I was craving a breakfast burrito this morning so I decided to do a Yelp search on breakfast places in my area and one of the first ones to pop up was Dimond Cafe. I ordered the veggie burrito with avocado. I noticed they were making fries too so I decided to throw in some curly fries too just for the heck of it. I got my order and first of all, the burrito was GINORMOUS! A couple of bites in, it was good but it honestly felt a little over too over the top. I barely finished half before I was full and couldn't eat any more. It was good, it just wasn't great. Nothing about it really stands out to me. The fries were nice and crispy just the way I like them, too. Overall, this place was alright. Kudos for the price but not enough to come back a second time unfortunately. read more

I have to be careful to not rave about this place in such an over the top way you guys think this is a fake review, which is a bummer because this place is really nothing short of fantastic! Definitely a hole in the wall vibe with not the best indoor seating area, but the food and more specifically the breakfast burritos that I've had now on two occasions are without question the best breakfast burritos I've had by far anywhere in California in the last 30 years. I have a pretty deep appreciation for good quality food, not in the high-end foodie sort of way, but I love nuances of flavor and I really appreciate anything, food or otherwise, that's made well. The two breakfast burritos that I've had tasted exceptionally good with a great balance of spices and veggies that were perfectly cooked. Me and my buddy were grabbing breakfast this morning and struggling to find the words about why the burritos are so good when the chef came out from the kitchen to ask if we were enjoying the burritos. He seemed to really care and be open to feedback and it felt really nice to be able to genuinely gush about how great they were and how much we were enjoying them. As an aide the woman at the register at first blush had a tough appearance, but in an instant of approaching the counter her face lit up with a large genuine and very warm smile. As simple as this was it would have made a mediocre dining experience at least one star better, but considering the food was fantastic and her vibe was so warm and welcoming this place without a doubt deserves at least five stars! read more

Must have come on an off day? Ordered a breakfast burrito with Turkey sausage. Over cooked eggs dry sausage and potatoes were still uncooked and under seasoned. Zucchini was raw. I don't find myself in Fruitvale often, but when I think about that area, I come to the conclusion that the neighborhood offers a pretty impressive variety of food. It's not just anywhere that you can find fried chicken and oxtails at one place and just down the street, a bowl of menudo and some mangonada in another. In that spirit, it was my Yelp app that drew me to this compact spot right on Fruitvale Avenue. I was looking for a hearty breakfast after my regular haircut and read the positive reviews about this place. I drove over and parked in the busy Farmer Joe's lot to avoid the constant honking that comes with parallel parking. That worked out just fine since I needed to get some groceries afterward anyway. To be perfectly honest, the Dimond Cafe didn't look like much of a place with the table set-up reminding me more of a donut shop, especially since there wasn't anyone actually dining there (photo: http://bit.ly/1Js9lGB). Paul, the owner, is super and now that they have cooked to order food this place is really solid. I am a huge breakfast fan and had one of the best omelettes I've had in years. My boyfriend and I came here after originally deciding to go to another brunch place that turned out to have a 40 minute wait. Um no thanks. Dimond Cafe was our second choice, but we're SO glad we ended up here. Simple place with no frills. Just good food and outstanding service. When we walked in, there were only two other people there. Plenty of seating. We approached the front of the cafe, where we were enthusiastically greeted by the barista. She made us feel welcome and not rushed. Two menu items caught our eye. The Loaded Potatoes and Healthy Start. Since there were two of us, we ordered both. Something healthy and something... a little less healthy. Both looked incredibly simple but they were delicious. The Loaded Potatoes had two over easy eggs, bacon, cheese, sour cream, and green onions. The Healthy Start contained an egg white scramble with spinach, mushrooms, green onion, avocado, fruit cup, and wheat toast. We were both stuffed at the end. One small detail is that our coffee was put into to-go cups instead of mugs, which was nice because I was able to get up