My parents used to come here back in the day. I made a reservation for mother's birthday and it wasn't acknowledged. The waitress didn't really seem too happy to even wait on us. She didn't ask how the food was either. Barely greeted us or even a half smile. I ordered a salad on the side with my burger rather than fries and wasn't offered any dressing. We immediately were given the check rather than being asked if wanted coffee or even dessert. It seemed like were a hassle to be there.....better customer service is needed...a general welcome would have went a long way. read more

Definitely lived up to the social media hype and no doubt best tavern burger in Queens. One can choose any burger on their extensive burger menu with a side of fries or onion rings for less than 20 bucks, it's a deal I'm willing to sign up for every day. We went on a Thursday late afternoon and place was energetic and lively, just what you expect from a well-known busy tavern. I can only imagine what it's like on weekends when they have live band. Visited again recently after visiting the local church (across the street) and having a blood donation. I figured what better way to replenish iron, protein, and nutrients than a pint and burger. Sat at a small table in the back room and service was great as always. This place has always been a legit Irish pub and the owners and staff are amazing. They were also just voted best burger in Queens. I ordered a Guinness and the BBQ'n Beyond. The burger was cooked a little more than I had hoped (mid-well instead of medium), but was still very flavorful along with the fries (potato wedges). I will always visit when in the area. read more

Damn good burger traditional burger. It is quite pricey, but it does come with a hunk of meat that's like an inch thick. It's cooked really well when medium rare--extremely soft and tender with a good beefy taste. The buns are quite standard and it comes with a hunk of lettuce. It only comes with like 4 or 5 onion rings but they are HUGE. Unfortunately, it's a lot more batter than onion, but it's still quite good since it's nice and soft with a good bite. Service is quick and friendly despite being very busy on a lovely weekend evening! The ambience is very lively and cheerful, adding to the entire experience. read more

I stopped by Donovan's on Labor Day to see what all the fuss was about. This rating does not include the burgers which everyone raves about. No, I opted to try some other items on the menu to see how the kitchen executes. The place was not full and getting a table was easy. As the afternoon became evening, people arrived by the bunches given the Mets were about to play the Red Sox. I ordered the Allagash White as their keg of the month and it is a nice choice for summer's end. I also ordered the fish and chips , which for a little over twenty bucks was a decent value, but the cod could have been more substantial. It was a piece and a half, but it was freshly battered, made to order, and resulted in crisp cod. Served with vinegar and lemon to brighten things, as well as tartar sauce, it was a good effort. The chips were good fries and one had to adjust their expectations, for these taste like freshly cut potatoes and not frozen out of a bag. They have a heft and dense texture to which many would not be accustomed. You really taste the potatoes. (For some reason, I had to ask for a glass of water several times and then ask for lemon or lime again when the water had none, despite my previous request.) Next I ordered a Harp on tap, delicious, with the wings, which were a disappointment. I asked for buffalo style extra crispy. They were far from extra crispy and lacked the tang of buffalo sauce. Too sweet actually. The flesh of the flats curled up while frying, exposing the twin bones on the ends of several of them, which did not present themselves in an appetizing manner. They serve them with no carrots or celery, but I put a fork in the ramekin to extract the blue cheese. So this was a miss for me. So to close out, I ordered a Shepherd's pie to go and that turned out to be quite good over the next few days. Nothing fancy, but still quite good. The mashed potatoes were the real deal, with some time under the broiler evident from the slight browning on top . The gravy with the ground beef was savory as expected. The peas and carrots were not overcooked. This was good. In retrospect, I should have ordered the burger, which they serve in about a dozen ways. I didn't count, but they are detailed on the menu. There were some inconsistencies from my visit to Donovan's that surprised me when seen against all the glowing reviews. Nothing was bad about my visit, but my experience does not match the other reviews. At this juncture, I rate Donovan's at three stars, but surely that could improve if I have the burger in one or several of its iterations here. Perhaps they did not have their main chef in the kitchen on Labor Day. A regular Friday or Saturday night might be better all around. read more

Having spent a good chunk of my life in the Boston area, I'm no stranger to great Irish pubs, and Donovan's is way up there in terms of food and overall vibe. Aside from the exceptional burgers, they have delicious comfort food like biscuit chicken pot pie, shepherd's pie, mac 'n' cheese, etc. They also have an extensive brunch menu with (of course) a tasty Irish breakfast platter. En route to a Mets game, I decided to give this restaurant a try. I had heard good things about it from people native of Queens and Long Islanders alike, with all this resounding praise I had to eat something here. There is no denying it, the food is delicious, the location is unbeatable, a short walking distance from not one, but TWO stations on the 7 line. Sure, the prices are a bit on the high side, but you get plenty of food and quick service to boot. This knocks getting something at Citi Field out of the park. Honestly, I was expecting less, but I am happy I lowered the bar, because it was all lovely. Everything had exceptional flavor and was served with a smile. If I had one thing to nitpick, the booth area is incredibly uncomfortable. I tried sitting in it and it was a complete pain in the rear, pun whole-fully intended. Fish and Chips are just called that so that you can understand what you are asking for. The fries are not merely chips, they are what the young folks are looking for when they go on swipe right apps. The burgers are where it is at at Donovan's. They are amazing and consistent and tasty. Here lies the problem. If you get the burger, you may miss the amazing wings that they made me just the other day as the Kitchen was closing and not only didn't complain, they made it a point to make sure I ate despite the hour. You will not encounter the Candied Bacon. That bacon is so good that if Ms. Piggy tasted like that, she would have never been forced to resort to chasing her beloved Kermie, nor would she have lost him. Plenty of bacon for bacon lovers like myself. My burger cooked medium-well was still juicy and melted in my mouth with every bite. My aide of fries were delicious too - sort of like steak fries but better! I paired my burger with the Bells or Bella IPA beer, I forget the name of it, but it was delicious and not too bitter. Have to say the beer was also mouthwatering. Our server was from Ireland and her accent was on point. She was genuinely Irish and very sweet to us. I haven't been here in years, and I never got to review the pub before, so here it goes. It's a fairly large irish bar. I was very surprised at the different seating areas. You can also have a large party, as I witnessed that day. The servers were all really friendly, great, and efficient. I was a bit confused as to who our server was as there were a lot of waiters roaming around and came by the table. This place reminded me of when I was in Ireland at a pub or bar there, and it was great to reminisce. If you're looking for something low-key and lively, this is the place for you. They do have tvs at the front when you walk in, but in the other areas, there aren't any at all. I couldn't see their menu online, so I was interested to see what they serve. They have so many options that it took me a bit to decide. I decided on getting their pasta dish with mushrooms and olive oil on it. It was a bit bland for me, so I had to add some black pepper, hot sauce, and red pepper flakes to the dish. The baked potato skins were good as they were made just right. The dessert was really good as it had vanilla topped off with whipped cream and almonds. It had just the right amount of toppings. All in all, I would return to try other items off of their menu. read more

