Great quality Japanese/ Korean with yummy lunch sets which include sides such as steamed egg, porridge, mackerel with radish, broccoli. I ordered the udon lunch set which comes with a tuna roll and shrimp/ sweet potato tempura. My sister ordered the raw fish rice bowl with mixed vegetable which comes with miso soup. Food is always tasty and we always leaves fully satisfied. The decor is clean and minimal but they have 1 table with a very pretty cherry blossom tree which needs to be reserved in advance. They have 4 private rooms which also be can reserved. Service was good and waiter came by to refill our tea cups. This restaurant is a-little on the pricer side but I think it's worth it for lunch. TLDR: Korean raw fish restaurant. If you're looking for hae/hwe, there's not too many options out there as it's kind of a niche concept but Dongwon is definitely good for groups. I'd stick with a set menu, although last time I had tuna - I think the mixed sashimi seems to be the way to go. Came with a group of four. This place is way bigger than it looks like on the outside. Overall the set menu was decent, sides were good enough but we got the bluefin tuna on our visit. My one issue is that most of the tuna is cold, borderline ice cold. This makes the fattier cuts of tuna, i.e. medium fatty, extra fatty, fatty collar basically tuna with solid blocks of fat. Personally between the temperature and the chewy fat chunks - I'd probably stick with a live fluke or flounder sashimi. Again, this may be a personal preference for me. The spicy soup was solid and I liked the hot rice with the roe. I'd try it again but would probably just get fluke. Very clean spot though and nice servers. read more

My first Korean raw fish restaurant! The Bay Area in CA can never. Dongwon is definitely good for groups as there is a variety and large portions. My friend brought us here when we were visiting. We came with a group of four. Overall, the set menu was yummy. We chose the blue fin tuna set. We also ordered grilled eel. The set menu came with a generous selection of sides. My one issue is that most of the tuna was ice cold--almost frozen. After it defrosted a bit, the texture was way better. My favorite of the sides were: abalone, raw marinated shrimp, and soup! read more

Came with the gf for lunch as we pive nearby and have always wanted to try this place as we've heard about it and we always pass by thier iconic tuna sign. The inside and decor is fun and vibrant. We were seated at our table and took a look at thier menu. 1 small thing to mention is that is a little confusing for non Koreans to read but were in the korean section of northern blvd so understandable. We order the sushi/sashimi combo for 2 and a small bottle of sake to share. The first things they bring out was a course of bonchon/ side dishes to eat. We weren't expecting this as the menu didn't say anything about this (at least not in english) and there were no photos to compare. But again it is a Korean restaurant and it's more food than we expected. We had a side dish of spicy squid (cut up raw squid mixed with a spicy sauce) and we noticed the squid was still frozen solid and there ice flakes at the center of the dish. We picked at the more thawed out outsides and left the rest as it was inedible. The soup they served with the sides didn't taste much of anything but hot water and jalapeño. The rest of the side dishes were fine and we're quite good. Surprisingly we thought thought the fried chicken and whole fish was the best (which we thought odd for a seafood place). The sushi/sashimi came out and it looked beautiful as they serve it on a huge wooden board with garnishes. About half of the food on there was edible. Some of the sushi pieces were cut up to help tenderize the flesh and make it easier to chew others had 3 or so cuts in it and felt like you were chewing a belt. Both me and my gf had pieces that we could not chew and had to spit up on a tissue. Then as we tried a piece of the tuna sashimi we notice that only the 2 pieces of. The outside are thawed out enough to chew the 3 or so other pieces are frozen with ice flakes around the center. I finally had enough and decided to flag down out waiter and ask hi. Why the tuna is still frozen. So he takes the small serving dish it was on the the sushi chef and come back and places it BACK in my table and explains that this is normal. I understand tuna is flash frozen to kill parasites but from i know it is thawed out before given to customers, so I ask "you serve the tuna to customers frozen?" The waiter replies yes and walks away I ask for the bill and they give a small cup of yogurt with some toppings as a free dessert. The bill was about $180 for 2 people Let me be clear this was not the worst sushi/sashimi I've ever had but they are charging omakase prices for local mom and pop sushi joint quality sushi at best. This was in no way worth the amount I paid for and I hope this honest (and subjective) review serves as a warning for others. They seem to push for a quantity over quality type of experience, as there was ALOT of food but nothing actually good read more

