Their pizza is really good - there's a little sweetness to the sauce. We tried the pineapple and ham, pepperoni, and sausage. All three were good. They don't nickel and dime you for the toppings - if you get them on only half a pizza they don't charge you the full topping amount like some other places I've ordered from. They give you a generous helping of chicken tenders, and the chicken to breading ratio is good. They're tasty too. The fried chicken was overdone but still flavorful according to the person in my party who ate it. The portion size of the appetizers and sides we tried were generous. None of us cared for the coleslaw. Even though it was a little creamy there were still hints of vinegar, making it taste too sour for our liking. The mac and cheese is downright disgusting. Sorry, but it's true. It's a white cheddar cheese with corkscrew noodles and it has a very fake cheese flavor. Since I'm stuck inside for the next few days studying, I figured I would order some pizza. Doreen's ended up showing on my list. At first, I was hesitant because it's a local pizzeria shop in an area where the people there might not know what good pizza is. Also, from the other reviews the service is horrendous and I can't wait two plus hours to get a pizza, especially if the order will be wrong. In the end instead of ordering a whole pizza I ordered two slices, a Maxwell Street polish since that's hard to mess up and a chicken parmigiana sandwich. The order got out on time and it had all of my items so I'm happy. Now that I took a deep dive into the items. Pizza: Appearance - The pizza itself looked brilliant online which is one of the reasons why I wanted to order it. In person it looks about like an average slice. The mozzarella cheese is perfectly melted with good browning, the sauce is spread every so lightly in order to give you that perfect combination of cheese and sauce that we've come to love in Chicago. 5/5 Taste - The sauce on the sausage is a sweet sauce. It's a bit too sweet which might turn some people off. Tuning into the pepperoni slice it was clear that the sauce for the sausage was a mishap because the pepperoni slice tasted much better. I'm happy that I opted for it slices instead of a whole pizza since I didn't get burned. Everything works together well her. The pizza has a very robust flavor that makes you not want to stop. This is some of the best pizza I've had in a while. 5/5 Maxwell Street Polish: Appearance - Not quite as appealing as the photos online that have the works, but still a good looking dog nonetheless. There's plenty of sport peppers & onions on the toasted poppy seed bun. 5/5 Taste - If you make a Maxwell Street Polish that doesn't knock people's socks off...then you have serious problems at your restaurant. Luckily Doreen's doesn't have that problem. A perfectly executed polish that is extremely satisfying to devour. 5/5 Chicken parmigiana: Appearance - It comes on a pretzel bun which is a first-time combo for me. Initially you're going to be disappointed at the little amount of cheese and sauce on the top of the sandwich and then you open the bottom and there's more cheese and sauce so you're good. The chicken portions are also gigantic, but for $11 they better be. 5/5 Taste - The chicken itself seem dry although it is definitely quality white meat chicken. This seems to be mostly due to the fact that the piece is so large that the sauce doesn't cover all of it. The parts with sauce are juicy while the sauceless parts are so dry they can cut your mouth. Everything comes together really well although you do wish there was more cheese. 4/5 Overall, Doreen's seems to be one of those gems where they get everything right. Even the French fries are seasoned to perfection. I look forward to having Doreen's in the rotation of my usual pizzeria's especially since other pizzeria's have gone downhill recently (stares blankly at Reggio's.) Does it beat an Albano's or Paisan's? Deep what?! This is the definitive Chicago style pizza. Lived on Doreen's every week growing up in Hegewisch for 16 years and glad to see it's still here. Larry's and Mancini's were the other two we'd visit but it doesn't look like they lasted. Doreen's is the bar by which I evaluate and establish all pizza and pizza places. Thin crust, carmelized cheese, and SQUARE cut. If you're outside of the Chicagoland area the closest I've been able to find to this are Home Run Inn frozen pizzas, cook them to the high side of their time recommendation (or even a few minutes more) and then square cut it and you almost have simulated Doreen's pizza. Terrible experience. Horrible customer service. I was told order would be ready in 30 minutes, got there in 30 minutes and was told 10 more minutes, waited 30 minutes. Girl at the counter was unfreindly and rude. No "Thank you", no "sorry for the wait". We ordered Cheezy Philly Steak sandwiches with grilled mushrooms and onions and when we got home there was no cheese, no mushrooms, no onions, the bread was burnt and the meat just looked gross. I went back and they refused to issue me a refund, telling me they would make me new food or give me credit for my next order. The food is pretty good but their business practices lack tremendously. My team and I ordered almost $100 of food for a team lunch. Immediately after hanging up we called back because we forgot to request they apply our coupon to the