3.5 stars. This Mexican restaurant is located on the second floor of a brick building. It had its own parking lot shared with other businesses. There's even a rooftop. The decor was clean and inviting. Unfortunately, the place is not handicap accessible and there is no elevator. We were able to carry the baby carriage up; we also used it as a high chair since they didn't have any. Other than that, the service was excellent. I started off with Mexican corn ($8.75); it had mayo and cotija cheese on it. This was good but it was missing the spice element which would normally be tajin. I had to try out their house margarita because tacos and margaritas go hand in hand. The margarita was good but on the smaller side for the price ($13.75). For my entree, I chose the pick three tacos option ($14.75); they offered spicy green salsa for the tacos: Pollo asado: grilled chicken/onion/cilantro- this was decent, wished it had some cheese and spices to tie it together. Carne asada: grilled steak/onion/cilantro-same chicken comment as the pollo asado Fish tacos: beer batter cod/cole slaw- this was my favorite, the beer batter and cole slaw went well together. If I didn't have the spicy green salsa, not sure I would've enjoyed it as much. In terms of value and flavor, I'd say the place is okay. The service was great so I bumped it up to 3.5 stars.

Wanted a later snack the last night in our Airbnb so placed an order via GrubHub to pick up on our own about 10 minutes later. Appreciated the prompt service. The nachos and taquitos were fantastic and filled with flavor. Definitely tasted authentic and freshly made. The owner or manager greeted us, gave us the tip to just order for pick up and not use a food service like GrubHub, etc because of the extra fees. Also she gave us menus for brunch and their regular days. While we didn't actually eat at the restaurant, we saw the rooftop bar and inside seating area, and really liked the ambience. If we lived near the area or were to visit again, we would definitely get takeout or eat at this restaurant again.

Casa Valijo is a must-stop-in place! The owner, Valerria, and her husband Everett will make you feel welcome and treat you like family. And Valerria knows all about Tequila and markets her own! Their drinks and their food are fantastic. Myron and the Trio play there every other Friday from 6-10pm. Great talent... smooth jazz to soothe the soul! I came in after visiting only twice, and the owner and her husband called me by name! You NEED to visit Casa Valijo!

The inside of the restaurant is beautiful and gives a very comfortable at-home type of vibe, Valeria is also always so kind and welcoming. The servers are always very attentive and friendly and the food was phenomenal! the seafood is genuinely fresh and delicious which is rare, meat is full of flavor without being doused in seasonings and salt. Drinks have a perfect balance and are delicious. Wonderful Service, got my drink within 5 or so minutes of ordering! Overall a great spot for a date/anniversary/event worth celebrating! Will be coming back again and again!

Drinks were very good. Elote corn very good. Unfortunately I didn't like the chips but guacamole was very good, 17.50 though is too $$ much to order again. I had the chicken fajitas they were not bad but not very seasoned. No sour cream or salsa just kinda bland. Dessert was pistachio and chocolate cake very very good. Overall it's a good meal. It's not your typical Mexican restaurant I understand but I really like red salsa and chips.

We went with high expectations given the Yelp reviews, but unfortunately we came away disappointed with the quality of the dishes and the surprisingly high prices. We don't like to write negative comments about a neighboring establishment, but to be up front about it, our experience was not good. Let's get a bit specific: The restaurant, which is quite clean and has an appealing look, is on the second floor of a building and has a large indoor seating area with bar and in addition a rooftop seating space. Very cool. And a nice server. What isn't so cool, however, is the absence of an elevator; climbing two sets of stairs is required, so handicap accessible it isn't. The menu is not particularly large (at least compared to the usual Tex-Mex restaurants in this state), but the prices are definitely on the high side. If you want house-made chips with guac, it's $17.50 -- chips do not come with your arrival. Two tacos are $11.50, not bad, but our chicken tacos consisted of tiny diced pieces of chicken, unheated, with no lettuce, and very unseasoned. A bit of green sauce added little spice. The Ceviche Acapulco ($25) was a large glass too heavily saturated with tomato sauce and including tiny chunks of tasteless fish (tilapia). The Barra vieja ($25) was strips of steak with a bland dip. The grilled octopus is $26. Fried fish is $35 (red snapper). The refried beans seemingly came from a can: no taste, lukewarm. Nothing Mexican about them. We could go on. Again, we have only good wishes for the owners of this restaurant, but we hope they can see their way to some changes. And maybe we came on a bad day, but sadly we cannot recommend it and can't find much enthusiasm to go back anytime soon.

Great employees and quick service. We went for dinner on a weeknight and it was very quiet. The fish taco was amazing, beef was okay. Definitely recommend the nachos and fried fish taco. Decent portions for the price, overall a great place!

Food was so authentic! Tacos al Pastor were delish, and the pozole was very filling. I had the Hibiscus water sweetened which was yummy. Service was amazing, they treat you like friends and family such a lovely ambience. Beautiful decor! Hopefully everything goes well!! Will definitely be back!

