This is a fun place, no doubt. The day I was there it was lively and crowded. Lots of drinking going on, even a bartender was partaking! It was amusing to watch and I had a good time. I came here in order to watch the jet game with my fiancee. In order to see the T.V. we had to sit at the bar which we didn't mind at all. The bartender was super nice and friendly and very helpful. For food we decided to split some wings and nachos. The nachos were huge deff enough to split with two people probably even more. Also the wings were good as well! As for a drink I saw they had Truly on tap and the bartender offered to make me a mixed drink with it and it came out amazing. This place is a great place to come and grab some food and a few drinks! I used to go here a lot when I worked in Riverhead. I'm glad to see it is mostly unchanged. An old-style pub atmosphere with an assortment of domestic and imported beers. My personal favorite is the pulled pork sandwich. I usually get it with sweet potato fries, the sauce that comes with it is not to be missed. I was disappointed with the fish and chips. The last time we had it, they gave us a healthy portion of the Irish soda bread, and an adequate portion of fries and fish. This place isn't much to look at from the outside and the inside could use a bit of updating but don't let that deter you from sitting down and ordering some food and a pint. Family & I visited this place after hitting a few breweries around the area, so naturally pub food was the next stop before we headed back home. I had never been here before but it came highly recommended from the family visiting. Most people were seated at the bar and there was no one else in the dining area. At that moment, I did have doubts. The server was super nice and grabbed us a few pints to start while we looked over the menu. They've got a decent selection of craft beer on tap so it wasn't hard to find something we liked. I ended up going with the steak sandwich which I ultimately split with my boyfriend being that it was so big. They kindly brought out the sandwich split onto two plates with their own side of waffle fries. MY GOD, these fries...ugh...yum... Absolutely horrible service. Stopped in on a Sunday with a small group to have a quick lunch. We waited behind a group of 2 to get seated, and after about 5 minutes, the group of 2 got seated. (The restaurant was nearly empty at the time). About 10 minutes after the group of 2 got seated, we were still waiting to be seated, completely ignored by staff. This is one of my two favorite places in Riverhead, on the east end right between the North & South Forks. Slip into this place for a warm cup of their famous cabbage & sausage soup. The surf and turf is delicious. It is a perfectly cooked thick flat iron steak with real lumb meat crab cakes. The captains platter was just ok... fresh, tasty but not conquering of the taste senses.. notable average.. a mix of a small piece of fish, a few small scallops, & shrimp.. Go with the main items....steaks, the nachos looked great at the next table... the salad was fresh with nice house dressing.. After our day out at Harbes farm we left there hungry (the lines were so long at Harbes that we had to find somewhere else to eat) and wanted to grab some food on the way home. Went to Digger's on the recommendation of Yelp and because it was on the way home. Went with my wife and my 2 kids (5 & 8). The service and atmosphere was fine, no complaints with either. My kids ordered off the kids menu, hot dog with fries and a grilled cheese with fries. The fries were excellent on both dishes, the grilled cheese was cooked to perfection (hot, melted cheese, REALLY good) and the hot dog was ok, a little burned on one side but its hard to mess up a hot dog. My wife had the marinated steak sandwich with sweet potato fries. Wow, did I regret my sandwich after I tasted this! Excellently cooked, great flavor and a very nice sized portion. I ordered off the special football Sunday menu (see picture). I ordered the Big Blue and was highly disappointed. The chicken was overcooked and gross, I couldn't even take a bit of it with out it feeling like I was chewing through cardboard. I ended up not eating the meal at all. When the waiter came by to ask how everything was, it was already too late to send it back (wife/kids were all done eating) so I just told him what was wrong with it and that I didn't want a new one. When we received the bill, the waiter took 10% off the total bill for the sandwich, which was nice, don't get me wrong but I expected them to take the whole meal off the bill since I didn't eat any of it. I'm torn on a recommendation, 2 out of 4 meals were excellent but there is no excuse for overcooking a hot dog and a breaded chicken cutlet! read more

About a half mile walk from the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, it's well worth the walk. Nicely accentuated restaurant and bar, service with a smile, and great quality food. For those in search of a place to grab some local brews, this place also serves up a modest selection of local and non-local suds. Prices are average, portion size great. I ordered the pastrami Ruben, my wife the French Onion burger, and my kid the hot dog. All of them were fantastic, by each's account! Swing in and grab a seat. Cute, Irish bar and restaurant. Restrooms were clean. Great service. Ordered the Bavarian hot pretzel as an appetizer. It was hot, soft and delicious! We ordered a Reuben, a chicken O'Brien sandwich, burgers and kids meals. The Reuben and chicken were really good but the burgers were over cooked (asked for it medium and it came out well done) and the bacon was actually burned. Kids Mac n cheese and chicken fingers were good. We ordered cheesecake and the molten lava cake for dessert. The lava cake had a weird taste. Cheesecake was small but good. Overall good experience with atmosphere and service but will stay away from the burgers and lava cake if we return. read more

