Hands down - one of the best burgers in Gainesville. I decided to stop by their pop up location at Cymplify Coffee on Thursday afternoon. The service was super welcoming and I love how they educated you on the fact their burgers are smashed and how you should order based on your hunger level. Last time I had the Oklahoma burger, so this time I decided to go with a classic burger with white cheddar cheese and an order of small fries. Since I wasn't starving I went with a single. Once my food was ready they brought it to my car. I rushed home so I could indulge in the goodness of DJ's. I was so excited as my first experience was pretty good. Again, the first bite was amazing. The burger is perfectly seasoned and smashed where there's a nice crust on the outer edges. Also the freshness of the toppings also make a huge difference. I'm a lover of pickles, I really like their bread and butter pickles because it gives the burger a good tangy bite where I feel like a dill pickle would give the burger too much of a bite. I think in addition to their sauce, everything just compliments each other very well. The fries were perfectly crispy and fresh also. I have been on a bit of a crusade when it comes to burgers in the area, so trying out DJ's Cast Iron Burgers was definitely on the list. I had heard some very good things about this food truck, so of course my expectations were also quite high. I pulled up on what was, to date, the hottest day of the year. Fortunately they have some tables with umbrellas set up outside the truck for people to eat there in some shade instead of frying to death in the Florida sun! Looking over the menu, I saw they had the typical lineup of burgers available, but they also had an Oklahoma Onion burger available, which I have been meaning to try for quite some time now. Sure, it is a bit more expensive than the regular burgers, but it was within cost tolerance for me so I gave it a shot. I also ordered up some fries because you have to have some fries with a burger, right? Once my order was in, I was informed I would be texted when it was ready... not a problem. I sat at one of the tables in the shade while I waited for my order to be cooked up. It took about ten minutes, which is what I would expect if you were to cook up something like this from scratch. Walking up to get my order, they loaded up the order in a small food tray, then slid the food into a paper bag sideways before stapling it shut. This means that if I were to hold the bag upright all of the food would be turned sideways. The burger was encased in a half wrapper, so it wouldn't necessarily have fallen apart, but receiving the food this way was kind of strange, particularly since the person handing me the food didn't bother to warn me that it was oriented this way. I took the food to go, as I was going to another location to eat. Once I got there and started on the food, I found the fries to be reasonable, and the dipping sauce (DJ's Sauce) that came with the burger worked really well together. The burger itself? Well, I was expecting something a bit larger than what I received for the price. The onions on it were great, but the size was just not there in my book. I probably won't be ordering another Oklahoma onion burger unless I am in Oklahoma, or I see a nice big one being served somewhere, despite my love of onions. Overall I was somewhat satisfied with what I got here. I will probably return at some point and try out their more regular burger just to see if they are more reasonable in my book. read more

Delicious! I went here on a Sunday afternoon after church and there were a few people already waiting. You can either wait under the shaded tables or in your car, I chose my car as it was about 15min bc a big party had just ordered. They get your number so they can text you when it's being bagged. I got the double combo with an apple juice, just a note the apple juice is $2 extra, and it was so good. The fries you already knew were homemade but also seasoned perfectly! Once a campus food truck on University, DJ's Cast Iron has now moved to a different spot by CYM. My first visit was a mix of highs and lows. I got a double patty burger with lettuce and tomato and it was very filling for lunch. The burger patties had a great crispiness, and the burger sauce was spot on. The fries were good, though the chili topping was very spice-forward--almost like taco meat--which made it a bit challenging to finish the chili fries. Like WOW! Like OMG! This place is LEGIT good! We would always see this place on the way home or passing by and always see a line and always said we would try it out! Well on our way home, we seen it and lo and behold no line (probably because it was uber HOT this day) and made our way over to try it! My friends and I visited DJ's Cast Iron Burgers on a Friday evening and really enjoyed it! We came here the Friday after Hurricane Helene hit, so most things in Midtown were closed due to loss of power. But, thankfully DJ's was open! Located in a little "food truck park" in midtown, it is in a great location. They are not too far from campus and the various bars in Midtown. Their hours are also ideal for late nights. There are some seating options available, but it is limited. Parking could be tricky. The menu is very simple, they serve smash burgers made on a cast iron skillet and fries. Ordering was effortless and the service was very nice. You will receive a text when your order is being wrapped up and one when it is ready. I will say, the wait could be long. I received my burger about 15 minutes after ordering. But my friends had to wait 30 plus minutes. It appears the orders come out in rounds. I received my order around the same time as several customers in front of me. While my friends ended up waiting longer and received their orders with other customers behind us. I ended up ordering the DJ's Oklahoma Onion Burger and the DJ's Dirty Fries. The Oklahoma Onion burger included two thin, crispy