Love the ambiance and the service was excellent. The food, absolutely delicious. I had the salmon, my daughter had the filet Mignon, and my wife had the shrimp. All cooked to perfection. We also had the House Margaritas which were amazing. This is not your typical Mexican restaurant consisting of tacos and burritos, this is authentic Acapulco cuisine. The owner came over to our table and introduced herself and explained the menu. She also told us about their tequila they are making which should be available in about 6 months. Looking forward to that for sure. The wait staff and bartender were also excellent making sure we had everything we needed including refills. We ended the night with pistachio ricotta cake which again, was delicious. Will definitely return.

If you are looking for AUTHENTIC and FRESH Mexican food, this is your place to go!! Not only is their food amazing but their drinks are the bomb. The owners are absolutely amazing & make this restaurant an experience in itself. You will find yourself building a friendship with the owners and staff here, a family! Their jazz nights are also a huge hit as well as their trivia nights. I highly recommend trying out some of their food!! Even if you want to just come on down to take a look, it's so much worth it. Don't miss out on their happy hours & getting to sit on their rooftop seating for these beautiful nights!!

I got the taquitos and they were bland. My boyfriend had enchiladas and were also a bit bland. It was an unusually hot day out in April and was very warm inside the restaurant and no windows were open. The woman who brought our food over was pleasant but didn't seem to speak much English, which is fine, but it did make communicating a bit difficult. Overall I'd probably give them on more chance to see if the food quality issue is as a one off or not.

Boy, oh boy, Torrington has some real untapped gems, that I could have chosen to keep to myself,…read morebut just can't. There's no way I'm downplaying this. My friend Jason suggested we eat here. "It's not fancy, they don't serve alcohol, but their food is outstanding," he said convincingly. "What time?," I said in an instant! Having recently been to Casa Valijo also in Torrington, I can tell you El Tenate's is a solid competitor. At Casa Valijo the service was better, and I enjoyed the friendly bartender and inventive drinks, but El Tenate's food was just as flavorful, fresh and abundant, if we are to make comparisons. The 3 tacos for $12.50 were generous, and truly delicious. The beef taco was literally the best I've ever eaten, and stuffed to the gills. The salsa verde was outstanding, the flavors were all outstanding. Nothing too salty, or cold or bland. Every flavor was on-point. The guac was actually the best I've ever had as well. Next to my husband's homemade, of course. It tasted authentic, like some of the finest Mexican I've ever eaten. And, it didn't have that citrusy acidic flavor you get with store bought, or restaurants that use too much lime or salt. It was perfectly seasoned and savory, without an invasive top note. The Roast Pork Enchiladas were also outstanding , succulent and tender, and the salsa verde tasted rich and fragrant like a green tomato does when you first pluck it off the vine. Look, I don't get excited very easily about these small town restaurants that typically close down in a year, but this is a local eatery that deserves more praise and larger crowds, and a prosperous future. Now here's a secret: I heard that Thursdays and Fridays are the best days to eat there, as all the meats starts to get cooked and prepared on Wednesday when they are closed. Careful marinating processes, and slow cooking, allows for the meats to be seasoned and possess a tenderness that can only be achieved with care and love by the cooks. As a self-professed foodie, I say run, don't walk to El Tenate! It's the Northwest Corners best kept secret! P.s you can bring your own alcohol.

And that's a virtue here, because it means that your order is prepared after you order it and isn't sitting in a microwave. Believe us, that makes a huge difference in the quality of your dish not to mention the taste. And that's a big reason why we give Speedy Tacos five stars. There are other reasons it is deserving, most notably the embracing service provided by the family. Truly, we are made to feel so welcome when we go in. It never fails to delight us and enhance the dining experience. And that dining experience has been very good every time we've gone in. The menu isn't exhaustive as in some larger Mexican restaurants. We'd call it a bit more limited though plentiful for most preference. Our favorites? Start with the ceviche, one of those dishes that is prepared when ordered; the octopus is so tender and freshly prepared. Just right! The Fajitas de Pollo comes in cheese, yummy with the sautéed peppers and onions. The tacos, your choice, are delicious, the meats perfectly cooked. The sides are huge (one serving of rice seems large enough for an entire table). Lots of their business is take-out. But there are tables and a bar inside, and we enjoy dining there. The mariachi music is a delight (if it annoys you you'll likely find it is quickly tuned out), but mostly it's being around the pleasant management. Prices are not on the inexpensive side, but the servings are quite substantial, and given the quality of the food and the overall vibe here, we'd have to call it a bargain. So, yes, we're fans. big fans. Speedy Tacos is located in the Staples shopping area, the one with a TJ Maxx, Ninety nine, etc. We urge you to stop by.

Unless it's an off peak time on a weekday, that's usually a potential cause for concern for me. I can't comment too much on the service since a few staff members just came by to help clean up and we didn't have the normal patron experience since it was an event hosted by the restaurant. Instead of going with the tacos or the enchiladas, which looked like they had been sitting around contemplating life for a while, I just kind of made a bit of a salad with ingredients. It was fine enough, not something I would personally spend money on. The best way I could describe the food would be hangover food.
