I have eaten here a couple of times over the past few months and words do not describe what you experience here. To be clear, I doubt people think "Winsted CT" is a foodie destination, but if you stop at Mario's Tuscany Grill, it will be from that point forward. Starting at the top, there is plenty of parking on the street. This area of Main Street Winsted is actually ok for a little walk on the sidewalk. Once inside Mario's, the staff is very warm and friendly, showing you to a table quickly. The dining room has ample space, you do not feel crowded. The menu is amazing, on previous visits the Seafood Combination and Chicken Milanese is simply perfect and delicious with an ample portion! Here's where it gets even weirder and BETTER. If you visit their Facebook page, you see pictures of amazing platters of food. YET!, that isn't on the menu. So I asked the very friendly waiter, "how do we do these platters?".. He simply said, tell me what you want! My friend and I collaborated, and said "start with steak gorzonzola".. Ok, then what? "Well Some Clams", "how many?" Me: "I dont know,a dozen?" "that enough?", Me: "No of course not" Waiter: "What else?" Me: "well, some scallops, some shrimp, and more clams".. Waiter replies, "Ok, we'll make it nice" .. "Nice" has to be the understatement of the year. This platter comes out, Steak Gorgonzola, flanked with 18 clams, half a dozen scallops, grilled shrimp, asparagus, Caprese tomato salad.. it was unbelievable.. Everything was cooked to perfection, the presentation was absolutely outrageous, and it was incredibly delicious!! The seafood takes an already top‑tier vodka sauce and somehow makes it even better. As a Jersey boy, I don't say that lightly. * I decided to go rogue and step outside my usual penne vodka or steak. I wanted veal parm. I've never had anything fried here besides the calamari (which is amazing), so I figured: why not? Here's the plot twist: The veal parm was the only dish I've ever had at Mario's that didn't hit the usual Mario's standard. The veal itself was totally different from the fresh, delicious cut in the Neapolitan, and the breading had a little... funk. Almost like it had been prepped ahead and picked up a freezer‑burn vibe. We came here for a late lunch/early dinner on Saturday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Very pretty inside and the staff is very nice.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There was some confusion with their dinner special menu and the waitress kept coming back to give us the updated one. It got her frazzled. So, my friend waited a very long time to get the glass of wine she ordered then finally reminded her of it after we received our appetizer. The appetizer was a daily special of Hot Antipasto consisting of stuffed mushrooms, baked clams and mozzarella sticks. All Delicious. We also had this lovely bread and this tomato relish kind of sauce on the table. We really liked that too. For our entree we shared the Shrimp and scallops in a vodka sauce. It was really good. This is an incredible place! Right from the moment you walk in, the staff makes you feel like family. After moving to a town in Massachusetts about half an hour north of Mario's, we were thrilled to discover this restaurant since we came from an area known for outstanding dining, Mario's keeps up to that standard. I wrote a review 3 years ago, 5 stars. I'm way over due to write another one. I grew up in NYC a few blocks from Little Italy. I had many favorites. When I retired and moved to Winsted, I tried all the restaurants. Mario's is still my #1. My dad was Gen. MacArthur's personal chief and my uncle was head chef for the Child's Rest. Chain. 1st Timers to Mario's Tuscany Grill in Winsted this afternoon (although I did get a takeout cheese pizza from them about a year ago, I was very underwhelmed with that pizza, needed to be cooked longer. It was just not up to my standards in a state known for its pizza). We started off with a fried calamari appetizer -- it was good. My wife had some white sangria, she wasn't impressed, the drink lacked any fruit pieces in it. LONG wait for our entrees to come out. So long, that a table nearby that had been seated at the same time as us, had already eaten and left before our meals finally arrived at our table. When my wife cut into her Peppercorn steak, she realized it was undercooked, so they took it back to the kitchen. When it came back out, it was perfect, one of the best steaks she has ever had. The sauce was also outstanding. My Salmon ala Mario was "OK", I'll be honest, I've had better salmon at other restaurants. All in all, I'd say we were a bit disappointed with our experience at Mario's Tuscany Grill this afternoon. But that's not to say we wouldn't go back, if my wife had a hankering for a Bangin' steak, I'm pretty sure she'd want to go to Mario's. Next time though, I'll order "something Italian" and see how it goes. Will write an update when that happens. read more

we have been going here for 20 years and you can't get any better. I feel like it's equal to the Italian restaurants in New York.

