4 piece fried chicken, onion rings and apple sauce. (To go)
Chris S.

Food- Got chicken carry out. So can't speak about inside. But fried chicken was amazing! Good old fashion fried chicken. Super moist. Crispy. Onion rings, again super crispy and flaky. Even for carry out. Wish I had some hot sauce for the chicken! Just reminded me of what fried chicken used to taste like before the chains came along. Service - very friendly staff and helpful at to-go counter. Over all one the best traditional fried chickens in the Midwest.

Onion Rings

My mom and I stopped here for an early lunch, they were just switching over from the breakfast menu. We were seated in a booth, in a not-too crowded dining room. But not so empty that it was awkward either. Just right, really, with a few groups that were definitely regulars. Our friendly waitress was well seasoned and knew what we would want before we had to ask. We both got the Sizzlin Cobb Salad, mine with ranch and hers with poppy seed. I have to say it was one of the best salads I've had in a long time. First off it was huge. It also came with 2 garlic breadsticks what were warmed. Amazing. The salad had plenty of bacon, chicken and boiled egg. Lots of tomato and almonds too. The iceberg was cold and fresh. I liked that the dressing came on the side, and I could use the cute little individual pitcher to pour on the amount I wanted. We also shared some onion rings, which were very tasty. Overall, a good place for a quick lunch that isn't fast food. I'm sure we will be back.

Meatloaf meal

They greet us with warmth upon arrival. It's a quiet place to dine in before 4pm. Hall's tossed salad was great. Meatloaf was big. It comes on bread, mashed potatoes with and big crispy onion ring. I would go again and try more items.

Prime rib 10 oz medium rare

Restaurant review This is one of those restaurants that jump back a few decades into the past to a bygone era of low prices and no-frills staff. I have been here twice and I can honestly say that the prices are amazing for 2019. Where else can you get a prime rib dinner 10 for 15 dollars or a filet mignon meal for 12 dollars. Now is this going to be Ruth Chris, of course not, but if you go in with the right expectations you won't be disappointed. They have a large parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. You can't miss the iconic sign with the real name of the restaurant "Hall's State St Prime Rib". Both times I have gone for the prime rib and I would say that the quality of the prime rib is better than any buffet I have been to but not at the level of Lawry's in Chicago. The wait staff is prompt and very friendly. The prime rib meal came with hot dinner rolls and some sort of texas toast without the garlic flavor. The main attraction was the prime rib which was cooked to medium-rare perfectly. There wasn't too much seasoning unfortunately to it so the horseradish sauce was utilized liberally. Meat was tender and juicy, however, the color was slightly pale compared to other medium rare prime rib I had in the past. The mac and cheese side is an A+ for not being the Kraft variety and you can't go wrong with a baked potato with sour cream. Overall for the price you pay it is a great experience. Pros: super low prices, ample parking, friendly staff, no significant wait Cons: the ambiance throws you back to the 70s, given that it is not in the city there are flies sometimes bothering you during your meal Hidden deals: Daily specials on the board when you walk in. Seniors have a special meal menu as well. Super cheap prime rib for lunch or dinner!

Sizzlin Cobb without the pesky tomatoes

I'm three weeks into a seven week stay in Fort Wayne. This place has the most delicious salads. Obviously! Because every time I remember to take my phone out to take a picture, I'm halfway through my meal. Service is great, everyone is friendly. My co-workers also like the burgers and chicken sandwiches. They have diet Mountain Dew which I love!! They are social distancing tables. Overall, a great experience and will see you soon!

The fried chicken

Why I choose 4 stars: great food, depending on what your looking for, and service I always order a 10pc fired chicken no thighs. They readily accommodate my request and the chicken is served hot and fresh. It's seasoned well considering most places offer a blander fare. I don't generally stray to much from the chicken. I can attest the green beans are good as well. The buster platter will forever remain a favorite of my youth. The price is feasible 11.99 for the 10pc which puts them a could dollars less than traditional chicken restaurants. The building is small with easy access in and out. Efficient and friendly staff. This is my moms favorite take out, so I'm pretty regular here when I'm having dinner with her.

