I would like to highly commend and recommend Discount Electronics for their service and their personnel. Today, I had an issue with my computer not opening up my photos. When I would click on them a weird box would open up and it would not be the picture. As in the past when Ive had a challenge with my laptop I have gone in to Discount Electronics. Matt and Brenden were there. They assisted me in diagnosing the problem, rectified it and showed me how to correct the probelm in the future and optimized the speed of my laptop by making some adjustments. A couple of months ago, Armando came to my rescue. I had purchased two monitors online to attach to my laptop to have a 3 montor set up. I could not get the 3rd monitor to operate. Armando was very patient, kind and work diligently trying different options, cords and peripheral set ups to try to get it operating. He ended up making a determination of the type of docking station with hub i would need to acquire and I was able to purchase the type of connection cord I needed for the third monitor work. I was stressing over a charging issue on my iPad and notebook. AT&T said I was out of warranty. I walked into this store and within 5 minutes of doing some logical testing that they claimed Sri do at AT&T - Steel the man with the plan found the fix. I was told I needed to spend $400 to repair my iPad. Steel charged me $10 for the proper cord replacement. That's just doing honest work. The people here always come through for me. At least 5 times over the past 3 years, I have needed some wacky computer assistance; whether it be a cord I didn't have, an extra monitor or a laptop with some problem I can't solve. My latest issue was trying to change a battery in my convertible laptop. I had already purchased the battery and even looked up steps to change it on YouTube. I live about 40 miles from DE. We bought a small, low end laptop. One day, a Microsoft update refused to complete. The error code indicated a bad file somewhere. I contacted DE customer service. They suggested online resources like google and Microsoft web site. Eventually, through my own efforts, it came to light that DE had put a corrupt file image on the hard drive. Customer Service never suggested that I bring it in to let them put another image on. Admittedly, it would be inconvenient to bring it in, and I figured out, myself, what the problem was, after days of wasted time. No apologies offered, of course. If bringing a laptop back to DE's location will be a problem, or if you don't like not getting assistance that actually helps you resolve the problem, I suggest you avoid DE and find another solution. read more

Well, I'm changing my review from a 1 to a 4, and deleting what I said before. I had ranted about how they did not respond to a service request. However, it turned out that Discount Electronics had responded the day after I sent my service request and I had inadvertently deleted their response email along with a bunch of junk email I had received. I am giving Discount Electronics a 4 instead of a five because they aren't up to speed with current customer tech support services. For example, many tech support services provide the ability to check on the status of a service request online. Many also automatically send a follow up email. If the customer tech support provided by Discount Electronics had included either or both of the things I mentioned then my headaches and rants could have been avoided. I hate to retract all the nice things and 5 stars, but it is merited. This is a bait and switch business. I was told for a x amount of dollars more, they were upgrading the SSD to a larger one. They did not. They substituted a cheaper SATA drive. These guys are supposed to be the experts and can distinguish on sight. I am OK with my laptop, but getting cheated casts a shadow on it. I'm not saying I won't do business with the chain again, but I will make 100% certain to check out everything they tell me. You cannot trust them. This calls into question the Apple we picked up after I got my laptop, but before I realized I was cheated. Who knows what bait and switch stuff they pulled on that one? Since I am not an Apple expert, I have to take them at their word, which is proven unreliable. This is typical of the sort of scams I mention in my online safety and security book. I have invested too much time loading programs and getting the new laptop just right. I am not inclined to have to do the extra work to backup and restore to a different one. Bait & Switch I emailed them with all my desktop requirements. They replied with a URL to a computer. I bought it. It arrived WITHOUT the requirements I needed. Phone calls to them are answered with a recording: "I am busy with customers, leave a message" (IE don't bother me) With no call back, I emailed them, including my original email showing my requirements. They insisted that I didn't "order" any... and refused to accept my return of the useless computer. If you want a bargain, be SURE it is listed with what you need. Plenty of parking, short line, helpful staff, small stock