My family and I have been going to this restaurant for many many years. We decided to go after a year of covid lock down the other day. The menu has changed and the food is absolutely inedible. I had a marinaded turkey burger that tasted like it had the bottom of a dirty mop water bucket poured onto it, my mother had a chicken special that was under cooked and bland, my boyfriend had the Mahi Mahi that was no bigger than and inch on top of a plate full of rice and my son had the chicken fingers and fries that were very small and about 5 fries on the plate altogether. The chicken fingers taste fake and plasticy. It is a shame we used to love the food here but now I am saddened to say we will most likely never be coming back. Stopped here on Monday, March 6th for a late anniversary dinner. Our server, I believe was AR, was fantastic! He was very attentive. Tried this restaurant at a whim when our first choice had us wait an hour to be seated while watching new comers be seated first. My party of 3 were very hungry and weary after our disappointment but this pub/restaurant quickly made up for that. Excellent customer service, we were seated immediately by Ariel who was waitressing that night. I couldn't have asked for a better server. My only regret was not giving her more cash tip (although it was right on) we were just so elated by her patience and personality. Even Josh and another adorable young man were helpful in making what was near a disastrous evening... pleasantly enjoyable. We began our gluttony on basic rolls with butter, followed by buffalo wings which came straight away along with mozzarella sticks. We were so hungry, it was as if the divined powers had intervened and knew how ravenous we were. We even ordered our entrees along with the appetizers - a very heavy table. My aunt had their babyback rack of ribs with rice and steamed broccoli. Ribs were practically falling off the bone and stacked high, already separated, making it more convenient to dig in. The rice however was a different story (not good, but it's a tall order to make when you're going against 2 Haitian women) :D My aunt requested a different side (fries) which Ariel quickly produced without a hint of attitude. My friend and I ordered their fried chicken with garlic gravy and mashpotatoes. Absolutely delicious, though my chicken cutlets were over fried underneath and the cook served it on the golden side to mask his mistake. I'd asked for the creamy garlic gravy on the side and my cutlets were smothered with it an addition to having the sauce on the side lol. Two blue moons and a mudslide (just the perfect amount of alcohol) later, stuffed and pleased, we paid our tab and left with our doggie bags happy. Took my daughter and her friends there last night for her 19th birthday celebration. The food was awful. I took 3 bites of my Shepards Pie and it was terrible. When the waitress finally came over to ask if we wanted to take the leftovers and we said no, she didn't even ask why entire uneaten plates of food were being left. 7 people ordered 7 different meals and not one was edible. They should be ashamed letting food like that leave their kitchen. If u could give it less then 1 star I would read more

There's a new Chef(sheriff) in town, and this chef isn't happy. For fourteen years I come into the North Fork to visit my husband's mom and step mother. She picks us up Diggers award winning cabbage soup, and I always take at least two extra quarts home in a cooler. Well...step mother calls it in. She goes to pick it up and finds A small paper carton. The person says the chef won't do a quart, only bowls. What??? I call and I'll pay extra. Nope chef won't do it. Do they want our business? I get home to find quarts half full, they did bowls again. Closely noticing the soup is not the same. The former years it was rustic- chunks of sausage and cabbage. This batch has round sausage and quartered pieces. The taste and consistency is not the former 'award winning' soup we remember. I suspect a new chef is on board and cutting corners. I have been eating here for years, take out and dine in. Pretty good food here. I had a great prime rib a few weeks back during Covid. I do have a few complaints. We have gotten take out and had food missing or went there to pick up food after it was supposed to be ready and had to wait another 15 minutes for the food. (This is an issue for me because I work nights and will run to get food and waiting there decreases the time I have to eat on my break.) Also we did eat there in the late fall time, there was no mention on the menu of the 4% charge for using a credit or debit card, and found out on our bill. Also the same night it was very slow, I think we were the only table, and the service was very slow and inattentive. We had no soda until we were sitting for 15 minutes and froze because they had the door open and fans on. read more

This has been my family's go to place for going on 25 years. A nice neighborhood bar where you can get a good meal at a great price. But since COVID all aspects of this operation have been terrible. Prices have increased about 20% the servings are smaller and practically every order we have placed there's a mistake or the quality is poor. I hate to say we will never go back! read more

Nice place. Spacey bar, plenty of flat screen tv's. Great selection of beers on tap! Oatmeal stout is very good! Chili was enjoyable, ranch salad was good too, and the sirloin steak with whole peppercorns and gravy is alright. Personally I don't like peppercorn THAT much.... Another random chosen food spot while on vacation and overall not a bad choice. We got the combo app and the potato skins were huge compared to normal, and were loaded with cheese. All other items tasted good in the combo as well. I had gotten the pulled pork sandwich, it was way to messy and overloaded to eat as a sandwich, but the flavor was pretty good. We stopped in for a bit.. parking conveniently located in the back.. Ample size bar..wines, a big variety of beers, mixed drinks.. "Peter " bartender on this particular day.. very personable, accommodating.. There are Flat screens everywhere( so you won't miss a beat).. seating areas as well.. bathrooms clean( well maintained).. We had some drinks and appetizers by the bar.. the pulled pork with nachos was HUGE and quite flavorful.. chicken wings come in a variety of flavors( from super spicey ..to mild) delicious ribs( tender, fall right off the bone)they had to be good... gone before I could get a taste.. Sooo good. I've driven past here so many times yet never stopped. I finally did and I'm so glad I finally did. The order taking process was good and simple plus the price point was amazing. Alot of food for not alot of money. Waffle fries really good, alot for the price. Chicken fingers were awesome. I personally didn't like the mozzarella sticks or marina but the husband did. All personal taste. They definitely taste homemade, really nice. Husband got a shepherds pie and he was in love. Didn't even put it down for a second, he actually said it was better than his!!! will definitely be adding this place to our list of must haves. read more