Laycoff's Tavern (near Granite City/Target, North Clinton St) - iconic place with good pizza…read more Laycoff's is a fun little place to frequent. It doesn't seat a lot of people. So...you might have to wait for a table. Unfortunately there isn't space for a nice waiting area. So you might stand up in the small bar area while you wait. It's okay. Things move fast. Enjoy the people watching opportunity. The team here is very friendly and welcoming in an odd way. They really are glad to serve you. Lots of smiles and friendly smiles. They are efficiently-friendly. They all move and talk fast. They are hustling to serve - not avoid. They will take a moment to get to relate...but not much more than a moment. The service is very good! The Sullivan family is very nice as well. Laycoff's is known for sausage rolls and a community bar environment. My wife loves her sausage roll. Full of tasty cheese surrounded by a light, fluffy and soft dough. The American sausage blended in with the cheese nicely. The menu has a small number of specialty pizzas (only six) along with build-your-own option. The prices are pretty comparable to other bars. On this occasion I got a 16" Everything pizza for $20. A 16 inch pizza was a LOT of delicious pizza. The pizza crust is thin. It is thin enough that almost every bit has a slight crunch. However, it was also soft enough to satisfy the less than crunchy crowd. The crust doesn't have much distinct flavor or seasoning. Just a nice thin crust. The pizza sauce was also hard to distinguish. The pizza is so full of toppings and cheese that you really don't see the sauce. The sauce that was they are blended well with the American sausage base. Now the best part - the fresh toppings! Laycoff's uses the Pizza King approach by using finely chopped toppings. The base of the Everything pizza is a finely ground American sausage. The base of the pizza so completely covered with sausage on the Everything choice. The sausage doesn't have much spice or flair as it is American style instead of Italian. The pepperoni is very thin. The fresh and slightly crunchy onions and peppers are chopped into small pieces. Even the green and black olives seemed to be smaller. The whole pizza was coated in delicious tasting mozzarella cheese. As I mentioned the 16 inch pizza is a large pizza. Laycoff's cuts the pizza into large pieces as well. This pizza could easily feed 3-4 people. Cold Pizza Test - I always want to try the pizza the next morning, cold, and for breakfast. This pizza was outstanding cold and as a left over. The coldness causes the mozzarella cheese taste to really come forward. The saltiness of the olives gets bolder. The bed of sausage and cover of cheese really help keep the pizza moist. The crust stayed a bit soft with a slight crunch. Overall, I really liked the pizza. It wasn't outstanding. However, it was really good at a good value. Dinning at Laycoff's has a sense of memorabilia and nostalgia. Be patient and enjoy the environment.

I guess I'll skip to the end when I got my check, and was completely shocked to learn that I had a fantastic meal and an excellently made spritz, plus dessert, for a shockingly low price. I even double-checked the check, to make sure they didn't accidentally leave something off. No! How could it be? It turns out that I was visiting Rune during happy hour, which is Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 6 p.m. This could be why my bill was so agreeable. So, if you're looking for a great meal for a great price, visit during happy hour. So, the spritz. Literally every table ordered the spritz while I was there, including me. It was a great choice, and it looked especially pretty and ombre in a glass with ice. Like any good spritz, it had just enough alcohol to make things sparkle a little, but was also refreshing and hydrating. I made a note in my phone to remember that the bartender used words like "vegetal" and "herbaceous" when talking about some of the cocktails to the people sitting at the bar. I love a good vegetal, herbaceous drink, and it made me want to order another cocktail. Instead, I ordered the green spaghetti from the happy hour menu, which is a paired down menu, but has a lot of the items from the regular menu. The spaghetti was bright green from a pesto made from ramps, nori butter and parmesan, and there were also bits of clams throughout. It was rich and buttery! Ramps are one of those things that I have to get when I see them on a menu during the spring. They're only around for a short time, so they're precious. For dessert, I went with the pot de creme, which was flavored with pho spices (cinnamon, anise, coriander, cardamom, fennel, etc.) and had peanuts and chocolate on the bottom. Holy fudgy bottom! This was the smoothest, most balanced dessert I've eaten in a long time. Smooth, but with the occasional peanut here and there to make things interesting. The service was excellent. I was dining by myself, so I got seated at a cozy little table, lit with a candle, that was off to the side but also in the center of everything, so I could people watch, which is one of my favorite things to do. I wanted for nothing the entire time, but was also left the eff alone. It was perfect. It was one of the best dining experiences I've had that I can remember.
