Great breakfast tacos! I usually walk the 3 minutes across the street while my daughter is in a nearby swim class. I usually get the brisket and barbacoa breakfast tacos, and they have a salsa bar to dress the tacos. Never been here for lunch or dinner, but I can say it's a great place for breakfast. read more

Oh yes I did. So, I'm not a huge meat-eater, but when delicious food is presented to me, well, let's just say I'm a "freegan". Brisket is something I discovered after moving to Texas (a long time ago y'all, and not from California, so don't get mad). Brisket in general is about the most delicious reason to be an omnivore and Donn's does not disappoint! They give you a few options, so you can get the crispy? brisket (the one with more fat) or the other kind. Both are delicious. So that's good, but the best thing are their sides! They have an amazing "squash" side with zuchinni and yellow squash and tomato yumminess, and their beans are great! They also have the requisite cooked to death collards, which are tasty. I stop by here and grab a burger every once in a while. Usually I am not going west on 290 so it is a project to get here and head East in a big truck. I got a burger today and I was impressed. I got a medium sized burger and it was huge. Hot and cooked fresh. It is rare you have to let a burger cool down but i did this one. Great flavor friendly staff. 3 stars being average.... I may be biased by the fact that Donn's is a stone's throw from my house. The Ribs and Sausage are definitely worthy. The Brisket is hit or miss. Somedays it's great, other days its dry and chewy. Sauce is thin, which I like and its a bit tangy. Not my favorite, but it satisfies. Now, the sides. Don't go for the sides. Not worth it. The corn is directly from a can. mashed potatoes are nothing to write home about, Squash was ok, but overall, the sides are institutional. The pudding is instant. Ok for the jumping 5 year old, but not for the seasoned palette craving Mamaw's banana pudding. Oh, also, its NOT cheap. not as cheap as it should be. Donn's is a local place at the Y in Oak Hill that I've been to a couple times now with family. If you judge a BBQ place strictly on its brisket, Donn's is a total failure. The meat was dry and leathery, with a light smoke flavor but not much seasoning. The meat was undercooked and tough, and there were swaths of gelatinous unrendered fat hanging limply on the surface. It was a workout on the jaw to even chew the brisket into an edible form. Really really poor effort. The sauce is also extremely bad and just masked any smoke flavor the meat might have had. The other items on my plate were somewhat better. The chicken was a miss, but the turkey surprisingly was moist and tasty, albeit without much seasoning. I actually enjoyed the sides (and consequently filled up on them). The potato salad was a white mayo variety with a nice dill sharpness. The beans were solid and tasty - even their squash was pretty good. If somebody drags me here again, I will just eat sides. If you think this is good BBQ, you really need to get out more. Austin is the new capital of great BBQ - do yourself a favor and try Franklin, John Mueller, and Micklethwait. You will never eat Donn's again. Nor, hopefully, will I. read more

This long time BBQ joint has expanded the menu to include tacos & breakfast items with the interior space redone for better flow in the eating experience. The staff is friendly and mostly neighborhood folks eat here from the Oak Hill area. I wish the beef chop had a little less sauce with focus on brisket. Wouldn't mind a little more smoke flavor on the meats. For the value, a reasonable place for quick BBQ or weekend breakfast tacos. Peanut safe for our son Jake to eat as well. read more

I'd eaten here once about 5 years ago and didn't recall any remarkable experience. I could have gone the rest of my life without going back to be honest. My wife is REALLY into BBQ and she asked to try it on the way home. Most of these Yelps point to average and I concur. The sauce was runny and without much kick. Maybe that's why the hot sauce is on the table. The brisket was dry. The jalapeno sausage had absolutely zero spiciness to it. Did it even have peppers in it? Beans didn't have much flavor to them. The fries were OK (although they were that kind that seem to have some kind of batter on them), and kudos to the employees making me fresh fries and bringing them to my table. The wife had green beans that seemed to have a weird color to them, Probably because they are canned as mentioned in a previous review. The cherry cobbler lacked any sort of sweetness to it. You can get a couple of slices of wheat bread in a plastic sandwich baggie at the register. Seems really weird to do it like that and a waste of baggies. I also hate eating BBQ with plastic forks and knives and on styrofoam plates. I know Rudy's has plasticware, but it seems more manageable on the butcher paper. There seems to be a lone picnic table outside so I guess that counts for Yelp's outdoor seating survey. read more

Note: let me start off by saying: "three stars isn't bad". To me, three stars indicates average. Donn's Texas BBQ at the 7001 Oak Meadow location does a good job offering affordable BBQ meals. There is a typical offering of meats, including ham and turkey, and there seem to be at least as many, if not more, side dishes offered too. I enjoyed brisket, sausage, and ribs (not the best ribs... a bit too fatty) and had mashed potato and gravy (just the right amount of lumps in it) plus the mac-n-cheese for sides... superb. We debated on the quality of the sauce. One person I dined with said it was "too vinegary" whereas the other said Donn's is too cheap with the sauce, since they charge for extra cups of sauce. I liked it... less viscosity, thinner, than some other BBQ sauces. Donn's offers dessert of cobblers and puddings (Just curious, what's the deal w/ a lot of BBQ places serving pudding for dessert?) but we passed for today. There's sit down dining tables there, but my relatives seem to always take-out from this location. No views or entertainment, just good BBQ eatin' offered here. To summarize: Texas has BBQ places like Seattle has coffee places and it takes a lot to be top dog. Donn's is by no means bottom rung but it is pretty average. read more