of computers and computer parts. I am rating on their repair services, not on their inventory. My biggest gripe is that it takes them several days, even up to a week, to fix my computer. I have gone to Discount Electronics multiple times. Twice, they fixed what needed to be fixed. Once, I found the computer part I needed and purchased it. This last time, I went to get my computer fixed. They told me the standard cost for diagnostics and asked if I wanted to get it checked in. Then the tech walked in the door, and he offered to do a "quickie" diagnosis for free. He determined that my video card or mother board had gone out. He said he could fix it but with the age of my computer, the fact that it's known to die faster than other laptops, and the cost of repair and parts, I should just buy a new computer. It seemed like a fair analysis, his information matched what another computer repair place had said, and he didn't even charge me for the quick analysis and advice. The only reason this place is not 5 stars is because it sometimes takes a week, give or take) to get my computer back and one of my visits was less stellar than the others (I don't remember the details but I remember the negative feeling I had when I left). Really nice people working here, and I was impressed with their knowledge and helpfulness. Prices were good, can pickup a PC to browse the internet and do email for $200-300. Most of it is older commercial equipment, which is perfectly good stuff and the PC I bought even had a 1 year warranty. So it's pretty clear they're not selling you crap. If it does breakdown, I'll just go in.. they've been around for a while. $200 for a PC is cheap anyways, so if it does on the off chance go out on year 2, I probably got my money out of it anyways. read more

I dropped my iPad, and upon the recommendation of a co-worker I took it to Discount Electronics for a replacement of the digitizer (touch screen). They said there was a $50 deposit, and after the technician checks it out they will contact me with the final price - probably $100. A few days later I was contacted, and the tech confirmed that all I needed was a new screen - would I like him to proceed. Yep - authorized! "It will be ready in about a week." Two weeks later I'm contacted that it is ready. I go in to pick it up, and the edge of the screen is now white - it was black when I took it in. I explain to the guy at the counter that it wasn't correct... I wanted a black screen like it had when I brought it in. He checks the computer repair log. "It doesn't say you wanted it to be black." "Well, it doesn't say I wanted it to be white. I didn't specify color - I didn't think I needed to. I just asked for it to be repaired" I say. "Well, you didn't say you wanted it to stay the same color. Maybe they had trouble getting a black screen" "Yeah, I get that I didn't specify it needed to stay black, but I didn't say I wanted it pink, either. Look, I'm not trying to be a jerk, its just that I wanted the screen replaced with the same thing. If the tech couldn't get a black screen he should have said that he could only get a white one and give me the choice." Guy gets the manager, manager laments that if he replaces the screen then he is "out" the white screen. I let him know I appreciate that, but the tech ordered and installed the wrong screen, and it isn't really my problem that he will be unable to use this screen. He lets me know it will be ready in a week. Two weeks later I'm contacted that it is ready again (sense a theme?). I go in, black screen, I pay, I leave. After I charge it, and I start using it again I find a problem with the screen "clicking" near the home button. I look at it a bit more, and I notice that the screen all along one side isn't fully affixed to the iPad. I gently put my thumbnail under the screen and the whole thing starts lifting out. Back to the store I go. "Hi. It doesn't look like the tape or adhesive that was used to affix the screen is holding. Can you fix that?" "What did you do to it?" That is when I had my WTF IS YOUR PROBLEM moment. The muscles on the back of my neck tensed up, and I wanted to yell, but you don't get help that way... "Nothing - just noticed it was coming up." They take it in the back. When it comes back the screen is better. "Your iPad case is all beat up, and that screen will never fit in it without it coming up. You need to put it in a case." I thank them. I leave. I wait a month to do a Yelp review. Look, guys... the case does have some minor dings. It is 4 years old, but the glass clearly rests inside the aluminum frame. When you screwed up the screen the first time you threw a BS answer that "I didn't specify I wanted it black". That's a garbage response from SED (employee). Manager tried to make it right. I'm good with that. Your repair times took 2x as long as you said they would. You try to blame the customer for a poor repair by asking "what did you do" that caused the screen to lift. Never, ever will my shadow darken their doorway again, and I will relate this story of poor customer service to my friends. read more
