I just bought a $99 Dell refurbished computer. Yes, it is about 7 years old, but it had reasonable speed and operated perfectly. This computer is for an older person who just uses for email, bill pay and an occasional internet search. I wanted to add some memory and a graphicsvideo card from an older unusable computer and Jason at Disoount Electronics said he would put them in for me for free and he did. He then turned it on, demonstrated that it worked and since I had hurt my back he carried the computer out to the car for me. Jason was very professional and is an asset to the store! Have a lot of hard to find computer stuff. Back in December, 13, I bought a 'used' flat screen monitor there, it lasted two days, tried to return it, could not get anyone to come to the service/sales counter to check it it. So, left it there on their counter. Charge is still on my credit card, have not been able to get it removed from my card account. Will try again to get the credit card company to reverse the charge. That guy at the Round Rock store is the best ever! The receipt said his name was Steel, but I can't remember what he introduced himself as. Anyway, he personally looked at my existing computer and had me explain what I use it for and what all my issues were. I was trying to upgrade it with new hardware and operating system, which, as it turns out, would have cost more than a new refurbished laptop, not solved my problems, and caused a lot of frustration learning a new OS when I really didn't have time or need for that. The guys at Discount Electronics save my butt all the time!!! I know software but I don't know when things go wrong on my computer/laptop. I go in the store and they fix it on the spot and a lot of times it's such a small thing I am not charged. I have had experience with about every rep who works there, including the Manager, George. George had a chance to sell me a new laptop, but he was honest and told me the one I have is solid state, and we should just update it and he did. George also added a new keyboard and got me up and running with a docking station and larger monitor when I thought I needed a desk computer. I was referred to this place as the place to go that's fast, experienced, and won't charge you for what you don't need! Well that is exactly what they did for me. I took my computer to be looked at and the guy spent 15 minutes with my computer. He ran a few tests and changed some settings and said I didn't need to replace my hardware. So I went in today after I had bought a used computer off-line without a cord. Even though the cord was $20 on the Walmart site because I didn't want to deal with shipping I spent $27 plus tax on one at this establishment so that I would be able to use the laptop. Well of course the laptop was a scam because once I took the cord that they had sold me at discount electronics home and tried to hook up the laptop it did not work so thinking it had not even been an hour since I had bought this cord at the store and thinking that since I no longer have a computer and it's only been less than an hour if I told them the story and took them the computer and they saw that it didn't work they would at least have mercy on me and at least I wouldn't be out the $30 I spent on the cord since I'm on disability and get a $600 check and have just spent $80 my fault on a computer that didn't work because I was trying to buy it so that I could have communication with my parents in Kentucky who do not have a computer so I was trying to send them a computer for Christmas I would be able to talk to them since I can't afford to move back there and have nowhere to live. I want you to know that after the man figured out that it wasn't the cord in the computer actually didn't work but that would only give me a store discount even though I hadn't even had the cord 45 minutes and then looked at me with the stupid look on their face like they didn't know I was going to be upset and offered me as a store credit what am I gonna do with the store credit when I'm out don't even have a computer. It's Christmas and I'm not a rich person my car is taped together why in the world would you sit there after you knew the experience I've just been in would you act that way. And then of course like everybody does a try and act like it's not their fault and blame it on an owner or the establishment who obviously isn't there for me to talk to. So now I'm out $110 of the $600 check when the only thing I needed for this go to a little bit better because I know the first part of it is my fault would be if they had had some mercy on me in the heart. I only went here because a neighbor of mine had gotten a computer here and have recommended it to me but I've never been there the whole four years I've lived in round rock I guess I now know why.As far as I know it could be that cord that was faulty and they just wanted me to take that and pay for it rather I had a computer to use it with or not. And in case you're wondering I didn't take it I threw the cord back on and told him to sell it to somebody else that I have no need for it. I guess I deserve what I got since I was stupid enough to buy a computer off line in the first place. This is why I hate Christmas. From looking at the rest the reviews it looks like you have to have money for them to treat you right if you don't have money they treat you like crap and steal from you what you do have. Now I have to cancel my debit card because I'm pretty sure in my rage I left it behind and I have no intention of walking back in there and I am not sure that the two people that were in there would be honest enough to give it back anyway. Idly enough before all this happened I had discussed with the kid who waited on me about