I truly enjoy going to Doke to see Meghan and Jimmi. They make the experience the best experience I've ever had. They are both the nicest, sweetest, caring people I have ever met. Food is excellent and the staff are very friendly and hard-working. Yes they are new, and you can tell, but they're off to a great start! It is a small place so you definitely need a reservation. One reviewer gave one star just because of this, as if it's their fault that their place is small for how many people want to eat there! After all, I was able to make reservations that very afternoon, and they fit us in at 7:30. They were very nice on the phone, and even called us back to give us the best time they could. My husband and I eat sushi a lot, so at first we were a little put off by the limited menu and the non-traditional rolls, but we and our two sons (age 10 and 12) all found things we wanted, and once we started eating we didn't care about the small menu anymore because we all LOVED our food. The boys had the bbq chicken skewers and an udon bowl, hubby had seafood udon bowl and I had two rolls. All excellent. We have been wanting to come here since hearing of the opening about a month ago. Sushi was one of the things missing up here. We LOVE it. Fresh, clean food, we had the ebi, unagi, Big Trees roll and Dragon roll. The only down part is the smallness, only room for about 20 people. Ok, normaly not a Yelper but decided after much sadness to post. Friday night, my family and I were craving Doke and decided to go for dinner. We walked in thinking something was different, boy were we right! There was a huge change ( not for the better) in staff! Where we are use to being greeted like family by Serene and Sr, we had Barbara ( older gal). She was unknowledgeable( as my husband had to answer my daughters friends questions), and after being served water in dirty lipstick smudged glasses she rolled her eyes and was very rude when we asked for new glasses. The owner is now there too as his other restaurants are shut down. We will NOT return. I miss the old staff Jr. Sr. Serene even megan. Our rolls tasted alright, they didnt look appealing, and the Doke sauce is off. Left there very sad locals. read more

If I could give another star, I would. Possibly the best sushi roll I have ever had, and I've been to over 15 countries and have had sushi is many places. The Calaveras rollI substituted the cream cheese for avocado. Outstanding! My wife had the California roll and got a veggie roll for my son. It was all so delicious. The sushi melted in your mouth. Extremely fresh. The server was polite and friendly and happy to help us with anything we needed. I already know this is a place my family and I will be frequenting often. Okay, listen. I worked at two sushi restaurants right out of college, both right near the harbor. When I moved to Arnold, I was completely prepared to have to drive to Sacramento or the Bay to get good sushi, but I was so wrong. I swear, and I don't know how they do it, but the fish at Doke is some of the freshest and best tasting fish I've ever had. The rolls are great, the service is SO GOOD -- seriously, the waitress remembered my girlfriend and I after one conversation and even remembered the weird things we ask for. I go as often as my paycheck lets me. This place always impresses me, and I am so glad I found a place to eat amazing sushi so close to home. read more

3.75 stars based on a single visit at dinner. We tried this place on a weeknight, so seating was not a problem. I was surprised by the quality of their fish - was it the best I've ever had? No, but given that we were in Gold Country, it was pretty darned good! This is a typical California sushi place that has to have sushi combination rolls to please the younger set (there was a lot of cream cheese on the menu), but they acquitted themselves well with their nigiri. (Was that snobby? I wasn't trying to be snobby, it's probably that I'm just OLD! =) We did try one of their noodle dishes, and it was OK - but I'd recommend sticking with their sushi. Friendly, attentive service with a Hawaiian-ish soundtrack, I would eat here again. read more

we just tried this place for the first time today. as soon as we entered we saw lila. right then i knew we were in for a surprise! as we remember her from the burger bar, ( back when it rocked that is). the personality is awesome, atmosphere too is awesome, the food is VERY GOOD! We went here for my birthday. I'm gluten free so I'm used to not being able to eat 80% of the specialty rolls on the menu at most restaurants. No big deal because I love sashimi....BUT I was soooo excited when I told the waitress I'm gluten free and she said ALL but the offerings with doke sauce on the menu can be made gluten free. I just am so happy. The quality and variety on the menu was excellent. Service was outstanding. I highly recommend this place!!! read more

Very disappointed in Doke tonight. Asked for a rainbow roll to go for my husband after having dinner with our son. Didn't look at it until I got home. It was the saddest looking roll I've ever seen. No tuna, no hamachi, no tobiko, just very thin slices of salmon on top. We were sitting at the counter and the sushi chef never said a word except, "Here's your rainbow roll". I'd just eaten one so I know exactly how it should have been prepared. Mine as it was had super thin sliced fish, but it ad least had all the different types of fish on it. Doke is our son's favorite restaurant, but we'll be going somewhere else for awhile. What awful service! Plus they raise their prices but the menu doesn't reflect the higher prices. read more

