As soon as we walked in, the waiters just ignored us. We had to find our way around to get a table. Thanks to a customer we found a waiter that took care of us. Unfortunately she told us we have 20 minutes . We were not even done with our food and the waitress brought the check and didn't even wait for us to finish to tell us we have to pay. OK last update. I experienced the worst food poisoning I've ever had after eating a chicken fajita at Dos Amigos. My father was visiting from out of town, and one night we ate here. He and I had the same thing, and both of us got sick. Brutally sick. I called a few days later to speak with the manager and report the tainted food. I never got a call back. Too bad - I really dug this place. Service is still relatively prompt and friendly, but the food quality has really slipped. You couldn't pay me to eat here again. read more

I seem to be continually disappointed with Mexican restaurants in north west Connecticut, and Dos Amigos continues the trend. Which is kind of sad because it has a lot of promise. I ordered something simple, Tacos Rancheros: two tacos, beans and rice. For some reason, the grilled chicken was served in a spicy barbecue sauce. I asked about it and was told it's the fajitas sauce. Granted, that's a bit like having scrambled egg gravy or adding a crunchy rice topping to spaghetti and meatballs (err, no, there's no such thing. Well, not that you'd probably want to eat, anyway.) The rest of the meal was fair and kind of middling, with canned beans and bland shredded cheddar/Jack. I am not terribly sure why they charged a dollar more for soft tortillas. It's too bad, really, because I'm sure the folks in Torrington would love to have honest Mexican food. I wish I could take even one of the fair taqarias from around here and have them cook for just one night there. Folks would love flavorful grilled meats served with nothing but cilantro and diced onion, with fresh salsa and maybe some queso fresco tossed on top. Sadly, that's just not going to happen. Basically, if you do go, don't set you expectations high, and for the love of pollo con arroz, ask them to not include the barbecue sauce. read more

Came across Dos Amigos while traveling thru Torrington and I was drawn by the amount of cars I'm the parking lot. This place is a good Mexican restaurant, Good food, good service and great value. Try the ghost pepper sauce it will have you speaking mexican it's so HOT. The Chiles Relleros were very good, the beef and enchilada were tasty. Wash all this down with a couple of Dos Equis and you will feel like the most interesting Man the world. read more

Good Mexican food is hard to find in the NWC and the southern Berkshires; in yesteryears and whenever I'm in CT to visit my parents, we always go to Señor Pancho's down in Litchfield. Still, in a pinch and to switch things up a little bit, Dos Amigos really provides a viable option for tasty and filling Tex-Mex. The menu is full of your typical burrito / taco / enchilada / flauta / chimichanga fair, plus various specials and reasonably priced desserts (I did not recall seeing anything more expensive than $6). Their were various special entrees, and all combination platters came with refried beans, yellow rice, plus guacamole, pica de gallo, and / or sour cream. Speaking from experience, their cheese enchiladas are divine: think a block of cheese covered in a sheet of corn tortilla so microscopically thin that you question its existence, covered in another sheet of melty, gooey greasy cheese...I almost passed out from happiness reminiscing about it as I typed the preceding statement. *drool* They have $6.11 frozen margaritas. Odd price. That makes me giggle. Their major flaw is their parking situation. Located on East Main Street on "The Hill from Hell", if you are not able to swipe one of their fifteen parking spots, you are really out of luck. I am definitely a Señor Pancho's fan. There is no doubt about that. I have gotten delightfully and willingly nauseous over their cheese enchiladas and frozen strawberry margaritas like anyone that's grown up in Northwestern Connecticut. Still, sometimes that drive down to Litchfield is a bit too far, and with reasonable prices, a comfortable dining space, and quick and friendly service, Dos Amigos can easily fill that chimichanga-shaped hole in your stomach in a hot minute. Of note: If you order the flaming fried ice cream, don't blow out the flame. Let the flame burn off on its own. Otherwise, you get a mouthful of ice cream, fried dough, and alcohol so strong, you'll be lucky if a teaspoon of it doesn't make you blind. *ahem* read more

