I was in Nags head august 18 2021. Nags Head is really overpriced and underwhelming in general but thats for another review. I got one of the "food guides" magazines that almost all hotels had and went back to the room and studied it. One of the standout ads was from Dirty D's. The ad was pretty obnoxious imo and I of all the places to eat i put DD's as the last place I was going to go. Nags Head is weird. A lot of the restaurants either serve dinner and breakfast or lunch and dinner or any combo but not breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. It was late and I just decided to go to 7-11 and get a hot dog. We got up early next morning and decided not to spend 325.00 for the crummy hotel. We headed south for Buxton, nc. Drove down to the ferry and decided not to use it. Re tracing our path back North we drove slow and looked at the sights and enjoyed the morning. The drive is really nice. We had to have some seafood!!! By the time we got to Nags head it was lunch time. "Owens" was open and we went in and it was one of those places that don't serve lunch. We went to Austin's seafood and was packed. The fryers were down so we left. Deciding that there had to be a place SOMEWHERE THAT HAD seafood we saw a restaurant that had cars in the lot and so stopped. Oh no. It was Dirty Dicks but throwing caution to the wind we went in. There were people in there. Not packed but enough not to scare us off. Told to go to the bar for take out. We looked over the menu. One of the specials was a soft shell crab sandwich with house made "chips". I bit on that and she ordered the Fried platter. Deciding to share both. Reasonable wait and decided to get t shirts to prove we were at Nags head. Food came and paid and off we went home. Forgot to say we also got hush puppies as an appetizer. Opening all the containers so as to keep crispy from being soggy we started with the hush puppies. They came with honey butter in small cups. They were Hot hot hot. Holding mine for a min to cool. She bit into hers and all I heard was "yummmm"... hold a tic i bit mine and the same. Been eating and making Hush puppies my life for 40 years and these might have been the best I have ever had!!!!!. No kidding, crunchy on the outside but perfectly soft and fully cooked in the middle!!!!. Hold in now, we had that honey butter. She dipped hers and went in... another YUMMMM.. HER OTHER HALF went in the butter and into my mouth so I could concentrate on driving and oh yea baby, that hush puppy bite was as good as it get. Real butter, honey not too sweet but just about perfect and that was awesome. We finished though off. She looked at my soft shell crab sandwich and took a bite. She said something about deciding to eat it all up under her breath. She showed me 2 crabs on it and took another bite!... I was like "knock that off and hand it over, please. It had lettuce and tomato on it and I told her to plz take it off and give me the thing without that on it. I bit it and oh yea baby! It was the whole crab all intact with only the crabs face cut out. It was Very good!. Now she already started on the fried platter. Flounder, scallops, oyster, a whole skewered jumbo shrimp with head on and fried shrimp. I Wolfed the rest of mine. She had squeezed the lemon on the still hot flounder ripped of a piece and bite. She didn't say anything and said "try"... shoving a reasonable size piece in my mouth i held it in my teeth for a second and started chomping... it was lifeless. She said something similar. Disappointing at the very least. Next up was a scallop and ka pow! There was that fresh seafood flavor you can't fake!! Omg, the scallops you get frozen are what I call "one note".. you get a mild scallop flavor and thats it. Now these guys were almost 4 notes. The fresh sea smell, soft to the tooth, then that deep deep scallop taste then a sweet after thought. The were amazing!!! 5 star good! They needed nothing added, no lemon, butter tartersauce. If you need that then something terribly wrong. Next a fried shrimp. Same thing, at least 3 notes of distinct flavor. They were excellent!.. knowing she didn't care for oysters I said finish off the shrimp and shove an oyster into my eagerly awaiting face. The oyster had that mildly sweet taste that was excellent. Nothing else needed!. I asked her to try one. She gave me that look and I told her , no, try it im not kidding you. She gingerly took a nibble , looked at it to make sure it was an oyster and finished off the rest. She said that even though she didn't care for oysters she could see herself eating these. Mild oyster flavor, the smell of the sea, soft texture in a flouring not heavy handed. I live inland. We don't get fresh seafood. If you never have had fresh and I mean Fresh seafood you have no basis of comparison and have done yourself the greatest disservice. read more