Digger's is a standard Irish Pub in downtown Riverhead, and it seems to be the gathering place for locals. It was lively on a Friday evening even though there were no Happy Hour specials? There's a good variety of beer on tap-- everything from Guinness and Blue Moon, to more local options like Greenport Harbor, Blue Point, and Brooklyn. The menu also has something for everyone, and portions are generous. I recommend getting the "Irish Chips" with your meal. These are waffle fries covered in cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon and gravy, and they are the perfect food after a few pints. Overall, not a bad place to stop by for a beer & a burger. read more

I was in Riverhead for work and needed to eat, I was starving. So like many of you I turned to Yelp and Digger's Ales N' Eats came up. After scrolling through the pictures I decided to stop in. They have parking in the back and that's where I parked. When I came in I couldn't believe how big this place was! I mean you can bring 10 people and still not be next to other people. They have rooms in rooms there. They have a very clean single bathroom to add to the allure. I was greeted by my waitress Alyssa, she was a great waitress by the way, and she took me to my table. This place has a very homey feeling. Low lights and great music, but not loud enough to overpowering your conversation. I got a pink lemonade and ordered the famous "Triple Decker" (only 2 patties, name fools you) and I prepared for war! When my meal came I didn't know how to take this double 12 oz. monster down. I took my time before I started, if anyone needs help with taking one down I'm the guy for the job. I managed to destroy it! I must say it was worth the fight. The meat was juicy, the tomatoes were fresh, and they put plenty of cheese on it, did I mention I love CHEESE? It was a great quality burger. They are a bit price, just a quick note, but eating you will know why. I also got waffle fries. They seasoned them perfectly! Not to salty, I hate salt, just the right amount. Riverhead has too many chain restaurants with chain bars, and enough fine dining restaurants with fine dining bars. But it lacks a location where people can pop in after work, or head to on the weekend, for a beer (or more). Digger's tries to provide such a location. And does so rather admirably. The bar appears to be the focal point . It's centrally located and is easily accessible from all corners of the dining room. The selection on tap is solid. Several local craft breweries, and several of the big, domestic names. Something for everyone. There is also a bottle list just in case. If you go after work you can expect it to be crowded and filled with all different types of people. Just like a normal bar after work should be. It works. The food is good. Some of it real good. There are plenty of appetizers that pair perfectly with a pint. All the barfood staples, many with an Irish twist. You can go there for dinner and enjoy traditional Irish entrees (Shepard's Pie, Corned Beef and Cabbage etc..) at a price point that may deter some, but encourage others to try being Irish for the night. But while you're enjoying your Fish and Chips, there's a possibility your conversation could be interupted by bar area spillover, perhaps by the Rivehead Class of '66 alum whose reunion is going on that night. The owner recently purchased the adjoining building (a run-down, old bar no less) and plans are in the works to establish a micro/nano brewery in house. In house brewery operations should increase the brewpub feel and charm that Digger's has already worked hard to, and has successfully, established. read more

Digger's is everything that I look for in an Irish pub plus more. They take it to the next level here. Not only do they serve typical Irish fare, they also have menu items that are really outside-the-box in terms of taste and creativity. Oh, and they have a killer selection of beers on tap. That's a huge plus too. Inside is casual and comforting. There's ample seating in both the dining area as well as at the bar. And during the weekend they have a live band which is great. I love that their beers are always rotating and since the Riverhead area has a ton of breweries, you're getting what's local. Now let's talk food. Having tried an assortment of items from the menu I can't decide what's my favorite, but I'll try to break it down for you: -Coconut Shrimp: Ridiculously good. They coat the shrimp in a special breading that's JUST sweet enough and they pair it with a honey dijon sauce to off-set the sweetness so it's perfectly balanced. One of my favorites of the night. It had the definite crunch factor. -Pull Pork Tacos: I mean, how can you go wrong? Really. Is it healthy? Nope. Is it delicious? YES. -Spinach Artichoke Dip: The ultimate app. It's super creamy and addictive. -Kobe Beef Burger: This was a special of the night. Saw the words Kobe Beef... say no more. The burger first of all was massive. It was sandwiched between two hearty buns and topped with cheese, smoked pickles and can't remember what else, but it was so so good. And it came with steak fries. I had to split it with someone since I couldn't eat the whole thing. Props to the chef on that one. At Digger's you feel right at home.