We dined at Mario's Tuscan Grill during a visit to CT. Finding the restaurant was serendipitous, as it was close to our lodgings. We were greeted warmly by the hostess and seated promptly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The atmosphere was intimate and welcoming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered the Clams Linguine, with white sauce. The portion of clams was very generous and the white wine sauce was mild but flavorful. A homemade Italian Dressing on crisp salad greens was a very nice introduction into the meal. My wife had the Chicken Oscar, also very well presented and prepared. A lava cake dessert topped off the evening. In short, the food was excellent! I awarded 5 stars, but that is rounding from an overall impression of "4.6". Our waiter was just a bit slow, and slightly inattentive. Looking around the dining area, this was not the norm for the staff. We just got the "relative short straw". I would highly recommend this dining experience. read more

Back in August of 2025 we reserved the restaurant for a large party for lunch after my Uncles funeral. The owner was supposed to come and open the restaurant for us but he and the staff were a no show leaving 30+ people standing on Main Street in front of an empty restaurant. My Aunt tried to contact the owner (the reservation was made with him) to find out why nobody was there but was unable to get in contact with him. Hours later he called her back only to say there was a "family emergency" and that's why nobody was there. Nobody believes that story. If that were true where were the staff? Is the restaurant not capable of running if he isn't there? Using his logic, he had time to call all the staff and tell them not to come in but wasn't able to contact us and tell us he had to cancel? Instead of admitting that he screwed up and never made the reservation to begin with he proceeded to tell this outlandish lie. What was supposed to be the celebration of a wonderful mans life turned into a disaster. Instead of getting together and reminiscing all of our great memories of my Uncle we were frantically making phone calls in hopes that another restaurant could accommodate us. Luckily the Tributary was able to take on our entire party with zero notice and it went without a hitch. I used to like Mario's but after this situation I will never go back there. I still would have been upset, but had he told the truth that he forgot to put the reservation in I would have been more understanding. Instead I'm left with this sour taste in my mouth of an owner who obviously cares more about his own pride than admitting to making a mistake. read more

Was left stranded along with 30 other ppl outside their business on the sidewalk after making reservations for a reception following a funeral service back in August. Finally decided to write this review because to this day it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, and no restitution of any kind was ever offered or made to the grieving family. Owner stated he had a family emergency, yet he couldn't make any other arrangements for restaurant staff to meet us? No attempts made to call us?? He also never answered his phone while we were frantically trying to figure out what was going on. Will never eat at this establishment again, let alone trust them to host any kind of important gathering. Buyer beware if you ever reserve the restaurant or hire their catering services. If they have no qualms with abandoning an entire grieving family, would you really trust them to serve your birthday or wedding?? The silver lining to this story.. the Tributary was able to accommodate all of us last minute. The owner called her family in to help last minute to prepare all the food. Now this is a family business I will give my money to. Too bad for Marios. They lost over 30 customers who still live in the area. Now that is poor business. read more

Had the Lobster Ravioli. Very good sauce and could taste the lobster ( not always guaranteed with some other places "Lobster" dishes)! Spoke to the owner when I arrived to pick up my order and he was very nice and wanted to make sure I was happy with everything. When I come to visit CT, I always have at least one meal here. Mario's is one my very favorite restaurants. It offers traditional, but also unique Italian dishes that are delicious and comforting. The entire restaurant and their staff are very welcoming and kind- the Italian decor and vibe is cozy. The food is very good! I've had a variety of dishes over time- some of my favorites are the Salmon ala Mario, Lobster Ravioli, and Chicken Neopolatana. The best appetizer by far is the Spedini! Get it! You'll want to lick the bowl. The dishes are also always beautiful and good portions. The service is always wonderful. read more

