My boyfriend and I were in the area running errands and decided on an early lunch at District. We shared the YUCCA FRIES which had a really nice cilantro dipping sauce. District is a great place to dine if you are at The Bloc in DTLA or seeing a film at Alamo Drafthouse. The restaurant is basically underground with a patio, lounge and HUGE dining room in the back. It is surprisingly large. It has a real speak easy feel - very dark finishes and lots of edison bulbs and similar decor. There is a huge parking garage, and the District validates (as does Alamo Drafthouse). We had made a reservation for Sunday evening after a movie, which was not necessary because there was plenty of space. We were seated immediately in a booth in the dining area. It was not long before we met our amazing server, Virginia. She made our ladies' night very special! We started with the Yucca Fries, which is the only thing that I would not order again. The eight yucca fries were super beautiful and had a nice herbal topping, but they were a bit tough compared to ones that I have had before. Even though they were not impressive, the accompanying cilantro dipping sauce was AMAZING! I saved the rest of it for the sweet potato fries. Then, we ordered a couple of entrees - we ordered the half rack of ribs and the salmon, each with coleslaw and sweet potato fries. Impressively, the salmon came rare as requested. It wasn't the best piece of fish ever, but it was very tasty and well prepared and a great value for $24. The half rack of ribs were AMAZING! They were super tender (and fatty and rich) with a sweet, smokey and tangy sauce. There were 6 bones in our half rack, and it was great for sharing. The sweet potato fries were crispy and salty - nice and thin. While I prefer my slaw tangy, this creamy slaw was nice and crisp and still had a nice tang. While the dinner was delicious, it was the cocktails that were OUT OF THIS WORLD! I started with a Vieux Carre, which was perfectly prepared and even had an emerald cut rock. DM had a penicillin, which was adorably served in a medicine bottle. We were so impressed that we shared the Last Word for dessert, and it was similarly impressive. Located in The Bloc, a small shopping center by Flower and 7th St just outside the Metro Red Line. The space is spacious with a lot of seating inside and some more at the outside patio. It's beautifully decorated and love everything including the restrooms. I had the slider through off the menu. The offer should have been two sliders but I was told they'll serve only one. I didn't argue and even went ahead to order deviled eggs because one slider won't fill me up. Nice food presentation. Slider was good but that was expected because I still have to find a place that'll mess up a slider. The deviled eggs were pretty and even came with bacon on top. However, the white part was a bit salty for me and I wasn't sure if they actually used century eggs to make this. I might be wrong bu that's how it tasted like. Even though my experience wasn't spectacular, I'm still willing to give this place another chance. I heard they have pretty good happy hour deals so I might need to do that on my next visit. Excellent spot to get drinks with your coworkers for happy hour. I came here on a Friday evening with my colleagues. Pro tip- ask the hostess if you can sit on the rooftop and they'll give you directions on how to get there. We sat on the couches, and ordered a couple of rounds of their Opium cocktail. Came here for lunch with a friend on a Friday afternoon. Place was pretty empty when we got there, which was good. They had the "Dine LA" special which is an appetizer and an entree for $25. This menu only has two options for each. I opted for the artichoke hummus and the fish and chips. Both were pretty tasty, especially the hummus. Definitely one of the best I've ever tried. Their cocktail selection lacks variety though. Mainly bourbon and tequila on the menu. I'm more of a vodka person so I would of liked more options. Regardless, I chose to order the drink of the day and it was ok. It's is a mixture of vodka (comes with gin originally) ginger and honey. Tasted a bit like cough syrup, lol! Service was AWFUL for breakfast on Sunday June 19 (father's day) around 9:40am. We have been waiting 20-25mins and started to notice guests who arrived later than we did get served their orders and nobody bothered to check on our table. Place isn't crowded or busy yet when we flagged down our server, her excuse was there was a "system glitch & due to technology issues, maybe the order didn't print out in the kitchen". They comped our breakfast and when we finally got our food, it wasn't nearly close to worth the wait. It was tasteless, lackluster and bland. We really regret booking here. We are not coming back. Pretty rooftop deck! We came here after catching a movie at the Alamo Draft house. We were just looking for a nightcap and decided to check this place out. We got the ugly ribs (1/2 rack espresso rubbed baby back ribs) which is supposedly a top item here, however our ribs were pretty much burnt to the point where it was ashy. Sadly, we did not really get to eat much of this. Got the coleslaw and kimchi fried rice, but