"Meatball grinder". Looked like freezer burnt meatloaf.
    Mary Jane R.

This place would be a great restaurant for the tv show "Restaurant Impossible." We went there because it had decent yelp reviews, and since we were just passing through we had never eaten in this town before. The nearly dead houseplant in the window should have been our first clue to turn back! Dirty dishes (one had tomato sauce on it) and a dirty water glass (black on the bottom) made us wish they used paper products. Not a great way to start a meal. The "meatball" grinder was made with freezer-burnt meatloaf. Looked gross. See the photo I uploaded. The pizza crust was thick ... So thick that it was not cooked all the way through. The "Greek Salad" had pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, and a puddle of oil and red wine vinegar. Adding feta cheese was an additional cost. Not a traditional Greek salad, but the small fed three of us so that was a bonus. The Bathroom was plain, neat and clean. The waitress was pleasant. She gave the boys lollipops which made the boys happy. Happy ... but not enough to make this review more than 1 star.

    Cheese pizza.

Amazing pizza! The bread is fresh and warm. It's quiet. It's right next to a fab nail salon. Cute personal size pizza.

If comfort had an address, it would be Mario's. We always kick things off with a small pizza for the table, because that's the law here. The bread and tomato relish? Should be sold by the gallon. I would pay an irresponsible amount of money for it. If you know, you know. Last night's table lineup was elite: * One of us ordered the veal Neapolitan -- fresh, tender veal in a vodka sauce so good it should have its own fan club. * Another went for the penne alla vodka with shrimp and scallop, which was hands‑down the best dish of the night. The seafood takes an already top‑tier vodka sauce and somehow makes it even better. As a Jersey boy, I don't say that lightly. * I decided to go rogue and step outside my usual penne vodka or steak. I wanted veal parm. I've never had anything fried here besides the calamari (which is amazing), so I figured: why not? Here's the plot twist: The veal parm was the only dish I've ever had at Mario's that didn't hit the usual Mario's standard. The veal itself was totally different from the fresh, delicious cut in the Neapolitan, and the breading had a little... funk. Almost like it had been prepped ahead and picked up a freezer‑burn vibe. Not bad -- just not Mario's‑level magical. But here's the thing: One imperfect dish doesn't change the fact that Mario's is one of our all‑time favorite restaurants. The atmosphere, the people, the consistency, the warmth -- it's all unbeatable. We love this place and will absolutely be back, probably embarrassingly soon. Mario's is home. Even when one dish misses, the experience never does.

There was some confusion with their dinner special menu and the waitress kept coming back to give us the updated one. It got her frazzled. So, my friend waited a very long time to get the glass of wine she ordered then finally reminded her of it after we received our appetizer. The appetizer was a daily special of Hot Antipasto consisting of stuffed mushrooms, baked clams and mozzarella sticks. All Delicious. We also had this lovely bread and this tomato relish kind of sauce on the table. We really liked that too. For our entree we shared the Shrimp and scallops in a vodka sauce. It was really good. I'd definitely come back here when i'm in the area again.

The salt in chicken dish almost gave me a heart attack. I arrived with my cousin early and there was another table with four people and just us. I overheard that the people couldn't get the drinks they wanted. One of them said he waited all week for a good drink and they didn't have the right stuff to make it. The waitress made him something else but he didn't get his first choice. The flavor of my chicken tasted like it came from a smelly rancid refrigerator. So I couldn't finish it or take it home. I didn't have the heart to tell the waitress, who was trying her very best to please us. And she did a great job making suggestions. I heard someone else complain her Chicken Florentine was so salty they couldn't finish it either. So much potential for a local riverside restaurant. With changes and more arts happening in Winsted, this place might not survive the demand for better quality and a new trendy vibe like Sassos or Hanqs or Foxtails. My pasta sauce was good, but the pasta broke and fell apart. Whether overcooked or not boiled properly, or re-boiled, if you cannot cook pasta at an Italian restaurant you might consider fixing that issue, stat. They need a bartender, and to get out of the 80s with their menu. Better knowledge of drinks and wines is also important. If you're not training your staff on the latest drink trends and the names of wines, you will fail. You always have to be leery of an Italian place that spells Cavatelli wrong on their menu. "Cavitelli" can't even be found in Google. It doesn't exist. Something is not right with the way the food tastes. I hope they read this, I was going to post 2 Stars, but their affable and accommodating waitress saved them.

EXPERIENCE; What did come as a surprise to me was the popularity of this rural tavern on a fall Friday evening and the quality of food and service experienced. Jason P. had reported excellent fish and chips, noteworthy wings, and selection of local beers at the tavern in his review. I ordered the fish and chips alongside the server's suggested Norbrook Farm-brewed Mount Pisgah IPA. The fish and chips dish ($20) was as Jason had described -- "TOP TIER". I look forward to exploring the menu further (although it will be hard to pull me away from the fish and chips). Kudos to the tavern's Head Chef Austin Ouelette and his crew! AMBIANCE: There are three dining areas -- an outdoor patio, a newly renovated, modern dining room, and the original dining room filled with colonial-inspired furniture. TIP: Parking lot size was insufficient the Friday evening I visited, necessitating parking on the shoulder of State Route 20 . This possibility may be circumvented via a visit on an earlier weekday. With that said, seating is fairly limited on a busy Friday/Saturday night or if they are having a special for dinner, so definitely make reservations! We came for late lunch on Saturday and it was fairly quiet. Needless to say, since it's off the beaten path we sometimes forget this gem is here but when we remember we never regret it!

In fact, it was common in the 80's and 90's to see multiple generations working to provide their customers the best... I had that experience yesterday. Upon walking into the spotless dining room, I saw Nonna/Mom/Great Aunt in the first booth looking over the operation while the next generation was busy in the kitchen - and working in concert with the youngest family member who was working the floor. Fantastic. So friendly, so heartwarming. I also watched as "regulars" came in for their dinner. They ALL stopped by the kitchen entry to say hello to all employees and each employee greeted them by name. I hope to one day achieve this status. The food was good. I had a side salad, fried calamari, and a small pizza (half plain, half pepperoni and ricotta). Everything was fresh, tasty, and really well cooked. I was very happy to be a part of a dinner service there. I am looking forward to trying an entree - I have a craving for veal... maybe later this week. My only knock on my experience is that their sauce is very simple, and, in my opinion, lacks a little tang to stand up to the pizza cheese and toppings. But the crust was almost clinically perfect. My half pepperoni and ricotta side was slightly floppy in the middle - but I have to take responsibility for that as it was a tough order. Each half of my pizza cooks much differently. The plain cheese side was perfect. I can't wait to go back.

I ordered one with pepperoni, sausage and fresh peppers as opposed to roasted ones (which is an option) for pickup. The restaurant was nice. If you're a Prince (the musician, not the one stripped of his title -- too soon?) fan you may love the purple hues. The crust was good chewy. I loved the pepperoni. They cupped and crisped, but in a slightly different visual way than many cup and crisp pepperoni. Very cool. Tasted great too. The fresh peppers ended up being red rather than green. This is a personal preference, but I prefer green. I like the flavor of the green juice better on a pizza. I also think the green color pops better since the sauce and pepperoni are both red. I liked the pizza, but I didn't love it. I couldn't figure out why at first. I think the primary reason was the sausage. It wasn't bad. I just didn't connect with the flavor. And also I prefer larger pieces, than the smaller crumbles Camille's used. If I had this pizza without the sausage, I would have liked it better. I do have a favorable impression of Camille's though. I would definitely return. 4.25 Stars
