With a group of 8, we were seating in the middle of the main dining area - I would say this spot works super great for large groups being a smaller dining area. I started with a refreshing cocktail topped with rosemary topper. Priced around $18 which makes sense in the area and connected to a hotel. We of course did family style with a variety of mains and small plates. Salatim Platter - very shareable Grilled lamb ribs - a smidge dry Calamari fritti - nice and crispy Roasted Honeynut Squash - one of my favorite dishes Hanger Steak - pricey for the cut of meat at $44 and I would have preferred some more flavor from the zhong sauce Falafel Salad - was not my taste, I felt the price to ratio did not align and the falafel needed a dipping sauce. Dined here with friends on 4th of July. The place was pretty empty due to the holiday and we were seated right away. I loved all the plants surrounding the restaurant, the decor was comforting and diverse. Our server was sweet and extremely helpful. They even told us about the bar on the rooftop that would be a vibe later that night. We tried the celery and sorrel cocktail and I liked it. Kinda like an alcoholic health drink haha. A vegetable centered Asian and Middle Eastern fusion restaurant in the financial district in DTLA. The inside is really well done, dark but in a welcoming way with thick wood tables and plenty of different types of seating, complete with a wood paneled bar. My server was very polite and did a great job as well as the rest of the staff I encountered. When I sat down there were all open tables around me, but within 15 minutes every single table next to me was occupied. I wish they would have spread around the seating a bit more, especially because the table directly next to me consisted of a very loud group. I wanted to order the Stracciatella & Peaches, but sadly they were sold out of it this evening so I went with the Salatim Platter instead. Tonight it consisted of hummus, burnt eggplant, and red cabbage. Overall it was okay, I really enjoyed the hummus but the other sides were pretty bland and weren't as rich with flavor. Next came the Chorizo & Clams and this dish really let me down. The amount of chorizo was very small, it was too chopped up to be able to eat it with the clams, and had absolutely no spice to it. I would suggest using Merguez sausage instead so at least there's some kick to it. They also added way too much kale, it was almost raw, so it was a strange flavor combination with everything else. I felt as if I could make better at home. Based on my first two courses I decided to skip dessert to avoid further disappointment. Overall I feel the food could be way better and considering all the options downtown I felt they fell short. I was not expecting much from this street level restaurant at the bottom of the Freehand hotel. After passing through a lobby of hipsters on laptops, I found my way to the Exchange where I was the only customer. As most Los Angelenos do I'm constantly on the look out for the perfect burger and I have found many. I was not expecting much when I ordered the Exchange Burger and fries especially being the only person eating. What a surprise when their burger turned out to be one of the best burgers I've had in LA. The only burger I've ever had that was so perfectly balanced every bite contained the flavors of every ingredient. It was mind boggling. A perfectedly cooked patty mixed with the butter on the bun to the unique greens, the sharp cheese, pickles and sauce. They are all there every bite. And the fries even though they look like nothing but frozen bag fries were hot and fresh out of the fryer! This burger had a flavor I can only describe as...."pungent". We had high hopes for this place after reading recent Yelp reviews and hearing from coworkers, but we were extremely disappointed with our recent visit. I booked a lunch reservation for 7 for a quick work lunch with my team. When we got there, there was no host to seat us or confirm our reservation. We were just standing around awkwardly waiting for someone to come by. When we were finally seated, it was apparent that the table was not ready for 7 at all (i.e. missing chairs, table settings, etc.) despite having called far in advance to make a reservation. There was only one server who was acting as host, waiter, and busser for the entire place. The service was painfully slow and disorganized. There also appeared to be just one cook in the kitchen as well, which was strange to me. We only had an hour for lunch and everything that could've possibly went wrong happened: our orders took longer than expected, other parties who arrived after us somehow got their food first, our orders were wrong, the server couldn't remember who ordered what, etc. the list goes on. Halfway through the lunch rush they decided to bring out another server who was incredibly rude/condescending and didn't seem to be helping out at all. All would have been fine if the food had been amazing but it was truly lackluster and not worth the wait. I ordered the lamb pita and honestly have had better pita sandwiches at the falafel place down the street. They must have changed their chef because the food that was served was not reflective of the pictures at all. I was really into this restaurant originally because I lived in Miami and had gone to Broken Shaker and the affiliated restaurant (27 Restaurant) a million times. 