Cute cafe downstairs of a corporate building. Natural light through the windows, they don't turn on any lights, so it's a bit on the darker side... Girls were quite busy, I ordered a breakfast sandwich (egg, bacon, apple chutney, aioli, greens) $9, it was served on a thick focaccia loaf, more bread than I liked, but it was good, not worth $9. I ordered a raspberry/rhubarb pie that was overly sweet and a side of fresh fruit. Cute place, felt a bit overpriced. Will try a coffee next time.
I'm just updating my rating to five stars because they give free refills and because I can't think of anything to improve. Perhaps it's a little loud but at 69 decibels it's not bad. I had the breakfast Burrito this time and it was excellent. It looked small at first but it filled me up nicely. You have to pay for parking but at this end of downtown parking is usually easy to find. If you are downtown and looking for place for a well made breakfast, brunch or lunch, you should definitely consider District Café. The coffee is delicious too (did I mention that refills are free?). They have one large table in the back that can be reserved for groups, otherwise it's best for groups of no more than four people.
A really great place for a Saturday or Sunday brunch. They have toned down at their menu now their menu consist of things such as bagels with cream cheese, homemade granola, muffins cookies, breakfast sandwiches etc. So it's definitely a light brunch place. They have an assortment of coffees. They do have milk alternatives such as oat milk They also have a great patio. I recommend the mushroom truffle Breakfast sandwich it was delicious. Unfortunately they don't have very many options for vegans perhaps a homemade granola with oat milk but I'm not sure if they add honey to the granola.
Exceeded expectations. A nice surprise. After returning to Edmonton after living in Europe the past 10 years, I've been on a bit of a quest for a place like this: fresh, modern, with food that tastes better than it looks (and it looks good, too). It has great vegetarian choices which are composed dishes rather than sides without meat. I ordered the Breakfast Bravas and a filter coffee. The coffee, weak when it was a promised dark roast, was probably what I needed as it was my fourth cup of the day. However, all was made up for when my food arrived. In a dish suggesting quality, and cutlery that hasn't been around the block, I was further excited by the spray of alternative greens poking out throughout the dish. Full of flavour: salt, fat, acid, and heat, I felt fully satisfied with my experience. District definitely has the potential to be a pretentious flop in vibe and appearance, but it proudly delivered for my Sunday brunch. Excited to return on another occasion to check what else it has to offer.
Sunday brunch. This is the place. I generally order the breakfast bowl which is $15. It's a hearty mix of potato's, cherry tomatoes and sprouts. A poached egg is included and 3-4 strips of bacon can be added for $3. The meal is filling but District Cafe receives 4 stars because the service and wait time aren't managed well. Wait times and extraordinary long and staff need to smile and be more enthusiastic.
I definitely feel as though you'll get a bang out of your buck at this place. It is on the more expensive side but I find it's worth it! It's again a restaurant/cafe style where you don't just walk up order coffee - they bring you menus and you order at a table. So a little different , but it's pretty well organized so you don't feel awkward ordering off a menu at a cafe. I ordered a chai and their dessert special which was a cherry crumble and wow were they ever good. It was probably the best chai I've had to be honest and the crumble was really nice too - warm and tasty! The waiters are really nice and attentive, they're always smiley and energetic! I went later in the evening and the workers ended up bringing out candles to put on all the tables which I thought was so cute All in all it's a really nice cafe , on the more expensive side but worth it!
I came here for Mother's Day with my husband and toddler. First-off, if you have a stroller you will likely have to place it elsewhere as the space is narrow and there is virtually no room between tables. Luckily we were able to snag a table at the end of the long bench so our stroller sat happily beside us. Having been here several times before, we ordered similar items to ones we've had before and found that the quailty this time round, had deteriorated. My husband ordered the breakfast sandwich - usually his egg is runny yet this time it was soft cooked. I ordered the sausage breakfast sandwich on a biscuit - it was difficult to eat as the biscuit crumbled easily and worst of all - the edge of the egg whites was oddly hard and plasticky - to the point where it was inedible. The fruit salad we ordered was nothing special - the pineapple pieces weren't cut with care so many still had the pokey eyes I had to pick out for my baby and there was no extra touch like mint from what I remember of previous fruit salads. The rice pudding (warm) was also disappointing - usually my husband and I fight over it and this time we found it unremarkable and even ended up leaving some behind. Service was also disappointing - no one was overly friendly. Although our order was taken and dishes removed, there was no acknowledgement of Mother's Day nor even any attempt to get to know their diners. Oh well. We'd be hard pressed to return again - even if it's in our neighborhood. C'est la vie.