Every single thing had its own distinct flavor apart from the others. As soon as you finish, the plates are cleared for you. Main course had a beautiful display of sashimi on rocks. Beware of the 4th course spicy stew - there are stray fish bones. The stew is traditionally like that. The meal is finished off with lychee juice. I've been here 4 times in the past 2 months and I love love love the food and service here! Especially the grilled fish lunch sets! The fish comes out nicely charred and it's the whole fish! Get the refund mackerel or the Korean mackerel "Sam-Chee" for an additional $2. Def worth it! Really buttery and flaky! Feeling adventurous today and found this spot on google and Yelp with decent reviews but was kinda disappointed with our experience today. Mostly because it was pricey for what you get, not really worth it imo. I noticed the banchan from other tables were different than what we got (they had more items with corn, takoyaki and some other stuff that we didn't get), either because they ordered a different type or maybe because we didn't speak Korean. We got the sushi & sashimi combo for 3-4, each person got 13 pieces in my group of 4 and with some side dishes the price came out to be about $55 per person with tip and taxes. I wasn't too hungry today but if I was, the portion would be quite small. My group left all feeling a bit unsatisfied, usually with these meals the banchan would fill us up or the fish itself but this one was not that much food (lucky we weren't that hungry or I'd be so upset if I left still feeling hungry and needed a second meal after spending so much here already). I recommend coming here with Korean friends so you might get more items. Not a place I'd recommend to others from an average experience. I'd almost recommend other AYCE Korean BBQ spots in the area for the price you're paying or even just getting platters with more food that'll fill you up from sushi spots in the area. This place was amazing! At first, the outside was not obvious, and not knowing the Korean language seemed quite intimidating. It is one of those, you never know if things will work out or not. Turns out, the greeters were very friendly and everyone was consistently helpful and attentive. Also, their take-out process seemed busy. Even though this place is set in a predominantly Korean area, there were people of all races/backgrounds ordering/waiting for their meals. It was a very awesome sight to see and be a part of! I also got a quick glimpse of their reservation information just out of curiosity. For a Monday, they were almost entirely booked for the evening. So that was reassuring that the location really has a lot of activity going on - which explains their turnovers to consistently incorporate fresh ingredients on their menu. As for prices, it is on the high side, but the main attraction was really the AMOUNT OF FOOD and the freshness of all the ingredients. Even the garnish was super fresh (kale), and the presentation was of a fine-dining calibre. Most of the reviewers have the same feedback on freshness and their take on the high-end dining factors. For the price and the quantity plus the key in providing excellent ingredients, it was all worth it. There were the usual korean small tapas that they give in the beginning. When you order the SET - be totally prepared. They give a looot. Definitely can be shared! Then to top it all off at the end of your stay, they provide a freshly-made fruit concoction for all members of your group. It is quite an ordeal. You leave the place not only full, but having been part of a cultural experience to partake in. This is my second time coming here on a special occasion for the Tuna platter and they sure don't disappoint! Last year I came here with my boyfriend and got the Tuna platter (medium) and it was way too much for 2 people, so this year we got the small and it was just enough before our stomachs exploded! If you get the Tuna platter, everything comes out little by little so there is no awkward pauses of eating and the service is really fast and good. The tuna itself is really FRESH and just melts in your mouth. With all the other sides that come out, you'll definitely leave full and very satisfied. FYI you can't bring home any food that's leftover because the quality of the tuna deteriorates, so you must finish everything in the restaurant! The small platter came out to be close to $200. Note- I saw that there were cute booths upstairs for parties (up to 6). For my party of 9, the server recommended that we get two "Large Combination Sets" (which stated served 4 people each). I was worried that it wouldn't be enough food but BOY did I NOT need to worry. Imagine a chipotle burrito spilling out rice and beans- except the burrito was actually me. We were delighted by seafood porridge, oysters, abalone, tempura, natto/squid salad, raw marinated shrimp, fried fish, cheese corn and that's just to name a few! The combination sashimi platter arrived and my party was already 80% full! The sashimi was fresh and was plated aesthetically, perfect for those Insta pics! And just when you thought you couldn't eating anything else, they hit you with the spicy seafood soup with egg roe rice. The tuna all came out ice cold and melt-in-your mouth delicious. The set also comes with dishes including tempura, grilled fish, oysters, sushi, korean soup, congee, rice and takoyaki balls. My favorite part is the fresh served wasabi. It tastes light and really fresh! Dongwon also serves sea squirts, sea cucumbers, scallops and many other fresh seafoods - a little something for everyone! We had 7 people and ordered the variety of sashimi for 7. The amount of side dishes and food that came out besides the sashimi was amazing, I can't even remember all of the kinds that were brought out. Each person also gets their own hot egg rice bowl along at the end. Despite the great quality of the sashimi (it even had some edible gold sprinkled on it) and the impeccable presentation of everything, as many other reviewers have mentioned it is quite expensive. The sushi rolls that are brought out are cream cheese stuffed which, at least for me, is not what you would expect given the rest of the food quality. I'll also note that there aren't really many big places for groups to sit. With 7 people we had to squish 4 on one side that was not meant for 4 chairs. I would like to give this a 4.5 if that was possible, as I usually reserve my 5's for places with great food and reasonable pricing, but I do recommend this place just be aware of the steep price. read more