patties cooked on a cast iron, served with cheese, charred onions, DJ's pickles, and DJ's sauce. This was an exceptional burger! The patties were super thin and smashed to perfection. Paired with the sauce, onions, and pickles, chefs kiss! The sauce wasn't too overpowering, the the onions added a slight sweetness, and the pickles added a little tang. I also loved the buttery bun it was served on. This burger was a hit. I will note, the burgers are not huge. I got a double and it wasn't as filling compared to other double burgers I've eaten. It was good, but just something to consider. The Dirty Fries included DJ's fries covered in cheese, DJ's chili, DJ's sauce, bacon, and pickled red onions. These were also quite tasty. I love the fact that they use white cheddar on both their burgers and fries, definitely adds to the flavor. The chili was savory and went very well with the smokiness of the bacon. I appreciated the cut of the fries too. A little messy, but I would definitely recommend! Overall, DJ's is a great food truck serving up some really tasty smash burgers. Located in the heart of Midtown, it is an ideal spot to grab some grub. Service is friendly, but the wait could be long depending on how busy it is. I also note the prices are a little steep. I ended up paying $21 for a burger and fries, not including tip. The burgers are really good and made with quality ingredients, but as I noted before they are not the most filling. This was a really rough way to spend $20 on one person. I got a triple cheese burger, because despite these great reviews, many people in Gainesville make fun of this place for how small the burgers are. So I knew I had to get a "triple" to even have a shot at feeling full. Yet, of course, I still left hungry. The burger itself is not good. You can't taste any seasoning, any juices, there's just ...no appeal. You can't taste anything. Then there's the wait, combined with the price, combined with the fact that they leave you out to wait in the hot Florida sun, and ask for a tip on top of an already horrible price. The "triple" was $10.99, but that's with literally nothing on it, no cheese, no nothing. So of course it quickly became closer to $14. Pair that with remedial fries, and an inflated topo Chico water, I was left hungry and upset after spending $20. Also, they advertise that they serve angus beef, but so does relish at a fraction of the price per oz of food you get. Seriously just go to relish, this place is a terrible rip off. read more

This is DJ's Cast Iron Burgers (@djscastironburgers) located at 1542 W University Ave in Gainesville. These aren't your towering "FOMO Instagram burgers" that look good, but taste bland. These are delicious, wafer-thin, wonderfully crispy, beautifully seasoned smash burgers. You'll definitely want to get at least a double patty burger. I got the Oklahoma Onion burger. A double patty smash burger topped with chargrilled onions, cheese, bread and butter pickles, and DJ's sauce; a slightly spicy mayo. The chargrilled onions were just the right amount of sweet and bitter from the charring. The bread and butter pickles provided some supplemental crunch and brininess. The DJ sauce brought it all together with its creaminess and slight spiciness. And because it's in the middle of Gator country on campus, it's the perfect "walking-around-and-eating" size. Mah Wife got a classic double patty with lettuce, pickles, cheese, bacon, and DJ's sauce. Combine all that with some tasty, salty, shoestring style fries and it's a perfect lunch. There's a lot of great burgers in Gainesville, but few get the perfect combo of taste, texture, and ease-of-mobility quite like DJ's. This is seriously the best food truck I've ever tried in my life. DJs cast iron burgers brings an amazing combination of flavors in the typical Smashburger. The employees that work the food truck are so kind and always make my day. Their polite manners go above and beyond the typical interaction between customer and provider. Since I don't want to bury the lede, let me start off with the most important part: The Oklahoma onion burger is hands-down the best burger I've had in a LONG time. I consider myself reasonably well-qualified to judge burgers in general (I've been eating them for nearly 60 years and actively seeking out good ones for 40 years or so), and Oklahoma onion burgers in particular (I once worked as a fry cook at the Branson, Missouri are location of a family-owned Oklahoma burger joint and made a bunch of that BUNCH of burger). The meat was perfectly cooked, insanely tender, with that smash patty crunch around the edges. The onions were beautifully caramelized in and on the patty. The cheese and "DJ's sauce" complemented the whole thing perfectly, and the bun was nicely toasted (including the DJ's logo burned into it). I don't do pickles, so no comment on theirs. The service was also fantastic -- very friendly, very quick. I was eating my burger within a few minutes ordering. DJ's is located on a little "food truck lot" across the street from the University of Florida, and there are outdoor tables for eating if you don't want to take it home. Nice atmosphere! I went there specifically for this burger, and didn't try the fries, etc. for the same reason that this is a four-star rather than five-star review: There's not a LOT of food for the money. The burger, not really very large at all, and a can of soda came to $12 and change. If it was $10 or less for a burger, fries, and soda (or even a BIGGER burger by itself), I think I might be eating there three times a week until the inevitable heart attack. Instead, it's a "special treat splurge" price point for me. Ten bucks is my usual maximum lunch budget unless I'm somewhere that involves jackets and ties. And I avoid such places. But I do look forward to those occasional "special treat splurges." The quality is just off the charts, folks, and if you've never had an Oklahoma onion burger you're missing out big-time. read more