27 restaurant in Miami is absolutely incredible, but The Exchange was nothing like it and didn't live up to the hype. The interior decor was cute and fun, although dark. The cod fried rice and the cauliflower were inedible salty. I was shocked. I genuinely wanted to love this restaurant but couldn't. The service was atrocious. Our waiter, Rafe, seemed to not care about us because we were young and only ordering a few appetizers. The food had potential, but oversalting is an unacceptable mistake. *** DineLA Experience Review! *** Located in the Freehand Hotel, it was a bit hidden. I visited on a Saturday evening and there is valet service outside. The double doors that lead into venue is the entrance for The Exchange as well as another lounge/restaurant. My friend and I were politely greeted by the hostess who offered us a normal menu as well as the DineLA menu. We were then immediately seated. It was not very busy - there were maybe 4 other parties seated in the restaurant. The DineLA menu consisted of three courses and wine pairings. My friend and I chose different items so we could try more offerings. Starters *Grilled Lamb Ribs: these literally melted in our mouths after they fell off the bone. They were kind of slowly grilled in honey glaze that is not overwhelmingly sweet or super messy. I'm not a huge fan of lamb generally, but the texture of these made me a fan for the night. The paired red wine really brought out the flavor the honey glaze *Pickled Cucumbers: Sliced Persian cucumbers with pine nuts and honey dates mixed in a chili vinaigrette. The dressing is not spicy - it's a bit tangy but it is so refreshing. The honey dates are also crunchy. I do not remember which wine was paired with this starter Main Entree: *Pan Seared Salmon: I had mixed feelings about this dish. The salmon had amazing texture and firmness, but lacked flavor. Some areas tasted simply like salmon. It is seated on a bed of tomato curry and served with broccoli and frisee. I didn't really understand how to eat the frisee. *Hanger Steak: the quality of the steak was better than what we expected. It was cooked medium per our request and very juicy. It was served with brussels sprouts and broccolini. A champagne was paired with the fish, which made an interesting and bubbly experience. Dessert: *Blue Corn Almond Fritters: fresh from the oven!! These were moist and nutty and served with a light whipped cream. Definitely a hit between the two of us. I did not enjoy the wine pair for this one... it was very smokey and heavy. *Ube Cake: A cute slice of ube cake with toasted pistachio! I felt the two flavors don't mesh well, but the cake was moist. Ube flavor was there, but overpowered by the pistachio. A sweet dessert wine was paired with this and it was much more pleasant than the other wine. The restaurant decor and ambiance were intimate. This restaurant has been around for awhile so it's not the "newest kid on the block." While flavors are on point the portions with the proteins are quite dismal. I understand costs have gone up but when you have a chicken banh mi and the sandwich is half the size it should be or when you get a club sandwich you expect a proper sandwich where you need to hold it down to ensure the protein doesn't spill out but you don't get any of that here. Also, there is dust everywhere as if it has been abandoned for years. I'm not understanding how a restaurant serving food has sticky tables and dust on the shelves as you walk in and don't notice these small details. You can definitely tell there is not much love and attention being spent on this joint which is a shame because it has potential. First, we were absolutely blown away by the hospitality shown by our server Raphael, who made fantastic recommendations on apps, drinks, and mains. He saw we were enjoying our meal and promptly asked about our flavor preferences, and if we liked spicy -- "yes"! Thoughtfully gave us a few sauces to try with our mains. We liked the food so much, Raphael passed along our notes to him to head chef Narita. This was not only a delightful memory of a great night with delicious food, but also a warm longtime memory of meeting a talented, intentional chef. Narita's dining experience is such a hidden gem, each dish created gave us flavor profiles of Latin cuisine, Middle East, and Asian. We were not expecting a fusion restaurant, much less such a fantastic blend of global flavors in a highly sophisticated fashion, at a hotel restaurant!! Learning about her culinary experience and intentions with the food made it worthwhile, easily one of our top restaurants to visit