Hubs had a hankering for some BBQ so we came to Donn's. This is pretty straight forward BBQ. The menu is standard- brisket, sausage, turkey, chicken, potato salad, beans, etc..... As with the other reviews I have seen on this place I have to agree it is pretty mediocre. You line up and order what you want and they cut the meat in front of you. I ordered the two meat plate, turkey and chicken with green beans and fried okra. The turkey was better than the chicken, it had a smoked flavor to prove that it was smoked but, I dunno, it just didn't wow me. The green beans, well, I am pretty sure they came out of a can. The fried okra was pretty good, but again I have a sneaking suspicion that they were ordered pre-battered and not made there. All that sounds pretty negative but the entire package tasted ok. Are there better BBQ places out there? Sure. But Donn's will satisfy your BBQ craving just as well. The servers and the guy who rang us up were very nice, and were patient with us forgetting to get our drinks until we were at the register. Oh yeah I almost forgot to mention that if you are on a budget this might be your place. For two for dinner our total was 22 bucks! Pretty cheap. read more

Stopped by here late Friday to pickup food for 4 adults and 3 small kids after reading that the Family Packs were a good deal here on Yelp. Got the 1 lb brisket pack with a pint of slaw and a pint of potato salad. Added a 1/2 lb of turkey and a link of the jalapeno sausage just to be sure we had enough. They throw in a cup of sauce, pickles and onions. Total was about $26. I'm a pretty picky Que eater and have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. The brisket was moist, tender and had a good smoky flavor. The turkey was really good. The jalapeno sausage was lacking in the spicy department but was decent. Good vinegar based sauce. Both sides were good. Donn's is not the place I'd take an out of towner to show them what Texas BBQ is all about but it surely is good solid food at a fair price! read more

This place is exactly what I want from a BBQ joint. The atmosphere is casual and the food is good. They have beef ribs, which are harder to find than you'd think, and great fried okra! The fountain drinks taste okay and they also offer bottled drinks. The staff is always friendly, the tables are clean every time I go, and the trash is emptied often (a must at a bus your own table restaurant). This has become my go to BBQ place. read more

Deelicious! Reasonably priced, fast service, and as good as it gets for my fix of baby back ribs and brisket. I had Rudy's the night before, and it just does not compare to Donn's. I felt the meat here was more tender, jucier (especially the brisket), and just as good in every way. I would make it a point to visit here again the next time I am around the area. The potato salad was great. Cole slaw was just ok - a bit over done. Most importantly though, the flavor of the meat was spot on. Not overly salty, but full of flavor, SUPER tendor, and just perfect. It's like going to a performance at Carnegie Hall, then listening to that same gig on 8 track. The brisket, in fact, may have passed for a moist jerky. Oh snap! Sorry Donn's, I should've had a 14 day statute of limitations around eating Salt Lick nirvana and any other BBQ. Stopped in for breakfast and was surprised by the selection to the point where I know I'll be back. My wife went with the Huevos Rancheros and I got the breakfast special. Hers was a classic set of over medium eggs with a tasty sauce with good sides. Mine was a heap of scrambled eggs with a thick slab of ham along with some good home/cottage fries plus two tasty biscuits with gravey. The gravey was good on everything. My eggs were fluffy and completely cooled thru, no runny bits. I asked for the eggs to have a bit of cheese on top and I got a good handful of cheese. Cheese in every bite of egg. The biscuits dipped in the gravey were nice. Jim's is my normal breakfast choice but these guys have given me a good alternative for breakfast. Gotta go back for some waffles and bacon. Coffee was good to. Remember to order it to eat there or they will serve it to go which does keep you from asking for a to go box if there are leftovers. read more

The sauce was too salty, and a barbecue place without good sauce is pointless. The pulled pork sandwich didn't have pulled pork on it. The pork was some sort of cubed mess that we believe was made from a ham steak and boiled in the sauce rendering it chewy.. The potato salad was made from instant mashed potatoes that honesty hadn't even been stirred smooth. They were gritty with chunks of potato starch that had been blended together with mayonnaise and pickle relish. The pasta in the macaroni and cheese was overcooked. The mystery cheese provided no flavor. It was just salty. The sausage was the texture of jerky. The squash was boiled with no seasoning, not one grain of salt or pepper. The brisket was dry and chewy and had no flavor, no salt, no rub, nothing. The cole slaw was edible. Save your money; you will enjoy your Friday night meal better at McDonald"s. read more

I just got back from a bit of travel - I have been in Chicago, San Francisco, Napa, Las Vegas, and other places - and made a point of trying to find great places to eat in each of them. We even went to Thomas Keller's Bouchon in Yountville- which is supposed to be one of the best restaurants in the United States. It was good, but not nearly as good or satisfying as Donn's (4 miles from my house). I grabbed some take-out BBQ from Donn's last weekend, and in short it was fantastic. I almost passed out it was so good. The brisket and ribs were perfect. The cole slaw as not too sweet - and was cold and crispy. Perfect. The baked beans were homemade and unique. Really good. I think I am going to stop writing now so I can go back to Donns to grab lunch. read more