I live in CT but far from Torrington. I didn't have high hopes for this place. But in a desperate situation decided to check it out. I give 2 stars instead of one because their menu actually had some diversity apart from the typical gringo-mexican restaurant. It wasn't overpriced for lunch, with large portions. Unfortunately large portions of crap. The food, how unfortunate. Was BARELY edible, at best. (But not the carnitas which looked and smelled like dogfood. Not the chili, which had some odd flavor i cant pinpoint that made it inedible. And I dont know how someone can make rice&beans taste so bad?.) Some of the other dishes were edible although tasted like someone who doesnt know how to cook mexican food just started working there. Sorry to say but it was pretty bad. After slipping in food quality a while back, it seems they've recovered. The last time I ate here there was a definite increase in the quality of food. The salsa usually tastes different each time, but I always like it. I walked into this establishment looking for an authentic Mexican cuisine, boy was I disappointed the waiting staff wasn't bad the food is what was horrid. I ordered a grande chicken quesadilla with the thought in mind that I've never had a bad quesadilla but that would soon be changed. The quesadilla itself was super soggy and greasy almost inedible but the chicken inside was even worse the chicken had the color of canned tuna with the taste of a salt lick, with these two combinations in one it was a recipe for disaster. I had a hanker'n for Mexican food. So I decided to go to Torrington. I heard about this place and away we went. Arrived at around 1 and were promptly and congenially greeted at the door. We felt welcome and chose a booth in the comfy environs of unmistakeable Mexican decor. Our drinks were served readily and were delish. Frozen mango Margarita and Summer Spritzer were perfect for the moment. Then. Came the whopper. We both had steak with Gumba sauce and shrimp. Yellow rice and black beans. This dish I'd never heard of before so I was hesitant at first. Well. The kitchen hit it OUT of the park. Home run for Dos Amigos. For my birthday dinner (7 people) we decided to go to Dos Amigos in Torrington CT. We arrived around 630p- 645p, it was dark, young staff ( not very welcoming). The staff seemed annoyed that we had such a large group, the waitress never told us her name, she walked by us several times before making a drink order. around 7:15p we ordered drinks, around 7:30 they arrived!! the young girls where hanging by the register, chatting about whatever IDK. The waitress came to take our order, 2 apps ( 1 soup, 2 bowls of Queso cheese for the chips) the chip they first brought out were really stale, no salt and the salsa was really spicy and watery!! 3 of us order chicken rice bowls with Pico de Gallo with shredded chicken.. The Pico was filed with hot red chili flakes ( must have ran out of jalapeno) I can take heat, but this was really spicy, inedible!! Both my wife and I said something to our server, she said " I'll let your waitress know" we received an eye roll and never ANY CHECK UP" Dump and run... no bill adjustments, NOTHING!! I have eaten here before and tolerated the fact that this place is either HIT or MISS!! After spending 154.00 dollars on food, leaving hungry, I went to Taco bell up the road and had a better rice bowl than Dos Amigos!!! Very disappointed, we will not be returning to this place... Dos' dining room was busy when we arrived, but we were seated promptly. Service was great, despite the crowd. Salsa was excellent. The cheese dip was yellow queso and a little too spicy for me. Chips weren't the house made kind that I usually enjoy at Mexican joints, but they were an okay way to get the stuff into your mouth. Been hearing rave reviews of the shrimp quesadilla grande, and it came out to my friend looking tasty, so I'll have to head back and give it a shot sometime. The remaining two of us got fajita combos - steak and pork for me, steak and chicken for him. Fajitas come with your choice of three of the following: rice, refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce topped with pico de gallo. I had the rice, beans and sour cream. The rice was generic and lackluster, which is one of the things that brings this review down to 3 instead of 4 stars. The beans were beans, nothing special there. Sour cream actually had what I think was white pepper in it, crema fresca style I guess? For the price ($15.95) I think they could include all of the above sides with the fajitas, like most other restaurants. The meat and veg in the fajita platters were excellent, and the sauce they were cooked in was incredibly delicious. Happy hour specials looked enticing, so we'll probably check out the bar next time. I read in the drink menu that they make their margaritas by the gallon to keep up with "demand". I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. read more

Been here several times. Food is always hot. More like commercial Mexican, but if you need a Mexican fix this place should do the trick. May not have rated as high if in a city like Vegas, but for the area, this place is definitely a 4 star for food quality and service. The service...awesome. They are friendly, fast, and know the locals by name. Margaritas are awesome here, so if you drink give them a try. Will also combine the flavors if you request...we tried mango banana and liked them a lot. Also, the clams appetizer is very good. Do yourself a favor, and order one per person...you more than likely won't want to share. My husband's had the tacos twice and will probably continue to order them when we eat up that way. I like the pulled chix chimi...and it's enough to share so bring a friend! Dos Amigos recently opened a Bristol location, having a restaurant in Torrington already. My wife and I stopped in last night to see what it was like and how it added in to the recent changes in Bristol's entertaining landscape. I'm not sure if it was recently-opened jitters or shaking out the bugs of a new staff but the service was pretty lackluster. We ordered the guacamole appetizer which was good, but not amazing. The complimentary salsa and chips is probably the better meal starter overall. I ordered an enchilada combination plate - one chicken, one beef. The portions were good, and each dinner plate came with a choice of three sides so make sure you come when you're either hungry or expecting to share. The beef overall had a better flavor than the chicken, but both were ok and priced fairly. The thing that really stopped this place from being better was the service. It took several minutes to get drinks delivered to our table when we first sat down and every time the waiter mentioned that he would be right back or would be bringing something it was another very long pause in the meal. Overall, I intend to head back once more toward the end of the month and see if they've gotten more into the swing of things but as it stands right now there are too many other, better Mexican choices within ten to fifteen minutes for me to give Dos Amigos a recommendation. read more

