The decor is country comfortable, with handmade art and other touches. Friendly staff and customers all made us feel like regulars, and the food was exactly what we'd expected. The place is small and fills up fast and since it was just us two at a four top, we invited another couple to join us. This is a rare occurrence, as my spouse is not real outgoing, but soon we were chatting like casual friends over a meal. The menu is breakfast and lunch (they close at 2pm) and they have all the usual items, but with a made-at-home feel. I had French toast and bacon and the bread was very thick and flavorful, and the bacon was better than average. Coffee is included in the price of the meal and was good, too. If you're driving west from Auburn and taking the path less traveled, time to visit Avilla and get fed!

Big Eyed Fish on Wells Street - when you have a craving for Fish & Stroh style fish and tarter…read moresauce Yes, I know that I could go to Stroh to get this old time flavor. However, Big Eyed Fish is pretty good fish in its own right, local...and flavored like the taste I remember from the past. We visited the Big Eyed Fish location on Well's street. They have an express shop located on Huegenard Road and another dine in location at Leo Crossing. This location has been in service since 2003. It has a nice diner feel with super friendly service. You can find parking on the street or in the lot behind the store. The inside is rather large and works well for parties up to about 8 diners. There is a small bar and TV's if that is your thing. They also have a big and varied menu including breakfast items. Here is a run down of the food items: -Fried Fish: the white fish fillet is thin and fried with a thin breading. The fish is moist and tender. It will flake apart with a fork or by hand. The breading has a slight amount of seasoning and isn't very oily to taste. It has a taste similar to the Fish & Stroh style if you are familiar with that. The fillets are not very filling. For an extra $3...I went with the all you can eat option. Delicious fish! -Tarter Sauce: I love tarter sauce. In fact I might order fish to go with my tarter sauce - lol. This mayo based sauce is reasonably thick, somewhat sweet and has a hint of pickle flavoring. It's creamy and makes a perfect complement to the fried fish flavor. -Baked Beans: this side really surprised me. The bean is small and contained hamburger pieces. The sauce had a slight BBQ flavor but not enough to classify it as a BBQ baked bean dish. The meat flavor was a nice add to the smooth tomato spiced sauce. Delicious!! -Cole Slaw: I kind of use KFC as the standard for Cole Slaw. This is very similar. The slaw pieces are cut very small with only one kind of slaw. Seemingly no additives - just slaw. The sauce is mayo based, a bit more sweet along with a hint of vinegar. I loved this side too! -Hush Puppies: these balls are pretty small in diameter. The inside is very modista and sweet with that southern style corn bread taste. The outside is thicker, a bit oily to taste and has a mild corn bread taste/texture. These are probably some of the best hush puppies I've had in my southern raised life.

Rack & Hellen's double fried crispy wings - delicious! I went with the naked version since I've…read morenever had their wings or sauces before. I was confused that the sauce options were not on the menu. However the kind bartender gave me an 8 pack of sauces to try. I found that the Carolina mustard sauce was my favorite. Very mild in spice. The consistency was also thin so it had trouble sticking to the wing. A slight mustard taste that accented the crispy fried skins nicely. This order had 10 nicely sized wings. The wing was was cooked perfectly - no pink on the inside. The skin was nicely crisp without being crunchy. Extra crispy wings have never been my favorite. However, Rack & Hellen's did an incredible job with these wings! I loved the onions rings. A large-thick piece of onion with a thick batter. The batter was moderately crispy but a bit oily to taste. Definitely recommend! The mac salad was very good. They use a larger shell along with egg and possibly onion. The mayo is pretty heavy. However the dish was pretty tasty! On this occasion I sat at the bar. The place was busy. There were plenty of servers hustling and helping each other. The bartenders were very kind and friendly. I was pleased that the food came out rather quickly!

To cut costs, they are now purchasing cheaper, lower-quality ingredients. Their onion rings are overly greasy, soggy, and unpleasantly greasy. The French fries are often burnt to a dark, crispy state, making them too hard and unappetizing to eat. The orange juice served is bitter and lacks the natural sweetness, indicating poor quality or improper preparation. The French salad dressing has a strange, sour taste that is unappealing. If this decline continues, I strongly believe Joanna's will close down permanently within the next year.
