I've been to the original location in Miller Place and have loved it but recently moved to Ronkonkoma from Sound Beach and thought my husband and I would give it a try for lunch. I don't feel TERRIBLE writing a less than stellar review for Don Quijote, as I can tell this place does an amazing business with plenty of customers. We visited on a Wednesday night at 6 and it was packed. The good: Really pretty, intimate setting, perfect for a date and also terrific for larger parties to meet; it was super crowded but our party of 5 was able to hear each other fine. Great service. The fried plantains were easily the most delicious I've ever had; I'd have liked an entire plate of them. The bad: Salsa tasted like Spaghetti -O sauce and it was WARM. Ugh! Chips were cheap, not salted, and stale. A small guacamole for $10 was ADEQUATE, but expensive for such a small serving. Prices seemed prohibitively high for what was served, and this was the first time at a Mexican restaurant that I've been served a weird little salad with ginger dressing before the meal. (Huh?) Fajitas and our other chicken dishes looked more like they were prepared Chinese-food style, and were generally bland. Mexican food is easily our favorite and our bar is set pretty high with many great choices in our hometown; for those who aren't especially picky about their Mexican food, this would probably do in a pinch. read more

The tortillas were hard, the beans tasted like Rosarita canned beans, and my plate had a huge chip on it. I pointed this out to our waiter who was disinterested. Really great. The black bean soup: They nail it. However, overall the menu needs some serious work: More vegetables other than the prerequisite onions and peppers in a veggie fajita, please. Green beans and mushrooms are OK but how about seasonal fresh choices added in? The mofongo was mostly too dry. It's not a traditional mofongo from my limited experience, which includes the juices of a nice pollo or lechon. Only bacon, which I skipped on. The drinks, too much mix and not enough alcohol. But loyalty includes atmosphere, staff and potential. Let's hope Don Quijote not merely chasing windmills but really going after being The Spot for authentic homespun cuisine. read more

We went back and lo and behold it was delicious. Even the chips and salsa have been improved. The waitstaff is friendly and yes it's still expensive for Mexican but when the food is good that's OK. There is a singer/guitarist that goes around to the tables which is a tad too loud.....i had the Cuban style steak which was pretty good but nothing to rave over.... overall it was a passable experience. I've eaten at DQ in Patchogue, twice so far. The atmosphere is nice, the people are nice and the food is good. I had Ropa Vieja once and I had the Skirt Steak. Both were delicious. It's tough to impress a Puerto Rican like myself who's grown up around great Spanish food and I must say; DQ is right up there with the best of this Cusine and style of cooking. I have been here before and had great food and service. Do not know what the issue was on 2/29/2020 we arrived with a party of 11 and were seated. Orders were taken food was delivered as were drinks. After that one of our party had to get up and take the water jug from the cart to refill us as the entire staff watched. Noone came over during the entire meal. Pitcher of sangria ran dry, water dry. The woman who was waiting our table gave us the check we paid and left. We called to talk to the manager and guess what it was the woman who waited on us. By far, my favorite Mexican restaurant on Long Island!! My boyfriend and I have ate here multiple times and have even brought our friends and family to enjoy with us. The food is AMAZING. Their lunch menu is smaller but still so good. The dinner menu is amazing! The breaded chicken and the chicken & shrimp dinner plates are both so good. Their dessert menu is my favorite. I never eat dessert at restaurants until we started getting dinner here. The place is nicely decorated. A little small and can get crowded on weekends, but it isn't that big of a deal. My favorite dinner companion and I were looking for a Mexican/Spanish place with outdoor seating for a beautiful day and came upon this place on Yelp, so we figured we'd give it a Go. Considering we walked in and asked for outside seating I can't comment on the vibe or decor but the outer patio was clean and well kept. Luckily it is in the front / shady side of the building. A small band started at 7 as we were winding up but we enjoyed the place so much we hung in there for the set. it was nice listening to music that wasn't blasting at you and you can still maintain a conversation. I couldn't believe nobody else wanted to sit outside. Food-wise, my wife was