It took me forever to figure out a place to go for my birthday dinner but after much hemming and hawing, I settled on District Cafe. They're the newest of Nate Box's empire (Little Brick, Elm Cafe and Burrow are the others). I've never been before although people rave about their brunch and pastries. We came on a Saturday evening and surprisingly, it wasn't very busy. I'm not sure if people know they're open for dinner (my friends that have been had no clue) but it's nice to see they're open late (11:00pm Friday and Saturday!). I made a reservation a few days earlier and they set aside a few tables in the back for our group. The patio area outside looked great with 4-5 umbrella covered tables. The service was friendly but slow. Must be because they're not used to big groups coming in. That being said, the inside is spacious with plenty of seating and decor is what I'm going to call refined hipster. - Blindman kettle sour #8 (summer & centennial) ($8.00) - light, drinkable and a touch of sourness. First time trying their #8 batch. I'm a fan. - Rattlesnake ($12.50) - Cassis bramble ($12.50) - Roast eggplant ($13.00) - ricotta was fresh. An interesting way to introduce eggplant to the masses. - Hand cut pasta ($19.00) - Litaly said this reminded him of kraft dinner but everyone else, including me, thought it was good. Pasta was al dente and sauce wasn't too creamy. - Flat iron steak ($20.00) -guys, guys, guys; they BLOWTORCH the steak! The steak was a perfect medium rare. Everyone loved it. - Sous-vide chicken breast ($19.00) - to quote Litaly: "this $hit's tender". I couldn't say it any better. You'll never want to eat chicken breast any other way. So tender and juicy. Another delightful dish. - Patatas bravas ($12.00) - a few people said this reminded them of poutine but with a tomato sauce. Good but quite rich. - West coast manilla clams ($18.00) - didn't have a taste but it smelled heavenly! - Chocolate chip cookie ($2.50) - good but not what I would get from the pastry options. - Salted caramel chocolate cake ($7.00) - I'm not a huge chocolate cake fan but this portion was massive. I had a bite and it wasn't bad. Didn't taste the salted caramel. More chocolatey. - Coconut cream pie ($10.00) - their pies change daily but damnnnn, this was SO good. Crust? Good. Filling was incredibly light, airy and not too sweet. Bonus, this was huge; you could easily share this between several people. - Mocha ($5.50) - a couple people grabbed coffee drinks at the end of our meal. Mocha for Swanger. - Cappuccino ($4.25) - Cappuccino for Litaly. They both had some neat coffee art. Happy everyone liked the place and I'll be back again to try brunch/lunch.
Items Selected: Cinnamon Roll with a Side of Icing Blueberry Almond Muffin Molasses Cookie Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Pain au Chocolate Warm Rice Pudding with Coconut Milk, Orange Zest, Sauteed Strawberries, Blueberries Located near the Capitol, where trees still-hung with Christmas lights greet early morning commuters to a traffic jam and prohibitive parking rules, District Café & Bakery was an easy choice for breakfast after its sister Little Brick provided some excellent French Toast and Rice Pudding just 21-hours prior, the baking here much improved compared to the Café and General Store concept, though the office building space lacks the charm. Owned by Nate Box, both his cadre of local restaurants and the floorplan of District Café & Bakery recently expanded, it was with several suits enjoying Lattes along with the daily news that I entered the lengthy space with a long counter of Pastries and to-go choices, dine-in orders placed through a hirsuit young man in flannel before taking a seat, the five baked goods quickly placed before me with another comforting bowl of warm Rice Pudding soon to arrive, this time with fresh Berries as opposed to Little Brick's Apples. Seeing cookies fresh from baking sheets being placed on shelves as I'd waited in line, and thus happy to give them a chance even though the Oatmeal-Chocolate Chip failed to wow before, this version was slightly improved by way of more Chips and a softer center, the richly spiced Molasses round far more successful as it offered a whole lot of stretch beneath the exterior lightly dusted in granulated Sugar. Generally pleased by a Pain au Chocolate, the still-warm center gooey while laminated layers packed a lot of butter but not much flaky crunch, District's Blueberry Almond Muffin trumped the Scone from Little Brick in terms of texture expectations, though it was still slight on Fruit, while the Cinnamon Roll served with a sidecar of frosting featured a moist Brioche without a lot of intrinsic sweetness, thus allowing diners to customize it to their liking.
