Viet Tofu Ive been coming here for more then 5 years. Viet tofu serves fried tofu and other Vietnamese snake and food. The inside is dirty and old and it's a small place with no tables to eat. You know your at a legit authentic Asian spot if the restaurant is dirty and rough looking just like this place. The staff seems to be family owned an there is an elderly auntie at the register that doesn't speak English that well but you can still effectively communicate. My favorite thing they have is the viet fried tofu. I prefer the lemongrass flavor then the plain flavor. The lemongrass tofu taste not crispy but slightly firm with fried finely chopped lemongrass on top. I also recommend getting there meatballs on a stick. The pork stick rice is bigger then usual. The rice is soft and sticky but the pork filling is mostly fat then meat but it still taste good. read more

Like many places in a Chinatown, you'll find these special hole-in-the-wall shops specializing in native goods. Viet Tofu is something I miss visiting when I'm in Houston or Austin. Although I get my fried tofu elsewhere, I absolutely must come here to get their hot dessert tofu (other names include: hot tofu, soft tofu, tofu dessert). The ginger syrup hits just right and they are very generous when filling the container with tofu. I've made multiple trips purchasing their soft tofu to gift to family and friends out of the city. My family likes to make their own bread at home and thought that their bread was just as good. This is the only location in Dallas that I am aware of that offers flavored tofu like vegetarian (has greens and noodles in it) and lemongrass (chilli and lemongrass). I've had better from the tofu restaurants in Houston, but the lemongrass tofu is similar to the best I've had. They pretty much have everything I may be craving of or miss, except for sugar cane juice! I would definitely come more often if they got a machine. Otherwise, come if you are looking for ripe mini bananas, cooked meats, sweet rice, baked goods, traditional desserts, and of course tofu. The pricing on their goods is very cheap! I've been coming here for their dou hua and fried tofu cubes for a while. The interior isn't glamorous by any means but their delicious dou hua -- a very soft, tofu esque, flan textured dessert -- served in giant styrofoam cups with two small containers of ginger-infused simple syrup (always to-go) always hits the spot. The tofu cubes I always take home and add to soups and stews and the like. There are a plethora of other things the shop sells but I haven't tried them yet. The shop owner can speak Vietnamese, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, and Taiwanese. He's a boss man through and through. The dessert can be eaten cold or hot, and keeps in the fridge for a week. My mom used to take me here every Sunday to get our favorite tofu order. For $1, you can get a large tofu dessert in a to-go cup. It comes with a side of sweet honey and ginger dressing which should be added to the tofu when ready to eat or else it's bland. Eat while it's hot. This tofu dessert is actually good for you and so I was told by mi madre. Aside from that, I actually like their steamed buns called Banh Bao. I usually grab a jug of sweet soy bean drink as well. They offer so many vietnamese snacks to-go one visit just isn't enough. However, I do wish they make fresh Che dessert like they used to. I came in to purchase silken tofu in ginger syrup (Tau Hu Nuoc Duong). I couldn't help but notice something so nasty. The ladle that was used to scoop the tofu out was sitting in the sink. I proceeded to watch the young man grab the dirty ladle from the sink and scoop the tofu from another pot. After he scooped it out, he placed it back into the sink. I would assume that this is a practice that occurs every time a customer purchases some silken tofu. You should use a bowl or container to keep the ladle in when you're not using it. The sink is used to wash dirty dishes and dirty hands. Their sink already looked dirty from the eye. No matter how much you clean the sink, it is always going to accumulate bacteria and dirt. Not to mention, sinks often release a pungent and unpleasant smell from the pipes. Please use a separate container to put the ladle in. This is absolutely disgusting. read more

