Very casual place along the main road in Orange Beach. From outside it gives slightly upscale but inside it's totally casual. Since it had rained off and on all day, we opted to eat inside. Service was a 6 on a scale of 10. Our server was "interesting". He didn't share the specials but luckily they were taped to the hostess stand. When we asked about things he would say glad you asked or you're so smart. I felt he was being sarcastic but other than that he was fine. All the staff we encountered were nice. Mom and I ordered the fried shrimp. I love shrimp so it was a no brainer for me. He sold my mom on it since they have the best fried shrimp in the gulf (that's actually on the wall too). My sister got the grouper special. Food came out quickly. We loved our food. Coleslaw was good and you got a good portion size. My sister said her grouper was seasoned well and fried perfectly. While I did enjoy my shrimp I would have devoured them if I had more cocktail sauce. You make your own at the table, which was fun but it just wasn't enough. Good: Steaks are pricey but great! Service is great. Waitress named Josey was very nice. Food came fast. Bad: They fried the stuffed crab shells, looked like toasted ravioli from St. Louis. Over cooked and dry. Chicken tender appetizer was a nice portion size but tasted awful. We think they needed to change their grease. The chicken was decent on inside but bad oil soaked breading and made it inedible. If you want your tea or soda to taste good you might want to order water. Our drinks were watery and had too much ice. Cola was see through, sweet tea very weak and watery. Ambiance: if it's cool enough to eat outdoors do so. Inside is a dreary grey with black tables and overall feeling of depression it's so dark. If you are getting a steak they seem to do that well. Otherwise would not recommend. read more

Being a recent relo to the Foley area from Daphne, we have been looking for new food spots and decided to try Doc's - BIG mistake. First let me say the help is welcoming and helpful, sadly that's where the good news stops. The menu is limited and WAY overpriced - big time ! The setting is definitely for the over 50 crowd (aka music, menu selections, salad bar, etc). Lots of "fried" food, little grilled or fresh options. For us when we see "warning signs" after sitting down, we always opt for the least likely stomach offender listed on the menu, in our case the grilled fish sandwich and standby burger both coming with fries. Here is a short list of our YIKES 1) both our sandwiches had previously cooked/prepared meat on them, is was clearly just warmed up for the delivery :( 2) fries were warm not hot and seasoned funny 3) when I asked for mustard they had only the takeaway dispensers no on table dispensing unit :( 4) sandwiches were really bad, the fish was swimming in grease, so much so the bun was not edible. The hamburger was so dry it made sawdust seem like an oasis. 5) coffee was cool on delivery and when we asked them to nuke it , the waitress informed us they did not have a microwave on site - really ? 6) both of us agreed that the best thing on our plate was the garnish of tomato and lettuce 7) a $40 tab plus tip was the icing on the cake This place is new .. the food however is some of the worst we have ever had - the only way we would return is if we were arrested and handcuffed, then blindfolded beforehand. read more

Doc's was our first stop after long travel day. They were not too busy when we arrived which was great for our burgeoning appetites. Service was great and quick with our food coming out fast. We sat almost outside on the porch. I had fried shrimp and oysters meal and my wife had the fried shrimp and fish. It's a lot of fried but great fare. The French fries were very good too! We passed by this place on our way to the hotel and noticed they claim on their menu "#1 steak in America." My husband said, "That's a bold statement. I may have to see if it's true or not." So we did! We arrived at lunch and there were several vehicles in the parking lot, but no wait to be seated. He ordered the 20 oz Ribeye with fries (noted as "premium fries" on the menu) & I ordered the Fish Fillet, blackened, with a loaded baked potato. Loaded = the usual butter, sour cream, along with shredded cheese, green onions, and bacon bits. His steak looked beautiful, but we laughed because the premium fries just looked like regular crinkle cut. He tasted one and then thoughtfully, with the air of a seasoned, Michelin star chef, said, "These are ... Oreida ... Extra Crispy ....Crinkle Cut. Exactly what we buy at home." I'm not arguing with that confidence. My plate also looked wonderful. The menu plainly says at the top that my order comes with fries or baked potato along with Cole slaw and hush puppies but I didn't see that until after I got my order and wondered "why do I have slaw?" Had I noticed this, I would've substituted broccoli or something else for the slaw. It was fine, completely my error not theirs. Verdict: he said the steak, while good, was NOT in fact, the #1 steak in America. Had it been a $28 steak at Long Horn, he said, he would've been very pleased. However, this was a $42 steak claiming to be the best along with what we suspect was Oreida crinkle cut fries. My fish was very good though, good enough to take the leftovers with me so I can enjoy them later. The service was excellent and overall, food was good. Solid 4 stars. read more