Love this cafe! It was so sunny and had cute decor - good for catching up with a friend over coffee or getting some work done! I had the salumi sandwich with a chai latte and a ginger cookie. The salumi sandwich had cured ham and spicy aioli and jam and walnuts with some green sprouts! The spicy aioli with the jam was a great combination of flavours and the walnuts added some extra crunch. It was really delicious! The chai latte was perfectly spiced and sweetened as well! The ginger cookie was soft and yummy! Loved the atmosphere and food here! Would highly recommend
In a nutshell, District has great lattes and I really enjoyed their chai. The service was pretty decent when I visited. Only minor quibble was we ordered large drinks and were given small. The food was hit or miss. The waffles looked amazing, and my friend confirmed they were. I ordered the fruit bowl ($6) with yogurt for ($2). While I enjoy their house made yogurt, paying $6 for a bowl of fruit that was 90% watermelon was a bit of a let down. I also had a sour cherry almond muffin. It was average. My friend seems to enjoy the scones. The waffle benny on the menu was tempting, but it seemed a bit overpriced as it did not come with any side of significance (ie. protein or fruit). Overall, I don't think I'd come here just for brunch, but I can definitely return for a drink and light snack with a friend. It'd also be great for a late night latte as we have pretty slim pickings for late night coffee shops in Edmonton.
District Coffee Co. opened its doors to downtown's caffeine addicts this week. If you're one of them, you've probably already been. Sharon (Only Here for the Food) detailed their family and friends event last week which got me even more excited to try. I will disclose this first and foremost: I'm no coffee expert. Nowhere near. I like a cup of cream and sugar with a side of coffee, although I was a former coffee addict in my university years. Since then, I have mastered cutting down to a cup of hot chocolate in the winter months. That didn't stop me from waking up early for a coffee date with Joe yesterday though! That is correct, I live in the north side of town, drove in with downtown traffic, grabbed a coffee, and drove back to write this and go to work... in St. Albert. Hashtag, foodieproblems. Located on 109 St and 100 Ave in the Peace Hills Trust Building and neighbor to the Italian restaurant Allegro, the District Coffee Co. storefront is a little shy. I blame the dark, reflective mirrors. It would be nice if they have completely clear mirrors so pedestrians could see the hustle and bustle! Hopefully when the snow melts and it gets warmer it will be a bit clearer and if they place patio tables outside, it will promote traffic. Or word of mouth is fine too. Whatever works. The coffee shop is small, accommodating only two tables and a long bar stool counter top for "to stay-ers". I was hoping for cozy seating, much like the past Mercer Warehouse's ROAST Coffeehouse and downtown's Transcend (may they rest in peace), but it seems like their mainstay will be to get people in and out. Coffee, coffee, coffee. They do offer freshly baked pastries, sandwiches, soups, and pot pies for lunch. I agree with Sharon, loved the fact that they pay attention to little details, from souvenir Alberta plates to wooden trays. They feature Calgary's Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roast, as opposed to their sister business, Elm Cafe's 49th Parallel Coffee from Vancouver. I ordered a latte to go, as did Joe. Great coffee from my perspective; Joe agreed, and I'd like to think he knows more about coffee than I do since he's one of those downtown caffeine addicts. I was interested in trying the baked goodies! So much selection and all looked delicious. We decided on a lemon meringue pie to start, obviously the best way to start breakfast right? Yum! Joe would have preferred a thinner crust but the lemon custard was on the looser side, so I disagree. That would just compromise pie integrity! Joe also took a cinnamon bun to go for work, but I managed to steal a bite. The glaze was hardened and made the exterior into a sticky toffee (wash that down with coffee!), but the bun itself was very well done. I recommended Joe to maybe reheat it in the microwave for a few seconds to see if the glaze would re-melt. I saved the best for last. Brittney was the first to tell me about the toasted marshmallow rice krispie, having tried it earlier in the week. "That toasted marshmallow rice krispie was so good, I sent an inappropriate text to a friend." I second her opinion! The rice krispie itself isn't too sweet, and the marshmallow topping was nice and fluffy. I liked this the best of all three pastries we ordered. Joe even said he would come back to District Coffee Co. just for this. Winner! Thanks for tweeting about it Britt! The back section is dedicated to a long counter for their baking. Whatcha making there... ? A nice concept and a great way to showcase as downtown-ers wait for their coffee. We were there for only 15 minutes as Joe had to head off to work but in that time, I can tell you a steady stream of people were picking up their morning cup of joe. Beautiful cafe and I hope they extend their hours for the weekend as that's the only time I'm in downtown! Next time I want to try their pot pie! Congratulations to District Coffee Co. and welcome. I love this family of restaurants (District, Elm Cafe and Little Brick). We went for brunch and ordered the breakfast sandwich and beef pot pie. The sandwich was delicious with bacon, tomato, argula and a runny fried egg on focacia. The pot pie was good - the pastry was flaky and the filling was nicely flavoured. We also had the fruit salad, which was mostly melon and apple, but still delicious due to the honey sauce on it. I loved the vibe and the service. My only complaint was that as we were walking out, we saw a table eating these delicious desserts I hadn't seen on the menu and wasn't offered by my server. I'll be going back to investigate that!