Stopped by with my buddy for some beers and to try their signature burgers! I got a regular cheeseburger with thick cut fries. The burger was absolutely delicious, tasty and juicy! I have to admit, I didn't have such a good tasting burger in a while. The thick cut fries were fried to perfection and were very tasty. Our waiter, she was great brought us beers right away and would check up on us ever 10-15 minutes to see how everything was even with the place being packed for Sunday football! Worst delivery ever! I called them after waiting for over 30 min for delivery. Delivery man didn't speak any English had the audacity to text me in Spanish . Even had the balls to blame the delivery guy that there is no ketchup! I've been going to Donovan's for years tonight I just couldn't go pick up the order because I had guests but this is beyond ridiculous! And to tell me we are busy! DO NOT ORDER DELiVERY UNLESS YOU PICK UP! Donovan's you are disaster! It wasn't eatable so it went strait to the garbage! I wasted $35.73 for nothing! An everyman's Queens classic if there ever was one. Around a decade ago the prognosis of this place wasn't looking too good. It was showing it's age in all the wrong ways and the weary proprietors seemed to be long past the point of caring. It was a grim depressing scene. Well low and behold two old regulars stepped up to the place and brought it' spruced it up and updated it while retaining all the old school charm and character and restored the place to it's past glory as a beloved neighborhood institution. While I can't say the burger ranks as a contender for my personal "best in the city", it is reliably satisfying and runs the gamut from very solid to excellent on any given day. The menu is rounded it with a likewise reliably solid mix of your standard American and Irish leaning pub standards from poppers and wings to pot roast to pot pies and fish and chips. Daily and weekly deals and specials abound. Dark wood and authentic Irish Pub layout enhance the real deal old school vibe. I'd be hard pressed not to sing the praises of this classic Irish pub, especially since I think they've only gotten better over time. There was a time (see previous review from nearly a decade ago) where I thought Donovan's was good but not great. However, I've changed my tune over the last two years since they've shown so much improvement in the entire operation. They now have increased delivery, acceptance of credit cards, better overall service, and much better food. While I don't think their burgers are the *best* in NYC, I think they're certainly better than most places in neighborhood. They're not the dinky pseudo sliders of yesteryear, but a plump patty with a number of options. I don't remember the Wisconsin burger (mac and cheese) a decade ago, but in 2020 it's as indulgent as any burger I've had. I appreciate the bleu cheese burger has a nice small cheese wedge of bleu and the bacon cheeseburger is always a reliable option. More importantly, when I ask for medium rare, it comes out as such. Though the Irish options may be limited, what they do offer is certainly up to part with the Irish standard of Woodside. Folks might be crazy for the burgers or appetizers, I think their shepherd's pie, when cooked well, can be underrated. I would also say their fish and chips are sizeable, portion wise. The bartenders are a fun bunch and I think they've done a good job with getting food out rather quickly. The latter also applies to their delivery as well, which has been a breeze thus far. When this pandemic is over, I plan on going in for a nice pint of Guinness and a juicy burger. read more

This is caddy corner to St. Sebastian's parish church and across the street from the school by the same name. Our arch rival growing up competing for math & spelling bees in the Brooklyn Queens Diocese, lol I used to have a love- not so love relationship with this parish until now as an adult I have recently become fond of the neighborhood having been born & raised in the Astoria Ditmars parish of Immaculate Conception, aka "ÏMMAC". Across from this pub is my grandparents pharmacy & after 60 years Zachary's is still there. My first time ever visit & happy to learn it is awarded the best burger in Queens. Walked in and it felt like I was going back in time. There was some women gathering near the front at the bar, waiting for their other friends to show up for a lovely lunch in the dining hall near the fireplace. It was just one of those days you needed a fire. So of I had to try the burger and it was spectacular as I waited. A couple came in from the city just for the burger and they treated me to one of their big clans as they always have them as an appetizer and take another one for the road after their wonderful meal I was so nice to sit in the church across the street for a moment, reflecting on how this neighborhood has changed, grown adapted and still flourishing. read more

Hands down the best..my family has been coming here since the 70"s. Had many parties here service and food is always top notch. Potions are generous and you can't beat the prices. We come from Brooklyn to eat here at least once a month. Always get the baked clams, they are overstuffed and delicious. Fried shrimp and crab cake dinners are so good better than we've had at seafood restaurants. For an Irish pub they make an amazing chicken parm. And tonight I strayed from my usual and tried a special, a pork shank that was fall off the bone tender. Burgers and French onion soup are the known staples here and they perfected both.