Came here for lunch since we were in the area looking at houses. I ordered 2 tacos of the lunch menu and my husband had the carne asada lunch sandwich. Tortilla chips and salsa were good. My tacos were good, and my husband enjoyed his sandwich, just said the meat was a bit tough. The rice and beans were average, rice seemed to be instant or pre made, but def not fresh from scratch. Been to MANY Mexican restaurants and this place holds up pretty good! Guacamole was very good and seasoned just right. Salsa is just right with a nice kick. I grew up in the Southwest where you can find good Mexican food everywhere. Finding authentically good Mexican restaurants in New England has been difficult. I've tried Dos Amigos a couple times now and I've come to the conclusion the food is consistently bland. The refried beans taste as though they are from a can. The rice is a bit better, but still lack flavor. The other various dishes I've had are very bland, lacking the spices and flavor of traditional Mexican food. I ordered tamales and they were out. The food at Dos Amigos will fill your stomach, but if you've been to Mexico or to restaurants in the Southwest where there is a strong presence of people from Mexico, and you enjoyed the food, you will be disappointed by Dos Amigos. read more

The shrimp tacos are phenomenal. I probably go here once a week and the only thing I get is the shrimp tacos. I've had other appetizers and bites of some other stuff. It's all good, but I can't eat there without getting those tacos. The shrimp is wild caught not farm raised. The owner is friendly and his children are the waitresses. They're all super nice. I live right next to puerto Vallarta, but will drive 30 minutes out of my way to eat here instead. My favorite Mexican restaurant! Ohhh and their drinks are amazing. We were on our way back from that lousy sundown mountain ski slope in new Hartford. I didn't look at the menu I just ordered some things. I had an ok sampler platter it could have had a better assortment but then again I didn`t look at the menu because stupid me left my glasses in the car. There are some hispanic people working there that can actually make the food better but again I assume their hands are tied because the owner doesn't want to put any kind of money into a better food product for the customer. I did see that every person for the last two hours ordered chicken or steak fajitas. I assume that this is because its almost impossible to screw that up and the portions appeared large but then again I didn't have that. The scallop and shrimp inchilladas (misspelled) with the rice and beans were good though. At least someone is trying to do Mexican food in the area and not another pizza joint. Didn`t see the kitchen and I probably don`t want to. Didn`t get sick so I guess that`s a good thing. Probably won`t go back unless I cant find a better Mexican place that's close. We travel around the U.S. and have tried Mexican food in many different places; Dos Amigos' food is as good as -- or better than -- any other restaurant we've tried. If anyone knows me I love Mexican food. Now it's hard enough getting good Mexican food outsite of Texas but I think Dos Amigos does a very nice job. The service has always been friendly and prompt. Normally when I go there I stick to what I like. I get the Nachos for a start I think they're good, maybe not amazing but i always enjoy them. For my main course I stick with my chicken burrito. I love it, the whole meal is a great portion and I always have it in mind when we decide to go out for a dinner. The drinks are good. oddly priced but I do find them enjoyable. The cantina they have is nice, my fried and I go once in awhile to snack on nachos and get some drinks. The decor is typical mexican flare. All in all it's a very well-established Mexican place in NWCT. Parking is bad however. Because if you go on a crowded night people will park behind you and then you can't get out...it's a pain. Their food is very good basic Mexican style but not 5 star. The complimentary salsa with chips seem it came from a can. Not fresh as other Tex-Mex places in CT. Hubby and I decided to grab some take-out because our 2-year-old was with us and feeling especially peppered up on fruit juice. First off, I was confused as to where I needed to go to order. I was told the folks behind the bar could help. I stood there wearing my most imploring expression for almost ten minutes. Two waitresses zipped past, eyes aimed at the ground and chirped "hello". So they were politely ignoring me. Ultimately, I grabbed a menu and plugged the number into my phone, called for take-out from the parking lot. They told me it would take 25 minutes for the order to be ready. We went to the nearby Dollar Tree, bought a few things and got some fresh air by walking around the parking lot there. Half an hour later when I had returned to pick up our order, my waitress told me it would be a few more minutes. Ten minutes later a waiter brought out my bag of food and I was on my way. Forty minutes for dinner... okay, maybe I should have expected that on a Saturday, but I was still unhappy about it. Now on to the food itself. Yeah. It was TERRIBLE. Hubby ordered a shredded beef burrito which came with "rice and beans" and a cheese enchilada on the side. For some unknown reason his rice was a bizarre shade of lightening bolt yellow and it was littered with peas and carrots. The beans were a lukewarm pile of brownish sludge that congealed as soon as air touched it and seemed to grow more and more bitter with each bite. I had the Dos Amigos Burrito (scallops and shrimp inside of a spinach tortilla). It was just a huge soggy log of disappointment. It was bland and spongy. My rice was stale and for some reason it was white. My beans were identical to the sludge my hubby received. We paid almost $40 bucks for the meal, but we learned a valuable lesson.