Such a great and quaint sushi spot!! The staff were all so kind, especially the younger gent that makes sushi behind the sushi bar. He really made the sushi experience even better by his humble and hospitable personality. We were visitors from out of the area and he offered different places around Murphys that we could stop in for drinks and such. The sushi was very good, fresh, as well as, attractive to the eye. If you enjoy California Rolls, you can get fresh crab meat instead of the imitation. What a difference-so delicious! We also ate another roll that had jalapeño and fresh sliced salmon with lemon. I have never been a big raw salmon eater, but he asked if we would like the salmon sliced even thinner since he knew I wasn't really into the salmon. All I can say, is this is the first roll with raw salmon that I couldn't get enough of! A must try, and not super spicy with the jalapeño, it's just there for some flavor. The Gyoza was delicious, pretty meaty and cooked perfectly. The tempera was crispy and the tempera sauce that comes with the dish has such great flavor. Better than the average tempera dipping sauce you would typically have anywhere else. If and when we are ever back in the area, we will definitely come back here!!! read more

I LOVE Doke! Visiting friends/seeing theatre last evening, we went to dinner. Strolling Main Street for an open restaurant - we happened upon Doke - Sushi in Murphys - finally! Yay! The waitress was great, and the moment I told her I am celiac, and asked of they have gluten-free soy sauce (Most Japanese restaurants do now, happily!), she excitedly told me that they make GLUTEN FREE TEMPURA! In all of Sacramento where I live, we have many good sushi places, but not one makes sushi with rice flour. Only one makes a tempura-like dish with cornstarch, and it's good, but it's not tempura. I ate tempura at Doke for the first time in 15 years - and it was so good! The Grashopper Roll I had was also just perfect. They also can substitute any sauces with gluten with gf alternates. the food is great, the service is delightful, the atmosphere is very nice, prices are very reasonable. I hope to be back again and again! read more

So happy to have a Sushi restaurant in the area. Heard about this place from a few locals and had to give it a try. We tried the california rolls, oishii rolls, spicy tuna rolls, big trees rolls, and the katsu chicken. We ordered to take home and received everything fresh and delicious. Great quality ingredients. Chef made sure the chicken was dropped right before we picked up our order. Love the oishii and big trees rolls. Unique combinations that were absolutely fantastic. We've been to this restaurant a number of times and always thought the food was very good. We think something has degraded over the past year. This time, we ordered similar dishes to what we've had before: udon soup and a couple of rolls. The udon broth was delicious, but the broccoli and snow peas in the broth were so overcooked that they tasted like they had been stewing for days. They were limp and partially disintegrated with an almost burnt flavor. Also, the portion size from the year before was significantly smaller and it was still $12. The shrimp in my soup was fresh and plentiful. The chicken in my mother's soup was so overcooked it was truly inedible. Hard, dry as a bone, and tasteless. The rolls - the Calaveras roll was tasted good enough but for $15 I expected more than 5 or 6 small pieces. The rainbow roll was not even a rainbow roll. It had only salmon on the top, and they were small slivers of the fish - not the fairly meaty slices that one would expect on a roll. The waitress was friendly and the service was good, but when I looked at her and exclaimed that this was not a "rainbow roll", she just shrugged and tried to avoid eye contact. Hmm. I might give Doke one more chance, but hate to blow $60 on another mediocre meal when there are so many other good choices nearby. Hope they read this and take note. read more

This review is sad to write. Doke use to be one of my favorite hangouts. When they first opened, I was so exicted since I am a Bay Area transplant and having sushi nearby was a dream come true. I have been frequenting Doke since the day they opened. I have watched Doke go through some changes with personnel and even a sushi chef. Of course the first sushi chef was awesome, he understood being a sushi chef is more than putting fish in rice, he is there to provide a show for their guests. Hence, the sushi bar. The new sushi chef is not only dull or non existent; he is also rude and terribly grumpy. Now, Doke has gone yet another change, they got rid of the last employees that started and knew Doke from the beginning and now have one waitress to assist all customer's needs and orders. This could possibly (not one I would suggest) work if the employee was experienced. I made reservations and asked for a specific table prior to our arrival. When she took the reservation she took our phone number, when we arrived, she told us simpy to go to the end of the restarant and sit. I never got the chance to tell her we had reservations, but we could not sit where we asked anyway, because if a party comes in larger than yours, they bump you and DO NOT CALL YOU to tell you. Which is what happened to us. It took her half an hour to get to our table and she called from across the restaurant to ask us what we wanted. I didn't even know she was speaking to us until my husband realized it, since no one else was respnding. The Chai Tea she made for my husband was not mixed right and he said it was bloody awful. We had no chopsticks or napkins when our food arrived, all we had on the table was a bottle of soy sauce, had to wait another ten minutes to get her attention. The sushi is small and not to the presentation or caliber as it once was. The waitress staff, they need more help and someone with experience. It looks like a place I frequented 2 to 3 times a week will cease for now. We left hungry and went across the street to truly have a real dinner. I hope Doke sees their way through the fog they have caused and just maybe correct some mistakes within their business so that it is the Doke that once was. read more
