Great BBQ all around. Fresh homemade tortillas with tender moist Angus beef brisket, tender pork, outstanding chopped beef, an amazing smoked chicken salad. I have never been disappointed with anything on this menu. They have homemade sauces to put on the BBQ if you are a Sauce person. Any other negative reviews are incorrect, don't know real TX BBQ, or were born with silver spoons up their wazoo. Support the local homemade non chain BBQ that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Owners are very nice people and take care of there customers. I'd pick these fellas over Cooper's, Franklin's, Mueller's, or Rudy's any day of the week. Head out to there place. Great food, great service. The tortillas are amazing. I got a large wrap and it was almost more than I could eat, which is saying something. The brisket was the main thing I tried and I think it's perfect. Not too fatty. Not too dry. Not too salty. Some folks may not like it if they lean super heavily in one of those directions, I guess. I thought the side pickles were a bit salty but it actually turned out to compliment the brisket quite well since it wasn't especially salty, which was nice. Though I'd also be down for the pickles being slightly less salty. The sauce was very nice, though sauce isn't usually my thing, it worked well here, though I only used it occasionally. Probably works best in small amounts though that's obviously dependent on preference. I'd highly recommend it. Can't speak for the other meats, but the brisket may be the best I've ever had. Valentina's in Austin is the only other place I can think of that's in the same league. read more

I came for a bbq stuffed baked potato but they sadly didn't have any at the time. It was then that I saw they have nachos. Nachos with brisket! I love a good nacho and these were outstanding. The cheese sauce was a fantastic consistency and had lots of meat on top. Between two of us we were unable to finish the order. I can't wait to get more! I first found Shugabees back in 2012, maybe 2013. It was an immediate hit for me. I loved pretty much everything on the menu. I was able to stay with him for a time when he moved out to Buck's, there in Buda. Then life threw a wrench at me in 2016 and I had to leave Texas for a while. I got back as quickly as I could, ended up in a little town called Kingsland...and Vic had moved further out, finally settling there in New Braunfels. Now, even for Texas, that's a serious drive. IOW, it's been a long time since I've had any of their marvelous que. A couple weeks ago I had to be in Buda for some business and decided to go the distance and renew my acquaintance with Vic...and his scrumptious food. I'm so glad I did! It was that good! Just like I remembered it! As far as I'm concerned Vic makes the BEST BBQ in all the Austin area. Yes! Better than the big name places that get all the hype. That's just MHO. Each to his own. You don't have to agree with me. One last thing... Vic is passionate about what he does. He puts a lot of love into his cooking. When I was there this time he gave me a new (CARROT based!) sauce he recently created. I TELL YOU WHAT!!! It is all that and a bag of chips! The man is a genius! It's THAT GOOD! And just an FYI to the reviewer who accused Vic of giving out store bought, I've asked him about it and he assured me that all his sauces are fresh made. And I believe him. I was aware of the 4.5-Star rating since last fall and had been wanting to give it a shot. So I decided to pop in while driving past last night. I don't like giving a 1-Star review, but this certainly warrants it. My belief is that the food should be just as good on a slow Tuesday as a busy Saturday. The brisket was dry and grey (see the picture below); smoked chicken salad was tasteless; sausage tasted store bought. The pulled pork was average, but again, very very dry. The jalapeno potato salad was good. I was literally the only person in the place on a Tuesday night and yet, it took about 15 minutes for my food to come out. I have come here a couple of times in the last year and the chopped pork and brisket and it is all wonderful. Not to mention there is always prompt and easy going service from Vic, the owner, of Shugabees. We come here for lunch time to pick up food and bring it back to the office without any qualms. I would recommend the jalapeno potato salad and the chocolate (if they have it!) pudding. Reasonably priced and accepts debit & credit cards. Easy drive up and you can always park and enjoy the food in the Bucks patio if you'd like. Careful now as there is construction happening off of the road so you may have to dodge some tractors or trucks as you pull in but Shugabees is easily accessible. read more