After going to the original Doc's for years and being huge fans of the fried shrimp and Spider Burger we decided today to see what the new store is all about. In part because it has four times as many beers on tap and more wine offerings as well. I also noted that they do a Marg with Hornitos, Cointreau, Agave, fresh lime juice, lemon and orange. If this is truly done with freshly squeezed lime juice then I'm def interested. But get this... $19! Nowhere in all of Texas; even in big city, top tier restaurants have I ever encountered a $19 Margarita. I'd have to watch this poured to buy in to this cocktail. LOL. These days we always order a dozen fries shrimp each, a la carte. No sides to interfere with the main business. We opened the store today at lunch and these came out perfectly cooked, super hot and as crispy as crisp can be. As we were still hungry we ordered six more to share and these had obviously been cooked earlier and then plated for us from a pan under a warmer. Still tasty but soggy and just warm. This store is humongous and while pleasant enough a dining venue it just does not hold the appeal for us of the old seafood dive ambiance of the original store. So we'll stick with the original store for the Best Fried Shrimp in the Entire Civilized World! read more

We are locals and have frequented Docs maybe half a dozen times. Their fare is pretty much centered on fried seafood and we know that going in. Last trip which was recent I ordered the soft shell crabs and although I knew they weren't fresh, they were really just pretty much fried batter. And I'm a soft shell aficionado if I do say so myself. Maybe they should only serve these in season. The oysters on the po-boy were not freshly shucked as well. The shrimp on the loaf was the best item of the night. I got a draft beer for $6 which wasn't very cold. With my dinner I got two new potatoes and two bites of a pretty good coleslaw. Service was fine and friendly but cannot go over a 3 star ok rating for now. Might stick to lunch for our next meal here and enjoy some fried chicken. read more

The restaurant was busy and we were a party of 2 so we took the first available table, which was in the bar area. Our waitress was also the bartender, she took our order and was delivered fast. My wife had the boiled shrimp was very good and cooked well. I had the Best Fried shrimp, as advertised in the civilized world, it was good but the "make your own tartar sauce" was what sold me on the shrimp. This restaurant is wonderful! I had the Island chicken which was delicious with cheese and grilled pineapple. My husband had deep fried oysters and they were good too. We got there late -- after 8pm -- when we knew they closed at 9pm. No problem! We were seated promptly and our orders placed. Food arrives quickly, hot and fresh. The shrimp, both fried and grilled, were tasty with very large portions. The new potatoes were perfectly cooked red potatoes, served with butter. Nothing else needed. Even though we were there near closing, refills were done quickly and service did not suffer. The ambience is casual with plenty of seating. Wait wasn't bad at all for Spring Break. Now I know why. We had the Seafood Platter with grilled and fried shrimp since the sign says "Best Fried Shrimp in the Civilized World." Shrimp was super gummy like a frozen shrimp would be. No seasonings at all on the fried shrimp or the batter on the fried crab claws we got as an appetizer. No one in our group was just thrilled with their meal except the one who ordered hamburger steak. Won't be back unfortunately since there are much better places with great, fresh seafood. read more

Honestly, we were surprised about that since we hit this place back in Feb and it was quite good then. A young couple came with their dog that was (very) obviously not a service animal. They were seated at a table outside near us to eat. It wasn't crowded at all when we arrived. Very cool location. It kind of had a warehouse-style vibe. We were seated quickly and well taken care of. They had a way you could make your own cocktail sauce at the table with all the fixings and recipe. Very unique! I got the fried shrimp, as it is their claim to fame. It didn't disappoint at all! We went to this establishment today to eat with my family. We with high expectations because of their reputation. We sat down and I have not been treated so rudely in my life. As we were ordering drinks the waiter said to us, "Do you not hear me, do you not understand English?" We did not say anything, but decided to pay for our drinks and leave. While paying for our drinks, the cashier asked me, "What happened?" I explained what happened and she called the manager. He was apologetic and asked me was there anything he could do? Doc's is one of our favorite locations to eat when we visit the Gulf Coast. We love their gumbo so much that I have the recipe and make batches at home each year. The night we visited there was live music. It was a bit loud but the artist sang well. The food was great and portions were larger than at other spots. Of course, pricing at the beach is always a bit higher so getting good sized portions helps when paying the bill. Definitely recommend! read more