really the sides cannot make up for the entree. Okay, but have you guys done the deck experience? We saw District through THE BLOCK next to Starbucks and we noticed they had a little sign saying "Ask about our deck experience" located on the 3rd floor. My girl and I went in circles around THE BLOC looking at how we could get to the District "Deck Experience" LOL. We finally gave up (which we should have done in the first place) and asked the host and she told us we would have to go through the restaurant, go towards the back which lead us to a hidden elevator and up to the "Deck Experience" we went. We went through the Sheraton Grand Hotel and ended up in a beautiful outside patio right in the middle of the hotel. The Patio is an extension of District. It is intimate and very aesthetic. It is decorated with long sofas, long tables, small stools, seating with huge curtains, and a long fire pit going through the whole patio. It does get chilly but they cute lamp looking heaters which just add to the ambiance. I really felt like I was in a huge elegant living room with fancy patio furniture. Also, you are right in the center of some serious DTLA views. The food was fantastic and the drinks were good. We only went for appetizers and drinks. Vegan pick: Yucca Fries! AMAZING! The preset dinners only allowed three options - salmon, turkey, and ribeye. We ordered the ribeyes and steaks. I figured it doesn't take that long to cook steak or salmon. But an hour is unacceptable to be quite frank. Was the cow still being raised or butchered? Our waitress came to us and offered to give us a discount for the huge delay - brought bread too. We appreciate her for that and for working on a Christmas Day. I really can't blame her for the delay since she isn't the cook. Management never really even came up to us explaining the situation. The food finally came and we were all beyond underwhelmed. The ribeye didn't resemble a ribeye and the flavors felt a bit bland. It was as if it was micro dosed with salt and one peppercorn. The potato was just a bland potato - it's supposed to be baked but tasted like boiled potato. It wasn't the best and I'd prefer going to a chain 2 for $20. The discounted price made it okay and that's how you earned the 2 stars, because the food definitely can't reach 4. I'm sure there's a lot of room for improvement here. It was a good experience until it wasn't? Very strange experience today at District. My husband and I have been to district a few times as we live downtown and I work nearby. All these times we've never had our card pre-authorized ($) prior to our food coming out. We came in last week, sat in the bar area, had a couple items and 2 drinks, and then headed up to Alamo drafthouse for a movie. No complaints...normal. Came back today and we ordered fries and a flatbread. No drinks as we knew funds were tight before our payday tomorrow. The restaurant ran a pre-authorization on my husband's card for $50+ (funds temporarily taken out of the account) and added a 20% service charge. Now look- we could transfer additional funds into the account or use a credit card that's not the issue. The issue is that they didn't run a pre-authorization on someone else/ an entire table behind us because apparently they had been sitting at our table before and so a few items were left on our table and therefore they tried to pre-authorize additional $ because that bill was higher. The server realized the mistake and took the items off our table, ran a smaller pre-authorization, and then our food came out. Our total was $37 (inclusive of the service charge). The receipt asked for 'gratuity' and so I looked closer and saw the pre-authorization of $50. I understand it's downtown but a couple things: - Do it for everyone or no one... (even the last time we came we didn't have a pre-authorization on our receipt). - Can you be upfront? Maybe I'd rather just pay for what I ordered versus having a preauthorization for additional $ hanging out there until (hopefully) your establishment does the right thing and authorizes the proper amount. How do we know you're not just going to add additional tip to even out to the preauthorization? - Pre-authorizing for the amount ordered but not over that amount! Additionally, IF YOU HAD TO to pre authorize over the amount-fine- but can you let me know before? The manager took care of our bill but I'd rather that we had just been charged for what we ordered and been able to pay. We're honest people that's why we didn't order more than what we budgeted for AND we left room for tip too. read more