time and again. I could tell food was going to be stellar just by looking at all the happy faces in the crowd. My favorite dishes of the night are the hummus, albacore tartare, fried rice and grilled bransino. All excellent. We also ordered a mushroom burrata special that was devoured so quickly I have no picture. Lamb kabob was really good too. I found the steak to be very dry and not a favorite. So many options on the menu I wouldn't order steak again here. Pita bread was also on the meh side... but all the great food makes up for that. The portion of lamb meat was very small and the two eggs that gets served on the side was very underwhelming. Pretty sure the eggs weren't even salted at all. Given that the price of the menu isn't the friendliest to your wallet I was hoping that the portion would be bigger or that the quality of the meal was tastier. It was a platter of Middle Eastern food (labneh, feta, olives, flatbread, hummus, tomato salad) big enough for two famished folks and maybe three peckish folks. But I powered right through that platter and a fruit salad. I guess I was really really hungry! Caleb was our server and there was another guy who kept our water glasses filled. Both were excellent. We made a reservation in advance and had the pick of the restaurant. But if you just show up on a Saturday you may not be so lucky. The Exchange is popular so I recommend a reservation if possible. BEST HUMMUS I've had in Los Angeles. Without question. At least to this date (3/24/19) this place has won my hummus heart. Oh, and the pita! Dear lord. Delicious. That cucumber salad was amazing there wasn't any thing left in bowl when they cleared the plate. The lamb ribs were unique and perfectly cooked. I ordered the salmon which I inhaled.The skin was perfection crisp and seasoned as well and I enjoyed that. Three people ordered the steak and the presentation was great and had perfect red center, while one person ordered it well done he said that was delicious too while being cooked thru without being burnt. I tried the pineapple old fashioned and would order that again too. The ambiance and setting of the restaurant was comfortable and relaxed which was a perfect vibe coming in from the streets of downtown la. I loved the playlist it really set the mood. All 3 of these places . restaurants, the bar, the little coffee shop, and the lounge are all in the same hotel. Which is really nice and convenient. And you go to the lounge. You can sit there and take your time .Play a little bit of music in there,too.But they think it's recorded. Very nice and quiet spot.Just sit there and look at your phone and enjoy yourself. Clothes at about 11 o'clock. It doesn't open to like 5 am. in the morning, and they start serving coffee in breakfast in the restaurant. I think it's a really nice restaurant . But it's really quite very peaceful. I'm definitely going to go back there. If I don't go back then I'll find out the free hand hotel to go to. Someplace else because I plan on going on vacation. one more time, and at this time.I use a free head hotet. It's also very reasonably priced for $40 a nibut you have bump head.You have to get into I recommend That you do reservations for the hotel in advance.Cause it's just get full of faster.Don't use the apps. or go straight to the free hand hotels website instead. The ambiance is warm and inviting and the flavors layered and inventive. We especially liked the two sauces on every table that you could use to adjust the heat level of your dishes. Incredibly high quality food here for a great price right in DTLA. The service is impeccable - highly attentive staff and very friendly. The menu is expansive and suitable for vegetarians with plenty of options. We ordered many appetizers to share amongst 4 people and the portions were great, and the flavors were exceptionally on point. Two of us (non-vegetarians) were looking for a main entree to share that was similar to a poultry dish on the menu, but wanted a fish option. The waitress recommended to us a whole fish dish that was not on the menu, which came with a variety of grilled vegetables and tahini noodles. The dish was enormous and enough to feed 4. It was so delicious that we want to come back and order just that dish for a dinner meal. The restaurant itself was not busy on a Friday night - walk in is totally ok. I actually would recommend coming here in DTLA if you're looking for a casual to high-end spot (with acceptable prices) and you don't have a reservation anywhere else. By far the worst restaurant i have ever been to. I ordered a cheese burger and literally waited 1.5 hours to get my food. There was 2 to 3 tables tops in the restaurant the whole time I was seated. Ordered my burger medium rare with no onions. Waited an hour and a half for an over cooked burger with onions. I don't mind the onions. It's the principle. I don't knownif it's lack of communication between wait staff and the kitchen or what but Inhave never been more disappointed in my life. read more