bringing in my old laptop that no longer powered up to see if he could get the pictures and music off of the hard drive. Seems like it would've been better business to make sure that I came back instead of adding to my pain of the day not getting return business and not getting replaced customer out in the town recommending them to other people. From looking at the reviews here and on Facebook it seems to me that they are very picky about who they actually help and who they screw over. Seems like a pretty big gamble. Clearly I fit into the category of somebody that they thought they could take a vantage of. I would've thought compassion would've been the way to go. $30 would've meant I could've bought at least one more person a Christmas present out of the money I got ripped off of. Would've meant nothing to them. Not the kind of business I want to give my money to. Even if everything had been OK the two boys that were there that waited on me were so snarky and nasty when it comes right down to it I'm wondering if all the locations are like this and if the owners really don't care but this one location is crampping up the reputation. Seems like from the date of some of the reviews I would've attended to it by now if they cared. I really do like to support local businesses but this is one I would rather not even be in my neighborhood. I took my computer in because my children knocked it off the table and it would not turn on. I was told it had a fried motherboard. $550 later, I get my computer back. There is a screw missing the keyboard is not seated and their is a windows activation code error. I took into the store. I was told the screw was missing when I brought it in. That they did not touch the hard drive so they did not cause the error. Oh, and that they fixed the keyboard. Just so you know, no they did not. I will never go in that store again and will advise against my friends going there. However, I did research and the activation code is because the motherboard was replaced and windows needed to know the software was not being installed on a new computer but that there had been a hardware update. Came in today to purchase a refurbished dell desktop package. Not only was the price very reasonable, the representative installed an upgraded video card that I purchased at the store. I purchased a laptop from DE almost a year ago now. I noticed within the first day that it would reboot itself while I was actively using it. I took it in and they didn't have a direct replacement. I had to spend another $100 for an upgrade. That laptop did the same thing. They had swapped out the hard drive from the first to the second so they thought it might be the hard drive. They did upgrade me to a larger HD. Same thing. I took it back and they couldn't find a problem. I only use the laptop for performing, working musician. When it would reboot it would also send a really loud nasty pop through my PA system. It failed again during a show. I basically only used it for 2 songs. I took it back one more time, this time with the power adapter, thinking it might be the problem. They told me it was the wrong power adapter and it took some tense exchange of words to convince them it was the one that came with it. I don't like having to deal with argumentative retail stores. I basically wrote it off as a bad investment. Then Covid comes around, I started using it for remote zoom for our Church services. It was even worse, it would reboot once twice per service. I took it back again. I had downloaded the Dell power management software and it was giving an error to the screen "Can not communicate with the battery". I did a screen shot of the error, saved it to the desktop. I told the person who checked it in that the screen shot was there. Also, when I first bought it, there was a small (less than dime sized) distortion in the lower left side of the display screen. I was told that if it got worse to bring it back. Over all this time it has now covered about a quarter of the screen so I mentioned that as well. So, I get a text that my laptop is ready. I arrive and they couldn't find any problem with it again and that the messed up display was a liquid spill with an estimate of over $400 to fix it. More than I paid for it originally. The tech wasn't there when I dropped it off, he didn't know about the screen capture. I showed it to him. He ran some diagnostics and deemed it as OK. I reiterated the captured error. He conceded that it has a problem and that it might be the power adapter, to which I responded that I've already been through two and one that I use at work, I do work at Dell. He brought the manager over and it again as it had before got tense. He told me that the battery only has a 90 day warranty and that I should have kept bringing it back. I expressed my angst at continuing to subject myself to their condescending attitude and followed up as it got more tense with "Yeah I can't imagine why I didn't want to come back in here and deal with this!" He then agrees that it is probably the battery but he couldn't replace an $80 battery past the 90 days. I asked but aren't you the manager, he informs me that he doesn't have that authority and did not offer to contact someone who does. I told him that I could buy a battery through amazon for $39.99. He told me that is my best bet. I told him that's fine and that would be the end of my doing business with DE and that these types of situations is exactly what Yelp is for. Honestly I wasn't going to yelp all of this, but I did buy the $39.99 battery, I installed it last Sunday and the laptop hasn't spontaneously rebooted since. I have powered it up and left it powered up all day Sun/Mon and it is still up and at the ready. That was when I decided to do the yelp if for no other reason to remind people to get all the facts and that if you do buy a laptop from DE and you can spend another $100ish more and get an acceptable laptop from other retailers, might not be quite as powerful but in many cases, including mine, it would have been serviceable. This has been a year long pain that in reflection I thought should be documented. Bottom line it was the battery all the time and I had documented service trail that they misdiagnosed the issue when I did bring it back in well within the 90 day warranty on the battery. read more

