Doan Restaurant is one of my top Vietnamese restaurants in the Garland area. Not only is the food good, but it's clean as well. Prices also range from fair to cheap. Can't say much for the service because it's a Vietnamese restaurant and if you come to an Asian restaurant expecting stellar service you're a fool. There's also an area to the left with their famous tofus and refrigerator full of foods, drinks and desserts. There's always a big pile of banh bao (pork buns) in the fridge. Doan Restaurant is known for their tofu dessert in ginger syrup, bun mam, and their tofus (fried and unfried). Their pho is actually not bad. The flavor of the broth is decent and the ratio of noodles to meat is good. Their rice plates are solid. The meats are marinated well and grilled to perfection. It's served with fresh vegetables, fish sauce and a side of soup. Their drinks are pretty cheap (coffee, smoothies, etc.) They also serve cha oc (Vietnamese ham with periwinkle) here! We drove from McKinney for soup but found out they no longer serve food in house or soup. We got tofu, banh tet and banh gio to go. Tofu- silky but ginger sauce wasn't good Banh gio- the filling was excellent! The rice portion was too mushy. Banh tet- not good. The mung bean inside was dry. Pho is decent here. I always get the pho tai bo vien but the beef is not rare when they bring it out. I loveeeeee their hot tofu that they have. Sometimes they give it to you for free when you dine in during weekends. I just get it to go and eat it later. It's only a buck and it has the ginger sugar syrup that goes on top. I was craving some dau hu nuoc duong or tofu pudding with ginger syrup because it's one of my favorite childhood food to eat. The ginger syrup was lacking flavor, which I'm not sure how that's possible because ginger is a potent herb. Maybe I got a bad batch but it definitely tasted really watered down. read more

The staff were very friendly and very helpful the food was great. I've been looking for my go to Pho place to go to and I found it. My roommate really enjoyed his bo luc lac and the egg rolls. We also tried the bun mam it's not like moms but it does helps the cravings when you don't want to stink up your house to make it. The pho really hit the spot for me. Went here a lot during the campaign since it was next door to my office. Bun is the vermicelli noodles..I like to get it with egg rolls (cha gio) on top and pour lots of fish sauce. Bun is nice to eat when it's hot outside cuz the mint leaves and cold veggie make it refreshing. Mi is the thin egg noodle, you can get it with shrimp and pork or wonton, good for a cold day. Chao is rice porridge, most of the toppings would be scary to newcomers except for chicken. I went all out with the "special pork" aka pig innards and congealed blood. Also good for a cold day. Make sure you get the sweet tofu afterward or grab some sesame balls to-go when you get to the register. So, my last review was a bit dismissive and rightfully so. It was written more than a year ago, and things have changed. New owners have come in, redone some of the cooking and the decor. More importantly, the food is significantly better. I'll just outright say it. Their pho easily rivals if not beats Pho Bang now. I know that's a lofty statement, but trust me. It's that good. Their rice dishes and vermicelli dishes have also improved, due to better marinades and cooking for their pork and beef and chicken. Ambiance is bright and comfortable, and significantly cleaner than rival pho places (if that matters to you). All of the waiters speak English and apparently take your order on smartphones, lol. Came here for the pho and it didn't disappoint. It was fresh, hot, and not as oily as some pho restaurants. It tasted very homemade. There was plenty of meat and the portions were a good size. A ton of people dropped in just to buy their fresh fried tofu pieces by the box. Whenever they brought out a fresh batch, it was gone within minutes. We have been ordered pretty much everything on the menu, The Pho seemed very watered down and lacked flavor. On the other hand, their bo nuong sa oi, whose lemongrass beef is really nicely marinated, is very good. Bun rieu (crab noodle soup) and Bun Mam are particularly good here, with a stunningly clear broth and the distinct salty and briny flavor of the ocean. Probably one of the cleanest and nicest Pho restaurants I have been to in the Garland area. I've talked to one of the owners and apparently they have another one in Carrollton. I normally don't finish the broth when eating Pho but I finished every last bit in my bowl. I haven't tried their congee yet but that's on my next taste test when I come here. One of the coolest things they have at the restaurant is a whole selection of Vietnamese desserts on the left side of the restaurant. It reminds me of the good old days when I was in Colorado. Yesterday night, I bought 12 cups hot Tofu then put those are in freezer. I just surprised when I open my cups with smell so disgusting, and sour tofu. I always buy a lot hot Tofu to eat put it in fridge like 2,3 days. I always recommend my friends, my family, my customers to come by eat here cuz I love the food here. Unfortunately, I called them in this morning, like how it happened, they say they don't know why. They don't even care, and responsible like it's not my fault to their customers. I decided to go in and get some to go food, I was charged $16. A couple days later my credit card charge comes back with a charge of over $24. I never tipped them on the card, so why would they charge me over $8 without my knowledge. Beware with business who do this under the table. Quiet atmosphere, clean, and relaxing with booth seating (kind of rare at Vietnamese restaurants) and tables suitable for large parties too. Their soups have a memorable taste. It didn't taste watered down or made from chicken broth/bouillon. Waiters/waitresses might have a hard time understanding English, so just be patient. There shouldn't be any problems at all. They have a deli/refrigerated section to the left where you can buy Vietnamese desserts, cakes, or already made dishes to eat with rice. (Tofu, pork, pickled radishes, etc.) If you're clueless on what to try, just find a soup or rice vermicelli with pork (bun thit nuong) and try maybe some traditional Vietnamese coffee or dessert afterwards. read more

We usually go to another Vietnamese place for pho across the street, but this time stopped by Doan. I am glad we did. Service was a bit off. We walked in the front door, but there was no hostess/host booth or anyone to seat you. I wasn't sure if we came through the right entrance, since the front door leads right up to diners eating at their table. Odd. So, we sat ourselves and our server immediately came to our table with menus. I ordered the seafood pho and my bf got the filet mignon pho. When our orders arrived we received two of the beef pho. I thought maybe we had someone else's order and the server seemed confused. He wasn't the one who originally wrote our orders. Anyway, he kind of stood there and sheepishly said "can you just eat it?" Huh? That would normally not sit well with me, but this being my bf's b-day and the server's English being limited I let it go. After I had already added all the condiments to the soup, he returned to ask nicely if I wanted redo my order. I think he went to double check the order ticket. I said no, but we were still waiting for the spring rolls. The filet mignon pho turned out to have the most tender beef I have ever tasted in pho. I wish they put more beef! Broth was rich and tasty. I enjoyed it. The portion was a bit on the smaller side for the "small" bowl. The fresh spring rolls were good, not the best ever but still good. The peanut sauce had a generous amount of roasted peanut chunks. Overall, it was clean, a/c was turned up and food was delivered fast. One of the cleanest Vietnamese pho places I've been to, and it's relatively big since they expanded their restaurant not too long ago. Before I talk about their food, I must say, pretty clean restrooms! I don't know, most Asian restaurants don't have clean restrooms..anywho. I think their pho is pretty good.