The French Martini was on POINT! The flatbread was ok... the BBQ Quesadilla was fine as well. This is a restaurant/bar located in the Sheraton hotel but main public entrance is located off of the Bloc center court. Nice outside seating area too. We went in last Saturday the service was friendly and attentive the interiors are cool, trendy inviting. The tap water taste like butt! I gagged from the smell and immediately told the server as I wasn't sure if it was the ice or the water. I needed to stay hydrated, as the temperatures were over 100 that day, so I had no other choice but to get bottled water which was close to $6.00 for an Evian. I'm not cheap however if your tap water taste that incredibly bad you might want to offer it on the house since for the inconvenience. Here is my take when a guest ask for water mention their options with a slight disclaimer that the tap water is not filtered and many of your guests prefer the bottled water... then if they order the tap and they find it funky (as I did) they were fore-warned LOL IJS Plenty of TV's at this locale to watch the games should you wander in on a Saturday for the College games or Sunday for NFL. We were staying at the Sheraton and it was convenient taking an elevator level down from the hotel to the ground floor is District that is part of the open air plaza of the Bloc. As I was going through the cocktail menu and I saw "Nicotine" ($15). Since it was my birthday I was in for something new and out of the ordinary. Once the bartender prepared it, it was like cocktail chemistry. The drink is in a small bottle then you would pour it over a glass of ice infused with smoke that was created from a low key blaze from wood. The drink contains cacao nibs, rum, espresso, mezcal, slivovitz, black walnut, and curacao. It tasted like coffee with a charred bitter flavor, and it's a little sweet. The presentation on this drink is pretty cool but, it wouldn't be on my list of favorites. When I'm in the mood with something strong and smokey I'd go for it again. My brother ordered the "Opium" and his girlfriend got the "Lavender Blossom" and they enjoyed the experience here as well. The bartender that night was very knowledgeable and made lots of recommendations. The ambiance is really nice, its casual, modern, and a little upscale. My wife's family and I stayed at the hotel upstairs for a wedding and planned on meeting at The District for breakfast the next day. We all ordered various things, one of which had to be gluten free because of Celiac disease, not just a gluten free preference. When the toast was brought out, I immediately noticed and pointed out to our server that the gluten free toast was touching the regular toast, which contaminated the gluten free toast and would have caused pretty strong stomach issues later in the day for the person in our group that has Celiac's. We eventually discovered that, at least this morning, all of the gluten free items were being cooked in the same toaster and on the same grill as the regular items WITHOUT anything being wiped down or changed out in between. They finally brought out a bowl of fruit as a substitution for the gluten free toast and remade their omelette after ensuring us the grill has been wiped down. This is the kind of ignorance I would expect in the hick areas of Wisconsin where I'm from, not in Los Angeles where, stereotypically, so many people choose to or have to live a gluten free lifestyle. Completely uncalled for and potentially dangerous depending on the severity Celiac disease a person may have. While the food tasted good and I'd like to give it a slightly higher rating based on that, I unfortunately can't. read more

We got there on a holiday afternoon (Labor Day) for lunch and we had the whole place to ourselves. It's located on the bottom floor of the Macys plaza, we had a hard time finding it, but it's next to the Starbucks. We sat at one of the tables and our server was the bartender. He was very attentive even though the place started to fill up during our lunch. He still managed to check in on us to make sure we were doing well. We ordered the "hummus" and chicken wings for the 3 of us to share. The hummus was good, but it had the consistency more like a butternut squash purée and not your traditional hummus. It was still tasty. The wings were your traditional bar fair and they were ok. I ordered the ribs and they were very flavorful. A little too much BBQ sauce for my liking, but that's just my personal preference. My husband had the burger and said it was alright. Our friend had the steak and he said it was very tasty. All in all a good lunch with good company. But not somewhere I would honor of my way to visit again. Pro tip: don't forget to get validated! District is not an establishment you can just glance at while walking on 7th St. and say "Hey, maybe I'll stop by!" It's a place you actually have to intend on going to because it's down the escalators at Macy's plaza and hidden from street view. Honestly, I would've never known District existed had my work not set up a lunch for me here. But since I did end up here, I noticed they had a fairly limited lunch menu. Kinda hoped that it meant that they were actually good at the items they did have for lunch. Had the baby back ribs with fries and mac and cheese. I was actually pleasantly surprised. Ribs were actually decent, they fell off the bone fairly well and weren't too dry. Fries and mac and cheese were also on point. Definitely a lot better than I was expecting. Service was a bit slow relative to how many people were in the restaurant. Aside from that, no issues with service. DineLA lunch was $20 included a drink (soda or tea), starter and an entree. Starter: The kombucha squash soup was creamy and tasty (best I've ever had and trust me I order pumpkin soup a lot) and the salad was a delight!