WOW! We were pleasantly surprised by how amazing this place was! Decorated with many Hays County awards like "Best BBQ" and "Best Queso" we figured it wouldn't disappoint but we were totally blown away by the tenderness and the portion sizes. Real Texas BBQ y'all! We're BBQ snobs, specializing in brisket and pulled pork. I had initially started a review 2 years ago but didn't finish it. We went yesterday so I decided to follow up. The tortillas are huge, almost like a roti (for those familiar with Trinidadian food) It's the size of an extra-large plate and has a great texture. The BBQ used to be served inside the tortilla, so that was pretty unique. Not anymore. You get two on the side. Not a huge deal, but meh. BRISKET- years ago we loved it because it was super smoky with a great flavor that didn't need sauce. You didn't get any grizzly/fatty pieces and it's used to be more affordable. It's now $24/lb, which is the going rate, but not as valuable as it used to be considering Louis Franks and other BBQ trucks nearby. This time it was just kinda bland and salty. No outside rub like others. It's ok. Better than Bill Millers, but probably not Rudy's or Salt Lick for this price. PULLED PORK- it used to have a great taste due to the marinade. Very bland yesterday and a little dry. You can probably dump a bunch of sauce on it and it wouldn't matter. It's not offensive but not as smoky as they used to make it. You could get pulled pork anywhere and be better off, especially if the price is cheaper. I think pulled pork was $21/lb. CHICKEN SALAD- used to have chunks of chicken and very smoky taste. Seems like the chicken used to be marinated. Not anymore. The chicken is now shredded like tuna salad and has an awful mouthfeel. Not as smoky anymore. Odd flavor. Used to be one of our favorites and now it's not palatable. I tried adding garlic, a hint of lemon, some smoked paprika and it helped but I may just give this to the dog. Seriously. But I don't want her to get sick, so not sure what to do. Please avoid this. You'll regret it...for real. BANANA PUDDING- this is based on what we tried years ago. My husband is very picky about puddings. They're typically not very flavorful. He liked the banana better than the chocolate. Seemed like they make it fresh and it was good but we didn't get it this time. SAUCES- used to be flavorful and unique, but they smelled terrible this time. The standard BBQ sauce...standard. You can probably substitute a store-bought brand and be ok. There's a yellow one that smelled bad. Not sure if it's a mango/orange habanero or what it was but since the smell made me gag I didn't want to taste it. Hubby said it wasn't good. The last sauce was some type of creamy white sauce. Didn't taste like ranch. Not sure what it is, but eww. Overall I'm sad they went downhill. They seem to be following covid guidelines. You can drive up to the window or walk up. They'll bring your food to you. The bar part will open September 5th so we'll see if maybe they take more time to marinate their meats. At least service was decent. read more

Finally caught them open yesterday. The briskette not as good as we remembered, not much flavor. Seemed like it had some type of oil in it to keep it moist, the paper wrapper was soggy. We've been eying this place every time we go to Buck's next door. We finally buckled down and decided to grab a chopped beef sandwich. I expected a traditional finely pulled, sauce doused filling, on a Mrs. Baird's type bun. Nope. The size of the brisket "chop" was substantial enough to fully appreciate that fall apart brisket texture, it was perfectly sauced, so as to enhance not overwhelm the meat, and the bun, OMG. Most places the bun is an afterthought, here it's one of the stars. So soft. So buttery. I can't speak to the rest of the menu, and this is not a cheap sandwich (10ish bucks), but it was totally worth it. read more

So this review is about 10 years overdue. It started back when my kids were in elementary school and Shugabees was on the corner of where there is now a CVS. Back then, Vic gave me a free beenana shugapudding with my usual smoked pork and jalapeño potato salad order and asked if I could leave a review. My kids are no longer little nuggets with oversized backpacks, but in the years since they've grown into 6' teenagers, we have driven the same road home and they still frantically stutter out loud for their favorite meat and tortillas as we approach the trailer location. More often than not I cannot slow down from 65mph to make that left turn, but when we have our act together we are ALWAYS happy to return and be greeted as loyal customers. My order has and will always be the smoked pork in their homemade tortilla with a side of jalapeño potato salad. It has never let me down, not once in 10 years. We also enjoy the brisket wrap as well, but that twang sauce in the pork is heaven for my tastebuds- turn it up with their habanero sauce and ughhhhhh... it's night night time, I'm going to bed with a happy belly. It's been a couple of years (at least) since I've seen Vic in the trailer, but the service and pleasantries with his son are wonderful just the same. We picked up our favorites today in the drive thru and hope to keep coming back for another 10 years. read more

What a delicious find! We moved to Buda 8 months ago. I have passed Shugabees BBQ on my way to Kyle numerous times. Wednesday I decided to stop and pick up dinner. It was FANTASTIC! My husband said the ribs were meatier than most with excellent flavor - he almost gnawed the bones! We also had two sliced brisket sandwiches which were beyond fabulous! We went out to Shugabees for the first time this weekend on our way to float the river - it was one of the best decisions we made that day! I had the pulled pork with the awesome mustard sauce and my boyfriend got the brisket. They wrap their tender and flavorful meat in wonderfully warm handmade flour tortillas - something very unique for a BBQ place (At least in my opinion). I got 1/4 lb. of meat and it was a huge portion, especially with the tortilla! Every bite was delicious. We also got the jalapeno potato salad - if you like a kick of spice, you will LOVE this potato salad!! It has so much flavor and texture, I was not disappointed. Then for dessert, we had the Beenana pudding. This dessert really hit the spot - it has nilla wafers on the bottom and top plus homemade whipped cream. Can't get much better than that! Plus, the owners are super sweet, friendly, and willing to answer as many questions as you have about the menu. WOW! I just ate some of the best beef brisket I have ever had. I pass this place on my way to work every day and decided to finally give it a try. The brisket was delicious and being wrapped in a fresh homemade tortilla made it the perfect road food. I'm not much for BBQ sauce on my brisket but their BBQ sauce was great to dip my brisket tortilla in on alternating bites. I sampled the sausage, the pork, and the chicken salad. All were incredible and I've never been a fan of chicken salad but I will be back soon for a full helping of it. This place is a BBQ Heaven! Can't wait to come back with family and friends. Had very high hopes for this place due to the fact that it was recommended to me and my family multiple times, but went there and wasn't thoroughly impressed. The food is solid but nothing to write home about considering there are a ton of barbecue options in the area. The workers are incredibly friendly and the location is easy to find. I did, however, really like the tortillas they made their barbecue and meals with! I will certainly give it another try in the future, but it may not be high on my list of recommendations for a barbecue in the area. read more

