The owners were born and raised in the Sonora area, and their undeniable passion for serving fantastic food to the local community - is evident. Both the owners and the staff genuinely care about cultivating a warm and accessible vibe at Kobe Japanese Steakhouse. Kobe Japanese Steakhouse has an extensive menu - serving everything from quality steaks, to hibachi, to specialty sushi rolls, to fried rice, to noodle dishes and more. For their hibachi options you can choose from steak, to salmon, to chicken, to shrimp, to lobster, and more. All look (and I'm sure taste - as well) delicious. One particularly photogenic standout from their specialty sushi menu - was their Lobster King Roll, which is comprised of lobster tempura inside lobster salad and tobiko on top. Swoon. When we were here, we sampled an array of sushi rolls and hibachi options and all were exceptionally flavorful. If you have dietary issues or concerns - be sure to let the staff know. The staff are attentive and they seem eager to assist customers navigate the menu accordingly. Kobe Japanese Steakhouse isn't cheap, but you can tell by the quality of their food - that you're paying for well crafted dishes that have been made with intention. If you're on a budget - be sure to look into their lunch specials and bento box dinners, which are more wallet friendly. And don't be afraid to ask the staff for recommendations. If you're looking to celebrate a special occasion at a restaurant - Kobe Japanese Steakhouse is a formidable option. Their ambiance/decor may be a little too casual if you're looking for a romantic date destination, but if you want menu items that will delight your tastebuds and eyes - they got you. Trust.

That might have signaled something as far as expectations. The decor was pretty basic and not really what you would expect for a Japanese steakhouse...the decor looks more like a breakfast diner. They serve only wine and beer, no cocktails. Service staff were friendly enough. Our meals came with miso soups and a salad, the latter of which had an orange dressing (maybe French), not the sesame ginger you might expect. Our entrees came fairly promptly, yet lacked the white rice and fried rice sides that were supposed to accompany the main dishes. I'd say the rice didn't come until a good 10 minutes after the main entrees arrived. People in our party were trying to eat slowly (to buy time for the rice to arrive), though that meant our food was getting colder. All the hibachi entrees came with a few bonus shrimp. The meat was tasty enough and came with an orange sauce and a brown (sesame ginger) sauce for dipping. Don't come here expecting a teppanyaki table or to see your meal cooked on hibachi at your actual table...all the items are cooked out of view, in the kitchen. The experience was sort of 'meh' for me, but my husband had a slightly more favorable opinion. I have other restaurants I'd prefer returning to, before this one.

Some things to note, highly encourage reservation ahead of time. We got there an hour before closing on a Sunday and even though there was a table open they almost didn't seat us. It is small on the inside with limited tables so I would not say it's great for groups. They stop serving about 30 minutes before the posted closing time and don't make exceptions. We ended up ordering a Jenni role which had tofu/cream cheese/cucumber inside and avocado/panko/doke sauce outside and it was seriously amazing. Although there were only two veggie roll options on the menu I could easily eat two of this roll alone. Things only got better with the curry. I assumed the curry was going to be Japanese style, but they are actually more thai style yellow and panang curry options. Unfortunately the Udon and Ramen dishes are not vegetarian as they are made with fish broth. But the yellow curry was perhaps the best yellow curry we've ever had (and we are a bit of curry snobs). The sauce was lighter than a traditional thai yellow curry and it had a delicious sweet finish. The veggies were tasty and fresh. When we come back to Murphys I will certainly be going for this curry again. I do wish they had a few more vegetarian options, but very glad the ones they do are outstanding.

Great assortment of fish and the sauce splatter is gorgeous. Poseidon roll: our favorite! This roll was really tasty and all the elements worked well together. Negihama - generous cuts but maybe it's out of season as it was a little lacking. Service was attentive and prompt and the food came out quickly. The food was surprisingly good for being the only sushi place in town so overall I'm happy it exists. I'll definitely try to stop by again!!

