Dishoom Carnaby is a deceptively huge restaurant, much larger inside than it appears from the street. The atmosphere is lively, and the food certainly lives up to its reputation. While the staff was attentive overall, we had to flag down our waiter a few times. One notable feature is the ability to order at the bar and have your purchases added to your table bill--a convenient system I wasn't used to as an American.
Recommendation:
If you visit Dishoom Carnaby, here are my suggestions:
The Black Daal is a must-try, and the Okra Fries are outstanding, especially for anyone with a love of Southern-style cooking.
Save on water by asking for tap water at your table rather than still water, which will be charged.
The Drinks:
My wife had the Bombay Bellini, a mango and guava cocktail that was absolutely delicious and refreshing. I opted for a Road Soda beer, which was recommended when I asked for a local beer that wasn't overly hoppy. It had some hops but was well-balanced and enjoyable. At the bar, we asked for water and were provided it free of charge, which I recommend over paying for bottled still water at the table (£4.50).
The Food:
The waiter suggested ordering 2-3 plates per person, which worked out perfectly as we left completely satisfied but not overly full.
Basmati Rice: Cooked to perfection--not mushy or overdone--a great accompaniment to the meal.
Okra Fries: As someone raised in the Southern USA, these were a standout. Cut lengthwise, the tender insides of the okra were minimal, leaving them perfectly crispy. The spice mix was outstanding, and I couldn't resist finishing every last crumb in the bowl.
Roomali Roti: A soft, house-made bread that was simple yet incredibly flavorful. It paired wonderfully with the other dishes.
Murgh Malai: Juicy, tender chicken with exceptional seasoning. I used the roti to scoop up pieces, and it was a delicious combination.
Grilled Greens: Snap peas and broccoli pan-fried in oil with a touch of salt. The snap peas were perfectly crisp, though the broccoli could have been cooked slightly longer. The oil gave the vegetables a satisfying depth of flavor.
Black Daal: The star of the meal. These slow-cooked lentils, prepared over six hours, were richly spiced yet not overpowering. Creamy and flavorful, the daal had an intriguing flavor profile that reminded me of my own homemade chili. It was simply unforgettable.
The Atmosphere and Cost:
The restaurant was packed, a clear testament to its popularity. Every dish we tried was excellent, and the overall experience was well worth the cost. Our total bill came to £77.40, which included an £8.60 service charge and £11.47 VAT.
Final Thoughts:
Dishoom Carnaby delivers a stellar dining experience with incredible food, vibrant atmosphere, and thoughtful drink options. If you're visiting London, this spot is not to be missed. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and absolutely delicious, making it clear why this restaurant is so popular. read more