So I've been here a couple of times and I've also had a try of their baked goods at corporate events a couple of times as well. Location wise, it's pretty good that's it's off Jasper Ave. & close to the legislature grounds. Parking wise, not that great, but most patrons are downtown workers who walk over. I like how there is outdoor seating, inside though, is pretty tight, it barely allows for traffic flow between prep station counter to tables. Seating does fill up rather quickly during the lunch hour too. I did see a washroom in the corner near the side entrance too. They have a chic shelving space with nice items to browse & a lovely display of baked goods while you wait in line, but it doesn't take too long to get your order in. I do wish pricing was listed on the baked goods on display. If you order just a drink, the service is a ton faster than ordering food. Mind you, the food is worth the extra 5-10 minute wait. They even do drink art on your hot drink & there's a drink additions/waiting station with some seating to linger around while waiting for your order. If you order made-to-order food, you get a order number flag. I ordered takeout of a large chai latte & the today's special of mushroom, hollandaise & poached egg tartine. Came to just under $20 including tip...yes it's a pretty hefty price for a deconstructed sandwich & drink, but it was very delicious & not too heavy. Service wasn't too bad, a little bit slower with lunch rush. The server walked my food over to me rather than me having to pick up at counter. The baked goods are always a win here in my books and I'll probably be back here from time to time for a treat & a drink because my co-workers also like this place. read more

A nice and trendy coffee spot off 109 avenue in Edmonton. The shop has plenty of space and lots of seating. The coffee is good and what you would expect from a trendy coffee place. We went for brunch and the food was quite good. The portions aren't that large and so you shouldn't expect the type of brunch you get from the high level or other diners. The biggest issue with this place is parking which is difficult to find. There is street parking in and around but not dedicated parking. Still a nice place to sit and enjoy a coffee and get inspired. read more

My husband and I came here thinking we'd just grab some coffee but the food on the tables around us looked so delicious that we decided to give it a try. The daily special was the toast with ricotta and a pea hummus. It was very, VERY good. Our drinks were top notch as well. I can see why this place gets so busy! Our server Nick was very kind and receptive. Overall I'd definitely recommend this place. It seems like the kind of spot where everything on the menu is on point. read more

I really enjoy the vibe and food here. The coffee, desserts, and meals have all been delicious. I have been a few times for lunch and each time they are out of menu items. Today I was looking forward to the vegetarian sandwich which I've tried to order twice now and they were out. It would be great if the items on the limited lunch menu were available between the hours of 12-1pm. read more
We had chai latte and the quinoa salad here. The service was as cold as the not-anything-special quinoasalad. Did not find anything special about this place. Just another café with men sitting in the window playing with their laptops. read more

Pleasantly surprised by District Cafe & Bakery! I was just expecting coffee and pastries but they have a large, spacious, modern area to sit down and order great quality food. There's some seating outside as well. They serve brunch until 4pm, which is awesome. I had the Waffle Benny (delicious with lemony hollandaise sauce) and my boyfriend had the Breakfast Bowl (he also loved his). I want to go back to try their evening menu! read more

Brunch was done well, a daily scramble or standard selection, also freshly baked pastries, all of it was fantastic. The service was casual and friendly, the coffee was smooth-sweet and beautifully roasted flavours. For a small group or in your own, a place to also enjoy a bright space. read more