very happy with her app of the stuffed plantain and her taco dinner. I went safe with the arroz con pollo which is a pretty bland dish itself, but that's why I get the side of beans and drop it on top. I thought it was good. Had a couple/three Margheritas and they were as good as they should be. The service was excellent from Kathlyn, who was as efficient as she was adorable. I like smiley people. DO NOT GO HERE. I know you'll see some 5 star reviews, but I'm quite certain that the owners offer free drinks to people who give nice reviews. THE FOOD IS AWFUL. When do you EVER see those vegetables in a Mexican restaurant, let alone as vegetable fajita? Now here comes one of the worst parts: THE GREEN BEANS WERE STRAIGHT FROM A CAN! I kid you not. I'm 100% positive they were straight from a can. They were cut into those little pieces, they were terribly salty, and they were disgustingly SOGGY. Straight from a can. What could be worse than serving soggy green beans from a can? I can't say if this is worse, but it's equally as bad: Store bought tortillas. I'm quite sure I have the same brand of tortilla's in my cabinet as we speak. A Mexican restaurant that doesn't make fresh tortillas? What a disgrace. Now, my friend got the Carne Asada. The lowest quality steak you can imagine. It looked like road kill that had been sitting in the sun for 2 weeks. It looked like something you'd get from a middle school cafeteria. Was looking forward to a good margarita. ...not here. Tried a classic margarita and they use mix out of a gun for the basic drink. Sent it back, probably paid double, then realized that they use straight table salt instead of margarita salt. When I inquired about it, the bartender said we are trying not to get too fancy. Salsa and chips are not homemade. Yuck... Not much has changed since prior owner. Looks exactly the same and I happen to think it is the same owner as before. Phenomenal Mexican and Latin cuisine restaurant. Not many tables and small bar area but it feels very cozy in the restaurant. Guacamole is always a good option, but they also have excellent e.panadas and the chicken wings are an excellent change to the normal Mexican cuisine. My husband and I came here for the first time to have lunch today. We were very disappointed. The prices seemed quite high to be the lunch menu. The chips on the table were all different thicknesses (most too thick for me to enjoy) and my husband commented that the salsa seemed like it was from a jar. My shrimp quesadilla was mediocre and my husband's eggs rancheros were overcooked. The waitstaff seemed indifferent that we were there and we sat in a corner while they focused on a large party that arrived halfway through our meal. Rushing from work to get there five minutes before it ends will not work. The owner or manager has seen us frequently and would not honor happy hour at 5:55 p.m. We rushed there! Check which drinks are happy hour, Although making awesome flavored margaritas and giving you an actual margarita menu, none of those drinks are apart of happy hour. A margarita can cost you $15 immediately after happy hour for your second. These are Manhattan prices. Food is always good. Again, pricey. Then their Don Quixote nachos, made with pulled chicken and beef, a greasy, cheesy sodden 6 individually-made nachos. On six chips with jarred pickled jalapeños on top, messily plated with a spoon of guacamole, and another of sour cream on top of some shredded iceberg lettuce in the middle. I kid you not. Strike two. Then a chicken burrito made with a spinach green wrap and filled with chicken and cheese, iceberg lettuce and Uncle Ben's rice. Not a fresh herb or chili in sight. Completely tasteless. I left it on the plate and asked for the check. The clueless waiter never asked if there was a problem. Strike three. No need to return. I have never seen such careless food made with so little love. With so many hispanic restaurants out there, please skip this one. This place had alright food but for the price, the money was definitely not worth it. I went with my family and it's typical for us to share food with each other. They charge you $5 for every plate you share. That added up fast. The price was too much, the steak started out at $20 (no lower options) and went up to $40. I'm sorry but I've gone to many Hispanic restaurants and the Carne Asada always varies and starts out at usually $12-14. I understand that business must make money but when you are just getting steak, rice, and beans, $20 is too much!! Anyways, after we received out bill, we are obviously not happy. They make a mandatory 20% Gratuity Charge, which is already included into the bill. I always tip nicely but making the customer have to pay an automatic charge into your bill is outrageous.
