've been here a few times already during lunch. It's pretty tasty and a little more unique than the typical tacos you'd find in Austin. What keeps me coming back though is the warm salsa. It's ridiculously good and just the right amount of spiciness. The sides (corn, beans) are mediocre but I always skip that part anyway. However, when they first opened you had the option between a large taco or a small taco (they only have one size now) and rather than regular ol' mushrooms, they used portobello. They even had a small toppings bar with cilantro, lime, pico de gallo, different hot sauces, etc. I guess in an effort to scale back, they got rid of the options. Bummer. read more

Reposting this: My new favorite taco place outside of the Valley. If you've ever been to Taqueria El Zarape in the Valley, this is the closest thing we've had that's here in Austin. SOOOOOO good. We're already planning how many times a week we should go. On top of that, the staff are super friendly and even offered us a free dessert. The taco pirata and torta con carnitas were amazing. I saw that someone said their beans are watery, but this is how they serve them in south Texas - like a soup - and for only 1 cent more, it can't be beat. The prices are just right because their portions are pretty large. You won't go home hungry. I'm so excited that this place is close to home - it's about time north central represented with its own taco joint to tout. read more

My boyfriend has an absolute love for tacos. This guy could eat a taco for every meal and be as happy as a Kobe beef cow while getting their daily massage! In his constant search for new tacos, we discovered this place. They have a very small menu, but what they do have is delish! I always go with a Pirata taco ( steak, sea salt, cheese, and sliced avocado ) holy moly it's heaven. No really try it. And if that's not enough food for you, try their pinto beans. This lunch prompted me to post my FIRST review on Yelp - I've been greedy in the past and have just "used" reviews in the past without reciprocating and posting my own thoughts. Today's lunch prompted me to get off the bench and post... My review: go to Dos Batos if you like INCREDIBLY BLAND and uninteresting food. I ordered the "Pirata" which is their supposed specialty and was incredibly disappointed. Their whole shtick is using just Angus beef, NO spices and Mesquite wood to get the job done. Well....it delivers what you'd expect. An incredibly bland taco. What's the point of using the Mesquite to have a "wood-fired" taco if you're not going to use the Mesquite to smoke them? I agree w/ the one posting that mentions that you smell like you leave a campfire and get NONE of the benefit of using the Mesquite. Also...their Pirata Soup is awful. The "bacon" in it is cut up hot dogs. I wish I was kidding, but am not. I'm incredibly disappointed in this place and honestly baffled by their good/above-average rating. Great tacos, open atmosphere with spacious seating, and good music! Food was pretty good. I ordered the piratas, which had steak that was well marinated and not over cooked, and the tortillas tasted homemade. The queso and chips were good as well. The salsa was warm and sort of watery, wish it was more spicy and less runny. Otherwise, everything was great. Definitely will return. Also currently waiting for their liquor license, so we were unable to get alcoholic beverages. read more

Wow! We had heard about this restaurant, but had not had time to visit. It is worth it. You have to try the Pirata! The flour tortilla is cooked fresh, not heated up when you arrive. The meat is wood broiled and chopped up. The avocado is fresh, and the cheese is delicious. The salsa is also made fresh and hot (temperature), not cold like you get at other places. If they wanted to build a restaurant around a single item, the Pirata would be it. I don't know why so many people complain about a lack of items. I prefer they do one or two and do them GREAT, and they do. I will try the Torta next time, but for now, the Pirata is definitely worth the trip. read more

The concept itself seems interesting; woodfired tacos should provide for a distinct culinary experience, reminding one of the cold nights in cabins deep in the woods, cooking tacos around a warm fireplace. Something I think we can all relate to. Then why were the tacos so bland? Very little of the smoky taste that one would expect to be imparted from the burning logs seems to make it's way in to the taco ingredients, leaving a blandly flavored taco with just too little variety going on to offer much flavor. The salsa that could offer some saving grace of taste is incredibly runny (and also bland itself) and applying it to the tacos turns them into sad weeping messes. Lastly, the price you pay for what you get seems a little high. Long story short is that despite the interesting concept, Dos Batos fails to deliver in a city already awash in more than its fair share of amazing taco options. read more

I admit, when I spied Dos Batos in the already bizarre Northcross WalMart shopping center, I was suspicious how a restaurant in that location with that odd of a name (at least to this latina-but-not-a-Mexicana) could be very good. However, my husband and I were on the lookout for a cheap-ish but tasty meal in the area, and decided to give it a go. It was the 'woodfired' part that hooked us. The short of it: So very glad we gave it a go! Delicious, filling, quality, fresh tacos and what is perhaps my favorite salsa ever! We most definitely be back and hope to make it one of our regular neighborhood haunts. The long of it: The menu is simple with several appealing options for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. We ended up ordering one Pirata and one Ostin each with a side of chips and salsa to share. I think my favorite thing about this place (aside from the salsa, which I'll get to in a bit), was its simplicity. Here are delicious tacos that taste like beef and fresh cheese with creamy avocado and NOT some big greasy pile of mess like at many taco joints. You can actually have tacos and not feel like you just downed a quart of grease! It's great! Plus it just has that homey authentic taste to it. Loved the salsa! I am generally not a salsa lover. I skip it at almost every place, with the exception of Torchy's and the creamy jalapeño at Chuy's, because most places just make salsa that tastes like spicy acid to me. Or its a bunch of gross tomatoes sitting around waiting for someone to call it 'pico.' This salsa, however, had a wonderful smoky, woody, spicy red pepper flavor to it with a nice kick -- enough heat for me feel my sinuses clearing up a bit, but not so spicy I couldn't taste my food. We finished off our salsa order as well as the little cups that came with our tacos, which was a salsa first for me. Seriously. Staff and service was super friendly and fast with the food and water refills (I don't do cokes anymore, wasn't in a beer mood, and didn't notice they had Topo Chico until after we had paid). Decor is Ikea heavy, and a bit confusing with the samurai and bandalero mural, but it's overall kinda charming. This feels like a joint run by two regular who could be totally be your friends who just happen to run a restaurant. And for those who complain about the price, I say it's obvious your paying for the quality of ingredients and the woodfire process. My two small tacos were twice as big as I expected, and you bet I left stuffed. I'd say it's comparable in price places like Freebird's or Chipotle, but FAR better in quality. Like, light years. The price is worth it, friends. It's the real deal. Only 4 stars for now since I have so much more to try there. Can't wait to go back for more! read more

Originally, I was kind of unimpressed with the decor...but like most awesome Asian restaurants, the decor and the food are almost inversely related. I got the "hybrid" here and it was amazing.