Boy what a disappointment. The business is located now inside a huge dancehall / music venue, Has an urban cowboy look and feel. Went there on a friday afternoon at 3:30. Parking lot and interior empty. Tried to order ribs and was told "they're still cooking". No smoke visible or in the air. This should have been a warning but we pressed on. Chips with queso with hatch chili's turned out to be run of the mill queso with a few green things floating in it. The chips were so oversalted that we couldn't finish them...we literally took a napkin and wiped salt off each chip prior to eating. The brisket was just bad...no smoke, no flavor, and tasted stale. We didn't finish it. At $24/lb I was expecting something special. The sausage was passable...fine ground, but I'm not sure if they make it or just smoke it. at $18/lb it was way overpriced. My wife and I both had bad indigestion that evening from the food. We went here because my brother in law used to love them. But I agree with others. I moved to Buda about two years ago -- never really went to explore. Today I had a HANKERIN for some good BBQ. Decided to chek out Shugabees because of all the good reviews. I'm used to seeing 5-Star restaurants in Austin, and they usually are good but not damn good... SHUGABEES IS DAMN GOOD. Made the 8 min. drive out to this tiny trailer in a huge parking lot. I park and knock on the window as the sign instructs. Out pops a gentleman who recommends the jalapeno tater salad as a side. I love brisket -- I ordered 1/2 lb marbled, 1/4lb sausage, jalapeno tater salad and remember to get a dessert. Banana pudding. I get home and to my surprise, the sausage and brisket are wrapped in two large homemade tortillas! They're nicely packaged separately in some butcher paper. The smell is amazing. I open up the tortilla and take a bite. The tortilla has that soft but slightly powdered texture to it. It's still delicately thin, but thick enough where it won't tear unless intentional. Perfection! The brisket is extra moist! Love the fat to meat ratio. Great flavor. The sausage is divine. Has a nice bite to the casing. I'd rank it top 3 sausage I've had. Maybe Franklins is more of a crunch but this is def. good too.. I don't really like sweets. I don't really like banana pudding. I LOVE THEIR BANANA PUDDING. It's not too sweet, it's cold, and it has cute little nilla wafer cookies that are still very crunchy so you know they put the cookies on when you order. Overall, amazing. VERY GOOD BBQ. My dad loves, loves, loves Shugabees! He talks about it constantly & whenever he's in town visiting, it's a "must-stop" for him. With that in mind, 99% of the times I've been to Shugabees was with my old man & I like them as well. My dad goes crazy over their chicken salad wrap. As for me, when it comes to BBQ I like the more traditional fare so I normally get the brisket wrap & 'tater salad, even though that thick tortilla fills you up really fast! My brisket from Shugabees has never been ridiculously dry but I honestly feel that it lacks the flavor of other brisket's that I've had in Austin, Lockhart, San Marcos, etc. BBQ sauce should not be necessary when eating truly delicious BBQ yet I find myself reaching for the sauce every time I eat a brisket taco here. But otherwise, Shugabees is great & aside from my old man, they do have their loyalists who help keep them going down at the Painted Horse Pavilion. As long as my dad keeps going there I'll keep going there, & will enjoy my moist brisket taco while doing some catching up & other father/son bonding stuff that doesn't get to happen often enough. read more

I really really wanted to like this place after all of my neighbors have always said this place was amazing. One Friday during lunch, I finally decided to give it a try. I ordered brisket, sausage, potato salad and dessert. On the positive end, I did get my food quickly. The sausage wrap was wrapped in a tortilla. The sausage was a bit overcooked and was probably the only good thing I had there. The guy at the window ranted and raved about how they cook their brisket. Their brisket was just ok. It had zero smoke flavor and it seemed like the rub was nothing more than salt and pepper and you could hardly taste the spice. The potato salad was good. I have had better potato salad elsewhere. The dessert was decent. It had chocolate chips along with the pudding. My oldest son tried it and he immediately stated he did not care for it. I did try the BBQ sauce. Again, I was not impressed. It almost tasted like something they got from a cheap bottle at the grocery store. I have done Texas Monthly's top 50 BBQ restaurant in Texas tour.