Average food and poor service…read more My friends and I decided to try Okinawa Sushi on a Saturday evening, around 6pm. Despite the restaurant being relatively empty, it took quite a long time for us to be sat. When we got to our table, the first thing I noticed was how large the booths were. If you are coming with a large party, you will likely be able to fit at one booth - this definitely makes this place feel more intimate. Despite the menu being very large, I must say, I appreciate that the there are photos of all the sushi rolls. The photos are definitely not the clearest but they help visualize what you are ordering. The menu definitely has a lot going on. There is sushi, hibachi, and all the side orders and bowls that you can imagine. Our table ordered the Crab Rangoons, Fantastic, Alaska, and Lion King Rolls. The rangoons were unfortunately deceiving. They are large, but have hardly any filling. They were almost entirely fried wrapper with quite literally a drop of filling. As for the rolls, they were alright. The texture of rolls was almost mushy. On some of rolls, there was so sauce that it was all you could taste and made the rolls soggy. The flavors were pretty good, but the portions were tiny. I felt the rolls were comparable to glorified grocery store sushi. When the rolls were brought to our table, my friends and I had to hold back our laughs when we saw the tray. There was a little whale figurine that spewed out steam. This novelty was cute but felt a little tacky. The service was somehow worse than the food. Our table ordered three waters for our party of three yet only two came. Our server said she would bring it to us later. Little did we know, this "later" would be at the conclusion of our meal. The one time she came by our table, she asked us if everything was okay. Before we were even able to provide an answer, she just assumed we would say 'yes' and walked away, making no eye contact with us. She literally walked away so quickly we couldn't tell her we were still missing a water. It felt like she was just avoiding any interaction with us. At the end of our meal, it took a long time for the bill to be brought to us. I don't see myself coming back in the future.

I had scoured the reviews of this place and it *seemed* like the reviews had gone up. I am generally distrusting of Japanese restaurants in small towns, but I figured Oko Sushi would be worth a try. Our first visit unfortunately looks like it will be our last. We were pretty hungry and both ordered the dinner bento boxes. I got the salmon teriyaki with veggie tempura, while my husband got the chicken katsu with gyoza. The first red flag was seeing the extremely limited selections of the bento boxes. At other (better) Japanese restaurants, there are far more options to choose your sides from, such as shrimp tempura or even sashimi. Oko only had a California roll, gyoza, and veggie tempura to choose from. Fine, just small-town things I guess, but not really an excuse when you're the only Japanese restaurant in a pretty wide radius. However, what honestly annoyed us both was that neither the lunch nor the dinner bentos boxes came with miso soup, which is a standard appetizer, and our meals were still $19 each. I have never been to a Japanese restaurant that doesn't provide miso soup with their bento boxes (or any set menu items, for that matter). Anyway, on to the next part of my review. Now it pains me to write this section as the entree portions of our bento boxes were actually pretty well-executed. My husband enjoyed the breading and flavor of his katsu, and I enjoyed the tenderness and the crispy skin of my salmon teriyaki. The gyoza were pretty good as well, and I had plenty of tempura, which were nicely breaded. The California roll was fine. Nothing to write home about. The ginger was fine as well. Now the rice that came with our entree on the other hand was absolutely not it. I'm not sure how an Asian restaurant can mess up rice, but Oko did. The juxtaposition of mushy yet undercooked rice was so unappealing. We finished our rice as we hate wasting food, but it's been a long time (I'm talking years) since I've had rice this bad. Tell me how the sushi rice was perfectly fine while the rice for the entree was undercooked?? This goes to show that the restaurant doesn't use the same kind of rice for their entrees as their sushi, which if you go to a good Japanese restaurant, it should be Japanese rice for both sushi and regular rice bowls. The salad was also mid, and seemed to cater to the country folk who frequent this establishment. Upon finishing our meal, we were also asked if we wanted dessert right away. Not a thing with other authentic Japanese restaurants we've been to. Service was fine, but nothing to write home about again. The presentation overall was also not exactly refined. Everything was packed into the bento boxes, and we actually had to take our rice bowls off the bento boxes themselves to have more space to eat. The best part of our meal was enjoying the beautiful fish in the multiple salt-water tanks they had. At other Japanese restaurants, the staff usually have beautiful cuts of their sashimi being shown off through glass counters. Here, the view was blocked by yet another fish tank. I do not see myself returning to Oko Sushi. Unfortunate, but I do not wish to spend my money on subpar food. Do yourself a favor and drive to Sacramento (or even north Stockton) for far better Japanese food.

We don't have sushi often, but I had a hankering and everything was delicious. Our waitress was so personable and suggested substitutions since my husband is not crazy about a particular type of fish. It seems subtle, but I so appreciated the choice of music - background not blaring, and relaxing instead of the heavy rock/rap that you usually hear in restaurants. In all, a delightful dining experience.