My advise is not to shop at Discount Electronics in Round Rock, Tx. If your looking for a place that cares about it's customers... This is not the place for you!! All you are to them is an opportunity to extract as much money as possible from each of it's customers. I thought Discount Electronics was my go to place... It turns out it's the place to stay away from. I brought them a simple problem, they quickly said all I needed to do was change a single setting in my Bio's. I said great; can you show me how to change it? The assistant manager explained he couldn't because we are here to make as much make money as possible. He looked me in the eye and said "That's what I went to school for" At that moment I knew this wasn't the place for me. They charged me 108.25 to change the setting to solve my problem. By the way; when I drove up their to pick up my computer there was a young man in the parking lot try to sell a store credit for a fraction of it's face value because he said he would never use them again either. They h.ave the stuff, just not the customer in mind. After explaining my situation on the phone and in the store, the store employees, recommended their solution. Two items costing $70 plus. At home the solution didn't work. Sorry. Oh and no refund. But here, you can have store credit, because god knows, EVERYONE needs electronics parts ongoing or life. I do not, and now I have a worthless gift card for a store that basically lied to me, took my money, and when I complained, said, whatever, we get you money in the end anyway. They are not good people. I walked in ten minutes before they opened this morning and said to Rico "Please tell me your going to save my life I know you aren't open yet but please"! The first thing he said was "I am just an employee at a computer store but I will try my best"! Well Rico you are so much more than that! What a helpful gentlemen he was! I had tried everything for the past 4 days that I could to recover my bad hard drive! I am a photographer and model and everything I need to my business was gone! He did everything he could to help me! He first took my hard drive out and put it into an external one which he could've ended there and sent me on my way wishing me luck... but no! He tested the old hard drive and helped me access all my lost files! Then he installed my new hard drive into my computer! He was amazing and so polite! Went in to get Docking station for Dell Notebook, Customer service Guy1 hands me one that will work on my NB, with price tag on docking station. Customer Service Guy 2 helps me verify that it will work on my notebook on their bench, using this new docking station. All is good and 2nd guy says, hey this thing is priced wrong. He shows 1st Customer Sales guy that gave me dock station and he said yes it is priced wrong, takes the sticker off the docking station and says sorry sir that is the wrong price for that one, you have to get this other docking station for that price. I said, well i want this one, that i just verified works, at the price that is on the label you just took off. He said NO I cant do that. I said you will NOT honor that price that you have on this docking station, he said NO, you called and asked about this other docking station and this is not the one. I said I never have called you or talked to you before what are you talking about. He said sorry,we are fixing the pricing issue right now, and that is not the price for that one, have a nice day. Really this is customer service here? Owner needs to get rid of this guy, or have him re-do his customer service training again, he is not representing Discount Electronics at all, this is the 1st time in this location and have never had any issues at any of the other Locations. read more

Run, do not walk, away. Bought a notebook. Would not load Windows updates. Returned same afternoon. They would not replace, I was supposed to leave it for service. The day I purchased, are you kidding. I insisted on a replacement or a refund. I was refused. When I told them that I would dispute the charge to my card, they relented and found a replacement. The replacement would not allow any printer installations. I ended up having to reinstall Windows myself. Worst part is that they acted like I was a problem. If you are going to sell a product, make sure that it works. A lot of folks don't know how to reinstall an operating system. read more

In 2014, bought a used Dell Optiplex from the Discount Electronics on Anderson Lane. So today, a couple years later, I called a closer location (Round Rock) about my issue: The desktop computer was beeping, had the numbers "3,4" displayed as an "error code" and wouldn't turn on. I began Googling what it could be and called this location and they said, just bring it by. When I arrived, I was greeted by Richard. He was so helpful! He opened up the desktop and then took out every memory stick until we found the bad one causing the issue, then guess what? It turned on! My son uses this computer for school and for Minecraft, but most importantly for his homework. I was so thankful for Richard and very pleased. He had it fixed in about 5 minutes or less.