afterwards and go for a walk with my coffee still in hand. If you're looking for a breakfast or brunch place in Oakland, no need to visit an overpriced and super crowded restaurant. I was here visiting from Southern California with my wife and family, and was amazed by this place. Their Breakfast Croissant was absolutely AMAZING! The Dimond Café is definitely my new go-to spot in Oakland for fresh locally sourced amazing food! Their turkey sausage was cooked to A charbroiled brown perfection while managing to be perfectly juicy and non-greasy!! They served me two patties on top of fresh spinach leaves which probably was just garnish but it tasted even better on top of the patties. You should try it! The French toast was unbelievably fluffy, and the bread was buttery as well. I can hands down say this had the BEST breakfast burrito that I've had in my life-- flour tortillas stuffed with bacon,scrambled egg, green onion, zucchini, bell peppers and potatoes! It was a little pricey for a breakfast burrito, but still the best $7.95 I've spent. The perfect thing about the burrito was the bacon. Oh Dimond Cafe! Where do I begin?! I love the food and the everyone that works here! This is another neighborhood favorite of mines. All the employees are friendly and will remember you and your order if you frequent the cafe. I'm always greeted with a smile and the woman working the register always asks me how I'm doing. This place is great for on the go, or dine-in. I can walk here from home so I tend to come with family on the weekend. I eat here at least once a week and the omelettes are my go to! However the French toast is perfection when I feel like having a cheat day! Lol They also make certain accommodations for me. I am on a Keto diet which is low-carb, no sugar. So I'll ask them to make me a burger with no bun. The guys in the kitchen always know it's me when I order it (I think I'm the only one that come in for a bunless burger lol) and he will wrap it in lettuce for me! The cafe is located right off busy Fruitvale, and right in front of a bus stop, so you either have to park in the nearby Farmer Joe's parking lot, or behind Peet's right across the street. It pains me so much to write this review. I have been going to Dimond Cafe for over 4 years. I lived in the Fruitvale area but when I moved I still drove out of my way to get breakfast here. It was always good and the service always perfect. Yesterday it was horrible. I should have complained a when I had first had issues the some time ago. The first instance happened some time ago when I ordered a Caesar salad to be delivered to my home. I wasn't expecting to a million dollar salad, I knew what I was paying for, but what I didn't expect was dirt to remain on the romaine lettuce. Yes, i said dirt. They didn't even bother to wash off the lettuce before chopping it and serving it. I should have complained then but I thought it was a fluke again because I go out of my way for this place regularly. I took pics, and they are attached also here. Yesterday was the final straw though. I walked in to place my order. I was told it would be ready in 20 mins. That was fine I had other errands to run in the area. I came back and I was told it was going to be just a few more minutes. Not a big deal, maybe I came back early. All of the DoorDash, GrubHub and other walk in orders are leaving before mine. But Where is my order? After letting us know that our ticket never actually printed out, we ended up waiting an additional 40+ minutes (totaling an almost 1 hour and 5 minutes later since I first placed the order mind you) my food was finally given to me. Again we saw numerous other orders go out even though we had been waiting the longest. Both of our hot chocolates tasted like brown water. After dumping them out, we realized that there was 1/4 cup of just chocolate powder. Neither weren't even stirred. As part of their apology for the delay in our order, they gave us a fruit cup, right out of the cooler.... But alas the fruit was covered with spots of mold. I can't believe it has taken so long for me to locate this gem in my neighborhood! Walking in, you would not expect much. Just looks like a little local coffeeshop. The staff and ownership are super friendly and the short order cook should be called CHEF! My friend and I have now ordered breakfast 5 times in the last two weeks and every time it has been exceptional! Do yourself a favor and try the French toast special. French toast, choice of meat, two eggs any style, and the most delicious, simply prepared diner style potatoes you will ever have. The French toast is far from your usual "bread soaked in egg" affair. Perfectly browned, custardy and soft inside. Eggs are always perfectly prepared.
