My dad loves, loves, loves Shugabees! He talks about it constantly & whenever he's in town visiting, it's a "must-stop" for him. With that in mind, 99% of the times I've been to Shugabees was with my old man & I like them as well. My dad goes crazy over their chicken salad wrap. As for me, when it comes to BBQ I like the more traditional fare so I normally get the brisket wrap & 'tater salad, even though that thick tortilla fills you up really fast! My brisket from Shugabees has never been ridiculously dry but I honestly feel that it lacks the flavor of other brisket's that I've had in Austin, Lockhart, San Marcos, etc. BBQ sauce should not be necessary when eating truly delicious BBQ yet I find myself reaching for the sauce every time I eat a brisket taco here. But otherwise, Shugabees is great & aside from my old man, they do have their loyalists who help keep them going down at the Painted Horse Pavilion. As long as my dad keeps going there I'll keep going there, & will enjoy my moist brisket taco while doing some catching up & other father/son bonding stuff that doesn't get to happen often enough. read more

I really really wanted to like this place after all of my neighbors have always said this place was amazing. One Friday during lunch, I finally decided to give it a try. I ordered brisket, sausage, potato salad and dessert. On the positive end, I did get my food quickly. The sausage wrap was wrapped in a tortilla. The sausage was a bit overcooked and was probably the only good thing I had there. The guy at the window ranted and raved about how they cook their brisket. Their brisket was just ok. It had zero smoke flavor and it seemed like the rub was nothing more than salt and pepper and you could hardly taste the spice. The potato salad was good. I have had better potato salad elsewhere. The dessert was decent. It had chocolate chips along with the pudding. My oldest son tried it and he immediately stated he did not care for it. I did try the BBQ sauce. Again, I was not impressed. It almost tasted like something they got from a cheap bottle at the grocery store. I have done Texas Monthly's top 50 BBQ restaurant in Texas tour. Ok, so I've gone back 2 more times since my last review. The brisket is still delicious as usual. We tried the chicken salad which was pretty good, not a fan of olives, but other than that it wasn't bad. We finally got to try the sausage and well, it wasn't that great. The casing was way too tough and the sausage itself was lacking in flavor. Very boring sausage. We also finally got to try the orange habanero sauce. I'm not sure if they messed up the batch or what but it tasted like and had the consistency of watered down honey. No heat and no orange flavor. It was a huge sticky mess. WOW! Drove by the place on the way home for as long as it's been open and finally tried it. The Q was great, as good as it gets with only a few exceptions. I think Franklins and Muellers are both better, but not by much. The brisket was moist, tender and most importantly, very flavorful. It had a thin layer of black and had a great flavor. The sausage was also very good. My wife said the potato salad was very good and we both liked the banana pudding. Meaning to visit this Hays County establishment not named Salt Lick since moving to Buda last summer, today was finally the day Shugabees got the Andre treatment. Having arrived shortly before 11, the owner was all smiles and glad to give me the lay of the land but being, literally, a meat and potatoes guy, I opted for the moist brisket, some sausage and the jalapeño potato salad. I must say that for an unsuspecting trailer on the side of the road, Shugabees knocks it out of the park! That jalapeño potato salad slowly sneaks up on your taste buds to give them a little spicy kick, just to get a taste but without hurting your mouth. That moist brisket, dripping with grease from the butcher paper, really hit the spot. I got the default BBQ sauce they put in the bag and they weren't much to write home about but then again I despise BBQ sauce. It tasted a little too sweet, but who knows, it might have worked well to with the smoky taste of the moist brisket. Get there early, otherwise they start running out of stuff according to the owners. read more

This is decent, roadside barbecue especially while waiting for the Jiffy Lube next door to finish your oil change. Great business model! That being said, I thought my smoked pork was a little dry and the jalapeno potato salad was pretty standard fare. The sauces, however, are phenomenal. Personally, I prefer pork sauces to have a little vinegar in them so the mustard chipotle wasn't exactly my speed for this cut of meat. The fiery habanero, however, was a great accompaniment to the brisket. And they also have a honey habanero sauce that would be perfect on some fried chicken if they started serving that. I tend to agree with a previous reviewer that I have to put Franklin and Louie Mueller's in Taylor as my top BBQ places, but Shugabees is outstanding and, since I live in the area, quite convenient. Shugabees brisket blows away Salt Licks. I debated between 4 and 5-star, and my true rating would be something like a 4.5, just a hair below Muellers / Franklin. Here there are no 4-hr lines, for sure! I love the homemade tortillas, and the brisket is outstanding and my favorite thing here. Also excellent pork butt. I like the mustard blend and habanero "sting" salsas best. Large portions (a 1/2 lb brisket wrap can feed two people or 1 very hungry person). The jalapeno potato salad is great, as good as John Muellers on E 7th. The banana pudding is also great, maybe the best I've ever had. The smoked chicken salad is maybe the best chicken salad I've had. I have not tried the sausage. Shugabees isn't a traditional Q place in that they don't have ribs, beans, etc., but what they do have they do VERY well. Try it and feel some Texas love. read more

The food is great!! I ordered the "small" which was a huge portion of brisket (1/4 pound) in a large tortilla. The tortilla is homemade and one of the best that I've tasted! The brisket was moist and very well cooked (and this is coming from a BBQ snob). I'm not a big fan of mustard but the chipotle mustard sauce was great and so was the original sauce. And honestly, you don't really need any sauce at all (which determines what is and is not good BBQ in my opinion). To top it all off, the service was great. Surprised and disappointed by our experience, after reading the reviews. First, all of the meats are served in a wrap, i.e. basically a brisket burrito. The texture was uniformly mushy; some alternative taste/texture components would have been a big improvement. Guy working in the trailer had the music up too loud, esp. considering it was in the middle of the afternoon and we were literally the only customers. What really annoyed me was that he made no effort at all to inquire about or recommend their BBQ sauce(s). Our food was served without it, nor was it available at a condiment table or some such outpost that we could see, and dude was so lackadaisical that I figured why should I have to ask for sauce when it's a BBQ joint? -- supposedly. I would definitely not go back to this place. As to the review that suggested this place deserves the nod over the 'Salt Lick', well... consider this: The Salt Lick venue, which we drove by after leaving Shugabees, had what looked like a hundred cars in their parking lot. I really like this place. They don't have a huge selection but everything we have had is pretty good. My husband likes the pork with the chipolte mustard sauce and I always get the chicken salad with no olives. We were both hoping for a little more kick in the jalapeno potato salad but it still wasn't bad. Once in a while they run out of things which is a bummer but its pretty understandable with BBQ joints.