order. The manager would not accept the coupon because we already hung up. We canceled the order. The team and I vowed to never order from them again. After a few years, we decided to give them another shot. Today, I ordered a few slices of pizza for pick up. I was told they would be ready in 15 minutes. When I go to pick up the slices they tell me they just put the pizza in the oven and it would be another 15 minutes. I would always buy Doreen's frozen pizzas at the grocery store and always enjoyed them so I was in the neighborhood (Hegewisch IL)and thought I'd give them a try. I was satisfied with the pizza, but the sandwiches were a little blah. Don't get me wrong, they weren't terrible but just not great. First off, they put a lot of their sandwiches on pretzel buns and I'm not a big fan of them. They put their patty melt on marble rye and I just prefer plain, seedless rye. However, the patty melt is one of their better sandwiches. And I certainly love BBQ sauce, but they absolutely drown the Monterey jack chicken sandwich with BBQ sauce! The Monte Carlo chicken sandwich is extremely salty. Not that this has anything to do with the food, but I definitely appreciate the patriotism of this place. A huge American flag at the front counter. They had flyers for supporting local police and fire fighters, so that is really cool. In all fairness, this is probably a 3-1/2 star pizza joint. So, I'm not sure why this entry is called "Doreen's Gourmet Frozen Pizza," because that can be misleading! This address is for their take-out pizza place in Hegewisch...The frozen pizza is actually made in Cal City. This is the real, fresh, deal here! So, I grew up on the East Side (the southernmost neighborhood that borders the lake, not the"new" East Side which is just an extension of downtown), and there were pizza places aplenty: Bob & Jacks, Giappo's, Pucci's, Waldo Cooney, etc. At age 21, moved to Hegewisch (THE southeastern most neighborhood in Chicago) and was at a loss because I was so used to having Bob & Jack's on pizza night and suspected Hegewisch had nothing that lived up to B&J's. I was wrong. I think Doreen's is the best pizza on the Southeast Side. Yes, even better than the now-closed but much beloved Giappo's (which, yes, was pretty darn good but the service was awful!). So, at first glance, Doreen's appears to be another dime-a-dozen pizza/sandwich/Italian take-out place. I mean, they do serve pizza, sandwiches, pastas, salads, chicken, etc--but it's truly quality stuff! The thin-crust pizza is perfect: not cracker-thin, but not too bready, dusted with a little cornmeal, sauce has a nice tang to it, cheesy, sausage perfectly savory, and a nice little amount of grease on top. Call me crazy, but I like my takeout pizza a lil'greasy. I'm ordering takeout because I want to be bad! I've had their wings at parties and they're pretty tasty...Dig the Italian meatball sandwich...Mmm...So meaty! Lots of great choices for the hungry! I'm reviewing from a takeout standpoint since I lived about 2 blocks away so always picked up my order...They do offer delivery too, though! Hello, FOOD SNOB here. While driving thru Hegewisch Town today I remembered Jackie L. review on Doreens. They sell Pizza by the slice which was good since I did not have a lot of time. Hegewisch always brings back old High School memories for me, since I went to High School with a lot of people from here. The store front is kind of reminded me of one of those old corner neighborhood Bars that are Quickly becoming extinct. Most of you know what i mean. The Pizza is the Old Fashion type, thin crust with Corn Meal baked into the bottom, YUM. Kind of like the old Johns Pizza from the Cal City Strip but much firmer. This was Pizza before the Big Franchises ruined the Quality of Pizza. The Cheese and the Sauce tasted very fresh, especially the Cheese with the little bit of grease on the top was very tastey. Over the years, I have stopped by here when I'm pressed for time and usually will grab a slice of pizza or an order of chicken wings. The slice is good and hits the spot. The wings are fried up with no breading, then smothered with an off the shelf bottled wing sauce. Well typically I believed that the wings were priced right. The wings were whole wings not the bitty pieces you receive at the wing places. Therefore, it was a decent value. Well some brilliant person at Doreen's decided to offer the same bitty chicken pieces without notifying customers that they are now going to receive half wings at the same pricing. Well upon opening my box of wings and seeing half the amount of chicken that I normally received for the same price did not make me a happy customer. Okay, now they think that they should price above par with places that specialize in wings? I paid $7.49 for 6 bitty pieces which works out to $1.25 per wing!! Wingstop's 10 piece order works out to .99 cents per wing and Buffalo Wild Wings 16 piece order works out to .94 cents per wing. The wing chains have higher overhead expenses and offer their own proprietary sauces which they created. Yet, Doreen's thinks that they can price their wings higher than these other two?? Remember Doreen's does not create their own sauce and its not uncommon for them to quote you a long wait time so that they can defrost the wings. Doreen's you can keep your wings. Next time I will travel a little further to the other two. read more