Looking for good bites that are local to you? Check this place out in Winsted. We love coming here for some pizza, wings and calamari. The calamari is always cooked to perfection and this time they had a calamari puttanesca special which we had to try and we are so happy we did, it was quite honestly the best calamari I've ever had. The wings are also just as good, we order them extra crispy and they are perfect every time. The wings are a great size and the meat isn't fatty which is a huge win in our book. The complimentary bread and sun dried tomato oil they have is really what brings us back every time. I wish I had the recipe, quite honestly. And of course the delicious pizzas they serve. The crust is exactly what I'm looking for when I order a pizza and it's hard to find in this area. Whoever serves us when we come here is always kind and very quick. Our drink is never empty and there is always food on the table. What's also nice about this place is the option to sit at the bar with whatever sports games are on or being able to sit in the dining room for a more formal experience. So my office once again had another party catered this time it was by Mario's as you can see by my pictures people started to dig in before I had a chance to take some great pictures! But I have to say the food was absolutely amazing The salad was delicious it was very crispy and all the vegetables were crispy and fresh there was also blue cheese crumbles on the side and an amazing balsamic vinaigrette that they also make in house. The chicken piccata was probably one of the best chicken piccatas I have ever had it was just enough lemon just enough capers and the chicken was cooked to perfection and I'm really big on the way chicken is cooked. This dish was absolutely perfect. They also brought us complementary Italian bread which was amazing I used it to dip the extra lemony sauce it was so yummy and the bread was so fresh. Next on to the rice this usually isn't on the menu but one of my co-workers was adamant about getting vegetable rice and thank God they did because it was absolutely amazing and kudos to the restaurant for making the rice special for us. Last but not least the seafood raviolis they were so yummy they were stuffed with a crab meat stuffing and topped with a vodka cream sauce. OMG I probably could have ate the whole entire tray this dish was so good. I personally can not wait to make a trip to this restaurant to dine in because if they're catering is as good as the restaurant it's going to be another five stars for me. On a Sunday night everything within a 30 minute radius of Mario's seems to close before 8 p.m., leaving us with very few options for dinner. We were happy to discover that Mario's was still open until 9:30 and had a very nice and relaxed atmosphere. White table cloth tables, spacious booths, and comfortable space - perfect for a comforting Italian meal at the end of the day. The waitstaff was also very nice and accommodating. The only slight disappointment was the food. We ordered a shrimp and scallop dish atop penne as well as a jambalaya with shrimp, chicken and sausage. Both of the dishes were big portions and had tasty sauces, but there was very little seafood in them. The majority of the dishes were pasta or chicken. Overall, a comfortable and nice dinner - just wish the dinners were a little bit better. read more

Warmly greeted by Sarah; and when I asked for a table versus a booth -- she was kind and gracious. Our server Al -- was the best of the best! Our meal was off the grid wonderful! Once again the Spedini was over the top exceptional, the calamari cooked to perfection. The two men had steaks; my husband the porterhouse special which was huge and he said delicious and perfectly prepared. Our nephew had the filet mike on and he said his was so tender and succulent. My seafood combination was oh so good; my favorite combination and with the pasta; I am always in heaven! While we were all claiming to be stuffed -- we made room for dessert. I had - just had to have tartufo. The dark chocolate covering with the dark chocolate ice cream was the perfect ending for me. My husband said the cheesecake delicious and the afagato for my nephew -- a perfect ending. You can never go wrong at Mario's -- the food is always perfectly prepared. A hidden gem!! We ordered take out for the family to celebrate Mother's Day. The food was cooked to perfection and ready within 30 minutes. We ordered 2 filet mignons (1 medium rare & 1 medium well), penne ala vodka & lobster ravioli. The prices were reasonable and worth every penny! The filet was the best we've had in a long time. The lobster ravioli had huge pieces of lobster with a delicious sauce and asparagus. All 4 meals came with a side salad & freshly baked bread. this is our go to for pizza locally. The pizza is a thin crust, good taste, crispy bacon, decent toppings- but its a bit on the small side. As for meals - I find it a total hit or miss. Iv'e had chicken parm perfect once , but then the next time it was tough and rubbery. Lasagna was assembled really oddly and had a massive amount of meat and barely any cheese. sauce is usually ok ,but on one occasion it was so bland.