Growing up in dallas, this was my go-to Tofu place. They have all sort of delicious tofu that my parents and I would buy and take home to eat. I still drool thinking about it. Recently, when I was in town, we dropped by and got the pudding-like tofu and some banh mi. I love their sandwiches! I grew up eating them and I can easily devour two. Nothing here is overly pricey -- which is GREAT. I think it's cash only, not really sure, but that's OK because we usually don't spend more than 20 here. How things have changed through the years. I can remember when it was buzzing with customers coming in for fresh fried tofu. Now, it's a barren place with limited selections of questionable freshness and definite possibility of spoilage. The place does leave you with a sense of dirtiness. Before I went to work this morning, I came by Viet Tofu to buy bánh giò and steamed buns to bring in for everyone. It was the most embarrassing moment for me. The banh gio was rotten and the pungent smell made my coworker ran out the kitchen. When my manager cut opened the steamed bun, it was rotten too. Seriously! WTF!?! It was 9am and everything was hot, I thought they made them fresh. I didn't eat the rest of the 4 banh gio and steamed buns. I wrapped the bad ones in a bag to bring back as evident. They have the best soft tofu in the area. We really like how they add ginger to the syrup making it even tastier. The more you buy the cheaper the containers, but only buy what you can eat. We got 3 large ones for so cheap, but by the time we got to the 3rd one, it had gone bad after a few days. We have tried a few of their pastries and thought they were only so so. However their soft tofu keeps us coming back as regulars. Definitely stop by for a container and to browse all their other offerings of pastries, buns, and soy products. read more

We tried the fried tofu once we got back from Dallas. I have to say that these were pretty good tofu. It went from 10 tofu for $1 to 6 tofu for $1 which isn't a huge deal. I guess less to share around if you have a large family. We tried the wood ear mushroom and lemon grass tofu but agreed that the wood ear mushroom was better. There was also a bean curd wrapped tofu which was really good but $1.50 each I think but worth it. Unfortunately, they only have a microwave to heat up and plastic bags to carry out. I was told by my in-laws and my wife that there used to be packaged in Styrofoam take-out. Plus, the fried tofu was kept hot as well so you could enjoy right out of the store. Anyways, I guess times have changed but I didn't have baseline. Her mom just heated in microwave at home and it was still fine with me. I basicaly grew up at the Arlington Viet Tofu, but hit the Walnut version yesterday. Family store, and they both are pretty identical. Except for no matter how long I have been going to the arlington store, the guy at the register never says hi, whereas the Garland store they at least smile at me. Their claim to fame- yep, you guessed it - TOFU, and more Tofu. I'll try not to go on like Bubba from Forrest Gump, but Tofu does figure prominently. Fresh tofu, fried tofu, tofu cakes, etc. It is a small store, with stuff displayed against the walls ( usually the bakery items) and stuff in the middle, usually to-go paks of bun or com with pork chop, or chicken. They have a small section of pre-made banh mi. They also have a hot island, with pork and fish cakes, veg and nonveg spring rolls, etc. They also have a fridge section, for more tofu, a few desserts. This was the to-go place to buy fried tofu... Key word, was.. I've been going to this place since I was a little kid. There were different flavors and types of tofu to choose from. My favorite was the pork tofu where pieces of pork, green onions and black chewy slices (probably some kind of fungi) were found in the tofu rather than being stuffed with pork. The fried tofu pieces back then were decent sizes, plumped and fresh. However over time, I believe it started a few years ago, the place began to go down hill. The pieces were getting smaller and sad looking. I've been trying to check the place whenever I'm in the area to see if the people realized that their tofu game is doing poorly and went back to how they were.. but I believe that they're not selling fried tofu now. I think I heard that they're putting it in the fridge now, but that's totally not worth it. They do sell other food, but they were known for fried tofu. I hope that they'll go back to normal. So far, I haven't found a good fried tofu place to go to. read more

This can be pretty intimidating place for those not familiar with area and/or Vietnamese people. The shopping center is run down and old, and as far as I remember (been coming here since I could walk), it's always been a mess. Viet Tofu isn't a restaurant but more like an EatZi's where you can buy pre-made food items and dishes to take home and eat. Upon entering, you'll smell the aroma of tofu and other Vietnamese food in the air. It's crampy, doesn't look sanitary, but it has some good Vietnamese food. And yes, they have good tofu - fresh or fried - made in a variety of ways. Other items include banh mi selections, eggrolls, Asian canned drinks, and pre-made rice or noodle dishes. Bring cash only (not sure if they accept CC but I wouldn't let them run mine anyways).
