The facilities are clean and well-furnished, and the Edison lights provide a nice atmosphere to the dining room. As for the food, there is a generous choice of sides of classic Americana and southern tastes. I tried the brisket burger and it was so good! The portions were gigantic; I could hardly finish my burger and had to take the remainder of my onion rings home. Used to eat at Donn's often when worked in Austin. Used to have great flavor and smoke in the brisket. Not anymore.

I stopped in here for dinner one evening after checking into my hotel by the Airport. I found this place on Yelp - and it sounded promising. I ordered a three meat combo - which comes with your choice of two sides. I selected Brisket, Beef Rib, and Jalapeño sausage, plus green beans and mashed potatoes with gravy, plus a bottle of water. The food came up in short order I sat down to eat - the BBQ was solid, but not mind blowingly outstanding - which is what I am expecting now when I visit Austin. The brisket was a bit on the dry side. The Beef Rib was tasty, but it was also a bit dry, you could tell it had been sitting for a while after cooking. The Jalapeño sausage and Green Beans were really good. In fact, the Green Beans were outstanding! I needed some extra gravy for the mashed potatoes, and they cheerfully doled out an extra side at no charge. The inside of the joint looks like a converted diner. Super friendly counter service, and $8.49 got me a huge Brisket sammich, nice amount of moist meaty goodness, and added jalapeños and warm BBQ sauce, with a side (I chose Mac and Cheese) and a fountain drink! Major value these days! The Mac was cheesy and piping hot, not superb, but better than other Mac's I've tried. Husband got a Bacon C'Burger with Fries. The brisket was top notch. Hardly any fat on it I can't even imagine what the lean brisket will be like. The niche is simple. Provide food, especially on the go, to the everyday Joe. If you're a working person, you'll appreciate the efficiency of the service and the early opening hours. There's a huge menu of tacos, BBQ, burgers, and even a chicken fried steak. There's indoor dining and a walk-up window. I've had both breakfast tacos and a brisket sandwich here. The servings are generous and while not gourmet, they're filling and satisfy your cravings for BBQ or tacos. They've also got excellent iced tea and a full condiment bar. I had a massive coupon for UberEats and found Donn's on the platform because I was craving bbq sides including a loaded baked potato. So, I ordered two huge baked potatoes, a quart of mac and cheese and a quart of creamed corn. Probably not the healthiest meal (s) but I make my own healthy food and buy treats. It was delivered quickly, while it was still hot. The corn was actually almost too hot! I give it four stars because I had low expectations and it met them just fine. It satisfied my baked potato craving and I'm a happy girl! The mac and cheese tastes like cafeteria mac and cheese, but sometimes I like it that way. The creamed corn was sweet and rich and soupy. The baked potatoes were huge, and hard to mess up, but could have used more toppings. This much food will last me for days, and was worth the deal from Uber, but I wouldn't have felt like I got my money's worth in quality if I paid for it. For the same amount of money, you could get slightly better food from bbq chains. I asked for no silverware and minimal packaging but they still wasted a bunch of paper and plastic by sending utensils, napkins, and wrapping the containers in plastic before placing them in bags. It's not too likely I'll be back for more, because there's better bbq in town, and I should just make my own baked potatoes, but if I find myself without potatoes in my kitchen I might come by for a baked potato again. read more

I have ordered from Donn's BBQ quite a few times and consistently for the brisket. Grub Hub is so fast with delivery and the orders are always on time if not a few minutes early. The first few times I ordered the brisket was so perfectly moist but progressively it has gotten to be dried out on the external area. It seems to be getting less flavorful. The brisket seems to be different. It could be that I order late dinners and it is the end of the day as the reason the brisket isn't as fresh and moist. The coleslaw is always predictably delicious. It is not overly drowning in creaminess and sauce but just the perfect amount that keeps the coleslaw tasting fresh and crisp. I am not a fan of soggy coleslaw. I always order a side of Bacon because I don't cook unhealthy things in my home but LOVE bacon (my pup gets a little bite). It is so crispy, thick and relatively a good size. you would hope this to be the case for $3.50 a slice. Will I keep ordering? Probably since it is consistently on time and close. If I find other brisket places in proximity, I will give them a whirl. My hopes is that the Brisket gets back to the original delight it used to have for me. Menudo is a poor people's food. $9.99 for a cup of soup which had pieces of tripe which are way too big. You could at least cut it smaller..and clean it better!! The tripe was inedible. Also...we had to order again because the Door Dasher delivered to the wrong house. If you would just write the house # on the bag, this wouldn't happen. And if it did, at least the folks who got the free food would at least know to whom it belonged & could take it to them. We even called when we reordered and asked you to put our house # on the bag. You did not. We will not order from you again for fear of another wrong delivery - knowing that you refuse to simply put the house # on the bag. We noticed that there was no smoke coming from an alleged BBQ place which made us almost walk away but, we were starving and decided to stay. If you are going to charge $15 for menudo it better be good. Not here. Hardly any flavor, no salt and very gritty. This tells me that it's not fresh or at least more than three days old. Decided to try some other restaurants outside my usual delivery options, so Donn's BBQ was up. If the brisket I got wasn't lean, I dread how dry their lean is. The sausage is good, but I would have preferred to be able to order by the link, not the pound. The chicken was good, but chopped in a strange way; why chop a half of of a chicken into four pieces? what that all from the same chicken? Few Austin 'cue joints have notable sides, and Donn's isn't one of them. The sauce had to be purchased by the pint, and did nothing for any of the meats. The beans? I've had better out of a can. The potato salad? Mashed with mayo and mustard and relish. The fried okra was okay. The peach cobbler? A whole lot of floury-tasting topping that appeared just a few seconds short of burnt, and very little peach. A "small" had about five bites of peaches that had to be fished out of a whole lot of mashed topping. We'd also ordered a catfish plate; the catfish wasn't cooked through. it was still very translucent in the middle, a little pinkish, and the strips were narrow. The crust was thick. That ended up getting tossed. Rudy's is better. I used Rudy's as my Minimally Viable 'Cue (MVC), as it's not the best, but it's OK. Donn's didn't meet that standard. read more
